This place was recommended to us by the concierge in our hotel as being a very good place to go to get traditional Dutch dishes. We had been quite confused up until then as to what Dutch cuisine actually was, as everyone we had asked mentioned something, followed up with "well actually it came from X originally, but...." When we reached the Pantry - it was almost full, but the waiter sat us down next to another couple, saying "you dont mind sharing do you?" which given the cosiness of the place we really didnt mind! There was a lovely atmosphere in the place, lots of laughter and giggling and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves - always a good sign.. We ordered very quickly (starving) from the incredible waiter/maitre'd/bartender and our food arrived at around the same time as some breads (which were delicious - fresh, crusty, with some nuttiness, it was just as well that the food arrived at the same time, or I would have just spent the night grazing on bread!) I had a pea soup with bacon - perfect comfort food, followed by sea bream - fabulous, with some really home-y potato and vegetables. It was like dinner your mum would make when she hasnt seen you in a while :) Definitely worth a look in, and great value for what you get. This place was brilliant, small and intimate with super friendly wait-staff who will take their time explaining the menu if need be. They had a good set menu option but I was set on having poffertjes for dessert. We had: Dutch goat cheese croquettes with rocket salad and honey mustard dressing Pea-soup served with rye bread and smoked bacon - I grew up eating pea soup and this was just as delicious as my Mum's version. For mains the option was combination of hutspot, boerenkool and zuurkoolstamppot served with a smoked sausage or a meatball (Hutspot - mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions; Boerenkoolstamppot - mashed potatoes mixed with kale; Zuurkoolstamppot - mashed potatoes mixed with sauerkraut) We both had the same main - Graeme with smoked sausage, and mine with a meatball. Easily the BEST meal Hubby and I had in Amsterdam and well worth the high Yelp rating. We arrived around 6:00p without a dinner reservation. The gentleman working the front of the restaurant was so nice and accommodating. We waited a short amount of time and was seated in the cozy and eclectic restaurant. My oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, onions and mashed potatoes was fantastic and Hubby's Zuurkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes with sauerkraut) with smoked sausage was equally wonderful. Highly recommend for an authentic Dutch meal, but make a reservation or arrive early. For American tourists, this restaurant does not take American Express, but did accept Visa. read more

Yelpers are the best. Followed the Yelp reviews to this place called The Pantry, where they served the traditional Dutch dish of mashed potatoes with carrots and ground beef mixed in called hutspot. They also had one with kale mixed in and one with sauerkraut, which I quite liked. The other dishes we got were a shepherd's pie-like dish with cauliflower, pea soup with rye bread and bacon, goat cheese croquettes, and for dessert, vlaflip (custard, yogurt, and fruit syrup mixed together), and poffertjes (fluffy pancakes with powdered sugar). The food felt so home-y and was so good. All the food came out piping hot. Service was also amazing. Oh, and the menu comes in multiple languages (including English) so that was helpful for my boyfriend and I. Go past all the restaurants with guys standing outside trying to get you to try their food and head straight to The Pantry for traditional Dutch fare. This place, amongst all the flashy restaurants around it, is lovely. Sure, it's in a touristy hot spot and the fact that they have menus in several languages should turn you off but don't mind all that. To start off, my friend and I shared the Dutch goat cheese croquettes and it was tasty. I forgot how much I loved croquettes til I had them here. Cheesy, crunchy, crispy and a great way to start dinner. If you are an omnivore, the best bet on the menu is the Combo of Hutspot (mashed potatoes mixed with stewed beef, carrots and onions), Boerenkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes mixed with kale) & Zuurkoolstamppot (mashed potatoes mixed with sauerkraut) with either a smoked sausage or meatball. You get three big scoops of each on your plate. My favorite of the three was the Hutspot but each was delicious. Although the Zuurkoolstamppot was a little too salty for my liking. Looking for traditional Dutch food on the web I came across The Pantry. We showed up around 7:30 to find a packed house, but they seated us in about 15 minutes. The wait staff was super friendly, helpful and with great senses of humor. Their Menu #1 was the assortment of stampot, hutspot and zuurkoolspot along with pea soup to start, and a yoghurt custard dish for desert. It was All delicious and plentiful. A great meal, and exactly what I was looking for. This is a new favorite restaurant in Amsterdam, and one that I will surely return to. read more

