A great little place to eat. The place is full when we walked up but we were greeted promptly and offered a table. The menu offers set meals as well as open ordering. The pea soup is a must and the Hutspot with meatball was great. The service is great too, everyone is happy to help. The prices are about 25e per person and in this area that's a great deal. I highly recommend the pantry.
The Pantry serves authentic Dutch food in a cozy environment. Definitely get one of their prix-fixe menus. It includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert. If you are sharing a meal with someone, get items from a different prix-fixe menu and you can both try a variety of items. We enjoyed: * Charcuterie plate: sausages taste minimally processed and delicious * Beef and onion stew: taste slightly different than ones in America * Cauliflower and cheese oven bake: vegetarian's comfort food * Hutspot (mashed potatoes and carrots) and meatballs: non-vegetarian's comfort food * Pea soup with smoked ham For desserts, we had chocolate mousse and vlaflip (vanilla custard) and they were just okay. I'm not sure if desserts are the Dutch's strengths, except maybe the Dutch apple pie. They even bottle their own house beer. The restaurant is small. Try to make a reservation if you can. We didn't have a reservation, but went to the restaurant at around 5PM and were seated in about 15 minutes. At times, the line could get very long, but the staff is still welcoming and ensures that everyone gets served...eventually.
Hudspot was a good surprise Great pea soup too. The line was long but we were only two soon wo reservations we were seat in 30 minutes. Worth the wait. Not cheap for what's offered. Very busy and noisy and cramped. Do it
Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. They take credit cards.
Highly recommended! This is truly Amsterdam experience--a cozy restaurant that feels very Dutch. In a city with a lot of great restaurants, it is a stand out. You must be punctual. The reservations are in time blocks--so everyone enters together at the reservation time. It is orderly, not a mad rush, but they are serious about the reservation timing. We ordered Menu 3 (pictured) which was excellent for comfort food: --Trio of Dutch sausages, bread, Amsterdam pickles, and mustard --Hachee served with red cabbage and mashed potatoes --Chocolate duo with advocaat (chocolate mousse and ice cream) To get the reservation, we had to wait at our computer on the day the reservations open, then book immediately. It was hard reservation to get, but very much worth it.
Such a lovely little place! The service was so kind and the local Dutch cuisine was exactly what we were hoping for. We enjoyed everything that we ordered but I personally could not get enough of their split pea soup!
Authentic Dutch food at quite reasonable prices makes this spot hugely popular. How popular? Well, we came on a Tuesday night and everything was booked. Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. But there's comfortable, unpretentious, chill vibe here. Love the decorations inside and the staff is very pleasant. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. I think it must've been 80 proof. This is not a bad thing at all. Terrific dinner from terrific people. Definitely recommend.
SERVICE: The service was great! Of note, if there's a wait (and you don't have a reservation) you have to stay outside the front of the restaurant the whole time, you cannot walk around anywhere even if your wait is expected to be 40mins. Friendly host and servers! Patient, kind, and efficient. FOOD: Dutch food. Variety of fish and meat dishes. I had cabbage, beef stew, and mashed potatoes Their bitterballen was very good! I tried some of my friends. Limited drink options (cocktail wise), but can make a gin and seltzer or vodka seltzer. Many beer and wine options. Ambiance, cool eclectic decor inside however seating is very close/tight and tables are only a few inches from one another so don't come with large bags or expect to have space to move around once you've sat down.
Very tiny restaurant like most restaurants in this area. Space is very tight and you're very close to the next tables. In and out is not easy but they make do. We tried menu #1 and the pork chop. On the menu #1: pea soup 4/5; yummy. The meat on the side is ok but the soup is flavorful. The meat ball with the different mash potato is ok 3.5/5. The desert at the end is just yogurt, 2/5. The pork chop is good. 4/5. Not dry. Tasty. Alfa beer: the least I like out of all beer I've tried so far in Amsterdam. 2/5.
Excellent dinner--felt so cozy and homey. Even in the summer heat, this comfort food was amazing. Highly recommend the Oven Dish, Goat Cheese Croquettes, and Apple Pie.
The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. My dish was a meat ball and mash potatoes, it was delicious. The portion was so large I had 2 meals! Service was amazing, super funny and warming. We went at 5pm for a table with no reservation. We don't normally eat dinner than early but had to make sure we got a seat here! Would definitely come back. oh and this is our first time trying traditional Dutch cuisine!

