Our group ate here on a Friday night. Usually this place is a treat (there are some nights where I would do horrible things for their table noodles), but this experience was not the best... the food itself was delicious. Noodles on point, shrimp wonton soup excellent, and the shrimp with broccoli entree was pretty good too (albeit a little heavier than I anticipated). Our dissatisfaction came from the service. INCREDIBLY slow given the restaurant wasn't packed. It took an unacceptable amount of time from when we sat down to when our waiter even arrived, and even longer to get the complimentary noodles and tea. Even when we finally placed our order, it took over 30 minutes for a couple of appetizers and 4 entrees, one of which they got wrong... and what was probably most irritating is that the staff spent more time and attention cleaning a table that just finished eating, rather than attending to diners still in the restaurant. And it was after 8pm when they close at 9, it wasn't like another party was coming in for that table. I love this place man, but ya gotta be better. read more

Seven of us met for a Monday night dinner at the Jani in the Cherrywood Shopping Center. We were able to get a big round table in the back of the restaurant. The extensive menu had something for everybody. Portions were generous, price is reasonable and service on point. My wonton soup was hot and full of flavor. My spareribs were huge and the meat fell off the bones. Eggrolls, sushi, rolls, eggplant with shrimp and mango. Chicken were equally wonderful. It's in a strip mall off Jerusalem and Wantagh Avenues with ample parking, a few blocks south of the Southern State Pkwy. When entering, on the right side there are lots of tables and booths surrounded by window cases full of pretty teapots. A clay warrior statue in the front and back stand guard. On the left side is a partially open kitchen and the takeout register. The extensive menu covers various basic Chinese and Japanese selections. We shared the shrimp and spinach wonton soup to start. The broth was wonton, the spinach wasn't as soft as expected due to its inclusion of the stems, and the shrimp was a negligible part of the dumpling it was wrapped in. My son enjoyed their chicken and broccoli as well as their steamed vegetable dumplings. My wife and I enjoyed their 6 steamed crystal shrimp dumplings appetizer. So far, so good, but the big disappointment came with the boneless ribs appetizer. The sauce was good, but the pork was barely edible because it tasted as if it had been pre-cooked, left to harden and dry, before being re-heated and served ... not fresh and way too chewy. I ordered it because another Yelper had recommended them, so maybe that dish isn't consistently what it should be? I had also been to Jani's about ten days earlier and it was much better. Me and the cousin I was with split the Lake Tung Ting Shrimp and Moo Shu Beef, so I can recommend both of those. On weekends, a reservation is a good idea. read more

Tried this place for the first time yesterday. The interior is so nice: very clean, white table cloths, staff in black suits, classy, and so many tea pots with not even one speck of dust to be seen. Booths are large and spacious, and immediately upon sitting down got menus, a pot of steaming tea, and crispy noodles with mustard and duck sauce. Ordered boneless spare ribs*, egg roll, Szechuan chicken, pineapple fried rice, and chow fun. Everything was presented so nicely, and was so flavorful and delicious. The only thing about this meal I could speak about is their hot mustard, which seemed more watery than other hot mustards I've had. *No picture of the spare ribs, as they were so good they were gone in five seconds and well before I remembered a picture! read more

The worst food I ever had. We ordered take out for 5. The boneless spare ribs were so hard couldn't eat them. The steaming pork dumplings were all dough and very little meat. My son ordered Blossom chicken it came without sauce. We ordered cold noodles and sauce the sauce was separate and tasted terrible. We asked for extra duck sauce they gave one cup and it was half full and we had 5 people. They threw in a bag that had one mustard and one soy sauce and 2 teabags of tea. Great local choice for lunch. Excellent service. Plenty of seating. Clean. Lots of tasty Chinese and Japanese selections. I had a simple choice , Chicken and broccoli, excellent. And I'd like to return on a cold wintry day to try the Nabeyaki Udon Soup, a delicious and hard to find prepared correctly choice. Lunch specials and early bird dinner specials. Great place. I used to live not that far from the restaurant and it hasn't changed. Food was great! Service was a little slow though, granted it was busy and the day before 4 of July. Even thought it was slow, the waiter was still very nice. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by the bar. There is a thin 'hallway' to get to the stand to be seated. I went with my in-laws. They said that they called the restaurant the morning of, which I do believe them, but the restaurant didn't have a name down for us. Which was weird. They were able to seat us anyways. There are glass shelves that have different on glass tea pots on three out of four of the walls. They have booths along those walls as well. Which was very uncomfortable after a while. The floor I believe was carpeted. Other than that the food was good and would be coming back for more. I recommend coming here. read more

