When I saw PA Bakery advertising mini King Cakes for Mardi Gras, I was genuinely thrilled. A reasonably sized King Cake felt like a dream come true -- all the fun of the tradition without committing to feeding an entire village. I immediately pre-ordered two mini King Cakes at $5.50 each (total $11), already imagining the moment I'd get to gloat when I found the hidden baby! The mini King Cakes were actually quite generous in size. Easily enough for 3-4 people...although I personally demolished mine in one sitting and have zero regrets. Now for the part that caught me off guard. The plastic baby -- arguably the entire point of a traditional King Cake -- was perched on top instead of hidden inside. I was fully anticipating that moment of excitement that comes from discovering the baby mid-bite, because that's kind of the magic of a King Cake tradition. Without that element, what I ended up with felt more like a very festive brioche-style cinnamon roll wearing Mardi Gras colors than a King Cake. To be clear, it tasted good. The cake itself was soft without being dry, had plenty of cinnamon-esque filling without tipping into overly gooey territory, and was generously finished with frosting and sugary crystals. Flavor-wise, no complaints. But if you're marketing something specifically as a King Cake, the expectation is that the baby is hidden within. Otherwise, it changes the experience entirely. For food safety purposes, there are plenty of creative alternatives -- an edible marzipan baby, a clearly oversized non-choking-hazard version, sticker on the box, etc. -- but the surprise element is part of what makes a King Cake a King Cake. Overall, not a bad experience -- just not quite the Mardi Gras moment I was hoping for. Next year, I'll probably seek out a bakery that leans into the full King Cake tradition...because if I'm chasing the thrill of finding a tiny plastic baby in my dessert, I want to earn that victory properly. If the baby isn't going in the cake, just let me know up front so I can manage my expectations (and my Mardi Gras excitement) accordingly. read more

The Pennsylvania Bakery is one of the few bakeries that are still around that offer everything imaginable as far as pastries cakes cookies in the list goes on and on and on. We stopped here yesterday to get some Christmas cookies and the reason why I'm only giving it four stars is because of the pricing , seems everything is a little on a higher side. They have an outstanding selection of all different types of Christmas cookies that you can pick from from the case and I do believe they were 24.95 a pound which seems a little high sorry. Everything is freshly prepared. The store is extremely cleaned, and the cases are filled with all kinds of goodies. Improve your website. I went to your website. I don't know how it is supposed to work. I ordered a cake with message and pie. It said the order was receives. I thought odd I didn't have to pay but hey, I didn't pick it up yet. Surprise. Day of pick up, no birthday cake. No pie. All ordered over 24h in advance. When I questioned, it was all my fault. I didn't confirm. No apology. No any thing one would expect from a reputable business. No response needed. My mother's 88th birthday will be celebrated just the same with no help from you. I am assuming the pastries are as good as they look but I guess I won't know since no one will wait on me. I have been standing at the register for 5 minutes while 4 people ignore me. One is cleaning a coffee pot and one is putting plastic on trays of pastries the other 2 are going beac and forth from the front of house to the back of house. I am pretty sure I am not invisible. Then the girl who was wrapping pastries proceeded to wait on the people who came in after us. This is not close to my home and I have to make a special effort to come here and I do occasionally because the pastries are very good but this is the worst customer service I have ever had here. I recently placed an order with The Pennsylvania Bakery, as I'm traveling to Georgia to see family this week. I ordered 2 large pecan sticky bun rings and peanut butter buns. Autumn was so nice and accommodating over the phone when I placed the order. I had asked that the sticky buns be wrapped so they stay fresh. Autumn assured me they would be baked the morning of pickup and wrapped for me for travel. Again, when my husband and I went to pick up the items today, everyone in the store was so nice and made sure we were being helped. My husband also purchased some Whoopie Pies. Completely disappointed. We would go to PA Bakery to get cakes and desserts for every special occasion. It was/is more expensive but the quality (creativeness, design, taste) were the best, so it felt like money well spent. My husband ordered a 1/2 sheet cake for our soon to be 5 year olds party. It's an astrobot theme and he gave them