My work always orders sandwiches from here and my coworkers are always happy about it! I finally stopped by with my work bestie, and I'm so glad we did! This spot is super clean, cute, and has such a warm, welcoming vibe. There are so many options to choose from, but I went with the turkey sandwich because I'm a girl that likes her turkey!. They were not shy with the turkey (which I love), and the Italian dressing took it to a whole new level! So flavorful and perfectly balanced. I didn't even get a chance to take a picture because it was devoured within minutes! I ended up sharing with my mom and she was wowed as well! I also tried the tiramisu, and it was absolutely out of this world. Honestly, I would've bought every single one if they had any left (I bought the last one, lucky girl!) Since this summer '25 I have struggled to find a duplicate sandwich like the one I found in L.A. I searched and tried other spots here in Bakersfield but no one came close, that was until I landed here. The place is very spacious, clean and customer service is excellent. I didn't care to know about any other sandwich other than the Italian sub. I ordered two Italian subs just in case I liked it, along with tiramisu, lemon cake and some potato salad. Italian sub is a 10 out of 10! The desserts are fantastic and the potato salad is unique. I will now claim this as my favorite sandwich spot here in Bakersfield. read more

I needed a place to study while my daughter was in class at BC. I tried the local chain coffee house, but they didn't have outlets for me to plug in. City Sandwich was recommended by a friend, and here I am, studying while I'm enjoying this delicious lunch. First of all, I had no clue what to order. This is my first time here. The person behind the counter was so helpful because everything looked so appetizing. She suggested the #1 Sandwich. It's usually served cold, but I asked for it to be a hot sandwich. They were more than accommodating. She said that all their sandwiches can be served hot. Served in a Pyrenees loaf, I can only finish half of it. I also had the potato salad (sorry, I forgot a photo). It was so good.. I devoured it with a quickness. It wasn't overpowered by the red onion, and it was seasoned really well. It was a very potato potato salad. Last but not least is the dessert... come on, what's homework without a little touch of sweetness? The chocolate chip cookies were calling my name. It's so soft and yummy! I'll definitely have to have the second cookie with a cup of hot coffee. Definitely perfect way to end this study time with me, myself, and I. I just happened to be on the Eastside one late afternoon; such a chaotic day and hadn't had a chance to eat anything. Famished, I looked on Yelp for food suggestions and found this hidden gem. I love that it is locally owned, but of course what caught my eye were all the great reviews. (One 5 star reviewer said he had ben going here for 20 years? Wow!) I knew exactly what to order. For this time. (Next time I am getting it "hot" with double meat - another yelp pro tip!) As others have commented, the customer service was great; the patient person that helped me was very helpful. I took a long time to decide what sides I should try, so I decided to try everything that other reviewers had liked. There is a discount if one orders three sandwiches, so that is what I did. People really seemed to like the turkey sandwich; and I was torn as to whether I should get the hot or the cold, but chose the cold and for simplicity had them all prepared the same way. I had avocado and bacon added .... yelp pro tip! We also ordered one side each of the macaroni and potato salads as well as the chili because other reviewers had commented on how much they liked those sides. . . It was hard to not taste everything by the time I got home, but was good and waited. It was well worth the trip there - everything was as good as the other Yelp reviewers commented, and I am so grateful to them for their suggestions.... Yep, our Turkey subs with bacon and avocado were delish! We loved each of the sides; I liked the macaroni salad maybe better... my bf liked the potato salad ... we were only sad I only got one side of each to share. The chili was really good. We added some sour cream; and had some chips with it to make it go further. I was full off of just half the sandwich! They also sell large pickles, potato salad, and a variety of bottled beverages. The pickle and potato salad were great! Nice folks, too. I always drove past this place when I'm on the east side but never went in till this month. Now I'm wishing they had a location on my side. Place here is clean and spacious. The workers here are super nice and helpful. They really know their menus and can make some great recommendations for first time goers. I ended up getting the number 1 but toasted and it was everything I ever wanted. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. My favorite thing about these sandwiches is the lettuce. Yes, the lettuce. They shred it in such a way that it's just a clean, satisfying crunch every time! You dont have to worry about ripping your sandwiches innards out with these! This was my first time visiting Bakersfield and one thing I always do when I'm on a trip for work is to try as many great restaurants as possible. I was going to go to Jersey Mikes but there wasn't one close to me at the time so I stumbled upon this when I searched for "Sandwhiches" on Apple Maps. It's a small shop, family owned and the ambiance made me feel very welcomed. The very nice woman helped me out and answered any questions I had for her. I ordered the #1, sub turkey instead of ham and I added bacon. Let me tell you, the bread is fresh and has a nice flaky touch on the top section. The