The ambience is what a Chinese restaurant should be but never knew how. Beautifully decorated with old fashioned Asian tea kettles and Asian figurines. From the hot tea served at your sitting and the giant crunchy noodles with duck sauce, they're not trying to be overly modern and mix it with some weird fusion. Jani always serves an amazing meal. Elegant yet approachable atmosphere. Big half round bench seating as well as tables. Serves amazing Chinese cuisine and sushi. The favorite dishes are fish in black bean sauce and Supreme Delight. The young chow fried rice is also great. The surprise star of the show are the fried wonton strips that are served when you sit down. Very hard not to get full on those alone. They also make a delicious pina colada. I have always loved Jani in Wantagh. We eat in and do take out. In 8 years I never had a negative issue. Well last night topped it all. We went in for a quick bite before going out dancing. As I sat down my button popped off my blouse. It was the only button that kept the shirt on. My server Lisa came over to take our order and I asked her if she had a safety pin so I could tack my blouse closed. She left and came back with a needle and thread and said she can sew it back on for me!! WHAT??? Omg talk about above and beyond. Well she saved the day for me and sewed it on in 1 minute. We went to Jani on Saturday with friends after going plant shopping. I really like Jani. It's my favorite local Chinese restaurant to eat at (love the old school charm) and we've gotten take-out from there many times. We sat at one of the booths. Big Guy Comfort Factor of 9. My wife said she felt a little squished (my thighs have already apologized). The service was very good. I think I drained my water glass 3 or 4 times and it was quickly refilled every time. The food is usually very good. I like the Hot & Sour Soup, the Pork Buns, the Pork Dumplings, the General's Chicken, the lunch specials. We've ordered the Peking Duck on several occasions and it's always very very good. We thought the food was a bit disappointing this time. 3 of us ordered off the Japanese lunch specials menu. It's the first time I've ordered Japanese food there. I thought the Chicken Teriyaki was just okay. A little too sweet and sugary. My friend didn't like her Teriyaki either. The salad was nice and the Hot & Sour Soup was okay. My wife had Chicken and Mixed Vegetables. It was a nice portion. I ate the leftovers for lunch the next day - I thought it was very good. We will continue to go to Jani - for the Peking Duck when we eat in - and for their great take-out lunch specials. read more

Impossible that someone would show up with their date with no reservation, on New Year's Eve..ok things happen, rectify the situation 7 pm on New Year's Eve, we waited and they said they would seat us and 45 mins later they changed their minds and said no chance, so we left . This is takeout review during COVID-19. I appreciate to go window built in place of a front door. The food quality is better than your local Chinese restaurant when it comes to takeout orders. It comes at a justified price premium, in my opinion. I much rather have a sit down meal here, as it is not crowded or busy. It is unfortunate we must dine under these pandemic conditions. Jani offers both japanese and chinese options on the menu . It has a fairly large seating area . The vibe is casual, come as you are ! i have never tried the Japanese options , but the Chinese are all pretty good . I also have only done take out , which is efficient and friendly . I took home hot and sour soup , which was exactly as i anticipated . Great flavor and filled with all the right things . The sautéed eggplant also good , tasted as expected . Nice size portion . The boneless spare ribs and fried rice were ok. I probably would pass on both , but go back again and order something different :) read more

Was on Long Island for a family affair. Try to get some good New York Chinese food when there. This place does not dissappoint. The restaurant is large and beautifully decorated with Oriental china and murals. There is a lot of seating. They have a counter area for single diners. The food and service were great. We had bbq ribs, pork egg rolls, steak with mixed veggies, General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, fried noodles with duck sauce and hot black chinese tea.. The ribs were large, meaty and tender. The egg rolls were stuffed. The food was surprisingly NOT loaded with salt. We had two waiters serving our table of eight. They were very attentive. Have a Tsingtao or Kirin Ichiban beer or even an exotic cocktail...have some scallion pancakes or spare ribs and one of the numerous CHINESE or Japanese entrees and you're good to go. When considering what word comes to mind for Jani, it would be "solid." My father really likes this place so we've gone a couple times and each time I order the same thing: an avocado cucumber roll and the Buddhist's Delight. Both are AOK, although last night, the Buddhist's Delight arrived in a puddle of cooking oil which I didn't love. Otherwise, it's pretty standard, tasty and although not a dish I'd go out of my way for, sometimes simple is what you'd crave. The avocado cucumber rolls are always decent, too. There's not a ton of vegan options but there are enough to satisfy. One way in which Jani stands out is the surprisingly pretty interior. It's in a strip mall so you don't expect much, but they have quite the array of China and statues that line the walls in glass cases. They've put a fair amount of attention to detail in the decor overall, with carved wood accents and even some large stone statues at the back. The ceilings are high and lighting, while brighter than I'd normally like, is overall pleasant. Jani wouldn't be a destination spot, but it's close to my father's house and he's a huge fan of the Szechuan chicken. They have a full bar and make his Manhattan just the way he likes it. read more

I am an old school patron of Jani's from when there was a location in Melville. That restaurant closed awhile ago, and we were never able to find anything that was remotely as good in the area. Recently we were in Wantagh and were surprused to see it, so we decided to try it! Our experience was everything we had hoped it to be. Food is delicious, service is excellent and the staff are always inviting and courteous. I have made reservations several times, and we are always accommodated and given a great seat. There are never any issues or difficulties. The restaurant ambiance is clean and elegant, a throwback to the 80's but that's what I love about it. The teapot collection is still part of the restaurant and it has grown considerably larger over the years. It has become a place where we celebrate special occasions eith the family as well as a place for a great lunch special. Prices are extremely reasonable and the portion sizes are ample, we always have extra to take home. This restaurant really should have a higher rating than it does. I give it 5 stars and I am a very picky person. We have returned...again and again! You will not be disappointed. read more

I really like this place! The food is tasty with some great traditional options. The prices are good for what you get. There's plenty of wonderful cocktails with those little fancy cocktail swords that I haven't seen since I was a little kid. The service has always been good and I like their interesting decor.
