I LOVED this place. I shared the Stampot (with sausage), meat appetizer and the cauliflower hot dish (with curried beef and vegetables). They were all good and a real great taste of Dutch cuisine. They were very welcoming but could only take a reservation for a max of 6 people because of the small size of the restaurant. They must have picked up on our conversation about my birthday and brought out an order of poffertjes with a sparkler and sang to me! The Pantry definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam! We stopped in after a visit to the neighboring Rijksmuseum, making sure to set up a reservation the day before. And we were glad we did! The interior is small and narrow, so the reservation ended up being necessary when we noticed how many people were either waiting outside or even turned away. The menu is arranged in the form of course combinations, which, although it may not fit everyone, made it easy to order and try quite a few local dishes all at once. I went with the sausage, stew, and chocolate duo courses, which, at only 27 euros, was well worth it! Everyone was delicious and, being on the heavier side, filled you up. Honestly, when you're traveling in a foreign country and you find a place that makes ordering dinner easier, you take it! The staff were also very friendly and happy to work with English speakers. Had to go smash on authentic Dutch and the the verdict is: Zuurkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes w/sauerkraut) and sausage- I'm big on sauerkraut so I enjoyed this dish a lot. The sausage was good and had the "snap" that a wiener should, pause. Oven dish w/cauliflower- packed with ground beef, old Amsterdam cheese, and curry onions in the mashed potatoes. Cold Starter (combination of 3 Dutch sausages w/bread)- comes with pâté, ox sausage, and boiled pork. This was enjoyable, flavors balanced well with the mustard and pickles. It's been almost 2 weeks since I ate here, and this place is still on my mind! My brother and I were visiting Amsterdam for the first time, and wanted to try some traditional Dutch food. As a picky eater, I have to say I was quite nervous... I'd had absolutely zero experience or knowledge of Dutch food, and was still pretty much clueless when looking at the menu. I informed our server of this, and feeling a bit uncomfortable... but also adventurous, I asked for a recommendation. He told me to get Menu 1 (with sausage instead of a meatball-- he stressed this lol), because it was one of their most traditional meals and it'd allow me to get a good sense of Dutch food. I was not disappointed, AT ALL! The food was truly amazing! Even the pea soup! I'm a bit of a foodie and I was genuinely in awe lol. The portions were normal compared to American dishes, but most likely considered fairly large in other places, which is probably why I got a crazy look from the lady sitting at the table next to me when I ordered a second dessert lol. The restaurant is very small and very busy. Without a reservation, you'll likely have to wait in a line outside. Luckily for us, it seemed like it was easier for smaller groups to get a table. My husband and I ended up dining here twice during our trip to Amsterdam! We made reservations (via email) in advance and had no problems once we arrived. As the restaurant is small, I would definitely recommend making a reservation 1-2 weeks in advance for your party. They do have some open tables (if you're lucky!) but it is definitely a popular spot among tourists and visitors. I love the intimate and cozy ambiance here- and the food was great! We ordered the Bitterballen and pea soup and for entrees, the Combo with Meatball (and three different kinds of mash potatoes) and the Beef Stew. All dishes were comforting, hearty and delicious. Prices here were also reasonable and you the portions are large! They take credit card as well. The staff here who helped us were also friendly, inviting and welcoming. Great restaurant in old town amsterdam to try local Dutch food. Yes, the target market is touristy, but it works. We tried the Bitterballs, and would recommend them. We visited The Pantry on our first night in Amsterdam. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would highly recommend it to those looking for a unique, tasty, and relatively cheap dinner! Locale: Warm, inviting, and intimate. Despite visiting on a Monday night, the restaurant was packed--be sure to make a reservation beforehand. Service: Incredibly welcoming, friendly, and attentive. I was even pleasantly surprised when, as I left the restaurant, our server told me to button up my jacket to keep warm. Food: For the most part, wonderful! Three of us ordered Menu 1, a pre-selected three course offering. The pea soup was tasty, warm, and hearty--perfect given the weather! I was not personally enamored with rye bread accompanying the soup (the texture and consistency were odd), but my friends and I could agree the bread paired very well with the smoked bacon and spicy mustard the restaurant placed alongside. The main course, meanwhile, was excellent! While the sausage was good, the real standouts were the three mashed potato dishes. My personal