sliced cabbage was new to me but I actually really like it. I should've asked for extra oil and vinegar but that's just because I like extra on any sandwhich. The meats paired well together and overall the sandwhich was very delicious and filled me up. I've been going to city for years, literally since I was a kid. It's been through a couple of different management/owners. The newest owner is wonderful. They are now open all day, meat is quality, and lot on sandwiches. They have ice cream now, and even breakfast. They have kept true to the roots, just upgrading some of the extra stuff which I love. Never again. Came here for breakfast as it was nearby and i had just finished grocery shopping at Albertsons. I asked what the breakfast menu items consisted of because it wasn't really clear other than "breakfast bowl" or "breakfast sandwich" and she sighed and made it seem like asking that was a problem. Even my friend noticed. I ignored it because whatever, it was no big deal at first until I got my food and it took a while to make just for this. **Introduction** I recently was on social media and was looking at these amazing sandwich spots on the East Coast. That my mind going about what sandwich places we have in town, I feel like we don't have very good ones. Jumped on Yelp, it was surprising that Bakersfield has maybe less than a handful that are really good. City Sandwich was recommended by a friend and here we are. **Environment/Atmosphere** It's a small spot with possibly 8-10 tables for seating and sits in a shopping center with lots of parking. I have actually seen this place a few times when getting food from the pizza spots a few doors over but always forget them when feeling the need of a sandwich. Plus they are quite a drive for me, opposite sides of town. Nothing special inside, plain and simple tables with chairs and some plants for décor. They their menu to the right on the wall as you approach the counter to order. To be honest it did not stand out which is why I missed it and was endlessly looking around until an employee pointed it out to me. It has an old vibe to me, reminds me of stores when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. **Food** I love different cuisines, I love an amazing noodle dish, delicious fried chicken, I just enjoy food period. One of my most cherished things to eat are sandwiches. I could eat them everyday and not get tired of them since you can make so many different sandwiches with different meat, vegetables, condiments and more. I am a definite sucker for a pastrami sandwich, especially when it's the original way of mustard, pickle, pastrami and the toasted roll. I am not picky though, I love it with shredded lettuce and all the works but it really irks me when you cannot taste the pastrami on each bite. The saltiness of the pastrami from each bite should smack your tastebuds bite after bite. City Sandwich somehow removed that delectable savory punch and it was replaced by an overwhelming acidic bite. I love vinegar however I feel there is a dangerous way to use it if you are heavy handed with seasoning/flavoring. The reason why you have to know how much vinegar should go into a sandwich is because different components directly absorb it. The bread, the lettuce, the tomatoes especially hold onto it like someone hangs on for dear life. Other than that, the sandwich was made with perfect ratio of meat to bread to veggies. You usually see most places skimp on the meat and jam pack the lettuce to make it seem like a big sandwich. One thing I also noticed is the size of the sandwiches vary? My wife ordered the turkey and I got the pastrami, they were different bread sizes by at least 2 inches. I found that odd but maybe certain ones use different rolls, I seen that at other places. **Customer Service** Take this part with a grain of salt (I guess), after dealing with the pandemic I feel customer service has not returned to the same it once was. I approach the counter to order and there are 4 employees, the one at the register ask what I would like to order. I say, "the number 21 Hot Sub Turkey Breast" to which she replied, "you want a hot sub?" I answer politely yes and she stares at me for 10 seconds and tells her co-worker next to her, "he wants a hot sub". At this point I'm confused but then another employee walks up to them out of the side area and points at the screen on the register. I assume this person is new, I respectfully waited until she finished. I ordered my next item and the same sequence places out exactly. Each sub I requested to "Make It A Meal" which adds a side and drink for about $4 more. The worker asks wants drinks I would like and what sides, I stated one chips and one macaroni salad but both drinks coke. After paying for my order, not obtaining a receipt either, I was given one soda. I informed the worker I should have two, she checked the order slip given to the sandwich makers and said I wasn't charged for it. I paid the difference and continued to wait for my order. They called my order, I went up and grab the bag and being in a rush I didn't check the bag. After driving for a few minutes I look at the bag sitting in my passenger seat and notice, no chips or salad. I usually double check my order but I guess my fault for being in a rush. It is unfortunate, especially given the up charge to make it a meal. **Conclusion** Do I love City Sandwich? No. Do I hate City Sandwich? No. Will I come back to City Sandwich? High probable. If I do come back I will definite see if the vinegar can be put on the side for myself to add it at my own discretion. I heard a lot of great things about them, I just hope that was one really off day for them. For now, I will continue my search for the best sandwich spot in Bakersfield. read more
