Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. They take credit cards.
Authentic Dutch food at quite reasonable prices makes this spot hugely popular. How popular? Well, we came on a Tuesday night and everything was booked. Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. But there's comfortable, unpretentious, chill vibe here. Love the decorations inside and the staff is very pleasant. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. I think it must've been 80 proof. This is not a bad thing at all. Terrific dinner from terrific people. Definitely recommend.
SERVICE: The service was great! Of note, if there's a wait (and you don't have a reservation) you have to stay outside the front of the restaurant the whole time, you cannot walk around anywhere even if your wait is expected to be 40mins. Friendly host and servers! Patient, kind, and efficient. FOOD: Dutch food. Variety of fish and meat dishes. I had cabbage, beef stew, and mashed potatoes Their bitterballen was very good! I tried some of my friends. Limited drink options (cocktail wise), but can make a gin and seltzer or vodka seltzer. Many beer and wine options. Ambiance, cool eclectic decor inside however seating is very close/tight and tables are only a few inches from one another so don't come with large bags or expect to have space to move around once you've sat down.
Very tiny restaurant like most restaurants in this area. Space is very tight and you're very close to the next tables. In and out is not easy but they make do. We tried menu #1 and the pork chop. On the menu #1: pea soup 4/5; yummy. The meat on the side is ok but the soup is flavorful. The meat ball with the different mash potato is ok 3.5/5. The desert at the end is just yogurt, 2/5. The pork chop is good. 4/5. Not dry. Tasty. Alfa beer: the least I like out of all beer I've tried so far in Amsterdam. 2/5.
The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. My dish was a meat ball and mash potatoes, it was delicious. The portion was so large I had 2 meals! Service was amazing, super funny and warming. We went at 5pm for a table with no reservation. We don't normally eat dinner than early but had to make sure we got a seat here! Would definitely come back. oh and this is our first time trying traditional Dutch cuisine!
Very charm and tiny restaurant that serves traditional Dutch food. It was crowded during lunch time, but the servers are all attentive, fluent in English and get us seated within a reasonable wait time. My party ordered a combination of 3 Dutch sausages. It tastes fine. I love the pea soup, the ham and the caramel waffle with ice cream. My overall dining experience here was awesome. I will recommend this restaurant to people who want to try traditional Dutch food.
This lovely restaurant lives up to all the positive reviews. Such a cute and inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and warm friendly service as well. The ham dish was actually a wonderfully cooked pork knuckle that was sublime. Several also ordered the set menus and they were all delicious. Given our short amount of time, we couldn't make it to a herring stand, so to let our nephews try salted/picked herring for the first time, we ordered it here. To my delight, they were every bit as good as getting them from the stands. We all enjoyed them immensely.
In all my visits to Amsterdam (and there have been plenty in the last three years), I never went out of my way to try authentic Dutch food. Well, The Pantry is the Amsterdam institution for Dutch food, so I made my way over here after making a reservation. And DEFINITELY make a reservation...saw plenty of people get rejected at the door. Ordered the Bitterballen (because of course you must order Bitterballen if you are getting Dutch food) and Salted Herring with Onions and Pickles as appetizers. Of course I have at least had Bitterballen before and this was definitely very solid. The mustard that it came with was perfect for it. It was also the first time that I have tried pickled herring. And I actually liked it a lot! Had great taste. The chopped onions it came with added some bite to it. For entrées, we ordered the Bloemkoolstamppot (Mashed Potatoes Mixed with Cauliflower) served with a Smoked Sausage as well as the Savory Beef and Onion Stew (with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes). Both were excellent! Just felt like I was at home eating some very nice homemade food. Hit the spot! Staff here were super friendly. Made some great suggestions as to what we should order. The ambience in here makes you feel like you're actually in a home. Very warm and cozy with the tables close together. Don't know why I've been denying myself on Dutch food for so long because it's pretty damn good. Need to come back!
I wanted to try "Amsterdam(Netherland) traditional meal", so I checked here. This place is very famous especially for the tourist (of course, there are local customers too) so highly recommended to make a reservation. Luckily I and my husband made it without reservation but waited for about hour. It's cozy restaurant and was super crowded but servere(especially a woman) was super nice. If you visit first time, recommend to order their course. They have five kinds of course that can enjoy the Netherland's meals. I chose Menu 1(Dutch Delight menu) and my husband chose Menu 2(Grandmothers kitchen menu). Menu 1 comes with Pea-Soup with rye bread and smoked bacon, Combination of Hutspot, zuurkool-en boerenkoolstamppot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball, Vlaflip (vanilla custard with yoghurt and syrup). Menu 2 comes with Dutch goat cheese croquettes (3), Oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, curry onions and mashed potatoes, Poffertjes (Mini pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar). All food was so good and we really enjoyed Netherland's meal dinner.
This place is very small so you absolutely need reservations. We tried 1-week out and only got lunch availability which was fine for our day. Some came by and sadly were turned away as there was no chance of getting in. Service was very welcoming and friendly. This place is so busy that you're packed in pretty tightly. Food was very tasty traditional Dutch offerings which is exactly what we wanted for our lunch. Filling and good. Don't forget to reserve your lunch or dinner if you want to eat here, and try 2-weeks out if possible. Enjoy!
So amazing!! Staff is so amazingly friendly! We were lucky and got an outdoor table fairly quickly. I got the oven dish and the bf got the combination. Both dishes were simply amazing! We got the vlaflip, which consists of yogurt, custard, and syrup, and it was interestingly delicious. It does tend to get busy and the inside was very tightly packed, but so worth the wait to get some traditional food! read more