We were visiting Amsterdam and wanted to have an authentic Dutch dinner. The Pantry didn't disappoint! This is the ultimate comfort food! We started with the Shrimp Croquettes which we really didn't need as the entree portions are more than enough. We decided to split the Dutch Ham (a visual as well as culinary experience and be warned-huge!) and the combo Hutspot (mashed potatoes) with sausage and added meatball was excellent! We had the La Trappe Quadrupel Ale which is a Dutch (Belgian style) Ale & was very good. The Pantry is charming, cozy & small (& they do get busy) so reservations are highly recommended (especially if planning on going during peak times). Service was also excellent! read more

Excellent place for lunch! I came by 12:30ish and there was no one here so I got a bit worried (no people usually = bad food), but by the time I was leaving, this place was completely full. I had... sausage with three kinds of potatoes - i forget the exact name. I also had Trappist dubbel(?), which was perfect with the meal. You could pay a little less and just get a sausage with one kind of potato, but i wanted to try all three. One is a kale mix, another is beef/carrot mix, and another seemed like pork mix. My favorite was the beef/carrot mix. And i know one sausage doesn't sound like a lot... but i was struggling to finish this dish. I love the interior of this place - the dimmed lights and candles plus the wall plate decorations is beautiful. I would definitely recommend this place and go again! read more

The pantry I came here with my husband to try out some Dutch food. We ordered the special #1 and #2. Menu 1: Pea soup - good, but not spectacular or special in any way. 3 mounds - they had certain flavors such as sauerkraut, kale, and one other one. They were decent. Vlaflip - my husband described it as dannon yogurt. And he's kinda right. :/ there was nothing really special about it Menu 2: Goat cheese croquettes - these were actually good, and I don't like goat cheese. Guess that's what happens when you deep fry anything though Ground beef, cauliflower, and mashed potatoes - just like shepherds pie. It was actually kinda bland, but it felt healthy due to the cauliflower. Really filling. Poffertjes aka mini pancakes - was the highlight of our meal Overall I would say that 1) the decor is cool 2) it's a very touristy restaurant 3) the food overall wasn't that good / maybe I'm just not super into Dutch food. 4) service was quite slow 5) maybe was a bit overpriced for what it was I would not actually recommend this place. Small restaurant serving traditional Dutch food - get reservations to avoid waiting!! Got the following: Bitterballen: 4 stars, piping hot and full of flavor. Could make a meal out of these. Enjoyed the pairing with whole grain mustard Oven bake with ground meat and cauliflower: 3 stars, tasty, but unremarkable. Needed salt. I stole some braised cabbage from my husband and that made it taste a lot better Beef stew: 3 stars, came with mashed potatoes and braised cabbage. The cabbage was 5 stars. The rest again was tasty but unremarkable, and needed some punch The dessert was the best: 5 stars. White chocolate mousse and chocolate ice cream, in addition to a little eggnog custard and fresh whipped cream. Delicious read more

Super busy and the place is small, so call and make reservations. Great wine and beer menu. They have set menus for food that include appetizer, main dish, and desert or you can order traditionally from the menu. Bitterballen was great Pea-soup w/sausage was ok Combination with meatball: the meatball was ok and the hutspot was great Savory beef & onion stew was more on the sweet side, mashed potatoes were great Vlaflip was very good, sweet from the custard and sour from the yogurt All great but we were seated outside in the cold because we didn't make reservations. So make sure to sit inside where it's a bit tight for us bigger people. Even though they get busy the servers here are very nice and accommodating. read more

i had the salmon filet & also the vegetarian oven baked dish stamppot that had leeks, potatoes, & amsterdam cheese. both were extremely delicious and well flavored. i also had vegetarian bitterballen with mustard but i'm not a big fan of it, but was good combined with the stamppot! the service is excellent and the restaurant is quaint and cute. read more
Good service, ambiance, food presentation. I think it's a solid place to try traditional Dutch food, just my taste buds aren't impressed by most European fare. They have preset menu choices which is nice. From menu 1, my favorite was the pea soup with sausage. The stamppot (sausage over different mashed potatoes) was just ok to me, several reviews laud the sauerkraut mash, and if you love sauerkraut you'll probably quite like it (alas, not a fan here). Dessert was a light yogurt/custard. One of my friends tried menu 2 which featured croquettes, something resembling shepherd's pie, and poffertjes (mini pancakes). All decent, and very good portion sizes (none of us were able to finish everything), and I'd say definitely worth a visit if you're on vacation and want to sample Dutch food. read more

