This was our "go-to" Chinese restaurant. It "was"!! I arranged my husband's b'day dinner with all 6 kids & spouses attending. It was such a huge disappointment. Our server was so unpleasant and actually rude. There were 16 of us and you would have thought he would have the sense to think "big tip". I asked several questions b/c I wanted to try something new. He wouldn't answer my questions and told me to order something else! We had to ask for table noodles and were given 2 Tiny bowls for 16 ppl. We practically begged for pots of tea. He left us sitting for over 10 mins while he got a small pot for each end of table. First we ordered appys. Took so so long and they were soooo unattractively plated. That was the good part- they were dry and tasteless. So we went on to our entrees. Also mostly a mistake. Almost every item was soaked in oil, ugh! They were all soooo greasy. One member of the family didn't get his dinner with the rest of us, he waited almost 15 mins to receive his. We were all just about finished. We ordered a side of broccoli for 10 mo. old. Granddaughter. Waiter brought out a dish and had the nerve to charge $13 for it. She ate a total of 1 piece. She's a baby!! Didn't need a $13 plate. But back to our food. I was so embarrassed in front of all the kids. I had raved about this place and insisted on going there (even tho everyone else wanted Italian). In the past it used to be good but this was a horrible mistake I won't make again!! I had even arranged with the owner to arrive when it was his slower time since it was a Sunday afternoon. I would have thought that this consideration would have warranted better service and certainly better food than we received. NO DESSERTS AVAILABLE! Finally the check and we could leave. Still tipped the awful waiter very generously. Big mistake. After going home I checked the bill and saw that in addition to a $13 broccoli spear I was also charged for one extra dinner! I went back 2 days later to talk to owner (Tommy) . He said he would gladly go over it and get back to me with refund.. that was about 6 wks. ago. We had been charged 1 dinner more than the number of ppl we were. I was surprised at the tasteless, greasy food and terrible service having been a happy customer until that time. I've even ordered 15-20 take out lunches for my club. Never again! Not even the courtesy of a return phone call after over-charging for an all around awful birthday lunch. If it had been 1 or 2 orders a bit unsatisfactory, I can understand but all of our dinners had some issues with them. If I don't want to drive to queens for some decent canto food this place will be my place to order when I'm near home. My husband and I grew up on HK food and have frequented the Orient over the last four years without issue. However, while food is servicable (neither here nor there as most dim sum dishes are prepared off-site and heated from frozen anyhow), we will not return again. Their management is shortsighted and unwilling to even try Samsung Pay - an option that functions on *every* credit card reader and one we've used successfully over the year with various merchants. When told that we would not return, they rolled their eyes and laughed as if not to care about repeat customers. This should serve as a huge red flag to any prospective patrons as it does not cost much to leave a good last impression... Considering the premium price we pay for the the convenience of dim sum near our home on LI, I recommend going instead to Fortune Wheel, Jani, or any of the other dim sum restaurants popping up around here these days. Complete total hidden gem! Who would have thought good quality Chinatown-esque dim sum in Bethpage LI of all places?! We drove up and from the exterior it really didn't look like much however we saw a bunch of Chinese people sitting inside enjoying their meals as well as a bunch just leaving with their bellies full so we were content enough with that to go in and try it ourselves. The space is fairly large once you walk in with a full bar that greets you as you wait for the hostess to seat you. We came at the tail end of service, around 1:45, so it seemed we beat the rush. Still the food was fresh, hot and the selections were plentiful. 2 adults and 1 6yo starved after swim class, we chose 15 different items. Stand outs were their sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf: this dish is always a hit or miss for me at most places but here the rice consistency was perfect, there was a very nice ratio of meat filing:rice as well and the entire thing was seasoned deliciously; the spare rib tips in black bean sauce: very meaty pieces of meat in a sauce that my 6yo literally drank from the little bowl it comes in; the chicken feet were huge and tasty; the crystal shrimp weren't over done and the shrimp had a fresh clean sweet taste; the egg custard tarts were so good that we ended up ordering a second round. At the end of our gluttony the bill with tax and tip came to $50. Not bad at all. We will most definitely be back! read more

