Honestly a stunning restaurant, very open yet cozy at the same time. It was quite loud but you could also have a conversation without yelling. I personally dressed up a little bit I think jeans and a nice top would be okay as well. The peel and eat shrimp was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The steak tartare was okay, I wasn't a huge fan. The Burrata salad was delicious, highly recommend. A beautiful medley of taste and texture. The Wagyu sirloin was also a tasty treat but I am not a huge fan of peppers so did not eat them. My companion had the Tile Fish which he enjoyed. Lastly the Buttermilk Panna Cotta was divine, I'd rather have that than the Chicolate/Hazelnut Budino, again personal taste preference. My wife and I enjoyed dinner at The Ordinary our first evening in Charleston. Truth be told, we were heading to Chubby Fish but they were hosting a private event so we went to the Ordinary on their recommendation. The Ordinary is house in a former bank building and the high ceiling help with the sound. We sat at the bar and marveled at the bartenders scaling the huge wall of wine. The bartenders were incredibly helpful recommending different wines (we had a dry reisling, Alsace wine blend, and chenin blanc). They were equally helpful navigating the short but varied menu. We ended up plate sharing the Triggerfish tartar, crispy oyster slider, snowy grouper, and wreck fish skewers. All were amazing but the wreck fish skewers were the highlight! So 5 stars on this hip, wine bar, tapas restaurant - and I didn't even mention the awesome desert or that the raw bar is housed in the former vault! read more

I had been wanting to try the Ordinary for awhile and snagged a reservation through a Resy notification for a Thursday night around 8:30 PM. We were seated right away. We ordered a crudo appetizer and the blistered shishito peppers to start. I wish the cocktail menu was a little more expansive, I didn't find anything I loved, so I tried the cocktail with bitters and pineapple juice. It was refreshing but a little pricey for what it was. It probably could have been made better with at least a garnish. The crudo was fresh and delicious. For my dinner I got fish (I now forget exactly which type) with summer tomatoes and a potato purée. It was absolutely delicious! We did have to wait awhile though for our food. The place itself has a lot of atmosphere, I believe it is located in an old bank. For a highly hyped spot, this didn't disappoint! There's an easy parking garage right behind it. The staff were super friendly and helpful. This is a small plate, family style approach so we ordered several dishes for the 4 of us. They do change the menu daily and had a ton of seasonal veggies. The table favorite was the oyster slider. Other dishes we loved were burrata and tomatoes, gumbo and black bass. Great spot overall for a celebration meal! read more

[Insert obligatory "Ordinary" pun here] I am experiencing a conundrum. Charleston as a city did not blow me away. But The Ordinary as a restaurant did. Should I return just to eat here? How long can one spend at a restaurant before being politely asked to leave? Anywho, our best meal was here. The Snapper app was fantastic to start with, as were the juicy raw oysters. The Crispy Oyster Slider, Shrimp and Tete de Poisson were both very good, but the undisputed, magnificent, Harry Potter-defeats-Voldemort beast of the night was undoubtedly the Triggerfish. Holy hell. What is this magic? Perfectly tender fish roasted to perfection with microgreens, citrus, carrots, and so much more. Each accompaniment a different texture requiring different cooking times, yet all coming together to create the perfect texture symphony. I would love to visit this restaurant for dinner next time. The seafood tower looked amazing at another table. The single fat juicy fried oyster on a sweet roll with a vinegary slaw was the perfect solution. Thank you chef!! Now can I have another?? I was also tempted by the swordfish schnitzel. Yep, you read that correctly. A swordfish steak pounded thin, breaded and pan fried topped with a beautiful salad of blood red radish (or were they beets) slivers and herbs. So good. The asparagus were crisp but tender, served on ice with some sugar snap peas and a dipping aioli. My husband had the wreckfish and said the preparation was fresh and springy. I've been to The Ordinary before, and I was determined to visit the place at least once during my stay here at Charleston; unfotunately the only time I could secure a reservation for during my stay was tonight late at 9:30, and I already had a big seafood meal in another place. So I came here just to have some drinks and snack. Service: very attentive. Got my drink wrong once: I ordered a mocktail of Ginger Beard and was given a Ginger Beer, but the waiter delivered the correct drink later and I got to have the ginger beer on the house. Drink: Ginger Beard mocktail with ginger ale, honey, orange, and lemon. A very balanced drink, not too citrusy, had the nice honey aftertone. Food: jumbo lump crab fried rice. Fried rice is important for me as an Asian, but it was frequently demoted to a cheap American-Chinese take-out dish in this country. I am glad that the kitchen did justice to this dish. The rice was fried perfectly, still maintaining the dry and slightly powdery taste, but could also absorb the spicy flavor of the ginger sofrito. The addition of pumpkin added interesting texture to the rice. The dish was seasoned carefully so as not to overwhelm the savory bites of crab meat. A very delicate dish. The only complaint might be the price tag of $29. Dessert: Chocolate-hazelnut Budino. Very flurry and light chocolate and heart-warming caramel. Wish it could have a lot more hazelnut. Overall: I used to rate this place highly, having not tried many other places in Charleston. This time I will have to settle on four stars. The food and service was still solid, but for the same or similar price, you could enjoy many other interesting options in this city. read more