The host, Bas is just amazing!! Friendly, efficient, and in perpetual motion. Whatever the owner pays him is not enough. And the food? Just sensational. Traditional Dutch comfort food - sausages, mashed potatoes, the most delicious red cabbage prepared with wine and brown sugar. WOW!! This place is tiny and packed to the gills. We literally had to hold our breath and squeeze in to our seats. The food is traditional and filling--huge savory meat balls, sausages, and different potato mash with either kale, sauerkraut, or carrots and beef. You can even get a plate where you sample all three (around 13 euros). They also have a prix fixe menu, too, starting at 19 euros, that includes soup and a dessert. The pea soup is also good and comes with rye bread and "bacon"--which is more of a thick raw-ish looking ham. We ordered the salad with walnuts, pear, and goat cheese and it was great. For dessert they serve a yogurt parfait with honey that we did not try, but seemed to be very popular. We had the plate of quarter-sized tender pancakes dusted with powered sugar and they were a good way to end the meal. Service was curt but friendly. read more

Stopped by at this place after the museum. This place was on my list for quite some time and finally got a chance to try it on a rainy day. This place rated very high. It lived up to its reputation. The beef stew was very tender w a lots of flavor. read more

I went to the Panty off of the recommendations of three friends who had been here before. They raved about this place and told me how much they loved it so I had to give it a try. We went kinda late and it was before closing time that we arrived. Thankfully we were seated and had a great meal at this place! The food is fresh and they cook the food super fresh for you. I had the Goulash, and tasted sausage and also had a trio of meats. Everything tasted great. The best thing is the owner who was also a waiter told us how this place started and how it is a big family here. I would for sure go back to this place and try more on the menu! It is very Holland inside and the food is tradition Holland fare! I highly recommend this place! read more

Arrived a bit early 10 mins prior to reservation time and we were told that our table wasn't ready yet, and that the prior guests were "just finishing up". Unfortunately there is no area inside to wait, and we had to wait outside. By about 10-15 mins after reservation time, we were finally able to come in and be seated. The restaurant is quite small and very crowded. The tables are incredibly tight, and with a group of 6 it was nearly impossible to get in without having to get others to shift around. Once we were all seated, menus were distributed and drink orders taken. The place was very busy (ie: all tables full) and there were 2 servers. The servers were very busy and if we wanted something we definitely had to flag our server. Food was ordered and despite the full place, the food was on the table in short order. I had ordered the Typical Dutch Ham, and my wife ordered the Hutspot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball (she went with the meatball). The Hutspot is served with mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions - which it like a mashed potato with stuff mixed into it. The Typical Dutch Ham is basically a Ham Hock, that is cooked to perfection. The Ham falls away from the hock, and is juicy and tender. The mustard that comes with it a honey mustard with a nice amount of heat to it. My wife's Hutspot was delicious as well. Neither one of us could finish our meals as the serving sizes were huge. Overall, I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, and maybe on a quieter night it would have been. Having to wait for a reservation that was made just makes me crazy. Our servers seemed far too busy to be friendly, or to offer up better service. With the restaurant being full it was also very loud and with everyone crowded in, it was anything but cozy or intimate. The food here is fabulous and there is no doubt about that. I would definitely go back, but preferably on a night that is less busy, or in time where it's not completely packed. read more
Wife and I stopped in here for some traditional Dutch cuisine! The bittaballen was fantastic, its like Swedish meatball gravy thickened enough that it can be rolled into a ball, breaded and fried... WOW! SO good. The strong mustard that comes along with them is vinegary and that cuts through the fattiness that allows you to taste the full array of flavors. Stunning. We also split the traditional fish plate and sausage plate. You need to be an adventurous eater to truly enjoy the fish plate. We liked it, didn't love it but we're happy that we tried the specialties of the area. Good beer and food prices, helpful staff and awesome atmosphere. Highly reccomend. read more

