I am surprised to see that The Original has such middle of the road reviews. I went this past weekend for brunch and had a good experience. The vibe when you walk in is welcoming and fun. It wasn't outrageously expensive and the service was pretty good. They were busy but our server was still very attentive, my only gripe is that he was a bit slow with the refill of the bottomless mimosas. We got the brioche French toast which I thought was a great balance of soft and sweet center and slightly crispy edges. We also got the green chili poutine which is a poutine I would put up against most other restaurants, it was well balanced and not too much green chili so it turned out the entire dish into a soppy mess. I also got the chorizo hash which I would skip, there was not enough chorizo or veggies for me to qualify it as a true hash, it was more of a potato mostly dish. I honestly was expecting this food to be mediocre at best since it is in a touristy spot and I was completely wrong. I had an aperol spritz which was done perfectly. I ordered the avocado toast and it was probably the best avocado toast I've ever had. It came with a kale salad that was tossed in green goddess dressing. This place left a lot to be desired. We came here for brunch on Sunday and the place was pretty empty. We had made reservations just in case. We walked in and we're seated at a booth which was very narrow... there wasn't much room to fully be comfortable. We waited quite a bit for someone to even acknowledge us at our table. We drank our mimosas and waited patiently for our food. It was about an hour or so into being sat down that we got our food. Our appetizer was brought first, which was crispy Brussels. They were not very crispy at all. They tasted a bit old, but the glaze on them was pretty good. The food was bland. It tasted as though it had been sitting there for quite some time. The potatoes were not crispy and fresh. They felt like yesterdays potatoes. The eggs Benedict bread didn't seem like it was toasted. It was cut thick and the bread felt so overwhelming. The short rib lacked flavor and again... it just didn't taste fresh. The chicken fried steak was not enjoyed by my friends. They said it was like a big piece of steak that was breaded and was just not done right. (Edited to mention I've never had it, just going off of what they told me) The croughnuts were tasty but they also tasted like they had been sitting there for some time. It also took forever to get a refill on the mimosas. I even asked the waiter if it was possible to get a carafe so that we didn't have to wait so long for our next glass and he told us they don't do that. I don't think I'll come back here. Maybe for the mimosas but there's other places that have bottomless and have better food/service. Pretty disappointed. The decor inside is cute though. read more

This place opens early so is convenient if you want to get an early start. It's conveniently attached to the rally hotel. We came in for breakfast and had some hot coffee and cold brew. The cold brew was perfect and had a bit of its own natural sweetness. We ordered the og breakfast and the chicken and biscuits. The serving sizes are huge and you definitely get your moneys worth here. My husband typically finishes everything on his plate and he actually left some. The one thing that I found wrong with the place was that we ordered sourdough toast and were served white toast other than that everything was spot on. The sweet and spicy contrast on the chicken and biscuits was delicious. On the OG platter, the eggs were cooked perfect and they give you plenty of potatoes that have an excellent tasty spice blend on them. If you're staying at the hotel, you also get free churro bites. We have been meaning to return after highly coveted Elite Yelp event. We finally remembered to have brunch here. Immediately after entering, I was wowed by the interior decor, art deco with a modern twist. We decided to sit at a window table tucked away in the corner facing the courtyard. The staff was warm and accommodating, no complaints in this department. I went all out with their Breakfast Sandwich, which was accompanied by potatoes. The sandwich was sad looking but delicious. The egg was fried, so beware of the first bite with the runny egg yoke potentially squirting everywhere. When I first glanced at the potatoes I was excited thinking they were crunchy, but not quite as expected but still well seasoned. My wife had the OG Breakfast and liked it. My family and I (party of 5) came in on a Friday morning and it wasn't too crowded. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was very well decorated for the Christmas holiday. Our server was very pleasant and gave good recommendations. We ordered the green chili poutine, mushroom frittata, kale crunch salad, chorizo hash, and zesty blueberry pancakes. I've sat on this review for months, waiting for some inspiration or a reason to change my impression but neither seems likely to happen any time soon so it's time to get in with it... We came here for dinner with friends excited to see what The Original might have to offer. McGregor Square is bursting with energy, it's near the ball park and it does seem to have an air of nostalgia for good home cooking. The reality was less interesting unfortunately as the service was blah and so was the food. We sat outside and despite lots of seating options and no shortage of empty seats still ended up next to another group that left is feeling cramped and intruded upon. COVID-edge t I guess... The food options seemed interesting but they just didn't deliver. It was expensive and relatively boring. Not bad just not worth a repeat. Is it bad, not at all. Is it someplace I want to put in repeat, absolutely not. We walk by here multiple times each week coming and going and unfortunately, based on the lack of guests, it seems that most have had a similar experience. I want this place to be cool and fun and crazy busy and serve awesome food but it just doesn't. I think that it will soon get a makeover and then change as there are more restaurants opening net by to add to the competitive landscape. read more

I went early in the morning and was surprised when I was asked if I had a reservation. The restaurant was almost empty. The host said we could eat at the bar. We sat at the bar and after we finished, I noticed that the majority of tables were still empty. The service at the bar was horrible, the two people behind the bar were busy setting up the bar and left to get supplies for the bar. Things got weird when an older woman came in and sat down next to me. It was clear that she was familiar with the staff and there was a discussion between her and a young bartender about getting together Friday night. She brought in a Starbucks coffee and asked the bartender for a mug to pour her Starbucks coffee into. I wondered if she was a regular or if she worked there but thought it was strange that she bought her coffee at Starbucks and sat at the bar ordering nothing and talked to the bartenders. I really didn't care, I simply wanted my food which was taking a long time to get. At one point, the server said that the servers was backed up and he was leaving the bar to help. A few minutes later, our food showed up and I couldn't help but wonder how long they had been sitting under a heat lamp. read more

They offered so many recommendations, made sure to check on us when they could, and overall had A plus customer service. We started off with Brussels sprouts which were so so good. I loved the char they had to them and the sauce that came on the side was delicious with them. For dinner, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the burger. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but again, they were short staffed and we at least had the sprouts to munch on during our wait. The food came out looking fresh and hot. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I had ordered it spicy, but could have done with a bit more kick. The brioche bun was delicious, but it did get a bit soggy on the bottom. My boyfriend really enjoyed his burger and we were both fans of the shoestring fries. Overall, we had a good experience here. I had passed by The Original a few times but never stopped in. I clearly have been missing out. I came in for a Yelp event, which allowed me to taste a variety of dishes from appetizers to desserts. I started with an adult "Capri sun" which was a delicious and refreshing rum drink. Then stared with brussel spouts and devil eggs. Score the main course. The Brussels were super crispy, just how I like them and covered in seasoning and cheese. The deviled egg was light and nice as a starter. I followed up with tasty rib and steak with potatoes. Wow! The steak was cooked perfectly and the chimmichuri sauce was the ideal compliment. Clearly the star is the show. The seasoning in the potatoes was addictive, I could eaten just a plate of those. The desserts came out just in time for my sweet tooth. Brownies and apple pie gave my sweet tooth the satisfaction it needed to call it a night. Let me start by saying this chicken was the size of my hand; I was shocked when it arrived. It was crispy, well seasoned, and juicy. The sunny side up eggs on top were great and the hot honey was tasty. Below the chicken were some of the, if not the best tasting biscuits I've ever had.
