18 ounce strip, half a baked potato, asparagus
Adam B.

I'd been wanting to try the Peddler for a good year. And since my mom loves a charcoal cooked steak, it looked like the place to go. I mean how many places cook steaks over charcoal anymore? It's a step back in time. The restaurant is definitely not bright or large. And since they don't take reservations for 7 people or less, you'd better show up early. The salad bar was really good, I like any salad bar with pickle spears AND pickle chips. The Peddler came by with a huge NY strip and ribeye, which he carves tableside. I asked how large a steak he could make and he said he's done 50+ ounce steaks before. I went for an 18 ounce strip. I mean at $2.50 for each extra ounce over 10, the price adds up quickly. Nevertheless, the steak was one of the best I've had in a long time. I did add a little butter, because with that thick steak it can be a bit dry. But it was cooked to a perfect medium, I could taste that charred flavor. Just fantastic. The baked potato could've been better, but it needed salt and pepper on the outside. It just didn't have flavor until I added S&P, butter, cheese, bacon, and chives. Asparagus tasted fine too, but again, it need more salt and pepper. The grilled bread was great also. And props for engaging servers. Our server, who was really funny and sweet, wanted me to come back and keep getting a bigger steak, and I was asking her, what do I get if I finish it? Sorry, but I'll need more than pride. But I'll definitely be back.

Loved the vibe of this old school steak house in the middle of Raleigh-Durham. Dimly lit interior with heavy leather chairs. An old school salad bar can be found which was rather good. The peddler comes to your table with different cuts of meat for you to choose from. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Pretty standard selection of sides but leave room for the bourbon bread pudding. Absolutely delectable.

5-2-25. Went with a large group after a family member graduated from a local university. Everyone ordered a steak. I chose the ribeye which a "peddler" came over to the table and cut my personal hunk of meat to my specifications. If you decide on either the ribeye or the N.Y. Strip, you can have the "peddler" show up to your table as well. I thought the experience was a pretty cool. At steakhouses I've been to in the past, I don't usually get to customize my steak in that way. All entrees come with a salad bar and side. I picked a baked sweet potato which was delicious. The steak was cooked to a nice "medium" and it was also very good. It had the vibe of steakhouses from yesteryear. The salad bar was definitely a nice touch. I did however miss. The side options of creamed spinach, hash browns, etc. The only potato choices were fries, mashed or baked. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. The entire restaurant was dimly lit........not so much creating a "romantic" vibe, but almost to the point where you had to use the flashlight on your phone to view the menu and eat. Was it the absolute best steak joint I've ever been to......no. But it certainly was a really good meal and the prices were more than fair. If I'm ever in the area again, I certainly wouldn't mind returning.

My mother expressed that she wanted a juicy steak for her 77th birthday, so I read the reviews for the steak houses in the area and was impressed by those for The Peddler Steak House. I made reservations at The Peddler Steakhouse for 15 people (14 family members and me) to celebrate my mother's birthday. I received great customer service on the phone call. I was even more excited when I asked if I could bring in a cake and was told that I could. Everything was set for our special celebration. We were greeted with professionalism and pleasantries upon arrival at the restaurant. We really loved the ambience. The entire restaurant was fairly dim with somewhat of a nostalgic decor. We were escorted to an area in the back with other large groups. This was an ideal setting for us. It created an atmosphere that was comfortable and made us feel at home. We were seated quickly and our hostess, Haley, took our initial drink orders while we waited on everyone to arrive. Haley was very personable and took care of all of our needs with a smile. The children adored her as she made sure to acknowledge their presence there as well. The salad bar was a hit. There were a variety of options available, and everything was fresh and crisp as applicable. The grilled bread was also really good. One suggestion for Haley is that the next time she is serving a table with 15 people that she puts a separate basket of bread on both ends of the table so that people aren't having to move the bread along from one end of the table to the next to ensure everyone can get one. We ordered a variety of dishes. We had ribeye, prime rib , and porterhouse steaks. We also had the salmon dish, tuna dish, and various appetizers and sides. Everyone that had the steak dishes truly enjoyed it. The crab dip and chips were also good; a couple people felt it could've used some more herbal seasoning but otherwise everyone enjoyed it. The salmon was seasoned perfectly, and cooked just right. Having brought in our own cake created an awesome experience for us to sing happy birthday to my mother and have an enjoyable and celebratory gathering. Being able to do this truly made our day and most importantly made my mom very happy. This was our very first time at this restaurant. Everyone had an enjoyable time during our visit. We will be back.

