The Peddler Steak House is located in the Oak Park Shopping Center. Casa Carbone is in the same shopping center. My first time at Peddler Steak House, I had trouble finding it, as it is a little hidden. It has been open since 1969, so it was likely there before most everything else. It is the oldest continuously run steakhouse in the Triangle. The current owner started working at Peddler at age 19 as a dishwasher before working his way up the ladder at the family-owned restaurant. There is a large parking lot that offers free parking, so that makes things easier. Reservations are only taken for parties of 8 or more. The wait for a table can be 60-90 minutes, and yes, it is worth the wait. I went with a group of 8, so we had reservations, but they did require the whole party to be there before seating us. The restaurant is very dark, although it appears there are windows that could be open to let in a little light in the back room; they seemed sealed shut. There is dark wood paneling. We used smartphone flashlights to read the menus, so they do need more lighting inside. Our waitress was on top of things from drinks to appetizers to entrees to desserts. She was friendly and knew the menu very well. She even let us know the tip was already added and filled in our checks so we just had to sign, as she knew we were struggling to see in the dark. I ordered the filet mignon with a baked potato. It came with their salad bar. Iceberg lettuce seemed to be the only option, but there were plenty of toppings and dressings. I liked that the menu described the different ways the 28-day-aged steaks could be cooked on the charcoal grill, so there was no confusion. My steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious. I had planned to take home leftovers but ate every bite there. The baked potato was great too. I got a piece of cheesecake to-go, and it was as wonderful as the rest of the meal. I decided to try a new place for steak for my birthday dinner. They don't take reservations, but our party of 4 didn't have to wait very long before being seated on a Wednesday night. The salad bar was really good, I like any salad bar with pickle spears AND pickle chips. The Peddler came by with a huge NY strip and ribeye, which he carves tableside. I asked how large a steak he could make and he said he's done 50+ ounce steaks before. I went for an 18 ounce strip. I mean at $2.50 for each extra ounce over 10, the price adds up quickly. Nevertheless, the steak was one of the best I've had in a long time. I did add a little butter, because with that thick steak it can be a bit dry. But it was cooked to a perfect medium, I could taste that charred flavor. Just fantastic. The baked potato could've been better, but it needed salt and pepper on the outside. Service was average at best. My waitress was not attentive. I had to ask for my club soda three times. It was not enough to ruin the meal, but it is a detail that should not happen in a steakhouse setting where the foundation is simple hospitality and consistency. We have been going there for 15 years. We went a few weeks ago, I was having surgery in a few days and wanted to have a nice dinner. It was a Thursday night and we wated 1 hour and 45 minutes for a table. The waitress took our orders, I ordered a steak medium rare, my husband had the prime rib. When I received mine, it was almost well done. I showed the waitress and her attitude was less then welcoming. Instead of taking care of it, she asked if i want anything else and walked away. I waited for my hubby to finish his meal since they took mine away, and we left. This is the 3rd time this has happened, I don't know if it is the young cooks that are always talking to the waitresses or the management does not care. I'm a fan of their filets, having had virtually every other cut on the menu, they're one of the few upper-end steakhouses that does filet mignon right. I heard about this Raleigh steakhouse awhile ago but we never visited. A friend suggested we go last week to check it out and after reading the reviews, we decided to try it out. It's a charming old school restaurant that is nestled in a shopping center off Glenwood Avenue. The exterior looks like the frame of a house which adds to the charm. I'm not sure though if they built the shopping center around the house or, it was modeled that way when it was opened. Inside it's dark and charming with the wood paneling on the walls. There is a really nice bar area separate from the dining room which is small but not cramped. The kitchen is off the dining room and it's open. Again, the ambiance adds to to feeling that you stepped back in time a bit to the 1970s when most of the restaurants were like this. The food here is really good. I like the old school salad bar. Again, it brings you back a bit. Self serve salad bars were standard fare in many restaurants decades ago. I know with Covid and peoples changing dining tastes, they have become a bit obsolete. But it's presented here nicely. The offerings were fresh and the other diners were not leaving big messes after they went. The steak peddler came around with the steak offerings for the night. My wife and I both got Rib Eyes. The peddler cuts the steak in front of you at the table. Nice touch. The other couple ordered a strip and a chicken dish. Unlike some other steak houses you get a side of your own and not ones for the table. I got a baked potato and my wife went with the asparagus. The steaks were cooked perfectly. They were seasoned with simple salt and pepper. We enjoyed them very much. We did get the sampler appetizer which consisted of fried mushrooms, mozzarella sticks and onion rings. Again, simple. The bar occupies a small corner of the restaurant with nostalgic but annoying salon doors that make it difficult to carry your unfinished drink to the dining room. ATTENTION BARTENDERS: maraschino cherries have NO place in a cocktail, they are barely acceptable on top of an ice cream sundae. Everyone do yourselves a favor, if you want an inexpensive elevated tasting experience for your clients that drink cocktails with a cherry in it, get some frozen black cherries (Costco has an excellent option) and soak them in some amaretto liquor. Great little steakhouse in Raleigh! Recently came here for a date night with my husband after searching Yelp for a new restaurant to try. This place is small and dimly lit place that adds to the atmosphere. Be prepared to wait as they do not take reservations and the wait was over an hour. Service was great. Our server was attentive, funny and offered recommendations when asked. We started with shrimp cocktail that was pretty good, and the mozzarella cheese sticks. The cocktail sauce has a bit of a bite to it so be prepared for that. We ordered two ribeyes with baked potatoes and the salad bar. The salad bar was surprisingly good with numerous options. The ribeyes were cooked appropriately to medium and the quality of meat seemed good. The only complaint we had is that both steaks were lukewarm at best. It's the kind of joint your grandparents went to 50 years ago and still go to today. The menu is simple, and I knew they were known for their prime rib cooked medium-rare with a sweet potato. The meat was cooked to perfection, well seasoned, and flat-out delicious! I ate every bite. I ordered some horseradish sauce on the side but I really didn't need it since the meat was so flavorful. The sweet potato was good too and came with cinnamon sugar and butter. I didn't order dessert, but the desserts I saw looked really good. This was a splurge meal for me since it is a bit more pricey than what I normally like to pay, but the service was very good, the food was great and you do get meat, a side, bread, and a salad bar so overall I think the price equaled what the experience was. If you don't like it, you can ask for a different piece. They have a salad bar with lots of toppings and house made dressings. The ribeye was delicious, perfectly seasoned and cooked to the correct temperature/doneness of medium. The baked potato was plain but they had butter and sour cream at the table. You could also get more toppings from the salad bar to make it a loaded baked potato. The restaurant is located in a shopping center so parking is easy.