favorite was the zuurkoolstamppot (sauerkraut), although two of my friends preferred the hutspot (carrots and onions). I liked the boerenkoolstamppot (kale) more than the zuurkool, but only because it was topped with small bacon cubes that heightened the dish's overall flavor. I was able to sample a bit of a third friend's savory beef and onion stew. I found the stew a bit too sweet for my liking (although, admittedly, I only took one bite). The red cabbage was delicious--we really enjoyed the vinegar and brown sugar sauce in which it sat. For dessert, we had the mini pancakes, the vlaflip, and the chocolate mousse. The mini pancakes were moist and rich but could have been a bit sweeter. I personally found the vlaflip (a vanilla custard) to be slightly bland. Came here for dinner our first night in Amsterdam. Pea Soup was incredible- it had a perfect ratio of pea and meat so the flavor was enhanced but not overwhelmed by the meat. Autentic Dutch experience and food. While in Amsterdam we decided we have to try local food that is not French fries with some sauce on it. The pantry is a lovely little place hidden between the narrow streets of the ring tunnels. The restaurant is decorated with one bold saying: Dutch tradition. The menu- what I loved about their menu is that they put together different combinations that will let you try the local food and enjoy full meal. And the best,they have very multi language menu! We ordered bottle of wine, their amazing local meat filled balls, huge meat ball and mix of their local mushed potatoes. The food- the balls were amazing, the mushed potatoes wasn't bad but not my favorite type of food. Prices are reasonable. The service- 2 waitresses for a full small restuarnt, it took a little long to order, but the food came out fast. One of the waitresses was a little too pushy, or it washer first day and she didn't know the size of their dishes and just told us it wasn't enough (it definitely was) Bottom line, if you like Dutch food you most likly have a new favorite! Almost five stars here. Authentic dutch food worth a' visit at least once. When in the Netherlands for just a weekend, you probably will want authentic Dutch food. It is more German than French, with lots of meat and potatoes, but this is a place that is great to go to once or twice to get one of the well priced, extremely filling, pretty darn delicious pre fixed meals. For a minute you will forget that you are in Amsterdam and think you are at some chain restaurant in a major American city. It is filled with (mostly American) tourists. The food, however, is good. Traditional Dutch fare with good service. A lot of meat and potatoes. The different combos of mashed potatoes - with sauerkraut, kale, stewed beef - are delicious. If you want to try all the different types of mashed potatoes go for the combination of hutspot, boerenkool and zuurkoolstamppot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball. I opted for the smoked sausage and it was a perfect addition. Portion sizes are big and all that starch and meat will fill you up fast. Get a Dutch Trappist ale to go with your meal. They have set menus as well. Menu 1 seems quite popular with the crowd...I overheard many people ordering it. Prices are reasonable and service is spot on. Free wifi is a bonus and they take credit cards. In typical European style, seating is very compact, and when you add obese Americans to the small space it looks like a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, the person behind me couldn't get out of his chair until I got up and let him out. Get yourself some good traditional Dutch fare amidst a sea of tourists...and then complain that there are too many tourists in the restaurant :-) read more

If you're travelling to Amsterdam and want a taste of traditional Dutch food, but with the OPTION of bailing out and having something a little more universal, you should rock up at The Pantry. It's easy to miss as it's tucked down some side street right in the centre of the city. Don't give up. The food is definitely worth the appetite that you'll build up trying to find it. This is the only place that I visited twice for lunch during my recent stay. The first time, I wasn't really feeling ambitious enough to try some traditional Dutch food, so I opted for smoked sausage and a green tea. I realise that this is probably an odd combination, but it demonstrates there is something for everyone. Not too hungry? Grab a sausage with a lil mustard and you'll be set for a solid 5 hours before you need to eat again. If you're feeling particularly peckish and want to dive right into Dutch cuisine, you've got to go for the hutspot, boerenkool- and zuurkoolstamppot combo served with a smoked sausage or a meatball. I have no idea what is in these foods. It's kind of like a mashed potato medley, shaped like scoops of ice cream, but hot and a little sour, savoury and erm... not all potato. It's all in gravy. To top it off, you get a smoked sausage or a meteor sized meatball. It's quite a tough dish to finish as the food is very rich. As you look around the room, you will see plenty of people giving themselves little "food breaks". You