The best thing we had was the fried goat cheese. But my oven baked plate of cauliflower, potatoes, and beef was over salted and yet under flavored. Just really blah. Impeccably tasty. As an American I had never eaten Dutch food before, but felt obliged to do so on the last night of my stay in Amerdam. My tour guide earlier in the day-- who'd lived in Amerstam for 20+ years-- was unable to recommend any good Dutch restaurants and basically told us Dutch food was bland so just eat somewhere else. Thankfully I yelped this place because my friends and I were very pleasantly surprised. The 3 of us literally ate every scrap of food on our plates. We had the hutspot, beef & onion stew, and small sole filet with ravigote sauce. All were delicious. The space is small and it is popular so I recommend a reservation. We dined here on our first evening in Amsterdam based on reviews we read prior to leaving on our trip. We didn't have reservations but showed up before 7pm and were able to get a table. The restaurant is pretty small so if you are planning on going at peak time or on a weekend you should make reservations. They offered english menus and there were alot of english speaking folks there but it definitely did not feel touristy at all. Service was very friendly and a little slow (which ended up being the "norm" for every place we visited!) and they were able to make good recommendations for meals. We started with the pea soup which was excellent - highly recommend it! I ordered a sausage dish with a trio of different kinds of mashed potatoes and my husband ordered a dish that reminded us of shepherds pie but with cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. This is where I struggle with the rating - the food was good, but very heavy (or maybe hearty is a better word) which is not how I typically eat. So was it my favorite meal ever? Not at all, but only because I'm not a meat and potatoes kind of girl. That being said, it did taste good and my husband enjoyed it so I based my rating on that. However, if you're looking for a light meal or a salad this may not be the right place for you! Food was priced well - dinner for two plus drinks put us right around 50EUR which was about what we ended up spending most nights. The Pantry was a little tough to find, with a tiny, unassuming front on a busy narrow street full of restaurants. Our dinner was totally worth the extra walking we did though, I am so happy we were able to try such delicious Dutch food. My husband and I decided to share one of the set menus with three dishes, and it was enough food, but we weren't overstuffed. We started with goat cheese croquettes, and our main was a casserole with cauliflower, ground beef, cheese, mashed potatoes and curry spices. It was like a version of Shepherd's pie, but much better. Both dishes were so flavorful, and I loved that they were both things I've never tried before. Came here without a reservation and were able to sneak right in in a Saturday night (830-ish). Service suffered a little bit but it was a packed house. Ordered a bottle of the ugni blanc house wine. It was decent, but exactly get what you pay for. That said, not a drop left at then end of the night. I credit that to the delicious food we ate. My wife and I split the goat cheese croquettes and split pea soup. The croquettes were the best I ever had. Soup hit the spot as well. For dinner, wifey ordered the Sea Bass. Since she is a healthy eater, the sea bass was perfect. Lightly seasoned. Great flavor and fresh. I ordered the traditional Dutch ham. There may have been a mistake since they brought salmon out instead. I didn't even care. Vibe was great, I didn't mind waiting. Pantry is a perfect choice if you're looking to experience authentic Dutch food while in Amsterdam. Nestled in a vibrant and bustling part of the city, Pantry is off the Main Street and easy to find. While in Amsterdam a week for work, I ate here three times: once for lunch and twice for dinner. Each time, the staff was very nice, quick, and served absolutely amazing food. For a great taste of the Netherlands be sure to get their hutspot and bitterballs as both are amazing. I had the hutspot twice, and the meatball was my preference over the sausage - but both were delicious and filling. I actually can't give this place enough stars. The waiters are fluent in about 6 languages AND the friendliest, most engaging, and extremely efficient people you'll ever meet. The food is exquisite, prompt, and well-presented and came highly recommended by locals (e.g. The guy at the front desk at our hotel). The décor is charming and traditional, and even though there are enough tables crammed in there to seat an army, the feel is cozy rather than cramped. It's extremely popular. Reservations are an absolute must after 5:30, although by a major miracle we showed up impromptu on a Saturday night and they felt bad for us and worked us in (everyone else after us was turned away, with sincere regret). Ate here based on yelp reviews and were not disappointed. I had the oven bake with cauliflower, onions and beef (meal 2) and My husband had a traditional combination meal with sausage. They were busy but sat us right away luckily. The food was good. Reminded us of what we normally eat in the US (Shepard's pie and brats) For appetizers - Hubby had the salted herring. I didn't care for that at all but he liked it. I had the goat cheese croquettes. We shared the mini pancakes and they were delicious. But the best was the wait staff.