What a great find! Amazing service. Unfussy, super tasty local flavors presented simply and expertly. Homey atmosphere with eclectic decor. Highly recommend the menu pre-fixe options -- super great value with a starter, main and dessert. Should be 1 star but friendly service 2 stars. Food here is atrocious, the worst restaurant I've had in Amsterdam by a LONG SHOT. Any menu with multiple languages is likely horrendous. Against intuition, i came anyhow wanting "local dutch" Large portions, fried, low quality ingredients. Go elsewhere. It's also not cheap. THE FOOD: - bread: not good, crusty, or homemade - fish platter: smoked eel, tiny shrimp and herring. Herring almost made me throw up lol texture was awful - goat cheese salad: couldn't eat, goat cheese was too strong - sea bass: weirdly textured, served with buttered boiled (frozen?) vegetables - mashed potatoes: microwaved? Hard on the outside, soft on the inside - mini pancakes: highlight of the meal. Only thing I really ate TLDR: do not come here! Unless you only come for pancakes. Lolll read more

Dear Craig, What a gem! If you're looking for an authentic meal from Amsterdam this is the place to go. You better be hungry too because the portions are large. We started with soup. The Tomato soup was great, not creamy which is the way I like it. After trying the split Pea soup, there is no question. You've got to get the split pea soup. Flavors were string and delicious. The soup comes with a strange yet tasty bread, deli meat and spicy mustard The cheese fondue had a beer flavor to it that was unique. Must try. For the main meal we had sausage and sauerkraut. The sauerkraut was mixed with potato...I think and was amazing. I would like to go back and try the meatball instead of the sausage next time. The sausage was a link and not my favorite. This is a gem of a little restaurant in the heart of Amsterdam, not far from the Rijks Museum. They serve traditional Dutch cuisine. We went for a late lunch at about 2:30pm with no reservation and scored the last 2-top outside on October 26 (to note: they don't take lunch reservations, but they do take dinner reservations - highly recommend reserving a table for dinner). We began our meal with two hot starters: Bitterballen (beef croquettes - 6 for 5.95€) and the Dutch shrimp croquettes (3 for 7.75€). Both were served piping-hot and very tasty! For our entrees, we each tried the combination: hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot and zuurkoolstamppot (14.75 €). The combo comes with a choice of a sausage or a meatball - we tried one of each and split them. What are these items, you ask? Hutspot is mashed potatoes with stew meat, carrots and onions; boerenkoolstamppot is mashed potatoes and kale; and, finally, zuurkoolstamppot is mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. I favored the hutspot and sausage; my man favored the zuurkoolstamppot. It was a great way to sample it all. And, did it take a few minutes to get our food? Yes. However, it is homemade, not mass-produced...slow down and enjoy the people watching and conversations! Sadly, we were too full for dessert or even coffee... Next time, I want to try their fondue - it is an individual pot of traditional fondue, served with bread and veggies for dipping and a small salad. Our server, missed his name, was quite impressive. He switched from Dutch to French to English without batting an eye. He also explained the dishes and seemed to truly take pride in his work and the food. He also gave some Dutch tourists directions and recommendations for other places to visit. Perhaps he is the owner? Two thumbs up all the way. The ladies room - very, VERY clean. There are a lot of choices to eat around here. Across the street is Italian that boasts "it's simply the best" and the place outside with a rowdy table has Dutch mussels and fries for 10 euros. So, why come here? Well, Yelp says it's good Dutch traditional food. It looks cute inside, may be 1930s style with porcelain plates and tassled fake candelabras on the wall, despite it only being open since 2000. As with all traditional restaurants, The Pantry does a bustling tourist trade. Is that good or bad? Neither. Everyone's having fun, and they welcome lone diners like me. In fact I even lucked out and got a window table on a pleasant late summer night ( no rain, 60F). If you don't might the occasional waft of cigarettes coming into your meal it's a nice spot. I ordered combo of hutspot (mashed potato with beef and veg) boerenkoolstamppot (mashed potato, kale and bacon) and zuurkoolstamppot (mashed potato with sauerkraut). It was tasty, although a bit salty, esp the bacon dish. I got the yogurt and custard dessert which was as it sounded. An odd combo, but tasty. You're supposed to mix it together, but I ate it separately. All, in all a nicer dining experience than the other places in this area. The host / server was really friendly and humorous. The place as packed. I tried another Dutch restaurant in another part of town and it was better, but more expensive. read more

