A night in Kaka'ako is always a fun place to explore, and just be entertained!…read more The Honolulu Night Market at Our Kaka'ako is indeed a fabulous adventure into the biggest street/block party filled to the brim with all things local...food, retail and culture. I've been to so many and each and every one is very unique where you can find either fashion runway stage, live street art, or even a dance night in the barn. I just love the vibe SALT and surrounding Our Kaka'ako brings with the vibrant art we're so blessed to have and this particular night (November 19th) there was actually much more shopping just perfect for the holidays and the party went further down to Ya-ya's. Tonight I was fortunate to have gone after work so I kept it short but found some awesome treats. Some straw toppers to add to my holiday gift giving and some cheesecake cups (OG, Strawberry and Cookie Butter) of course I got one of each to share...ate the Strawberry which of course omg was yummy!! Not too sweet as the Strawberries was just perfect as I tried to get an even scoop of it all in every bite. Walked further down and honestly wasn't in the mood to wait too long for anything found something that would just exactly work for me. Ya-Ya's Chophouse & Seafood and tonight they had two items - Steak Kebabs - Fat Fried Rice with TAB (aka Thick Ass Bacon lol!) I seriously wanted the fried rice but thought that the Steak Kebabs was more sensible for me personally and it came with two kebabs each fully loaded with steak, mushrooms, peppers and onions with a huge scoop of rice! So many options I really was considering including Henna from Henna Happens, Birria Tacos from Dolce Vita, Corn from Corn Onoz Hawaii but though there's always a next time yes!?! I remember pre-pandemic Yelp had a booth here and hoping as things return to normalcy that we'll see it back again one day (hint hint!) Absolutely love this Honolulu Night Market as it offers so many cultural coolness that you can't find anywhere else! Thank you!

There was some live music, but it seemed more like a quick stop for tourists rather than a real night market. I didn't try any food because the atmosphere wasn't appealing, so I left quickly.

However, be prepared to pay more than what you'd expect as other reviewers had pointed out - the prices are high for what these items really should cost, which sucks, but I believe there is a reason(s) for this. I purchased a small plush keychain, a tee, a magnet and a sticker and the cost was just over $90 - the cost of the tee surprised me the most as it's $55 and I was expecting this to be more in the $40-$45 range. The store is on the smaller side and even on a weekday afternoon after 3pm, it was packed. It's located at the end of the row of stores, adjacent to the side of the Royal Hawaiian where the Sheraton is. Staff at the store were nice and helpful with any questions that I had. Besides the plushies, they had a great selection of stickers as well as magnets and keychains. For decades, I was aware of how popular Miffy has been in Japan (my cousin in Japan had Miffy items since the 90's), but for the U.S., I feel it has become increasingly popular within the last 2-4 years or so. I'm not sure if it's possibly because the creator, Dick Bruna had passed away in 2017 and since then, licensing and the creation of more Miffy merch and collabs may have become more easier to come out with, at least that's been the speculation. Although I'm generally not a fan at all of Hello Kitty or Sanrio, nor do I particularly like rabbits, there is something about Miffy that does appeal to me more than Sanrio characters - likely the simple design and neutral expression on Miffy and that it came before Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty and its European vibes. Before this, I'd ordered a plush Miffy keychain from the Kira online shop in SF. The keychain ended up being much bigger than expected for me to place on a bag/backpack so I decided that I'd stop by this store during my few days in HI to see if I can find a smaller keychain and maybe a tee as I heard this is currently one of only two Miffy themed stores in the U.S., the other being Miffytown in Kentucky. If you're in Honolulu and are a fan of Miffy, then this is worth checking out.

On the first floor, you will find quite a few small boutiques that carry some awesome items. Some standout shops include Salvage Public (which is a Kanaka Maoli-owned apparel store), Shop Keiko (which carries some exclusive Active by Teal pieces in addition to jewelry and Port + Paws items), Yireh x Mahinamade (more apparel including popular lei shirts in addition to dresses, aloha shirts, and more Active by Teal pieces), BikiniBird, and House of Mana Up (which carries a variety of stock including food stuffs, beauty products, dog treats, clothing, and bags all from local brands). You might find that some of the products are on the pricier end, but in my opinion the value is worth it because you are supporting local businesses and the quality of most pieces is excellent. Also connected to the shopping center are Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf as well as the best TJ Maxx I've ever been to and a 2-floor Nordstrom Rack where I've had a lot of success finding brand name items and great prices. I have never had an issue with service at South Shore Market; everyone is so kind and helpful that it makes the shopping experience even that much better. If you are looking for a more chill, relaxed shopping experience compared to Ala Moana, then South Shore Market is the place for you!
