I love 5 different flavors scooped in a rectangular shape vs a ball. The flavors go well with each other. And I like all of them. My daughter ordered one of the sundaes with donuts. My previous experiences with The Original Rainbow Cone have been at Taste of Chicago over the years when I would get a little sample cup for a couple of tickets, and I gotta admit it was a pretty good treat on a hot summer day. In recent years, The Original Rainbow Cone has been expanding its footprint, including adding a presence at Buona Beef locations. The other day, one of my buds treated us each to a serving of The Original Rainbow Cone at the Skokie location. Being a slob, I chose to have my serving in a cup rather than in a cone. You get five flavors, which I favor since I like to try as many flavors as possible. The famous Palmer House flavor (New York vanilla and cherries) comes along with pistachio almond, and the more "standard" flavors of chocolate, strawberry and orange sherbet. Honestly, this Rainbow is inside, and collaborates with a Buona's, so that should tell you everything you need to know about an ice cream shop. I should never be able to order an Italian beef, and see where ice cream cakes are made in the same establishment. Secondly, I paid for a large, and a Buena employee spawned out of nowhere and made me a small. When I asked the employee about why I received a small for a large, she shrugged me and said sorry. No type remorse, or sense of urgency to rectify the situation. I will never return unless it's the location on 95th in Beverly. Teddy's Ice Cream looked way more accommodating, and fun, thus I will be taking my business there next time. read more

Took son to The Original Rainbow Cone for their Valentine's Day Special: Buy One Get One Free. Such a great treat! This location is inside Buona Beef. Parking: private parking lot with plenty of seating inside and many tables outside I love all 5 flavors: Orange Sherbert, Pistachio, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Strawberry and Chocolate. One can also get 1 flavor; son loves Orange Sherbert. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Service is excellent! The place is happy and bright. Great place for all ages. The place is a Chicago institution for over 95 years, original location opened in Chicago's south side. Locations planned to open in more midwest locations and in differet states like Florida this year. Love to come here for a happy dessert treat. read more

This location is paired with w Buona Beef, so beware of Italian beef smells! The rainbow cone is a little counter inside, giving a food-court vibe. Living on the south side for the first 20+ years of my life, I can tell you I went to the Original Rainbow at least 40-50 times. One thing I always remembered was how large the Rainbow Cone was especially when you got it in the waffle cone. So heading to the Skokie location last night, I was really looking forward to it since I haven't had a Rainbow cone in about 2 years. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. As seen in the attached photo, the amount of ice cream doesn't come close to what I remembered getting served at the Southside location. I'm not sure to chalk it up since it's not the new location or if portions were decreased to the pandemic. However the cost of that cone was about $8-$9. Moving forward if I go back, I'd rather take home a quart and call it a day. So disappointing. read more

This location is shared with Buona beef so after dinner just head right over to grab dessert which is exactly what I did. I chose the original rainbow cone because why not? I wasn't sure if I was going to like the mixture of flavors but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one of those you have to get it because it's a picture must. I was impressed with how the worker scooped the slices to put on the cone. I thought it was so neat. My favorite flavor put of the five was the Palmer House with Pistachio coming in close second. I love the fact that when you order a cone you get a cone drip tray. Such a cute little place inside Buona to get some ice cream. read more

Last night my kids and I went out for dinner and wanted to stop for icecream at rainbow cone after. it was already late but we all already knew what we wanted from so we thought we would just be a quick in and out. When we walked in there were no customers at the counter so we thought great let's order quickly and head out, the employee working there was filling up a tub of strawberry icecream for another employee. I asked if they were open she said yes and turned her back and continued to fill the tub. We stood at the counter for over 6 minutes waiting for her to finish as she kept scooping and packing the icecream. The employee who she was packing it for even looked at us in line nervously and walked back to work. I'm sorry if you have customers waiting you should take their order and scoop icecream for your co worker later that was very very rude. She didn't even apologize for making us wait the entire time either. read more

I went here for dessert after eating a sandwich at Buona's in their shared dining space. I'm not an Original Rainbow Cone fan, because I don't like some of the flavors included in it, but I do love their other ice creams. I had tried the Cookies and Cream once from their food (cone?) truck this summer during a birthday party, and I was pleasantly surprised that they carried other ice creams besides the ones in the Original Rainbow Cone. This time I tried the mint chip, and it was delicious - full of little chocolate bits, and very minty. I'm definitely a fan. I have to say I have always wanted to experience Rainbow Cone and unfortunately I should have gone to the original. I saw Anna Belaval on WGN do around town so I was excited to go. Skokie is much closer to my home so we went there. I agree with one of the reviews the portion was minuscule. It was like a tiny sliver of each flavor all together 1 scoop for $6.95. It was delicious the flavor combination really pairs well together.The staff was very friendly and welcoming, but very disappointed in the portion, especially for the cost. If I try it again, I will go to the original. Hopefully, they are more generous. read more

This one is rather new and located inside the Buona Beef restaurant. They were still settling in the server said so not all the choices I found on their websites was available. You can count on the rainbow cone for sure though and almost every one eating ice cream was eating the rainbow cone! I opted for the Palmer House which is part of the rainbow. I'm not a fan of orange sherbet and strawberry, but will most definitely have the Palmer House again. You've got to try it and based on the ingredients I couldn't have guessed it will be one of my all time favorites. They have other desserts but they had me at P.H. I'll be back. Definitely worth it! I mean rainbow cone ice cream is amazing! The service was incredible. The restaurant was open at 10, my kids had flu shots at 10, and we zoomed over from Lurie to get ice cream.