Like any good Jewish person (although I am not really religious), I went to eat Chinese food with my family on Christmas day. Being one of the only open restaurants in the area, this place was packed. They obviously knew the long lines were coming and they were fairly organized about it. We only had to wait around 15 mins and we were seated. A little cart was brought around with buns and this was exciting because who doesn't like buns? Well vegeterians dont! They also had lotus flower pancakes for me which were AMAZING. It was more like a dessert. We ordered our meals and they were very fresh and steaming. This was my family's go to Chinese restaurant growing up. Since moving out east, it's been a while since I've visited but I was in the area on a Saturday afternoon. My mom and I stopped in for a dim sum lunch and it was awesome. Service is so quick, and the dim sum came around on the cart so you can pick out what you want and then it's just placed on the table so you can start eating immediately. Three of us ordered a fried chicken, but a very noticeable feather still attached on the tip of the wing. It was a fairly complete, dark color feather about one and a half inch long. Asked the waiter, the waiter said it just a little feather, you can remove it yourself, or just don't eat it. Then we called the owner, the owner also said it is common to see feather on the chicken, they didn't make any money on the chicken so it cant be that clean, but if you want no feather on your chicken, send in a special request next time and they will specially remove all the ends for us. Three minutes later, one of the waitress then bring another full fried chicken to SHOW us that there are feathers still attached on the chicken. I paid close attention, I did see a few. But at least none of them are one and a half inch long. I am not sure if I was overreacting, but it sure was very unpleasant. The dark feather was so noticeable it looks like a Halloween special. The worst part was during the conversion with both the waiter and the owner, they offer no courtesy to us for what we have to endure. Looked like they don't care if their fried chicken has feather or not and the conversion went nowhere. Over the years the Orient has dramatically changed from a NYC style Cantonese enviornment to a more sophisticated Chinese restaurant...Tommy used to be in the dining room all the time and would comment to me "you never use a menu" that was because I could ask him whats good that day and he put the order in. This allowed us to try things I would normally never pick on the menu. The food is still always great, and their lunch time dim sum is fun, particularily on the week ends. Actually, I preferred the old Orient, but Tommy's vision is good also. The Orient would have gotten 5 stars but for two things, we went for dim sum and quite a few items were sold out, so I didnt get to try all that I wanted and the food made me really thirsty, its funny because we had our usual pots of tea on the table the server asked if we wanted water, I said "no" he brought it anyway and said "you are going to need it"...he was right! The food was outstanding though and even though we were there around lunch time we were lucky to not have a wait. The prices are also really, really reasonable. Just had Dim Sum here over the weekend and wasnt too thrilled. Did not feel well after so not sure if it was something else I had the night before or just what i had for dim sum... The wait wasnt too long so that was the only plus. Dim sum carts/trays were very slow in coming around and the choices didnt vary as much as we'd like. One was touted as being shark fin dumplings and they just tasted and looked like pork dumplings. Not sure what made it shark fin?? The chicken feet were tasty but a lil overcooked so they were a lil mushy. Roast pork buns were good as was the sticky rice but the tofu skin rolls (meat or veggie) only had the tofu skin going for them, wasnt a fan of the fillings. We had a few other orders but I dont remember them. We happened to be in the area looking for a brunch spot and were too far from Fortune Wheel.....*sigh* read more

Came here with my husband to eat dim sum and we were very excited to go out amidst the ongoing pandemic. My shrimp shu mai had a long piece of hair inside it. I almost vomited. My husband looked at me mortified and we flagged over our waiter who said "it is just a brush hair that we use to oil dumplings" I was not convinced. He did not even take the plate away. I felt queasy and immediately asked my husband if we could leave.. he promptly paid with credit card, and they charged us 39.40 instead on 36.40 because they said the "6 looked like a 9." After a long wait when restaurants started to open for take-out and the dine-in, we were thrilled to learn "The Orient Restaurant" had resumed serving the same GREAT food with the same friendly staff, just fewer tables, and guests. We were greeted by Tommy the owner and his staff when we went for dine-in, The food was the same flavor profile and presentation as we remember it to have been 4 months prior to the massive C-19 shut down of NY businesses. we had a great meal and as usual, closed don the restaurant when we departed. One week later we ordered Take out as I did not want to go to eat out so we ate in. The food was as good as it was in the restaurant. The packaging was great no leaks and the portion size was the same, in fact, we made several meals out of the 3 dishes we took out using them as sides with different mains we cooked in house. Thanks to Tommy and his entire we felt safe and well-fed by you and your entire friendly caring staff at "The Orient Restaurant." We will be back again and again. read more

