A great little place to eat. The place is full when we walked up but we were greeted promptly and offered a table. The menu offers set meals as well as open ordering. The pea soup is a must and the Hutspot with meatball was great. The service is great too, everyone is happy to help. The prices are about 25e per person and in this area that's a great deal. I highly recommend the pantry.
The Pantry serves authentic Dutch food in a cozy environment. Definitely get one of their prix-fixe menus. It includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert. If you are sharing a meal with someone, get items from a different prix-fixe menu and you can both try a variety of items. We enjoyed: * Charcuterie plate: sausages taste minimally processed and delicious * Beef and onion stew: taste slightly different than ones in America * Cauliflower and cheese oven bake: vegetarian's comfort food * Hutspot (mashed potatoes and carrots) and meatballs: non-vegetarian's comfort food * Pea soup with smoked ham For desserts, we had chocolate mousse and vlaflip (vanilla custard) and they were just okay. I'm not sure if desserts are the Dutch's strengths, except maybe the Dutch apple pie. They even bottle their own house beer. The restaurant is small. Try to make a reservation if you can. We didn't have a reservation, but went to the restaurant at around 5PM and were seated in about 15 minutes. At times, the line could get very long, but the staff is still welcoming and ensures that everyone gets served...eventually.
Hudspot was a good surprise Great pea soup too. The line was long but we were only two soon wo reservations we were seat in 30 minutes. Worth the wait. Not cheap for what's offered. Very busy and noisy and cramped. Do it
Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. They take credit cards.
Highly recommended! This is truly Amsterdam experience--a cozy restaurant that feels very Dutch. In a city with a lot of great restaurants, it is a stand out. You must be punctual. The reservations are in time blocks--so everyone enters together at the reservation time. It is orderly, not a mad rush, but they are serious about the reservation timing. We ordered Menu 3 (pictured) which was excellent for comfort food: --Trio of Dutch sausages, bread, Amsterdam pickles, and mustard --Hachee served with red cabbage and mashed potatoes --Chocolate duo with advocaat (chocolate mousse and ice cream) To get the reservation, we had to wait at our computer on the day the reservations open, then book immediately. It was hard reservation to get, but very much worth it.
Such a lovely little place! The service was so kind and the local Dutch cuisine was exactly what we were hoping for. We enjoyed everything that we ordered but I personally could not get enough of their split pea soup!
Authentic Dutch food at quite reasonable prices makes this spot hugely popular. How popular? Well, we came on a Tuesday night and everything was booked. Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. But there's comfortable, unpretentious, chill vibe here. Love the decorations inside and the staff is very pleasant. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. I think it must've been 80 proof. This is not a bad thing at all. Terrific dinner from terrific people. Definitely recommend.
SERVICE: The service was great! Of note, if there's a wait (and you don't have a reservation) you have to stay outside the front of the restaurant the whole time, you cannot walk around anywhere even if your wait is expected to be 40mins. Friendly host and servers! Patient, kind, and efficient. FOOD: Dutch food. Variety of fish and meat dishes. I had cabbage, beef stew, and mashed potatoes Their bitterballen was very good! I tried some of my friends. Limited drink options (cocktail wise), but can make a gin and seltzer or vodka seltzer. Many beer and wine options. Ambiance, cool eclectic decor inside however seating is very close/tight and tables are only a few inches from one another so don't come with large bags or expect to have space to move around once you've sat down.
Very tiny restaurant like most restaurants in this area. Space is very tight and you're very close to the next tables. In and out is not easy but they make do. We tried menu #1 and the pork chop. On the menu #1: pea soup 4/5; yummy. The meat on the side is ok but the soup is flavorful. The meat ball with the different mash potato is ok 3.5/5. The desert at the end is just yogurt, 2/5. The pork chop is good. 4/5. Not dry. Tasty. Alfa beer: the least I like out of all beer I've tried so far in Amsterdam. 2/5.
Excellent dinner--felt so cozy and homey. Even in the summer heat, this comfort food was amazing. Highly recommend the Oven Dish, Goat Cheese Croquettes, and Apple Pie.
The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. My dish was a meat ball and mash potatoes, it was delicious. The portion was so large I had 2 meals! Service was amazing, super funny and warming. We went at 5pm for a table with no reservation. We don't normally eat dinner than early but had to make sure we got a seat here! Would definitely come back. oh and this is our first time trying traditional Dutch cuisine!

