Well, this place is really quite difficult to rate. It's a unique experience if you've never…read moresampled what is described as authentic Russian food. I've never been to Russia, so I can't vouch. The owner is quite proud of her creation and it's a fun adventure. Still, very pricey, things do take awhile to appear, and I believe that finer food can be found around town. Super interesting atmosphere and her care with her guests is lovely. Super cool atmosphere, with elegant china, booth seating, red leather couches, prominent bar, artwork. Almost David Lynch like in feel. I learned that true Vodka is flavorless. I didn't sample the $40 martini, but I heard it was nice. The beverages are very Russian and wines are only by the bottle, so just keep that in mind if you are just two. The caviar is beautifully served, described, subtly floured, and expensive. The borsch is very tart, chunky. Interesting, but you really need to like beets. The foie Gras is decadent and expensive I had the salmon in the puff pastry. Interesting flavors, especially the sauce, but I think I'm so used to cleaner food preparations that the combination didn't bring wild delight (and this was also $59). Other half tried the stroganoff, not on noodles apparently the more traditional style with a side of grains and small taste of a cabbage dish. According to our host, Russians do not eat as much vegetables and salads. I guess I'm too used to the American version as the flavors were odd to me. For me, not the finest meal in town and definitely one of the most expensive. Honestly, I think the better choice for the experience would have been just the vodka and caviar. Of course, not an option if you do not drink alcohol Reservations are a must on Open Table, but the availability can be deceptive. I think the open nights are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, starting at 6 p.m.

Golden Boar is a Ukrainian restaurant in the Huntingdon Valley Marketplace shopping center. From…read morethe outside, it may look like a regular strip mall restaurant. But inside is something really special. In my experience, it isn't very easy to find Ukrainian restaurants in the U.S. (certainly several in New York), and so I was thrilled to find Golden Boar. And it lived up to all my hopes and expectations. First of all - strip mall from the front, but it's all charm and coziness inside. The decor includes lots of photographs and beautiful table coverings - but the highlight of the interior is their play on the Ukrainian Pich (stove). What looks like a beautiful, traditional Pich is an opening and passthrough to the kitchen. It adds such charm and character to the space. But onto the food. I happen to love Ukrainian food, so we were excited and hungry and knew we would order too much food and have leftovers for later. We ordered and shared: Yushka (a porcini mushroom broth served with mushroom dumplings and a huge chicken meatball) with a garlic bun on the side on the recommendation of our server; Huliash (stewed beef with potato dumplings, and prunes); herring (with egg salad, boiled beet, and onions); and potato and cheese varenyky with cracklings). I would order and eat every bite again. And I wish I'd had more room to finish our plates and order a dessert! (Looking back, we should have brought friends with us just so we could order and share more of the menu)! The staff are friendly, and the service was wonderful and fast. Just a really wonderful meal that I'd be happy to repeat in the future! I think it's really special.

Almost gave it three stars because of being rushed to finish our appetizers but more on that later…read more The outside of the restaurant isn't all that special looking, in fact one in our party walked right past while looking for it! Once inside, the feeling was a lot better. Not much in the way of art work on the walls, but still had a nice warm feeling. There were 3 of us and we did a lot of sharing. The Scallops in Shredded Filo was good but the Crab & Artichoke, with garlic aioli, parsley and capers was definitely "the winner". The Seafood Ceviche with scallops, halibut and shrimp was also delicious. While 2 of us were still enjoying our appetizers, our entrees were brought to the table and our plates moved to make room for them. I made the comment to no one in particular that I would try to eat faster as the seafood ceviche was pushed off to the side of the table. We had a 7 pm reservation and for the most part the restaurant was full by that time but we were not intentionally eating slowly. I could see if we might be taking up too much time eating and they had to move the tables but that was not the case as the restaurant was only half full by the time we left. For an establishment that is charging the prices that it is, Avg $18 for appetizers, high $30s for entrees, no one wants to feel rushed. The Halibut Almondine with Beurre Blank was good but not as good as we had hoped, with it being on the dry-side. The Dorado with Baby Vegetables was delicious as well as beautifully presented with "potato fish scales". A shared warm Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream completed our meal. Their menu is extensive making it an easy decision to return but I will mention that we would like a more leisurely experience this time around.
