Since my original review, my wife and I have made this our regular Sunday morning breakfast. While she has been rather strict on her order (either Crab Benedict or the crab omelet (of which both are amazing!) I have typically gone off the menu and typically try new specials. The banana bread French toast has got to be one of my most favorite. It amazes me how the bread is so light and fluffy and not sogged down by the egg. It is not heavy at all. The pumpkin pancakes are also a favorite. In fact, in about 12 trips, I have yet to eat a regrettable meal. I also love the variety in coffee mugs. Again, I have yet to drink from a duplicate cup. I have yet to waver on moving my stars down one bit. And we will continue our new tradition, even if they were closed the last 2 Sunday mornings (Christmas and New Years)

My wife and I had dinner at the Carriage House on Thursday evening November 20…read more Well, it's still one of my favorite places to dine but I'm downgrading in my rating from five stars to four stars. Why?... Well, while the prime rib beef dinner was still was delicious the portion size of the beef was greatly reduced over what we've had there in the past. Both prime ribs were only about 1/2 inch thick... In the past they have been constantly been 3/4 inch thick and sometimes almost an inch thick. While they were done to our liking, one rare and one medium rare, both were a little on the tough side and not as tender as ones we've had there in the past. It was a chilly night on November 20th and I made a reservation for one of the tables close to the fireplace in the dining room. When we got there, the fireplace was not on. I asked some of the staff whether or not the fireplace could be turned on and they said it was too early. One staff member volunteered that yes, it was pretty cold in the whole dining area. Our server with Bonnie... And she was excellent. The bill for two prime rib dinners, one cup of onion soup, two additional side salads, one iced tea, and one diet cola came to $101 plus tip. Hoping that when I return again on a night when the Carriage House is serving prime rib that both the portion size and the quality will be what I remember from the past, not what I remember from last night.

Everything I've tried has been fresh - on this visit I had the Chicken Marsala which was excellent (BTW - the dinner rolls are AWEsome!) and service has been top-notch! We made use of the online reservation system & had no trouble getting seated. Service was paced perfectly - not slow & not rushed. On this visit, there was a person playing the piano which is a fixture in the restaurant - made for a nice relaxing vibe. Prices weren't too bad, either ..which is becoming a rarity these days! Atmosphere is akin to a turn of the (last) century tavern, although there is a small modern-looking bar on the far side of the restaurant. Great dining venue in a nice little town, just off of the main highway - worth the detour!

Of the two servers they had, we had the worst of the two. She disappeared from the floor for long periods so it was difficult to even get a drink refill. Ended up sticking with water as the one cocktail I had was clearly a mix and also seemed to have no alcohol in it. Appetizer selection was limited to seafood or onion soup. Don't like seafood? Tough luck. If you like seafood with some variation of Old Bay then you'll probably like this place. Although there are much cheaper places to eat if you just want basic northerner seasoning. The restaurant was not advertised as a seafood place otherwise I would have avoided it. I ended up ordering a steak, which came with a salad and a potato. The salad and potato was the best part. Despite ordering the steak medium rare, it was unevenly cooked and dry with a leathery exterior. I would have sent it back but I didn't want to spend another hour trying to get someone's attention to resolve it. If I ever find myself in Gettysburg again, I will be sure to eat elsewhere, this was not good value for money.

During our visit we heard several birthday cheers, noticed a retirement gathering and for us it was to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. To our surprise, the restaurant created a special dining menu noting our last name and our celebration. I was taken back with that gesture and acknowledgment although it's a testament to the service and care you will experience. This venue and team do the little thing right and will exceed expectations! Regarding the service, it was second to none with multiple staff and waiters at your side. The Smokehouse offers several dining options and host large parties and even weddings. The restaurant is huge and in associated with the historic Atrium 1844 hotel and property nestled on about 25acres. To the food: There are a few options to order from the menu and if you like wine pairing this is the spot. I chose the pairing option for my duck appetizer, scallop dinner and desert although didn't opt for champagne that complemented the surprise chef offering or my dinner salad. My wife had the beet salad, cod entree, dinner salad and orange cake. Every dish was incredibly prepared with no complaints. I envision the kitchen being hustled like the Netflix series, BEAR with echos of, "yes Chef". This was truly a special dining and something I strongly recommend if it's in your budget. The ambiance of the old early American estate is breathtaking and the piano puts you in a calm for the evening of wonderful indulgence. Again, and my opinion reserve this venue for a special affair. Total bill was $270 minus tip. Sounds crazy but if you have the time and wish to create a special touch to a special occasion, the Smokehouse is a sound choice. Note: reservations were 7:15 and we walked out at 9:45. Might want to consider staying at the Atrium at this point.