There is nothing quite ordinary about The Ordinary, and that's ok with me! Located on the busy King Street, it is a repurposed old bank. It has a laid back modern vibe that is easy to dress up or down depending in your mood. I have been a few times and it has become a staple stop anytime I am visiting Charleston. I will say I have only been for apps and drinks, but they are just that great it always keeps me coming back for more! The seafood tower is the way to go! The cocktails are perfectly curated and they have a nice menu of speciality drinks if you are looking for something outside of your norm. The tower comes in 3 sizes and is ideal to share. It comes with a variety of fresh fare from oysters on the half shell, clams, shrimp and ceviche. The dipping sauces are on point as well, im hungry just thinking about it! We visited 4/16/23 during our driving vacation. I researched places to eat, and we chose The Ordinary. Made a reservation a couple of weeks earlier for 5:30. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were promptly seated. What a cool building! Chelsea was our server and attentive to our needs. We started with cocktails - a Planters Punch for me and a Daiquiri for my husband. Very tasty drinks. The sun was shining through a window just right, it made my punch glow! We started with peel & eat shrimp and the stone crab. Delicious! Then a fish cake and Dave's clam toast. Also delicious. We capped dinner off by sharing a budino - so rich and decadent. I have had the pleasure of coming here three times in the last few years. Every time I've had a wonderful experience from staff to finish. I made a 5pm reservation on Resy and arrived at 5 on the dot. The hostesses welcomed us in, located our reservations and we were led upstairs to our table. The interior is as beautiful as the exterior, great photo opportunities especially upstairs. Our server, Kaitlyn, was just incredible. I love having a server who is excited about detailing and describing the menu, she sounded like she truly had a passion for food and we ended up ordering everything we inquired about. She was quick and attentive, refilling our sauces, relishes, drinks and water. She checked on us throughout our meal which was almost 2.5 hours! We started off with the middle tiered seafood tower with the addition of the Supreme caviar and drinks. We could have done without the little neck clams to be honest, they were good just not as good as everything else going on. The single ladies oysters have always been my absolute favorite oysters in Charleston so I'm glad we had a generous serving of them. Kaitlyn brought us extra creme fraiche and hotcakes to finish it off the caviar. Tackling a tower is delicious and so fun! We ordered our entrees: the swordfish schnitzel for my friend and I had the slow baked wreckfish. My friend said the swordfish was the best thing they've had in Charleston! I had a bite and it was lovely from start to finish. Initially the crust tasted nutty and sweet with some crisp texture, that fades and then you get the fish alone. Perfectly prepared. My dish was meant to be, as a hardcore lover of Tom Kha Gai I was thrilled with the first bite of my wreckfish. It was in a soup-like base that was creamy and citrusy, with the cutest spring veggies. Every bit of fish was tender and flavorful. We also had Pete's beets vinaigrette. I personally love beets, and these were loved too. The salad had some slices of blood orange, ricotta and walnuts. Absolutely refreshing. We did not see desserts on the menu so we asked Kaitlyn, we ordered both options available: chocolate hazelnut budino and the blueberry panna cotta. Both were excellent but if I had to choose I'd have the budino again. Make sure you scoop all the way to the bottom so you get some of the caramel with each bite. We were lucky to get a reservation here on our last day in Charleston due to a cancellation. During our 5 days trip to Charleston, we wanted to make sure we paid our visits to the most popular and recommended restaurants, The Ordinary was one of them. Even with making reservation a week in advance, we did not get our spot until a cancellation came up, which was great! So if you do plan to come here, make sure give yourself plenty of time to make reservation. I came here with 2 other friends and we shared. We ordered the crab meat fried rice, spaghetti with spinach and clam, and swordfish!! They were all fantastic!!! The portions are not so big so you would have room for some sweet after! I personally try to go home and make crab meat fried rice and spaghetti with spinach and clam in honor of The Ordinary in Charleston! It was that good!!! The staff was friendly and thorough! My waiter spent his time gave a tour of the menu of which each