We had an enjoyable dinner at The Pantry on our first evening in Amsterdam. We wanted to visit at least one restaurant serving authentic Dutch food on our trip, and I am glad we chose The Pantry. The food was delicious, the ambiance was cute and cozy, and the service was great. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation in advance! The Pantry has a great prix-fixe menu available, where you can select from four cost-levels, each including a starter, a main course, and a dessert. We selected several things to share off the extensive menu, ordering ala carte, as we were looking to try as much as possible. The beer and wine list was really nice; we selected two local beers and started off with the bitterballen and the Combination of Fish, which was smoked eel, Dutch shrimps, and salted herring. The smoked eel was by far my favorite of the three, but they were all tasty and cool to try. The bitterballen was delicious as well. We split an order of the Combination of hutspot boerenkoolstamppot and zuurkoolstamppot and requested the smoked sausage and the meatball. Each of the hutspots were nice and unique, however the one which appeared to be sauerkraut was my favorite and was fantastic with the smoked sausage. The dish was hearty and filling - 100% comfort food. This dish was large enough for us to share with both the sausage and meatball, in addition to the appetizers we chose. We ended up too full for dessert. If you're visiting Amsterdam, go out of your way to try more traditional Dutch food. The Pantry was a great option for this, and I would especially recommend it to anyone visiting The Netherlands for the first time. read more

It is not easy to find a traditional dutch food restaurant in the netherlands. But, i now found it. The restaurant prepares the food i ate while growing up. While surrounded by a kitsch amount of dutch painting and delft plue tile and dutch music on the radio, i enjoyed a steak. Hostsare friendly, and prices are ok. Definitely will take some visiting overseas friends here. read more

Our hotel's concierge recommended this place to us and after walking for a lot longer than we expected, we were EXTREMELY pleasantly surprised with the place. It's not huge but we were able to get a table really quickly. The servers were attentive and very nice. While we were ordering, my wife and I each ordered one of the specials, and when I asked if that was too much food the waitress told us while she'd love to sell us a ton of stuff, what we ordered really was too much...so we scaled back the order and had the perfect amount of food. The soup we started with was great, and the croquettes were amazing - crispy on the outside and incredibly flavorful throughout. The main course was a variety of three types of potatoes and an enormous and really delicious meatball. We were told before going that there weren't that many traditional Dutch restaurants like this left that focused on what I guess would be Dutch 'soul food' or food one's grandmother would have made, and our server mentioned something similar while we were there, too. I'm really glad we stopped in to try the traditional food first and I'm extra glad The Pantry is still doing what they're doing because they're doing a great job. read more
One of my favorite places in Amsterdam! Make a reservation or you will be waiting quite a bit for a table. The restaurant is small and crowded but it only adds to the character and ambiance of the place. Ask for their favorite dishes and try something new! Very tasty food, reasonable price and good service. We ordered both the shrimp croquettes and the goat cheese croquettes. Of the two - I would recommend the cheese croquettes, note there are only 3 per order 6,75 -7,50 per order. I opted for the sea bass at 18,95 and the portions were huge, two huge filets of sea bass - perfectly cooked and well seasoned. My partner opted for the chicken satay which was good - the sauce was similar to the peanut sauce you might get with summer rolls at a typical Vietnamese/pho establishment. My girlfriend found this place on Yelp while we were walking around the freezing city and had no idea what we were having for our early dinner. Thankful that she did! It was our first delicious meal in Amsterdam and one that I will not forget. The Dutch steak was extremely delicious as well as the chicken satay entree that I ordered. My dad asked for a local beer and they brought out La Trappe Dubbel and Tripel. We preferred the Dubbel, it is really delicious and nutty! It is also darker than the Tripel, which kinda threw me off, but tastier nonetheless. read more