If you want a great steak in an old-fashioned steakhouse vibe, this is the place. I felt like I stepped back in time with the paneled walls, the simply lit dining room & the fresh salad bar. Cocktails were standard old style steakhouse drinks. Steaks were done to perfection, flavorful and tender. The grilled bread served with the pimento cheese appetizer was the perfect accompaniment and was deliciously addictive. Service was quick attentive and no- nonsense. I honestly had a better experience & a better steak here than at the much hyped steakhouse in town.

This was a nice experience dining at The Peddler. I came here for my birthday, and I will tell you, that it is not easy to get into. They wait can be a while, like 90+ minutes at times. They don't take reservations, or have a waitlist. But if you have a large party, around 10 or more people, then they are more willing to accommodate you in advance. The food was really good, and worth enjoying on multiple occasions. I really liked the server, and made good food recommendations. #515

Filet mignon and sweet potato

The Peddler Steak House is located in the Oak Park Shopping Center off Glenwood Ave. It is tucked away to the left side of the shopping plaza so you might not know that it is there. It felt like the restaurant was there before the rest of the shopping center. The shopping center has plenty of parking. Reservations are taken for groups of 8 or more so if your group is smaller you might have to wait for a table. We were a group of 11 and none of us had been to the Peddler Steak House before. The restaurant is on the dark side so the dining experience would have been better with more lighting so you don't need your phone flashlight to read the menu. The tables are closer together than I would have liked too. When you walk in there is a small dining room with the kitchen to your right and the bar to your left. Then there are smaller rooms and that is where my group was seated. Service was good here but slow so give yourself plenty of time here. I went with the Filet Mignon and sweet potato. The salad bar is also included with the meal. I don't like salad bars so would have preferred a side salad. The Filet Mignon was outstanding and one of the best I've had. The sweet potato was also good and came with a cup of cinnamon. I'd eat here again as the filet was delicious.

The service was good. Food was really well made and the servers were happy to tailor the dishes to our wants. The pimento cheese appetizer complimented the filet mignon entrè. We had crème brûlée for dessert, it was good and sweet. The atmosphere and vibe was very romantic.

Bourbon bread, pudding. Hands down one of the best desserts I've had in a long time.

We went with the Cajun wings and a seafood boil with king crab legs, shrimp, boiled eggs, potatoes, and corn. You can choose between different marinades and spice levels. We went with garlic butter and mild spice. I really wanted to try the shrimp fried rice but it was no longer available, I assume due to being sold out. Next time! Upon delivery, the food arrived very hot and smelled delicious. They ensure it's packaged so a leak doesn't occur. The wings were super crispy, flavorful, and delicious. The boil was a huge portion, truly fresh, flavorful, and delicious. You never know what you're going to get when you order seafood for delivery, but we were thoroughly impressed! The seafood boil and wings could feed two people I'd say. I can't wait to order again and absolutely will be. I will say the only downside is the price, it was about $160 for the boil and wings, but for a special occasion, absolutely worth it. I was debating between four and five stars but it was SO delicious and fresh, that I had to go with five.

Had the calamari as an appetizer, very chewy, I would not recommend. I really went for the crab broil. Mine had, crab legs, shrimp, potatoes, corn and sausage, everything was cooked well. I went with the Big Bang sauce, mild which includes Cajun, garlic and lemon pepper. It is salty. Overall, it was a solid broil for the price. I went in early on a Friday, service was quick and friendly. Dim lighting and cool upbeat music.

We started with 3 dozen Daily Happy Oysters, which at $9 per half dozen. The Southern Salt oysters were incredibly briny. I don't mind a salty oyster, but these crossed into overwhelmingly salty territory and masked some of the nuanced flavors I usually look for. The snacks, however, were absolutely spot on. The Crawfish Hushpuppies arrived piping hot with a crisp exterior and tender center, loaded with crawfish flavor. The Crispy Frog Legs were equally impressive--perfectly fried, wonderfully seasoned with tom yum spice and vadouvan, and paired with a Vietnamese mayo that tied everything together beautifully. To wash it all down, we enjoyed a few beers, including a crisp pilsner, a refreshing wheat beer, and a local IPA that paired nicely with the oysters and fried snacks. Service deserves a special mention. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable without being overbearing. They kept the oyster trays moving and made sure drinks never sat empty for long. Overall, St. Roch delivers a fun oyster bar experience with happy hour pricing, creative snacks, and top-notch service. If the Southern Salt oysters had been a little more balanced, this would have easily been a 5-star visit.
