Went to the Sequoia sandwich shop downtown off of 18th and l first time I've ever been in this one I've been to the one on Rosedale all the time but never this one I'm checking it out for the first time pretty clean And you're just before it close for lunch I guess it closes early during the day because it's downtown You would think they would be open a little later but that's all good originally asked for my order to for here but I saw they were closing up so I said I'll just give it to me the bag but the quality of the sandwich is always on point I never complained about it cuz they're always good I got the Reuben and a large iced tea The only reason why I didn't give Sequoia a five because they just need to be open a little longer I think but that's just my opinion read more

So my review is based on their customer service. Yesterday 05/27/25 was my 39th bdy and after having a 23 mile bike run I decided to treat myself. I stopped by and got me and my kids some carrot cake which is my favorite and I must admit the best in town. I walk in and head to the counter where I wasn't treated with friendly customer service as I usually am. There was 4 young ladies and not one had a smile and not one greeted me. I have to be honest I did walk in with a messed up hair bun and like I mentioned I had just got done riding my bike for 23 miles so maybe they were disgusted idk. When my order was ready and handed to me they didn't say have a good or great day either. For now on when I want to treat myself with my favorite dessert in town I'll make sure to order online for pickup to avoid all the unfriendliness. read more

I had a training downtown so I stopped by just before 12 o'clock. There was a line to the door, but the staff got the line moving very quickly and I was ordered and seated within 5 to 8 minutes. Although there was a line, there was plenty of seating and they also offer family style seating. The restaurant was very clean and the staff was all very friendly. They offer an assortment of sandwiches, wraps, salads, chips, drinks, and salads that can be converted into wraps, which was nice. I loved all the turkey and ham with the chibatta bread. I've constantly had poor experiences here, but they're one of the few sandwich places downtown so I foolishly return. However, after today, I can't keep silent. My friend ordered first. Ever since the accident, she cannot eat lettuce. A single piece of lettuce will induce vomiting and put her entire body in convulsions. She carefully ordered her sandwich to go without lettuce, yet when she arrived to work, the sandwich had more lettuce than turkey. I ordered with my other friend. She cannot eat condiments or vinegar-based items. She can barely look at them without being repulsed. She ordered her sandwich dry, specified no vinegar or mayo, and said dry multiple times. When we returned to work, her bread was soaked and literally dripping in balsamic vinegar. I tried the chicken sandwich and the chicken tasted like it was cooked, frozen, thawed, and reheated. The rest of the sandwich ignoring that fact was okay, though a little on the flavorless side. While we're here, I wouldn't recommend the potato salad, as it doesn't taste like anything. I constantly leave without bakery items put in the bag. I get this is downtown and very busy, but if you cannot keep up with orders and making them the way customers ask, then something needs to be done. The first time I walked into a Sequoia after moving to Bakersfield, I immediately felt they were trying to mimic Specialty's sandwich shop, but more expensive with half the flavor or quality. Specialty's is who you should model yourselves after, because this Temu version isn't cutting it. I hope one day you taste good and make sandwiches correctly and improve your quality. I placed my order at approximately 12:39 p.m. and was told it would be ready in about 15 minutes. We arrived around that time, paid for our order, and sat down to wait. A few minutes later, a staff member approached us and apologized, explaining that the potatoes would take an additional 20 minutes because they were still in the oven. We discussed it briefly but decided to wait, and the staff member assured us they might be ready sooner. We were completely fine with that and appreciated the update. When we returned to work and sat down to eat, we noticed that one of our potatoes was undercooked and we didn't get our order of ranch. I called the restaurant to let them know. I was transferred to Jessica, I explained the situation. During our conversation, she stated, "You knew that we ran out of potatoes, you could have ordered something else, but you chose not to." I clarified that we were only told about the delay, not that the potatoes had run out or that there might be an issue with them. We weren't calling because the potatoes had run out, we were calling because they were undercooked, which made the conversation rather bizarre. She then chuckled and said, "I know, I told you, I know exactly who you are," which was both inaccurate and unprofessional. Jessica then offered to mail two sandwich cards, but we opted to pick them up the following day. By that point, her tone had become sarcastic, and it felt as though she was implying that the undercooked potatoes were our fault because we chose to order them. I have worked in customer service in various roles throughout my life, and I have never spoken to a customer in such a manner, it was disappointing and unnecessary. I have also never encountered a customer service employee act as rudely as she did. I would strongly encourage management to speak with Jessica, as Sequoia has always been known for great service, and interactions like this could negatively impact how the organization is perceived. So I've lived in Bakersfield for years and never been to Sequoia. I've occasionally had a Sequoia's TO-GO sandwich at Sully's, but in many cases it seemed like they had been sitting for a while. Anyway, back to actual review. Someone told me to go try their pastrami sandwich because it's similar to the super high