Stoped in just to see if we could get a table, they were very accomidating and the wait was small. The food was extreemly good the bitterballen was fantastic. As I am not from the area I wanted to try lots of different thing and the Combination plate was had a little of all of their main dishes, it is a must try. I lucked out and got a reservation for 6:30. We arrived at 6:15 and we were seated. The menus came and we ordered a Dutch wine and a aperol spritzer. The soup was out of this world. Thick, rich, a few pieces of sausage. Yum The ham sandwich was different a bit fatty but the mustard was the bomb. The croquettes were rich, creamy and I would definitely recommend it. We were enjoying our appetizers when all the lights and fan went out. Next was a happy birthday song and the whole restaurant sang. Special meal 1included a meatball with 3 different kinds of mashed potatoes. One with carrots, one scoop with sauerkraut and the other with kale. Great stuff. The wife had meal # 2, cauliflower and a ground steak some cheese and a seasoning that is like cumin, who knows it was delicious . They were both great. This place is legit real Dutch food. The specials came with dessert. Pancakes for dessert are you nuts, but it was sweet like a donut. I had the custard, I didn't like but my wife really enjoyed it. Who knew. I ate her mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar. Bottom line, come but make a reservation. The line at 7:30 was long. The price in 2022 for special 1 was 22.50 and special 2 was 26.50 read more

First meal in Amsterdam. Reservations at 11:30am. Arrived on time, seated right away at this warm and cozy country-style restaurant with wooden furniture and furnishings. Quick delivery of orders. Both the Smoked Eel on Toasts and Herring on toasts were fresh and delicious. The Cauliflower/Potato/Ground Beef/Cheese Casserole was flavorful and filling. Poffertjes were pillowy soft and just yummy little pancakes. Also tried a few slices of the sausage from a friend's plate and that was juicy. Will definitely want to eat here again. Service was really fast. We were seated at the inner most section of the restaurant with my back facing the entrance. Was completely surprised by the number of diners when we were leaving and the long line of customers eagerly waiting for their turn to get seated and fed. read more
I was visiting Amsterdam for a few days with family and we were looking for quality, traditional Dutch food. I'm so glad we found the Pantry. The first night we came, they were fully booked, so we made a reservation for the following evening. Definitely make a rezzo if you're going for weekend dinner! We ordered all the classics: the shrimp croquettes, split pea soup, Dutch sausages combo with bread, and the sausage with 3 types of mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious and well prepared. A few of the Dutch sausages were unique tasting--I think one was liver? And the shrimp croquettes were on the smaller side, but that's nitpicking. We also ordered the seabass fillet, which was good, but not quite on the same level as the other dishes. Maybe should have gone for the Dutch steak instead. The atmosphere is very cozy inside, tables are quite close together but not uncomfortable. Service is very friendly, all the waiters speak English and provide English menus. Customers appeared to be a good mix of locals and tourists, so you know it's not a tourist trap! Would definitely recommend this place for dinner to anyone visiting Amsterdam looking for authentic Dutch food. read more