photos of what it was. We asked to include a photo on the cake. All they did was scan the stupid photo on the cake and ice around the seams of the photo. They couldn't even blend the edges in or cut the photo sheet closer to the image to make it look better... or dye the icing blue/purple and add glitter to make it look like a galaxy behind him? It doesn't even look like they tried. it looks like a grocery store cake for $112! I could've done better myself but never would've guessed they'd be proud to let this leave their store simply based on how great their cakes & designs were in the past. Hello, today I purchased a scone that has a bitter sour taste, it wasn't fresh, it was spoiled. Last month I purchased a chocolate chip loaf cake, I put it in the frig, next day it had mold on it. I do have pictures attached. And I did call to advise the manager to remove the scones from the case so no one else would buy them and be disappointed. This shop is just so over rated. We got a Black Forest cake......when order I asked for confirmation it was authentic German style Black Forest it was NOT! Very disappointing. The presentation of the pastries are what keeps this place going....the flavor of the treats is lacking to say the least. The customer service has all gone down hill, no apologies or anything offered when addressed. Great bakery with many options! For breakfast, they have unique breakfast sandwiches with things like pizza bread. Bagels and coffee are also available. They have unique bakes as well, some of the ones I have seen are: giant stuffed cookies, peanut butter cake shaped like a reeses cup, cupcakes decorated like characters, star wars cookies (May the 4th be with you). Some classics I recommend are: carrot cake and the fruit tart. If you want to try multiple things, they have an option for a dozen mini pastries where you can try multiple things. read more

I used to come here with my friend 7 or 8 years ago when I still lived in the area. It used to be AMAZING! A local favorite. Last year, my friend bought a ton of sugar cookies with buttercream for my daughter and they were absolutely wonderful. I'm not sure if they're under new management, but the quality has gone WAY downhill. We traveled to the area to visit family and bought several sugar cookies for my daughter, to include the watermelon one pictured. It was covered in white chocolate(?) And the sprinkles are buttercream. It looked like they brushed food coloring on the actual cookie... We ordered several other cookies and they were all dry and not flavorful. I was super excited to try a lemon one and, much to my surprise, it didn't taste at all like lemon. My boyfriend and I bring his daughter here often because she loves picking out a cupcake. Their cupcakes and cakes are very nicely decorated but just average tasting. Not bad, but they look much better than they taste. There are a few items that I've had that were pretty good and I've enjoyed. We got some treats here today and they were overall pretty great. The appearance of the place is absolutely darling and very beautiful. They had an extremely large selection especially considering the fact us was 30 minutes before closing. The customer service was good. The Cookie Monster decorated cookie was 4/5, it was good tasting but the cookie was kinda hard. It was super cute though. The pistachio macron tasted nothing like pistachio but lucky it was decent 3/5. The strawberry shortcake was 4/5 it wasn't as sweet as I am used to but it was good. The cupcake was alright tasting but the texture was amazing. It was a very moist cupcake 4/5. I recommend giving this place a shot.we got two other things but didn't try them yet. I absolutely love PA Bakery. I order all my cakes for events with them. Price is on the higher end but in my opinion it's 100% worth it for what you get. They are always a hit at my events, birthdays & holidays. Staff is friendly and always ready to help. Even did last minute orders. Recommend them to everyone and take menus home to give out. I also order these for company events as well. They exceed my expectations every time. While I've never actually been to The Pennsylvania Bakery, a relative of mine recently brought an assort of parties and desserts from here to my bridal shower. I've never been one for cannolis but OMG these were the best I've ever had. I'm not kidding I think I had at least five of them. There were so many different types of danishes, cream puffs and more. Everything was gone after the bridal shower! Overall, if I'm ever in the Camp Hill area, I'll definitely be stopping by this spot. Especially to get more cannolis lol. read more

