I've been working in the area for about 5-6 weeks and have been here several times. Most of the time the sandwiches have been good, although light on the meat, but with the chips, drink and excellent ice cream, so be it. The last two times were less than satisfactory, having to wait 25 minutes ON TOP of the 20 minutes they told me it would take on a called in order for 1 order. Strike One. Then the last time I was there, again, I called in an order for five people in the office and when I went to pick it up, I was informed that they had no ice for the ICED tea. I made do by stopping by a little country store and buying a bag of ice. OK. I got back to the office to deliver our lunch when a coworker informed me she did not get what she ordered. So, I get back in my car, drive 5 miles back to the place and tell them that an item was omitted from the order. Hey, I figured, things happen. Nobody's perfect. I used to work in the bar/ restaurant biz, I understand. But if I or anybody else in our place of business made a error, we would APOLOGIZE! An apology goes a long way in my book and that is the one thing I didn't get for my time and mileage and inconvenience to correct this mistake! Strike two and three!You guys got a good thing going here, but you need to work on the service! I would have never discovered this place if it were not for my friend taking me here. At first I was like, "Where are we going?" In the middle of an orange grove sits a place well worth the trip. From homemade ice cream to sandwiches, this place offers a variety of fantastic menu items. But, I have to say it is the ice-cream that stood out. Their orange flavored ice-cream was amazing. Coming to Porterville for work, I never thought I'd find a hidden gem like this one. Thanks to a few friends' recommendations, I stopped by last Friday afternoon to order at least the renowned orange ice cream. I saw the lunch special menu and ordered the veggie lettuce wrap along with orange and almond ice cream. The lettuce wrap was great, though a little messy to eat. The grilled eggplant was so flavorful and the spicy mayo was a great topping. Good thing I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to dine in instead of eating on the road. I sat down and the very friendly lady who took my order brought a plate and utensils so I could eat my wrap like a civilized human being--she saved me from savagery! After inhaling the wrap, I finally started working on the ice cream. The orange sherbetlike ice cream was so delicious--not too sweet and tasted fresh and perfect for an abnormally warm day in January. It was an unlikely combination, but the almond ice cream complemented the orange ice cream so well! I tried so hard to savor it because it was so yummy but I inevitably ate it all to the very last drop. For about 9 bucks, this lunch special (plus chips and a drink) is a steal! They are very generous with the ice cream, too. Orange works will definitely be my go-to place every time I'm in town :) read more

Don't waste your time and money. Called an hour and a half in advance for a tri tip lunch special and they still messed up the order. When I cam by for pick up they told me they didn't have any tri tip meat and didn't make it. So I had to order another sandwich on the spot and had to wait twenty minutes for it. I ordered it toasted and they forgot and gave it to me cold. I asked for garlic spread and they put two sold garlic cloves in there. read more

so yummy!!! wish it was closer to Fresno or at least closer to the 99 fwy. vegetarian sandwich with eggplant is really tasty as is the tri tip with garlic. this is just a small place with 6 sandwich choices or you can get a salad but it is all homemade. the ice cream is unlike anything you've had. it is soft serve and they always have orange and a flavor of the day. im not sure if it's sherbet or ice cream of a mixture but it great!!! read more

On our way home from camping in Sequoia national park we stopped here for lunch. This establishment is so cute, original with the quickest service you can ask for. Their menu is short but delicious and VERY reasonable priced. We loved the food and the iced tea and the fast service and we will definitely be back next time we go to Sequoia. I only recently started going to The Orange Works. I've always heard about how good the ice cream is, or how good the sandwiches are. The fact is the sandwiches are decent. They are fresh, but nothing you can't make at home. I've only tried the tri-tip and the pastrami. Prefer the pastrami. What I do like is the ice cream. The orange ice cream, which is made daily, is very different from what you would find in a grocery store. It tastes like a fresh off the tree orange, kind of a combination of a sorbet and soft serve. Very good. They also do a different flavor daily which they announce on their Facebook every day so you can always know what to expect. If they have a flavor that sounds good, I'll drive over and grab a quart. And if you're buying ice cream, buy the quart. Its $5.50 where a jr cup is $2.50. Do the math. If you go for lunch, make sure you get the lunch special. Sandwich, chips (lays-plain), a can of soda or iced tea which they also make (unsweetened. Grab some packs of sugar) and a cup of ice cream after your meal which is pretty generous as far as the ammount you get. 4 stars because of the ice cream. Worth a visit, but trust me if you go around lunch time it gets PACKED. read more

First time going to this place and it was amazing. The turkey sandwich and the tri tip sandwich was delicious. Me and my husband really enjoyed it. The staff was very friend and the customers as well. My hands were full with the food I ordered to go, and this nice older lady got up and opened the door for me. After having their orange ice cream about a year ago, I "liked" Orange Works on Facebook but hadn't been back until yesterday. And it was worth the wait! I met up with a friend for lunch, but only have an hour lunch break for work. After seeing the line and the crowd I thought there was no way I would make it in under the hour. But, after ordering the turkey sandwich they brought it out to our table pretty quickly. It was freshly made and delicious! Then the icing on the cake, or the ice cream, the flavor of the day was pomegranate. I got the half and half and it was dreamy and creamy. A local gem! After hearing my friends raving about Orange Works for months, I finally got to try it myself today. Each day they offer two homemade ice cream flavors, one is always orange, being that they are in the middle of miles of orange groves (LOVE that they are celebrating the local flavor) and the other is another seasonal treat. I was out on business trip in Strathmore, CA, a small farm town way in the middle of somewhere between Bakersfield and Fresno. This review may be read but this cafe/sandwich shop will rarely be visited by readers because Strathmore is tiny, spreadout, and not a tourist stop. The locals me told this was the place to go for good sandwiches. Well, given the choice of this place, mom & pop convenient stores, or chain eateries some tens of miles away, I really had no choice. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich. Oh man, I never had a tri-tip this fresh! I have gone on fishing trips where the catch was deliciously eaten the same evening as sushi. There is no comparison to that freshness. I guess this is the closes I will or I would want to get for beef. There are cattle ranches nearby. It's places like these where you can appreciate farm fresh quality. This store also sells jams, jellies they make on their own. I bought a jar of cherry butter. It was okay, but novel. It's like the locals say, their sandwiches are good! I still got the fresh taste of their tri-tip sandwich in my mind and will stop by the next time in town, if ever. 4.5 stars. read more