A visit to The Pantry was a must for us on our first day back in Amsterdam. With an impressively no-frills name and a quaint environment, we were happy to see it serve some delicious Dutch food while having all-around great service. We came in a little after they had just opened up for the day and an array of lunch specials were presented to us. While our main objective coming here was to try their Hutspot, we decided their €21 set which included pea-soup and a custard dessert would be more appropriate. Thank goodness too because everything was tasty and splendid. The pea-soup with rye bread and smoked ham was one of the best I had tasted in a lifetime. It was thick and not overly salty when it comes to pea soup, and their homemade rye was a great accompaniment. The main dish came with their signature hutspot along with two other mashes accompanying either a smoked sausage or meatball. Since there were two of us, we each got a separate meat so we were able to try both. Personally, the meatball was my winner, which is funny because we both enjoyed each other's meats better (lol). All in all, it was fantastic to taste the different mashed potato concoctions on the side- my favorite being the one mixed in with kale. Our vanilla yoghurt with custard was simply divine and a great way to end our meal. Dare I say it- I liked this portion the best out of everything we tried during our lunch set! I was very impressed with the service and food quality here at The Pantry and would absolutely recommend it for everyone to try visiting Amsterdam. read more
Wow, this place is just so real and authentic. Really great Dutch food, felt like I was eating at my Dutch grandmother's house. As K and I were here on a chilly winter night, this was perfect! Here's what we got: Cold starter: combination of 3 Dutch sausages. These were great, real local sausages. Yum. Combination of hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot and zuurkoolstamppot (served with a smoked sausage or a meatball): oh god, this was just amazing. Just get it. It's rich, complex, and crazy filling. I could eat my weight in this dish. Savoury beef and onion stew (with red cabbage and mashed potatoes): k loves stews. She's Irish. As stews go, this was great, but you gotta dig on stew. Super authentic and tasty if this is your deal, so can't knock it. I loved the staff here, too. So nice. I'd come back here in a heartbeat. They are busy so I'd recommend calling ahead for a reservation! read more

The Pantry is a great traditional little Dutch restaurant. My boyfriend and I walked in around 7PM and were seated quickly (if you have a party bigger than two, you should probably make a reservation). The place is dimly lit, small, but very cozy and bustling. I got a hutspot dish which is mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions and served with a smoked sausage. My boyfriend ordered "Menu 1" which is a full course meal: appetizer - pea soup with rye bread and smoked bacon, entree - a combination of hutspot, zuurkoolstamppot (mash potatoes with sauerkraut), boerenkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes with kale) served with a smoked sausage or a meatball, and dessert - vanilla custard with yogurt and syrup. I'm not a fan of heavy food, but I really enjoyed the hutspot and the boerenkoolstamppot, but not so much the sauerkraut one. I also am generally indifferent about sausage and would not care for a large sausage as I had here. It was so good - the smokiness really made it great and tastes nothing like the hot dog flavor that I was scared to get. We also ordered the apple pie because hey, Dutch dessert! It was a really interesting texture, crunchy on the top, unlike the famous apple pie from Winkel 43, but nonetheless delicious and I enjoyed it much more than any apple pie that I have had in the States! The vanilla custard with yogurt dessert was rather disappointing though because it literally tasted like... cup yogurt from the supermarket and the syrup was really fake tasting. Overall a satisfying experience with attentive service. read more

We were visiting Amsterdam and wanted to have an authentic Dutch dinner. The Pantry didn't disappoint! This is the ultimate comfort food! We started with the Shrimp Croquettes which we really didn't need as the entree portions are more than enough. We decided to split the Dutch Ham (a visual as well as culinary experience and be warned-huge!) and the combo Hutspot (mashed potatoes) with sausage and added meatball was excellent! We had the La Trappe Quadrupel Ale which is a Dutch (Belgian style) Ale & was very good. The Pantry is charming, cozy & small (& they do get busy) so reservations are highly recommended (especially if planning on going during peak times). Service was also excellent! read more

Excellent place for lunch! I came by 12:30ish and there was no one here so I got a bit worried (no people usually = bad food), but by the time I was leaving, this place was completely full. I had... sausage with three kinds of potatoes - i forget the exact name. I also had Trappist dubbel(?), which was perfect with the meal. You could pay a little less and just get a sausage with one kind of potato, but i wanted to try all three. One is a kale mix, another is beef/carrot mix, and another seemed like pork mix. My favorite was the beef/carrot mix. And i know one sausage doesn't sound like a lot... but i was struggling to finish this dish. I love the interior of this place - the dimmed lights and candles plus the wall plate decorations is beautiful. I would definitely recommend this place and go again! read more