My favorite Bakery in Central PA. All the sweets you can think of. The place is always busy especially during holidays. But they have a ticket system that expedites the customer service process. This is my go to place for birthday cakes for my Mom and also mini sweets to satisfy my sugar cravings. Parking can be a little tight which is located in the front (but technically it's the side ) of the bakery. There is an overflow lot as well but finding a space to park is hit or miss. Everything is reasonably priced in my opinion. I would definitely recommend for last minute cake purchases. We get PA Bakery goodies a few times a year and they never disappoint. This trip I picked up a cake and cupcakes for my daughters strawberry themed birthday. They were delicious! All our family was so excited once they found out the cake was from PA Bakery they always have a wide selection of sweets in their case (pictured). My husband is obsessed with their stuffed cookies which way about a pound each. I find them too sweet but he loves them. Back to this visit. I did not plan ahead and was able to order my cake and 24 cupcakes with two days notice and they were delicious. I ordered basics since this was a first birthday so I did a yellow cake with vanilla buttercream and then 12 chocolate and 12 yellow cupcakes with the same icing. Were they kinda pricey (72 for cake and cupcakes together) maybe. But so very worth it. The quality is far better than Giant or Weis. I used to make all my own cakes and cupcakes but it became far too stressful. I also ordered from PA Bakery last year for my oldest daughters Vampirina birthday and I was blow away by what they created. Highly recommend for themed/fondant items. Parking was ridiculous when we picked up our items which was a Saturday afternoon. We couldn't park in the lot or the adjacent lot. I had to park on the street up a block so be aware of that when you plan your visit. read more

I called to order a cake for my daughter's birthday and I sent an email with the image and date that I needed it by within the required 48 hour timeframe. I was unaware that I needed to call them back to place the order and they let my email sit in their mail box for days until the day I was expecting the cake. If anyone is placing a customized order, HOUND THEM and make sure they UNDERSTAND AND COMPREHEND that they have a cake order with descriptions sitting in the mail box that apparently has multiple viewer access but not one of them can communicate efficiently with each other. And it's not like the subject of my email had the exact date included at all, so they basically just ignored it. I recommend going somewhere else that actually cares enough about making their customer's orders. Don't waste your time with this place like they wasted mine. read more

I used to love the PA bakery - their customer service was great and I could guarantee what I ordered is what I would receive. Yummy, tasty, beautifully made desserts. The last few times I ordered cakes for my family and self my order wasn't correct and nothing was ever done to correct the issue. Most recently I ordered a cake for my birthday - giving PA Bakery one last chance to get things right. To my disappointment, my order wasn't correct and things were missing. To add insult to injury I was double charged. While I did receive my money back not even a single apology was given. Lastly I kept my cake refrigerated until 10 minutes before we cut it . As we were eating the cake and celebrating I went to get more cake for my family to take home and it had slid apart ruining my cake. I was never told to keep the cake refrigerated or how to care for my cake. The icing wasn't as I ordered and there was no glitter as I specified. So many yummy goodies!!! This was my first visit and it was overwhelming to say the least! They had cases filled with cookies, cupcakes, cakes and other sweet treats. I settled on a fruit tart (my fave), a mini tiramisu and a decorated cupcake. Ok, so good news first or bad news?? I'll start with the good--the fruit tart was yummy! Fruit was fresh and sweet and the "custard" was perfect. BAD-- the tiramisu had no flavor. NONE. None of that coffee flavor you expect. ZERO. And it tasted a bit stale. Worst I ever had and I was really disappointed. The cupcake was just ok. In my opinion cupcakes I've bought in grocery stores have been better. It's a cute place though, very open and roomy. Staff wasn't rude but they weren't overly friendly either. They also serve coffee, which I didn't see until I was checking out, but they seem to have a good selection. Ultimately, I MIGHT return? Meh. I was overwhelmed by line to get in, the beautiful building and massive array of sweet treats, yet underwhelmed with the taste. Bread pudding? Meh. Sugar cookies? Meh. Cinnamon bun? Meh. Almond cookie? Not bad at all...actually pretty good! But when I can only say pretty good about one item in a $40+ order, that's not a good thing. It was my boyfriend's birthday and tradition is i get him a cheesecake or a few flavors that make up a "cake". It's his favorite dessert. He just