We wanted an authentic Dutch meal and we definitely got it at The Pantry. Delicious food , great service. We got the sausage with different types of mashed potatoes & goat cheese croquets. Great beer too! Right in the hub of the city surrounded by tons of bars restaurants and nightlife. Definitely recommend if looking for authentic Dutch. read more

For our first night in Amsterdam, we wanted to find a traditional Dutch meal. We turned to TripAdvisor and Yelp and came across The Pantry. We decided to start with the beef carpaccio. Thin slices of beef were placed on a bed of argula and sprinkled with Old Amsterdam cheese and drizzled with a sherry truffle dressing. Delicious and a must order if you're a fan of the dish. For our entrees, we decided to choose off the traditional Dutch menu. I went with the Boerenkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes mixed with kale) served with the smoked sausage and sprinkled with pieces of fried pork. My friend decided to go with the Hutspot (mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions) served with the meatball. The mashed potatoes were okay, though the one mixed with the stewed beef and carrots was more flavorful. The sausage had a delicious smokey flavor to it and the giant meatball was tender. What it comes down to it is that I don't think the dishes were worth it. Each entree was priced at about 12€ and contained one piece of meat placed on top of three scoops of mashed potatoes. Traditional Dutch food in a very intimate and cozy atmosphere. Service was fine. Not much beer on draft (just Heineken, if my memory serves me correctly). Several set meals to choose from, or order a-la-carte. The pea soup starter was good. The mains were all enjoyable; my son gobbled up his pork chop and fries. This places seems to be very popular with tourists... may want a reservation, as it isn't too big a restaurant (or come early, as most folks seem to eat late). read more

This restaurant was recommended by a friend who had recently visited Amsterdam. We were so glad we made reservations prior to our trip because the place was packed & had to turn away walk ins. Not only was the food good, the service was excellent! Friendly and helpful wait staff along with the tasty meal made it a great experience. We had the Hutspot & Boerenkoolstampot and we were thankful they had a menu in English. Always great to try local dishes. My favorite was the dessert, those mini pancakes with butter & powdered sugar (poffertjes)! read more

Centrally located. Traditional food. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices . I really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was tasty and the staff was pretty friendly and very knowledgeable. Like most European restaurants I was impressed by the ease of how many languages the restaurant staff could manage all at the same time. Our waiter spoke, French, English, Dutch and German while helping us. If you are confused about what to get they have several prefixed options that range from simple to more complex. Example you could have an appetizer, an entree, a dessert and a coffee for 18 euros. I had Boerenkoolstamppot a traditional sausage dish with kale mixed with mashed potatoes and shrimp croquettes for my appetizer, my friend had ham croquettes and a traditional stew with sausage. He also had mini pancakes for dessert. He was underwhelmed with the mini pancakes as they had too much butter. The sausage was good but can be a little salty after you've had a lot of it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a place to eat. read more

Perfect for every expectation except perhaps fast food or very expensive high end gourmand Food is Dutch traditional. Enough to fill your belly at a fair price. Pea soup is wow and comes hot. Very good. We walked by without reservations on a Wednesday night and were lucky to be able to sit down. So, I would recommend making reservations in advance. They have very Dutch food in a very Dutch environment and have excellent service! Would recommend coming here if you are in town. read more

Went here last night for dinner and it was AMAZING. First, the hostess was able to find a table for six of us pretty last minute which was really awesome. Next, the food was delicious and filling. Also, it was a full house and we could tell that all of the staff were hustling to give good service. The food arrived promptly and all of our dishes hit the spot. Most couldn't even finish their plates but wanted to!! Also try the dessert! We shared the mousse, Carmel waffle, custard, and cinnamon ice cream and every one was soooooo good. read more

Okay. I absolutely loved my slow cooked beef and onion stew with red cabbage. It was phenomenal! I mean - I actually slowed down to savor every bite. (#3) My wife had the Dutch cauliflower and onion curry casserole - also amazing. (#2) The staff was attentive but busy. The room was full so I they did the best they could. Give yourself time eating here. You're going to be here at least 2 hours minimum with three courses and coffee at the end. Love it! read more
Excellent place to try traditional (I assume) Dutch food. We had two lunch specials (menu #2 and #4) and loved everything. Goat cheese croquettes, oven dish with cauliflower and ground beef, and sea bass were excellent, so was the stroopwaffle ice cream. It's a small place with tight space, but we were able to sit with a baby (stroller had to be folded) without reservation on a Tuesday afternoon in October. read more

