We were looking for a good Dutch place to eat at, and this place did not disappoint. We were lucky enough to be able to snag the last 2 top table, as the restaurant was then booked up the rest of the night - so go early, or make a dinner reservation! The menu comes in a variety of languages to suit the international traveler, and they do offer a 4 course tasting type menu. We decided to try the Dutch steak, served over sauteed mixed veggies and with a side of fries and also the Hutspot, which was mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables I believe and served with either a sausage or a meatball. We got the sausage and it was delicious; very similar to a smoked Kielbasa sausage, but fresher in my opinion. We ordered wine and beer for our drinks, and no complaints there! Wine was excellent, and the beer was cold. I would have like to try the goat cheese croquettes, as I heard a table next to us say there were amazing. If you're looking for traditional Dutch food, this is the place to go. It's a neat little restaurant and do try to get one of the outside tables. We had an excellent time talking to some other Americans and I older couple from Germany. The wait staff was excellent and very helpful in making our selections. I had the combination hotspot dinner which contains various types of mashed potato blends and edit a meatball. This place is one of the quainter dining options in an area overrun with overpriced and underwhelming restaurants. The staff was very friendly and quite entertaining. I'm still unsure how authentically Dutch the food is because of how touristy the area is, but I definitely enjoyed my meal. Very tiny, cozy restaurant. We went here for lunch and we were so full afterwards! The portions are pretty big so I would recommend sharing an app then entree if you normally don't eat a lot. I was there, for the last time, several years ago, for a very early breakfast. I ordered pancakes, eggs, ham. The pancakes looked done. When I cut into them, the inside was gooey and uncooked. I sent them back and didn't want them replaced. If they can't do it right the first time, why bother. When I went to pay, the guy at the register started making excuses about the pancakes and how they offered to make new ones, etc. I hadn't said a word to him, and he just went on and on. Was in Amsterdam for work and tried The Pantry. Wasn't our first stop, tried two other places and even 10pm was an hour wait but we get lucky finding this place because it was great. Very casual atmosphere and decor. Services was also very quick and friendly which is not always the case in Europe. Food seemed to be authentic Dutch not that I am an expert. I had the croquettes to start which were great and that I got addicted to while there. Had Hutspot for an entree, also very good and finished with the Caramel Ice Cream with a caramel waffle which was amazing. The Pantry is a quaint little spot tucked into a very high trafficked touristy area of Amsterdam. The restaurant manages to maintain it's quaint little vibe however even offering up blankets as part of its outdoor seating for those cold Dutch nights. It adds a nice homely and unique touch to it. Haven't seen this at other restaurants. I had the Hutspot combo with sausage. It was good just the typical bland Dutch food that I came to experience which is exactly what I wanted and got. So if you're in the mood for trying authentic Dutch food this is a good spot. The food, however, is magnificent, and as far as I know, very authentic. We had a cauliflower/sausage casserole dish, satay, and a sausage mix with the three mixed mashed potato dishes- Hutspot, Boerenkoolstamppot, and Zuurkoolstammpot. This is my go to spot to bring visitors because it is located conveniently near Leidseplein, the food is tasty, they serve huge portions (perfect for Americans!), and the staff is friendly. I must admit that reading some of the other Yelp reviews complaining about the food made me laugh! There is a reason that there are no Dutch restaurants outside of the Netherlands... Dutch cuisine is focused on filling people's bellies and is dominated by bread, potatoes, boiled vegetables, and sausages. Oh, and they are also excellent at deep frying stuff. This is not haute cuisine, this is peasant food. With that said, The Pantry is a great restaurant to eat traditional Dutch food because the only other way is if you're invited for dinner at a Dutch person's home. I have a hard time rating the food I tried here because it was my first experience eating Dutch food aside from the snacks and sweets, like poffertjes, pannekoeken, bitterballen, and kroket (much like korokke). Most of the food here was simple starchy food that's seasoned with little more than salt and pepper and come in generous portions. While I've decided that Dutch food just isn't something I'll likely crave, I enjoyed my dining experience here. Another gem discovered on Yelp, we spent a while looking around for The Pantry (it's tucked away on a little side street, just off the Leidseplein), but believe me it was worth walking around for! After reading some of the reviews that other Yelpers had left, I opted for the combination of hutspot, boerenkool and zuurkoolstamppot with a meatball. What an amazingly rich and tasty dish, perfect for warming your cockles on a winters day! It consisted of mashed potato with carrot and swede, mashed potato with kale and bacon, and mashed potato with saurkraut, with a huge meatball on top. I've never tasted anything like it, and I wish I could eat this sort of thing at home! The waiter was very good at explaining the menu and recommended a good beer to accompany my meal. On our second visit, I had the same again but from the fixed menu. I had pea soup with rye bread to start, and as a newcomer to pea soup, I have to say it was just brilliant! So warming and tasty. I feel like I want to start eating pea soup more often but I'm just worried it won't compare to the pea soup from the pantry! For dessert I had something called 'vlaflip', which was yogurt, custard and some fruit sauce. It was okay, but not three things I would usually combine and eat together. Dutch food is meant to be eaten in the dead of winter to fortify the spirit in the midst of the freezing temperatures. In the summer...it's alright I guess. We arrived a bit early and had to wait for our reserved table to open up. The interior space and restrooms are rather small, and the tables are quite close to each other. But the decor is very cute and Dutch, with lots of lamps and latch-hook art. For example, I sat below a woven rendering of the Nights Watch. On to the food. Between set menus 1 and 2, we ended up having a decent meal between us. Appetizers: (1) Pea-Soup with rye bread and smoked bacon: kind of a burnt aftertaste. Granted, this may have been intentional, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for in a soup. At least it's hearty. (2) Dutch goat cheese croquettes were amazing. Think fried cheese with a batter crust, but kind of delicate. Delicious! Main: (1) Stamppot served with a smoked sausage: quite good! The sausage was piping hot and satisfying. The stamppot consisted of mashed potatoes mixed with moist vegetables and gravy, which was delightful since we love mashed potatos. (2) Oven dish with cauliflower, ground beef, Old Amsterdam cheese, curry onions and mashed potatoes was below average. It's basically a dry casserole. Once the cauliflower was gone, it was kind of hard to keep eating it, as it was a crust of dry mashed potatoes with layers of ground beef and a tiny bit of flavoring that may or may not have been curry. Dessert: (1) Vlaflip (vanilla custard with yoghurt and syrup): it's just yogurt. Flavored yogurt to be sure, but it's an ice cream soda glass filled with sugared yogurt. (2) Poffertjes: very interesting! I never thought mini pancakes and powdered sugar would be so good. The cakes were pretty small, but very fluffy and delicious. Overall, it's a hit or miss kind of situation. Not sure if I would go back, but it was a fascinating foray into traditional Dutch cuisine. read more

The combo menu have you plenty to eat with no room to spare. If you don't eat that much, it actually might be able to satisfy 2 people. The beer selection was great as well. When we came in, it was kind of empty. But as time passed the restaurant filled up. And pretty quickly. They even started to reserve some tables for guests. Little cozy restaurant that serves delicious traditional Dutch food and good beer. Food is tasty in big hearty portions. Loved the sausage with mashed potato trio (who knew mashed potato could taste so good with sauerkraut), and goat cheese croquettes were rich and tasty (although it'd probably taste even better if there was ham in it). The cauliflower meat pie was similar to the American potato meat pie and you can never go wrong with that. We had a great experience trying out restaurants in the area, but The Pantry is definitely our favorite. It's good comfort starchy food with tasty good beer, and friendly service lady who makes great conversations with a huge smile. Warning: you do feel very heavy afterwards. read more