moved to harrisburg and I was not privy to the best cheesecake spot in the area so I opted to purchase from 3 different places and have a fun taste test or cheesecake roulette game. Food: i ordered 3 slices (red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, a almost flavored one i can't remember). Slices were not the best cheesecake I've ever had. They were just okay. Texture was not as creamy as I am used to or prefer. The nut flavor one tasted a tad bit stale. The best was probably the white chocolate and red velvet was not big on flavor. I may revisit to try other desserts and update my review but nothing else caught my eye. Price: for the size of the slices i don't think they were worth the price esp for the lack in flavor. Service: convenient parking lot. When you walk in you take a number to be serviced. Numbers were called pretty quickly (many people walking in and out). Service was very efficient and friendly. The packaging was cute and presentable. Ambiance: the shop is very cute and clean. I do not think I've ever had anything bad here! This place had such a huge selection of baked goods, I actually lived in the area my whole life and just went for the first time 2 years ago! Wow, what was I missing?! You may not know but they make some of the BEST breakfast sammies!! I've gotten two already and they were both to die for. They also make really good coffee drinks. I recommend trying a breakfast sammie and coffee next time. It does get very busy so go early or on a weekday. Some prices of the baked goods are expensive but for the most part fairly priced. If you had asked me a year ago to review this business, I would happily have given it . Unfortunately, things have gone downhill in the past year. We've frequented this business for every family birthday and celebration for the last 5+ years. We've even just come as a fun family treat. We have overlooked issues with soggy strawberries and a cake that looked like the crypt-keeper wrote "Happy Birthday". After this week though, we likely won't ever be back. My child specifically requests strawberry shortcake for her birthday (at least for the last four years). I called first thing Monday morning to order as the business was closed all of the previous week for a well-deserved vacation. I specified the cake to say "Happy Nth Birthday, [name]". The person talking our order confirmed with me that we wanted a strawberry shortcake with this message. I even told her that my child hated the strawberry torte and would not eat it because of the custard. Fast forward to the next day... We pick up the cake and other goodies. My child was thrilled! It's their birthday and they are getting their favorite cake that they get once a year. We view the cake, which mysteriously is missing the word "birthday", but everything else seems okay so we let it slide and head home. Unfortunately, this did not end the way we would have wanted. During the 30+ minute ride home, said child looks at the receipt and notices it says torte. We reach home and I call the bakery to find out they gave us a torte, the dessert my child hates. Happy Birthday, kid! Now you don't get a birthday cake at all! No worries. There are no managers available in the afternoon and no one can make any decisions. After many tears (and not just my child), my child decides they still want a birthday cake and I am told to pick it up after noon on the day after their birthday. Mind you, let's remember that there is no management on site after in the afternoon. I'm told on the phone that a manager will be available when I arrive and a new cake will be available with the correct message. I arrive. No manager. I overhear the dark, squat, curly haired individual who I'm nearly 98% sure took my order over the phone call the manager after I requested them to make this right because it was their error, my child did not get a birthday cake on her birthday, and I had to spend over two hours out of my way going to get cakes because they can't take a simple order and execute. She keeps telling the manager that I am telling, which I was not. There is a difference between talking firmly and yelling. Not to mention, said individual and her coworkers laughed at me when I told them this was all my child was looking forward to for their birthday. I'm sorry. My child only wanted this cake. She didn't care what else happened. They also implied that I ordered incorrectly. Why would I order a cake my kid hates? I ordered over the phone so never saw what they wrote on the order. They repeatedly told me the correct order and still messed it all up. They kept saying they were human, but laughed in my face and minimized my child's feelings. In the end, they were extremely unprofessional and after all this time, we will be going elsewhere. I highly recommend anywhere but here. Even the bakery at Giant has better customer service!