I haven't tried any other traditional Dutch food, so I can't tell you if this was authentic, but everything tasted great! My two friends and I ordered Menu 2 and two other dishes and shared everything. My favorites were the zuurkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes and sauerkraut) and oven dish. The prices and portions were pretty reasonable. Service is good but a little slow, and the restaurant is very small. I definitely felt cramped. Overall, it's a good place to get a taste of Dutch food! read more

This was so far my favorite meal in Amsterdam. Found this gem from the UTube video Matt's Travel Tips and it did not disappoint. We had salted pork chops (cooked to perfection), Dutch Peas (with cutlet) and Hutspot, Boerenkool, zuurkoolstappot. Loved every bite. read more

The bitterballen was great and so was the goat cheese croquette but I did not care for the shrimp croquette. My companion got the trio of potato dishes with a sausage and it was quite good. If you're looking to try some authentic Dutch food, it is a good place to try. We enjoyed it, and our server was very kind and helpful with answering questions about the food and various local attractions. read more

While visiting Amsterdam, my husband and I wanted to try tradition Dutch cuisine. We learned Of The Pantry and made a reservation for 2. Glad we did, as we saw quite a few parties turned away, even on a weekday. We found The Pantry to be Incredibly cozy and quaint. It's like sitting in a family living room. The staff was very welcoming and service was excellent. I had the Pea-soup with rye bread and smoked bacon and as a main dish, the Combination of hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot and zuurkoolstamppot served with a meatball. My husband, who doesn't like onions, had the warmDutch Ham with a honey mustard sauce, fries and salad. Both entrees were DELICIOUS Dutch comfort food. The price was reasonable and We will most definitely recommend and visit The Pantry on our next visit. A must try! read more

I loved this place. We got there early for dinner and were able to sit outside. The temperature was perfect but they had lap blankets at each seat in case it got too cool, which I thought was a great touch. The waiters were so nice and they all seemed to be "restaurant fluent" in several languages...they spoke English to us, German to the people to the right of us and Polish to the customers to the left of us. We started out with the herring served with onions and pickles...it was fun to try a local standard ...kind of like eating oysters in New Orleans! I'm not sure I'd eat it again, but then I thought I'd never eat oysters again after my first try and now I love them. I washed them down with a La Trappe beer, something I will definitely try again if I can find it at home. For my main course, I ordered "ham and fried potatoes." It was a roasted pork leg with the most delicious honey mustard sauce. My husband teases me that he always wins the ordering but this night, he had to concede that my meal was the winner...he had one of the mashed potato meals...good, but not as great as mine. All in all, we had a lovely evening here. Outdoor dining, the friendly staff, nice fellow diners from other countries, and the tasty meal all made for a great dining experience in Amsterdam. read more

Came here last week with my friend because we wanted to eat a proper Dutch meal before we headed back to the States. And boy were we glad we did. Place was a little small, but it worked well with the intimate, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Bonus points for the lovely staff that cracked jokes, danced, and sang in the kitchen. Ate herring for the first time and loved it. My friend and I both ordered the combo of hutspot, boerenkooi, and zuurkoolstamppot with the smoked sausage (which was a great way to try a little bit of everything). To top our amazing dinner off, we ordered poffertjes which was nothing I've ever had before - wish all pancakes were made like this!! Overall had a great experience and would definitely recommend others to go if you have the chance to. read more

We had dinner reservations here the last night in Amsterdam. It is a very small, intimate place so it's not great for groups. Has a very traditional menu that we took full advantage of! They offer pairing so we were able to try a few different things! Staff was very friendly too! read more

We were looking for traditional Dutch food on our first night in Amsterdam when we stumbled upon this place. The interior was very cool and had that dark and cozy atmosphere. Food was great and the portions were generous. I had the Hutspot and it was very filling and the flavors were on point. The gravy coated the potatoes and sausage nicely and brought the dish together. Do yourself a favor and order it with some dark beer! read more

This is your place for authentic Dutch food!! Located on a very busy street, so I suggest eating inside, but it's small. Either get there before 5pm or make a reservation. Service is excellent and fast. Very cute ambiance. Happy Eating!! read more
