This is an amazing brunch place and is my favorite breakfast place in all of New Haven. Absolutely worth the wait. The pantry is the perfect place for brunch. They have an awesome selection of savory and sweet breakfast/brunch options. 5/5 for food: I ordered the cinnamon swirl pancakes to share and then a Belgium chocolate chip waffle with sausage to not share. The cinnamon pancakes are to die for. They are so yummy, best combo between cinnamon and sweetness and the pancakes are the perfect level of crispy! I will say its a huge amount to eat by yourself, I'd advise sharing this plate to prevent any stomach aches from all that sugar. The belgium waffle was very good too. 4/5 for atmosphere: Only giving this a four because the restaurant is small. As someone who loves weekend brunch, I was really excited about coming here. It's a cute little spot covered in jazz posters and there is usually a line out the door. Our server was nice, but service was pretty slow. It took a while for us just to get our water and orange juice and for our order to be taken. I had the Salmon Benedict, which was decent. It was a bit salty, but then again, most salmon brunch dishes tend to be. The home fries with scallions were good, as was the cantaloupe. The Pantry isn't my favorite spot (but that might be because I've been spoiled by New York brunches), but it might be the best one in New Haven. I'd come back again when I start craving brunch food. Wow! Found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Let's say, you definitely can't go wrong with the cinnamon roll pancakes! You have to order it to try! It was fluffy and it comes with a little bit of the cinnamon roll frosting - it is sweet enough that you don't need to put additional syrup - just a little of the salty butter to give you the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The wait to get seated was long. The wait to get food was even longer. The food was good. The service was terrible. I might come back here during a less busy time than a Sunday morning, but what is a brunch place if not some place you'd want to go to on a Sunday morning? The wait service was quite bad. Our waitress disappeared for quite some time at one point; she was very rude when asked about substituting bacon instead of fruit (sure, it's ok if we can't substitute, but her response was borderline angry and uncalled for. In fact, we ended up ordering a side of bacon anyway, despite the fact that it cost an arm and a leg for three or so slices). Prices seem arbitrary. The cinnamon roll pancake was not impressive. Came here on a Friday morning at around 9:30am. The place was pretty full except for two 6 person tables. I was surprised to find it this full on a Friday but glad we were able to get a seat! Between 3 people, we ordered: Short stack of cinnamon roll pancakes (5/5) - Delicious! A little on the sweet side by itself so I didn't add much syrup to this. Eggs benedict (4/5) - Loved the toasty buttery english muffin that this comes with. 2 egg breakfast w/ bacon (4/5) - Simple but good, the potatoes on the side were crispy even though they were not deep fried. The bacon here is really good too, very crispy. The portions were good, not too much food and not too little. BREAKFAST REVIEW Of course, when coming to New Haven for the weekend, I was told I had to go to the infamous "Pantry." "But beware of the wait!" I was forewarned. They were not wrong. I got there around 11 on a Sunday and there was a line of 10-15 people in front of us. Fortunately, the line moves pretty fast and I was catching up with a friend who I hadn't seen in a while so I was in no rush but don't come in here looking to get in and out. This is a place for a slow, leisurely breakfast. When we finally got in, we saw how small the place was and how close you are to other diners. Don't expect to be able to have too private of a conversation. It definitely has a local diner feel, though. FOOD: I ordered the veggie omelet (you can choose whatever goes in it from the list) and my friend and I shared a stack of big pancakes. Everything was good, not great. This is above average, greasy spoon, diner food but it's not "eyes rolling to the back of your head" good. If I came back, I would definitely add chocolate chips and strawberries to the pancakes. This is my absolute favorite place to get brunch - everything here was so delicious. The only annoying thing is that this place is cash-only, and there can be a wait sometimes. I usually only get the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, and the Scrambled Eggs/Bacon/Toast/Home Fries combo. I would be extremely cautious about not ordering too much - you might think that you need more, but you don't. Honestly, the medium-sized Cinnamon Roll Pancakes + the eggs combo is MORE than enough for two people. I cannot rave enough about these pancakes. They are so soft and fluffy, and the cinnamon sugar glazes over perfectly, creating the best crunch when you bite down. I love the cream cheese swirl they give you, and the huge mounds of butter. These are the best pancakes I've EVER had. The eggs combo is nothing special, but the savoriness does add a nice balance to the meal. The eggs could be better, and they could offer more bacon, but overall, it's pretty good. I especially love the home fries though. They're very crunchy and mushy in the middle, and the little bits of green onion add the best flavor. I would recommend this for the home fries alone! They handle eggs like you expect a griddle type diner to do them, but some stuff that can knock you out of the park when it's done on a good griddle like basic toast is good here, but not as good as other diner type places I've been. This place is CASH ONLY, so come prepared. It's a cheap eat, so we've never had issues with that, but you can't use that card! It's also tiny and cramped. They packed that place with all the tables that will fit. So, expect to be comfortable beside someone else. Also, due to the tiny space, there's usually a wait. It's all about timing to see when you'll get seated, sometimes is longer than others. I visited the Pantry last Sun. morning for breakfast. At the time of my arrival (11am), there was a line about 5 parties long in front of me. Fortunately, it moved quickly, and I was able to get seated in about 10-15 min. When I was seated, it became clear that there's almost always a line on weekends because the dining area is quite small, and the Pantry is the most popular breakfast eatery in New Haven. For my meal, I opted for the short stack of cinnamon roll pancakes ($7.20), given that they're the most popular offering and that I'm a sucker for cinnamon rolls. The short stack consisted of three light and fluffy pancakes of medium thickness with cinnamon-flavored dough swirled generously thoughout. They're topped with a swirl of white (cream cheese?) icing, and are served with a pat of butter, which I distributed through them after cutting them into bite-sized wedges. They were quite delicious, and were unlike any other pancakes I've had before. Even for a breakfast place, the menu is pretty brief, consisting of only one side of one page. Most of the other offerings are your typical breakfast fare (eggs, pancakes, French toast, etc.), so if you're looking for a solid breakfast, this seems to be the place to go. The menu and walls are decorated in accordance with a jazz theme, and jazz music is playing in the background. One of my favorite casual brunch spots in New Haven (or ever..?)! I love coming here because the menu offers a variety of brunch items whether you want eggs, pancakes, hashbrowns, toast, or coffee. Food is pretty good but I'm excessively disappointed in the indifference from the server that waited on me today. Sat my good at the table and literally ignored me for the remainder of my visit. Walked around asking the surrounding tables if they needed anything else but me the pregnant diner was skipped over again and again. Maybe it's because I was the only black woman dinning.