If you want delicious traditional Dutch food with cute decor and friendly service, this is the spot! Thanks to yelp, we were able to locate our next food adventure. Of course in the Netherlands, you'll have to try Dutch food! We got the famous dish... Potatoes. The ménage à trois of mashed potatoes will offer you the most interesting flavor profile you can have - sauerkraut, kale and sweet potato/carrots/onions! All three tasted amazing with great flavors and the right amount of richness. Some mashed I had was way too buttery and it gets gross. Not this one. We also had the beef stew and goodness it was so tender and delicious! I cleaned my plate and so did he! It's also a great place to try some local Dutch beer! The only disappointing thing was the yogurt/parfait kind of dessert. It was a bit to melty and nasty. We didn't finish it. The decor was very cute with a lot of different lamps by the door and their famous Delftware on the wall. All the staff there were friendly too and were proud of what they served. Stumbled across this after visiting the Heineken tour in Amsterdam. For traditional Dutch food about a 10 min walk from brewery. Ate outside and came around 6 pm on Thursday night reservations needed bu managed to get in. I had set price 28 euro Shepard pie/ goat cheese Appetizer pancakes dessert. Delicious Dutch food! I found this place on yelp and told hubby to meet me there after the RAI conference. We were seated outside on the patio in an alley. I ordered their special which included one sausage and mashed potatoes prepared in 3 different ways. Everything was delicious. Hubby ordered steak with veggies. He enjoyed his dish. I ordered a split pea soup and my kids devoured it. The dessert yogurt dessert was yummy too. Service was efficient and friendly. They had a problem processing our credit card for some odd reason so we had to pay with cash. When we were leaving a family was looking at the menu and I told them that the food was fantastic so they quickly took a seat outside. However the waiter came and told them that all the seats were reserved already. Wow...good thing we came when we did! read more

Tip: WiFi pw is pantry1234. Loved it! My traditional Dutch dish of a sausage and three types of mashed potatoes was delicious. Even though the place was super busy on New Year and I had no reservation, they did their best to accommodate me and others in my situation, telling us we could have tables until X time when guests with reservations were due to arrive. There was also the option to sit outside. While I waited about ten minutes to be seated, they started to prepare my food so that I wouldn't feel rushed once my table was cleared. Very efficient. The staff was charming--engaging and friendly, all smiles. They were happy to chat lightly and to explain the cuisine. I noticed that, between them, they speak at least three languages, which is incredibly handy in the center of the city. I should emphasize that this place isn't swamped with tourists. I saw locals for sure. read more

Stopped by for a bite to eat after visiting the Rijksmuseum, and it was absolutely wonderful. Very cozy, lovely staff, and delicious food for a very fair price. The Hutspot with sausage was incredible, as was the rest of my family's meal. I highly recommend The Pantry, and I hope to visit again! read more
We had to try Dutch food while in Amsterdam so we stopped by The Pantry. We were unable to get seated on a Thursday evening so we made a reservation for two for Monday evening. The staff was very nice each time despite how busy they were. Now... Dutch food. Our tour guide mentioned that the Dutch are not necessarily known for their food and that everything was either mashed, boiled, or fried. I ordered the Hutspot (mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions) served with a smoked sausage or a meatball and my husband ordered the beef stew dish. The Hutspot was like a kielbasa with mashed potatoes. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but nothing amazing. Same applies for the beef stew - I feel like we whipped something similar in a crock pot one time. I suppose this is what it would be like if I stopped by a Dutch grandma's house and had dinner. The ambiance just felt cozy (or gezellig, if you will) and the seating was close together. Overall no complaints at all and would ultimately encourage others to experience Dutch cuisine this way. read more
This might have been my favorite meal in Amsterdam. From my research, it was one of the few places to have a true Dutch meal. Otherwise, I was finding lots of German and French food. For that reason alone, it's a must go to place. We ordered two traditional dishes. The first was hutspot, which is a mix of beef, potatoes, carrots, and onions. The second was a dutch beef stew. Both were excellent. Prices were reasonable (15 euros for the main courses and 5 euros for wine/beer). The atmosphere and service is wonderful. read more

Amsterdam isn't exactly a culinary wonderland but it has some local flavors you shouldn't miss. The Pantry serves up typical Dutch cuisine with some of the friendliest service you'll find in Amsterdam. I went for the zuurkoolstamppot which is Sauerkraut mixed into mashed potatoes with a sausage. Nothing exciting to look at but it was actually pretty delicious. If you're in Amsterdam I'd highly recommend making reservations and give the pantry a shot. read more
