We ordered Chicken Pakora and Momos, for apps and House Special Noodles, Hakka Chicken, Eggplant, and a fried fish dish in a tamarind sauce over bean sprouts. Portions were generous, food served straight from the wok, dipping condiments were a little different and delicious. The family that owns the place is friendly accommodating and attentive. It's a Halal restaurant so guess what? No booze, and thus no loud drunks. LOL I've got an issue with noise levels in restaurants and even though this little place was pretty packed, I could still have a conversation over dinner without screaming. In the early 1800's a large number of Chinese citizens, immigrated to Calcutta, a city in the northern part of India, close to China. After becoming established, many of these immigrants started opening restaurants to support themselves. And then, because of a lack of certain ingredients, and to tailor the food to the palates of the Indian citizens, these Chinese chefs altered their recipes. And these new recipes, incorporated certain Indian spices, and a heavier use of spices and sauces - which made these new style dishes especially appealing - and created what is known today as Indo-Chinese, or Indian-style Chinese food. MASTER CHEF MIKE TENG Mike Teng, son of Hakka Chinese parents, was born and raised in India. He started cooking at 14, and eventually became a head chef preparing Indo-Chinese food in Mumbai. Then in 1984, he emigrated to the US and worked in the restaurant industry, until he became executive chef at the famous Jade Eatery & Lounge in Forrest Hills Queens. This is not the kind of place that am used to going, it's set up as a food to go place, but it is a nice restaurant inside, you get in find a seat and look at the menu, once you decide on your choices, you go up to the counter and let them know, then you wait to be served. Oh, I forgot, you now have to go to the front of the restaurant and get your eating materials, they have paper plates, bowls and plastic forks ,knives and spoons, then you bring those to your table, once the food is brought to you (in plastic to-go plates, you eat, the food was actually good, the service was friendly and helpful. What happened to Tengs ! I was there when they started off and fell in love with the husband and wife owners that always have a bright smile and a warm hello with my actual name which took me back a little because I had only ordered there twice at that time ! Ordering over the phone the person was extremely nice and helpful and it was the same at pick up. We tried the chicken pad Thai, little spice with extra spicy sauce on the side. It was delicious! Perfect blend of flavors and such a large portion! I also loved that there were cooked peppers in it, not all places do that. The sweet soy sauce dip for the pancakes is on point. If you like it spicy I'd ask for hot oil. The hot oil is flavorful and has a level of depth that other Chinese takeouts don't have. Their plain fried chicken wings are finger licking delicious. The batter is light and crunchy. The meat is seasoned quite well with the perfect amount of salt. We happened on this place on a Friday evening on NY. The person behind the counter welcomed to order at the counter and to be seated to be served. The selection was a good variety. The food was fresh, hot, and came out quickly. We had one shrimp fried rice, chicken and broccoli, and sesame chicken. I detected that the oil they use is a little heavy. OMG! The best halal chinese i have had in a long time. Everything was so delicious and fresh and came out within 15 minutes. So happy for the Teng family to be part of our long island community. I no longer have to go to brooklyn for halal chinese. Fried wings were delicious, suggest to change order size to 6 like the other ones. Manchurian wings not so favorite of mine but my husband enjoyed. I prefer more on the spicy side but it was giving it a sweet kick thats why but taste was great. Chicken lo mein was amazing loved every single bite of it especially all the different vegetables they had in there Fried rice amazing no words for it. Asked for Broccoli and they had it in there gave it such a good kick. Singaporean rice noodles had a curry taste to it and loaded with egg and shrimp, good different taste it had Manchurian soup tasted like Tangra's hot and sour soup which is my favorite so i loved it with the vinegar pepper on the side. Teng's is a little hole in the wall off of Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown. It's got tons of parking, a rarity among places along Hempstead Turnpike. The owner, Mike, is an angel. He and my dad started talking about their mutual friend, whose recommendation brought us into Teng's in the first place. Amongst the first of many pleasant surprises of the evening: Mike and my dad reminisced about working in India... conversing in Hindi!!!! My Indian dad and Mike, Chinese, worked in the same town in India in the late 80s. What a small world. On the Chinese food menu was chicken pakora, not at all what I would have expected to see on a chinese food menu. It was fantastic pakora, one I want to have again as soon as possible. I had the chicken wIth broccoli and a side of brown rice. The food was brought out promptly and tasted wonderful. My dad has the Hakka chili chicken, which definitely had a kick to it but wasn't too overpowering. I liked the sample I had from him. He said it reminded him of India. Teng's was a happy indo-chinese surprise. We had sliced orange and fortune cookies after. Teng's offers free delivery within 5 miles, which unfortunately excludes me from their delivery service. Can't recall the first time I heard about Teng's but all I know is that when I tried a generous spread of their food, I was sold. This is what Chinese comfort food is all about...but you will rarely catch me in the summer over here. It's all about the cold days in spring (which the island be getting lately) , fall and winter time . I'm crazy for noodles and their hand pulled is DY NOOO MIIITE (if you know the reference you're cool). Service is pretty simple, grab a seat, figure out what you wanna eat , give your order at the counter, keep tab open or pay right there. Next you go and gather your plates , condiments napkins chopsticks forks etc and proceed to be seated and wait. Refreshments are pretty standard , bottles of water , cans of soda and a few surprises here and there (I haven't checked out the surprises yet) . Service is pretty quick, and you get your food nice and hot. The vibe inside is for families and couple, average noise with classic Bollywood tracks played in the background. Need I say more? Noodles were fire, the general Tso (had to try it at least once) was fire and their beef is tender. Listen, anything you order here , will be quite difficult to disappoint. This is such a cute family business that recently became halal. I love hoe fresh and home cooked everything is. Very rare to find authentic Chinese food thats halal on LI. For appa we got the Vegetable Corn Soup and added egg to it, it was so warm and comforting, perfect for this weather. We also got the Pan Fried Chicken Mo Mo, I didn't try them but my family loved them. The Vegetable Egg Roll could've been better, was a but bland. In terms of mains, the fried rice was so good, you could tell it was made fresh, and not overly salty or greasy like other places. My brother and sister had the General Tso's Chicken which they said was good. I got the Hakka Chilli Paneer and I was blown away. I ordered the Manchurian chicken, Orange chicken, fried vegetable dumplings, and scallion pancakes. While I was very pleased with the portion sizes, the dishes themselves didn't hold up. The chicken in both dishes were incredibly chewy and stringy. To the point it was a bit of a workout to eat it. The Orange chicken had no hint of Orange flavor whatsoever. I did enjoy the flavor of the Manchurian chicken, but again, it was difficult to eat. The dumplings were just ok, and the scallion pancakes while crispy were super greasy.