will WANT to finish everything on your plate so that you don't have any hunger regrets later in the night. It is that, damn, good. You will not want to eat for a good 12 hours or so after eating this dish. There are a few reasons I couldn't give The Pantry give stars: - It took us a while to get served - probably 20 mins before our orders were taken and then another 10-15 before we were served our food. - The chairs are a little uncomfortable and there's not a lot of room if you're sat at the tables just in front of the doorway. Also, a quick note. You can't split your bill here. Whilst we were eating, a group of American tourists wanted to split their bill. The waiter made is clear that they don't split bills at The Pantry (and lots of other places in the Netherlands). Things got really weird. When I go back to Amsterdam, I look forward to going back a third time. Perhaps I will try some more traditional food. But if not, I always know there is a pot of hot tea and a smoked sausage waiting for me. And that's just fine. read more

To be frank, I know nuts about Dutch Food and as usual we hit on the usual order by choosing the Pre-Set Menu, one each. They were soothing as we adjusted ourselves in the warmly heated up environment. We spreaded the paste on the bread added with pickles. Well ~ what's the best / proper way to enjoy them? Combination of Three Dutch Sausages, Served with Bread, Pickles and Mustard Main Pairing of Beef with onion stew was perfect for the night. The main was delighting with its tender cubes of beef. Together with sides like the shredded red cabbages and mashed potatoes, even though the portion may look small but it actually got us filled up easily. Savoury Beef and Onion Stew with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potato Dessert Ending the meal with a square-cut size brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and generous portion of whipped cream, adorn with the zig zag patterns from the cherry sauce. Moreover as an Asian who had never experienced Dutch Food, I'm very glad that my choice of dinner was wisely chosen. The Pantry was a great find in Amsterdam. It was recommended to me by a friend and it didn't disappoint. When we got there, there was a a short wait but we were seated in 15 minutes. We started with some bitterballen, which was hot and delicious. My husband ordered the oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, onions and mashed potato and I got the combination hutsput with smoked sausage. Both were so good, we licked our plates clean. Although this spot has become somewhat touristy, it's worth a visit for some good local food. The staff was very friendly, spoke good English and the service was prompt. Before leaving Amsterdam, I wanted to try some traditional dutch food and The Pantry came up high on the list of restaurants to check out. We stopped in mid-afternoon (probably around 3 PM), hoping for a quick meal since we had to go back to our hotel on the other side of the city to grab our bags before heading to the train station. Luckily, there were only a few other patrons since we stopped in at such a random time. We explained our time crunch to the waitress, and she was very understanding and helpful. She recommended menu items that would come out more quickly and did her best to get us everything we needed as fast as she could. We really appreciated this, especially knowing that dining at a restaurant in Europe is usually a much more leisurely experience than it is in the US, where dining experiences are often rushed. The service here is really what made this a 5-star experience. The food was also delicious. I ordered the hutspot, which is mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions, and served with a large meatball (a smoked sausage was an option in place of the meatball). The meal was delicious and the epitome of comfort food. I really enjoyed it and wish I would've had the time to try more items from their menu. It's a good way to get exposure because this place is located down an obscure hidden alley. You have to walk past all the restaurant husslers surrounding Leidseplein Square before can you come across this little gem. A bunch of us were looking to try some traditional Dutch cuisine and that's exactly what we got from The Pantry one afternoon. All three of us ordered the combo plate which was a Dutch sausage served with hutspot, boerenkool, and zuurkoolstamppot. Everything was great, although if you ask me, all three sides kinda tasted the same. We also received stellar service from our waiter who was great in explaining the menu and making beer recommendations. From what I could make out, he understood at least three languages; Dutch, English, and Italian. I learned of the last one because he spoke it fluently to the Italian customers sitting next to us. I wouldn't be surprised if he knows more languages. All in all, The Pantry provided a great relaxing break during a busy day of sightseeing in Amsterdam. What it comes down to it is that I don't think the dishes were worth it. Each entree was priced at about 12€ and contained one piece of meat placed on top of three scoops of mashed potatoes.