item was. This service was top notch and very impressive. However, I think it would have been better if he gave us the tour of the menu before we spent 10 minutes looking into each (which, as a Yelper, I already went through photos and recommendations on Yelp, and already chose my dish before he got to give a tour). The Ordinary is anything but. Set in a reconverted 1920s bank, the vibes and ambience of this now upscale restaurant and bar are swanky and cool. The service and food are even better. I had come here with an old friend who was visiting Charleston for the first time. The food is served tapas-style, so we ordered a few small plates to share. We started our meal with oysters that were so fresh, we were nearly convinced they were caught that morning. Our server Amber (who was extremely welcoming, friendly, and well-informed about the menu) insisted that we get the crispy oyster sliders. We were glad we listened. Taking inspiration from banh mi, everything about these sliders was perfect. The bun was fluffy, the breading of the oyster was tasty, and the carrot cut through to the palate expertly. Next up was the asparagus salad. It was served with a vinaigrette that I have to describe as awe-inspiring. It was briney, but as if the chef captured the purity of the ocean and bottled it. The vinaigrette was so perfectly synthesized that I could not identify any individual flavor. Rather, I was eating greens spritzed the ocean's sea spray. After that, we had steak tartare paired with potato chips. The meat was fresh, high-quality, and flavorful, each bite as good as the last. We literally had to pause after each mouthful for a moment to appreciate how delicious the tartare was. Our last dinner plate was the fish cake. It was nothing more than a fried fish cake served with slaw and a tomato puree. But this fish cake was crafted so delicately, that I have to believe it was the Platonic form of a fish cake. All other fish cakes aspire to be this fish cake. For dessert, we had the Carolina gold rice pudding, which tasted as if the chef boiled down the pure essence of a strawberry shortcake and only stripped away the cake. The chocolate pudding was deep; it was not rich, but wealthy. The whipped cream, chocolate pudding, crushed hazelnuts, and salted caramel were a holy unison, a nectar of the gods. I cannot recommend The Ordinary enough. This is perhaps the best meal I have ever had in Charleston. read more

Ugh. This was our third time there and it was NOT the charm. The food, as always, was incredible, but we ordered oysters pretty immediately and it took almost an HOUR for them to come which really threw off the whole pace of the meal. The oysters weren't that good as my first bite had shell pieces in it. This is such a bummer as every bite after that was truly delicious and our server was so gracious. She just should have stayed on top of the raw bar to figure out what happened with it. What a fabulous return to an outstanding restaurant! On our final night of vacation in Charleston, we were able to grab an early reservation at the Ordinary. We were planning on grabbing a seat in the patio, and as we were driving there, the restaurant called to advise that, due to the weather, they were closing the patio, but could accommodate us inside. Because one of our children is not yet fully vaccinated, we wanted to get a more isolated seating, and the hostess was very understanding and willing to accommodate the request. As we arrived at the restaurant, the storm had passed, and the staff was quickly able to get us set up on their patio. Quiet, relaxed, and a friendly waiter set the tone for what was a wonderful meal We started off with a glass of sparkling rose from Portugal which hit just the right notes with the appetizers. The Sea cloud oysters, peel and eat shrimp, and the Beeliner snapper were all heavenly, but the start of the starters was the smoked mackerel pate. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the apps - including the 12 and 16 year old boys who were expanding their palates. As good as the apps were - the entrees elevated the email even further. The boys had the gumbo and the spaghetti with clams, while we enjoyed the oyster sliders and the mustard crusted amberjack. While all were good, the gumbo was very well done - reminiscent of gumbo we have enjoyed in NOLA. But the true star was the sliders. OMG. We went back and ordered two more because..well..we could not stop. Hands down one of the best dishes we had this week. My wife and I came in last night for our anniversary dinner. Reservations were made ahead of time. Service was very friendly and prompt on all accounts. I believe her name was Annie and she was very pleasant and courteous. For an appetizer, we tried the tuna tataki and a fried oyster slider. The tuna was prepared perfectly and the fried oyster slider was amazing. I finished it in three bites, but probably could've done two. Well cooked oyster with good vegetation on the slider and a thin slice of jalapeno for kick. For my entrée, I got the wreckfish schnitzel. How often do you see schnitzel made with fish? It tasted just like schnitzel should and was very easy to eat with the sweet potato puree that came with it (and bits of bacon). I believe that my wife got the snapper and she enjoyed it as well. Not a large portion, but it was a good size for her. All of the other wait staff were very attentive and helped to clear our table as we finished various items. read more

