18 ounce strip, half a baked potato, asparagus
    Adam B.

I'd been wanting to try the Peddler for a good year. And since my mom loves a charcoal cooked steak, it looked like the place to go. I mean how many places cook steaks over charcoal anymore? [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a step back in time. The restaurant is definitely not bright or large.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And since they don't take reservations for 7 people or less, you'd better show up early. The salad bar was really good, I like any salad bar with pickle spears AND pickle chips. The Peddler came by with a huge NY strip and ribeye, which he carves tableside. I asked how large a steak he could make and he said he's done 50+ ounce steaks before. I went for an 18 ounce strip. I mean at $2.50 for each extra ounce over 10, the price adds up quickly. Nevertheless, the steak was one of the best I've had in a long time. I did add a little butter, because with that thick steak it can be a bit dry. But it was cooked to a perfect medium, I could taste that charred flavor. Just fantastic. The baked potato could've been better, but it needed salt and pepper on the outside. It just didn't have flavor until I added S&P, butter, cheese, bacon, and chives. Asparagus tasted fine too, but again, it need more salt and pepper. The grilled bread was great also. And props for engaging servers. Our server, who was really funny and sweet, wanted me to come back and keep getting a bigger steak, and I was asking her, what do I get if I finish it? Sorry, but I'll need more than pride. But I'll definitely be back.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Peddler Steakhouse is an older establishment and it feels that way the moment you walk in. The dining room leans traditional and the crowd skews older.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar area is extremely dark. To the point where I could barely see the floor in front of me and reading the menu was borderline impossible. Lighting is a basic hospitality feature and they need to improve that immediately.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] On the food side, I was impressed. The prime rib was cooked beautifully and the rib eye was cooked to perfection. Both meats were flavorful and tender. The salad bar was enjoyable and felt like a strong part of the experience. I did not appreciate that bread was served with the meal rather than with the salad. At that point my focus was on the prime rib and baked potato so the bread became an afterthought. Service was average at best. My waitress was not attentive. I had to ask for my club soda three times. It was not enough to ruin the meal, but it is a detail that should not happen in a steakhouse setting where the foundation is simple hospitality and consistency. In terms of value, I believe the price matched the quality. There is no overpromise happening here. It is not Angus Barn and you are not paying Angus Barn prices. Overall it is a decent spot. I am glad I went, I enjoyed the meat, and I have no real complaints beyond lighting and service. Will I return? Probably not, simply because there are better options in the market and I prefer a more modern steakhouse experience.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Loved the vibe of this old school steak house in the middle of Raleigh-Durham.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dimly lit interior with heavy leather chairs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] An old school salad bar can be found which was rather good. The peddler comes to your table with different cuts of meat for you to choose from. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Pretty standard selection of sides but leave room for the bourbon bread pudding. Absolutely delectable.

5-2-25 10 oz. Ribeye with baked sweet potato and a slice of toast & butter.

5-2-25. Went with a large group after a family member graduated from a local university. Everyone ordered a steak. I chose the ribeye which a "peddler" came over to the table and cut my personal hunk of meat to my specifications. If you decide on either the ribeye or the N.Y. Strip, you can have the "peddler" show up to your table as well. I thought the experience was a pretty cool. At steakhouses I've been to in the past, I don't usually get to customize my steak in that way. All entrees come with a salad bar and side. I picked a baked sweet potato which was delicious. The steak was cooked to a nice "medium" and it was also very good. It had the vibe of steakhouses from yesteryear. The salad bar was definitely a nice touch. I did however miss. The side options of creamed spinach, hash browns, etc. The only potato choices were fries, mashed or baked. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The entire restaurant was dimly lit........not so much creating a "romantic" vibe, but almost to the point where you had to use the flashlight on your phone to view the menu and eat.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Was it the absolute best steak joint I've ever been to......no. But it certainly was a really good meal and the prices were more than fair. If I'm ever in the area again, I certainly wouldn't mind returning.