quality version in LA and NY. Super excited to try...It's called the New Yorker and I will say it was pretty good! Thick sliced pastrami and very similar to Langer's and Katz in LA & NY, but definitely not the same! That being said, it was a good sandwich and I'd probably go back again and again for another. As far as a Bakersfield restaurants go, I'd for sure put it as a top 5 sandwich in Bako! We had the Chicken Caesar Sandwich as well and again, was very good. I can't wait to try a few more sandwiches and update my review. Service was amazing, everyone was very helpful and showed a good level of customer service. Building was clean and orders came out pretty quickly. If there was one thing I didn't appreciate, it was a sticky table, but I decided not to knock their score down for one mistake! The chicken on the sandwich was really dry, it seemed pretty overcooked. It really needed the marinara to help with the dry chicken. Couldn't really taste the cheese, it was on there but not much flavor to it. Honestly if it wasn't for the marinara it would have been really really bland. It's pretty expensive for something that tasted kind of lackluster. Not the best experience but it wasn't awful, the amount of chicken on the sandwich was pretty good just wish it wasn't quite as dry. My wife was craving their chocolate cake so we went and as always order the Broccoli and Raisin Salad 6.95. We only got dessert plus this salad for today. Well the salad has red onions that are normally diced well not this time. CAN YOU SAY YOU WANT ONIONS AND THEY ARE RED. It Ruin the entire salad and needless to say it will be going into the trash all you can taste is onions. Columbus Day lunch at Sequoias: Arrived around 12:30pm on the Monday of Columbus Day. They close at 2:15 daily and are completely closed on Sundays. Parking was a bit complicated probably because of the lunch rush hour and the place was so packed that the line was going out the front door! But at least it was moving fast... I assume because the place is located next to a bunch of offices and businesses, that a lot of people like to stop in on their lunch break. It is pretty roomy inside but again it was super packed, and felt a bit stuffy during the highest peak of their Rush hour, but luckily there was a table open for us after we had ordered our food... Plus they do have plenty of outside seating, but it was really chilly today. You can see all of the staff totally focused and working their butts off!!, and with a good attitude too! very friendly and welcoming vibes indeed. The setup/front counter reminds me of a deli at a grocery store, all the fresh meats and salads and pasta salads and cookies and cakes all behind a glass case, it was a very clean and appealing setup. We ordered two French dips and one Monterey chicken club plus three drinks, a bag of chips, and a rainbow sugar cookie. ( since everything on the menu has to be ordered separately, there are no combos) The two French dips came out first, pretty simple presentation, bread meat cheese and dip! They even slightly toast the bread! Looked very good, but One of the sandwiches was a bit skimpy though on the meat, nothing too bad. Best of all it tasted delicious. The AU JUS sauce they give you for dipping was not too salty either. Spot on. Everything about it was fresh, flavorful and the meat was tender too. The Monterey chicken club is what I got and I absolutely loved it!! The chicken was marinated so nicely, it was juicy and very tender, they even allowed me to add sauteed onions and bell peppers bell peppers, which I'm sure just made it taste even better lol, hands down the best chicken club I've ever had. The fountain drink selection was weak though and the mountain dew tasted like fizzy water. They need to get on it with fresh juices, Agua fresca, teas, and lemonades of all flavors! The main reason that I gave them a four and not five stars was because of how dang pricey they are, the quality is all there, so it makes it worth it, but the portions were very small (especially the French dips (meat wise) & for the price you're paying.) The chicken club was bigger in portions But for the club, drink and chips alone was $18, my husband and mother got the French dip and a drink and theirs was $16 each... Unfortunately I didn't take pictures. And I haven't tried the cookie yet, but all the cookies and cakes look wonderful, And I paid $2.75 for the cookie but they are huge! Overall we were very pleased because of the flavors and the freshness alone I would definitely come back again... but next time I'll probably just order the sandwich and order it to go because it did get super stuffed with all people in there. I'm not a big sandwich eater and sandwiches aren't normally the first thing I think about when I'm debating on lunch or dinner. Matter fact, sandwiches may even be the last thing on my mind, but if you happen to tell me we are going to eat lunch or dinner at Sequoia then I won't even think twice. Sequoia has a variety of hot and cold sandwiches and a variety of soups and salads. What I like about this place is you can definitely order ahead of time and when you walk in there's a line for pick-up orders and the line for the people just coming in. If you have time issues getting back to work in time then I definitely recommend ordering in advance. They have an option online on their website or you may call your order in. I honestly don't have a favorite with the sandwiches, but anything I have eaten from Sequoia has never been a disappointment. They are delicious and I would definitely recommend this sandwich spot for your next sandwich craving. They are a little bit pricier than other sandwich spots, but they give you a big sandwich and they are premium sandwiches. This Sequoia actually seems the busiest during lunch time. I have visited the other locations and this one stays busy for a little while. If you're having lunch w a friend or someone then you probably wanna have one person order your lunch and the other one scout for a table since it's pretty packed during lunch time. read more