We had dinner March 14th at The Ordinary and my wife became violently ill from a bad oyster. She was sweating and vomiting in the restaurant restroom shortly after dinner. The restaurant staff was helpful offering clean towels. However, we were very disappointed with support and understanding from the Manager. She offered nothing at the restaurant and only an apology later in a phone call. If your food causes food poisoning, the least you can do is comp a meal. This is not about money, it's about customer satisfaction and showing compassion for an unfortunate incident at your restaurant. We started with the tuna crudo this time around, which was phenomenal, and the lobster, which was good (but not quite what we were hoping for). The hype is legitimate. While my dining companions found the meal here to be somewhat overwhelming, I found it to be excellent at the time, and when reflecting on our recent Charleston trip I found this to be one of the places that sticks into my mind the most. I foremost really appreciated the fact that they really focus on and showcase the bounty of LOCAL seafood as opposed to some of the other places we visited around town, which featured more of the seafood shipped from all over that I would more typically find back home in NYC. That seafood was presented in a multitude of forms, each of them uniquely delicious. For the raw bar opening round, we forgo'd raw clams and oysters altogether and opted for some impressive stone crab claws, which are apparently just as much of a Charleston thing as a Miami one, and peel n eat shrimp, which were definitively the best I've ever had. Typically I find shrimp in general to be an extremely underwhelming affair, but that's no doubt largely due to the fact that typically I'm eating the crustacean far from it's source and freshness. Not so with these local beauties, perfectly prepared to ideal consistency and masterfully flavored with zesty local fare I simply could not stop peelin' n eatin'. Rounding up the raw bar selections was a delightfully citrusy crudo of similarly smackingly fresh line caught snapper. Next up was a exemplary spreadable smoked fish dip, not unlike the type I've become familiar with over the years from the many many trips I've made down to South Florida, albeit cheff-ed by being topped with orbs of spunky roe that pop in your mouth like salty gushers, served alongside some kind of crispy type za'tar spiced cracker-flatbread giving vaguely Middle-Eastern influence to the new-Low Country proceedings. Moving on, we did wind up sampling the local clams and oysters, just not in raw form. For Oysters we had the delectable crispy oyster sliders, apparently the house's most ordered dish and they were likewise worth the hype. I can't say I haven't had this ubiquitous starter before but rarely is it as satisfying as this version, again with the evident freshness of the local briny bivalves shining through. A more unique treatment for the oysters was the smoked oyster dish, smokey oysters in their juices along with onions and umami galore, served in a glass jar long with creme fraiche and a mini sized bottle of hot-sauce equipped with an eye dropper for precision application. It was as delicious as it was unique. As for clams, we had them served on top a bed of perfectly al dente spaghetti and a zesty tomato based sauce that was a wonderfully delicious departure to the typical vongole we so know and love back at home. Finally, along with the peel n eat shrimps, the best dish of the meal, and the one that most sticks with me would be the deliciously flavorful blue crab rice, which deliciously showcased both local treasures of blue crab and the legendary Carolina gold rice, along with a medley of local seasonal herbs and veggies mixed in combining to achieve full on local low country deliciousness. Beyond the delicious meal the place offered a welcome chance to venture beyond the very tourist focus and saturated French Quarter and downtown area where we spent most of out time in the city and check out this undeniable more scruffy, rowdier and more youthful area largely centered around the university, and I was very pleased to have had the chance. Decor reminded me of many of the classic "New-Brooklyn" culinary pioneers I frequented during my years there particularly in the later aughts, where a beautifully restored classic (or at least classic looking) older space is revitalized with new energy, while paying homage to the classic traditions they are building upon the basis over. Service was perhaps a little more scatterbrained and distracted than I found typical in Charleston, where I really found the level of service to be admirably very high, but that was in no doubt large part due to the fact that the place was packed to capacity on a booming Sunday evening, which should only further serve as evidence of the overall quality and reputation of the place. With an ambiance, food, and customer service like The Ordinary has, it's no wonder this place came so highly recommended. When we first walked in, we knew we were in for a treat. When they're in season, the snow crab claws are a must. We also got the roasted sweet potatoes and wagyu tartare. Highly recommend both those dishes. Our service was best in class and all of this awesomeness came together with a great drink. 10/10. read more