Very well done Hong Kong style Chinese cuisine, although it can be hard to convey the message that you are not here for beef and broccoli or General Tso's chicken. I'm not a total expert on this sort of fare but, I can tell you it's on of the best places east of Flushing,Queens. The service is very efficient, but as I do hate at times too efficient and they tend to rush you along too much this knocks off a star for me. I don't like to feel like I'm eating at a factory. Also this is epidemic in a fair number of Chinese restaurants, LOWER the lights, I also don't like to feel like I'm on display and getting a suntan off the neon glow of the lighting. I was seriously contemplating writing this review because this had been my family's go to spot for Chinese food for years now. Everything like we go I notice it becomes slowly more and more popular. This is hands down the best Chinese food spot on Long Island. The food is appropriately priced and super tasty! I would describe the food as your classic Queens style Chinese food. Tea is always on tap and it's always super soothing. It's a great way to start and end your meal. Now onto the good stuff... the food! I always have to get their hot and sour soup. It's one of my favorite things and they make it perfectly. Just the right amount of sour but since I like things extra spicy I ask for some hot oil on the side to add to everything else I order. They also make incredible soup dumplings. These things are filled with tender pork and at least a Tablespoon and a half of soupy goodness. The dumpling wrapper is thin and delicate and just holds everything in place. After the first bite it transports your tastebuds to savory, porky, umami deliciousness! Another MUST item is the roast duck! This is seriously my favorite thing on the menu. The skin is crispy and the meat is juicy and soft. I have no clue what they season the duck with but it is jam packed with flavor and is probably the best thing on the menu. I also ordered the Bi Feng Tang or Typhoon Shelter style Lobster. This is a bit of an off menu item but if you ask they will make it and it will exceed any expectations you previously had if Chinese food. It's garlic fried lobster with crispy batter and fried garlic encasing a whole lobster! It's so good between the salty and garlicy outside combined with the sweet lobster meat on the inside you'll be licking all the crispy bits off the bottom of the plate. The inside is no frills and we have only had one time where they forgot one dish and it was quickly brought out 10 minutes later. This is and will continue to be my favorite Chinese food on Long Island. They also do dim sum every weekend and it's crazy good! They roll around different carts and it's seems like it will never end. The shrimp wrapped in wide rice noodles is really good. You also can't go wrong with any of the beef or pork buns too. The only downside is that they don't do delivery but I think it's cause if they did they would have to hire an army just to deliver the food from how many orders they'd receive. This has always been a go to fave for my family and I! The food here is not your average Chinese spot while it offers more authentic options. Our favorites include the pork soup dumplings, the crispy salt and pepper shrimp, the walnut mayo shrimp, bean curd seafood soup, and the steamed Chilean sea bass fish. Never a let down!!! So yummy. Also be sure to ask for their Indian-Chinese SPICY RED SAUCE which is a mix of garlic, ginger, red and green chilies, and soy sauce. We even order this to go because we love this sauce SOOO MUCH it really brings out the flavor in all the dishes and adds the perfect kick to the food. Staff is okay but what I do like is that they really work with your likes and dislikes to make sure you order something to your liking. Also the place closes pretty early (9pm I think) so come earlier rather than later. read more

For entrees, I ordered the Filet Mignon with asparagus & lotus root and my fiancé wanted to try the chicken and broccoli. They were pretty good. My kids and I are regulars, Saturday 11:30am for dimsum after soccer games. If we didn't go, would have a riot on my hands. Dim sum is good, fresh and of high quality; siumai, harkau, shrimp wrapped in chow fun noodle, sparerib in blackbean sauce, chicken feet, tripe, stuffed eggplant, chives dumpling pan fried. Their special dimsum dishes are great as well; have tried clam with black bean sauce, fried squid etc. Congee, noodles (panfried noodles with seafood, the best) and rice dishes are as good as any of the Flushing dim sum places (lived there for years, I know). Reasonable prices across the board, given the lack of comparable places near by....Fortune wheel is ok, but we choose to go to Orient. Contrary to other posters, I think their redesign was tasteful, simple, clean and up to date. Been to too many dim sum places where its too dingy or too fancy/ornate (usually pay for the privilege of eating there). Not that we'd order it, but they also serve the Americanized "Chinese" food for those that want it. Given the location and the customer base, they need to cater to many tastes. Usually busy, it signals that the food inventory is turned over frequently and relatively fresh. Lastly, brought some friends over recently who are recently from mainland China living in Queens. Great place for dim sum. Place is not that large, so carts come around quickly. Everything was hot, fresh, and good. The seafood pan fried noodle dish was very good, albeit a bit on the medium size compared to other places. The boss was freaking out over the possibility that the glass partition would be broken. I guess he's still getting adjusted to the renovation. The front area is a bit strange because the wood paneling and glass shelves look like it could be a bar, especially with the TV. Unfortunately, it blends with the entrance area, so it's not really a chill place. A great, and possibly better, alternative to Fortune Wheel. read more

This used to be my go to Chinese food spot, the food was always amazing the service was always great and even their take out portions were huge. I don't know what happened to this place, it's like they took a turn for the worse over night. We got some take out the food was horrible, flat out horrible. We're known on a first name basis here and when I called and asked them they said that's impossible and maybe I should try and eat it again, we're not apologetic did not seem to care and they were just flat out extremely rude. I tried coming here again and had the same issue, the food just wasn't the same as it once was and an establishment that always provided great service no longer provided us with the service we had come to expect here. Best Chinese food around! I've been here several times for dinner and it's so much better than anything close. Everything on the menu is good. They actually use real quality ingredients as supposed to your typical Chinese take out. Go-to order: House special wonton soup, spare ribs, chicken and shrimp in black bean sauce, and chicken chow fun. All of it is excellent. Every time I go I tell myself I want to order new things but love that typical order so much. Needless to say, I go enough so that shouldn't be a problem. Staff is incredibly rude and demeaning. The are not honest and are deceitful about their prices (e.g., $23 for a lunch plate listed as $12 online). When asked about the bill, I was ridiculed, yelled at, and several staff members actually pointed their fingers in my face. I was told "You don't eat enough Chinese food" and "everyone knows the online menu is wrong." Tommy, the owner of the restaurant, was one of the staff members who was yelling abusively.