My mother expressed that she wanted a juicy steak for her 77th birthday, so I read the reviews for the steak houses in the area and was impressed by those for The Peddler Steak House. I made reservations at The Peddler Steakhouse for 15 people (14 family members and me) to celebrate my mother's birthday. I received great customer service on the phone call. I was even more excited when I asked if I could bring in a cake and was told that I could. Everything was set for our special celebration. We were greeted with professionalism and pleasantries upon arrival at the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We really loved the ambience. The entire restaurant was fairly dim with somewhat of a nostalgic decor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were escorted to an area in the back with other large groups. This was an ideal setting for us. It created an atmosphere that was comfortable and made us feel at home.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were seated quickly and our hostess, Haley, took our initial drink orders while we waited on everyone to arrive. Haley was very personable and took care of all of our needs with a smile. The children adored her as she made sure to acknowledge their presence there as well. The salad bar was a hit. There were a variety of options available, and everything was fresh and crisp as applicable. The grilled bread was also really good. One suggestion for Haley is that the next time she is serving a table with 15 people that she puts a separate basket of bread on both ends of the table so that people aren't having to move the bread along from one end of the table to the next to ensure everyone can get one. We ordered a variety of dishes. We had ribeye, prime rib , and porterhouse steaks. We also had the salmon dish, tuna dish, and various appetizers and sides. Everyone that had the steak dishes truly enjoyed it. The crab dip and chips were also good; a couple people felt it could've used some more herbal seasoning but otherwise everyone enjoyed it. The salmon was seasoned perfectly, and cooked just right. Having brought in our own cake created an awesome experience for us to sing happy birthday to my mother and have an enjoyable and celebratory gathering. Being able to do this truly made our day and most importantly made my mom very happy. This was our very first time at this restaurant. Everyone had an enjoyable time during our visit. We will be back.

If you want a great steak in an old-fashioned steakhouse vibe, this is the place. I felt like I stepped back in time with the paneled walls, the simply lit dining room & the fresh salad bar. Cocktails were standard old style steakhouse drinks. Steaks were done to perfection, flavorful and tender. The grilled bread served with the pimento cheese appetizer was the perfect accompaniment and was deliciously addictive. Service was quick attentive and no- nonsense. I honestly had a better experience & a better steak here than at the much hyped steakhouse in town.

This was a nice experience dining at The Peddler. I came here for my birthday, and I will tell you, that it is not easy to get into. They wait can be a while, like 90+ minutes at times. They don't take reservations, or have a waitlist. But if you have a large party, around 10 or more people, then they are more willing to accommodate you in advance. The food was really good, and worth enjoying on multiple occasions. I really liked the server, and made good food recommendations. #515

The service was good. Food was really well made and the servers were happy to tailor the dishes to our wants. The pimento cheese appetizer complimented the filet mignon entrè. We had crème brûlée for dessert, it was good and sweet. The atmosphere and vibe was very romantic.

Bourbon bread, pudding. Hands down one of the best desserts I've had in a long time.

We went with the Cajun wings and a seafood boil with king crab legs, shrimp, boiled eggs, potatoes, and corn. You can choose between different marinades and spice levels. We went with garlic butter and mild spice. I really wanted to try the shrimp fried rice but it was no longer available, I assume due to being sold out. Next time! Upon delivery, the food arrived very hot and smelled delicious. They ensure it's packaged so a leak doesn't occur. The wings were super crispy, flavorful, and delicious. The boil was a huge portion, truly fresh, flavorful, and delicious. You never know what you're going to get when you order seafood for delivery, but we were thoroughly impressed! The seafood boil and wings could feed two people I'd say. I can't wait to order again and absolutely will be. I will say the only downside is the price, it was about $160 for the boil and wings, but for a special occasion, absolutely worth it. I was debating between four and five stars but it was SO delicious and fresh, that I had to go with five.

Had the calamari as an appetizer, very chewy, I would not recommend. I really went for the crab broil. Mine had, crab legs, shrimp, potatoes, corn and sausage, everything was cooked well. I went with the Big Bang sauce, mild which includes Cajun, garlic and lemon pepper. It is salty. Overall, it was a solid broil for the price. I went in early on a Friday, service was quick and friendly. Dim lighting and cool upbeat music.

The NY Strip arrived more than well done, so we told the waitress and she apologized and sent it back to the kitchen. As I was eating the meatloaf, I noticed an off taste and texture. I looked closer and realized it was still pink/slimy/raw! How can meatloaf be raw? It's supposed to be fully cooked first and then grilled. Whoever sliced it from the "loaf" should have noticed it was not cooked before throwing it on the grill! We notified the manager when he came to apologize for the NY strip, so he took the meatloaf back to the kitchen. When the NY Strip came back out, my husband cut into it and it was shiny and purple inside, from top to bottom...absolutely rare. The waitress agreed it was rare and took it back to the kitchen again. When it came out for the third time, it was perfect (third time's a charm, I guess?). The only saving grace was the kind waitress who felt awful about the sub par food. The kitchen put her in an uncomfortable position, but she handled it with grace. We ordered the chocolate torte for dessert and it was very good, but that's the only thing I'd return for.
