DARN GOOD BBQ FOR NORTHERN MN This unpretentious cute bbq restauant is perfect for it's location. Situated in Walker MN close to Leech Lake, it is in the heart of tourist land. Parking can be difficult, but worth the walk if needed. The outdoor patio is partially covered, and the focal point is this huge chunk of GRANITE that has a gas fire pit in the middle of it. Very Cool! The menu: On site smoked everything. You get several options here, I really like that. There is a combo platter that feeds 2-4 ppl with ribs, pulled pork, brisket, turkey, andouille sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, AND cornbread with corn kernels! All served on a foil covered quarter sheet pan OR, you can build your own plate, and only pay for what you order, ala cart. BOOM! Their house piggy bbq sauce is wonderfully sweet. The other choice is GHOST PEPPER bbq sauce, or the meat is so good it can stand on it's own. There are a couple salads and appetizers to choose from too. Expect solid, good food, casually served, in a laid back atmosphere. Personally, I can't handle real spicy foods anymore, but my tablemates could! I tried one little slice of the andouille sausage and my mouth was on fire. One gal at my table had the sausage with the ghost pepper sauce on it, and claimed it to be "just a little Hot, with a little kick". I swear I saw smoke coming out of her ears!! Neat place but the food was very disappointing. We ordered the large platter for $59. I would maybe consider it worth $30. The best part was the Mac and cheese. I should not go for BBQ and the best part was not meat. Food was like warm at best. The chips with sauce were good. We were very excited as the smells were amazing. Great experience! Went here because we tried the kettle chips once before a couple years ago but this time we decided to order a meal. Got seated right away outside and Briana was a great service. OINK indeed! We were major piggys at The Piggy in Walker, MN! We got up late on a Sunday morning and wanted some brunch, but by noon, there was no place that we found serving, so we roamed up and down the streets looking for something and stumbled about this cute little log cabin with the cutest piggy sign on the front and thought "hmm, if we can't do brunch, barbeque kind of sounds good!" And good it was indeed! You go in and order and all of their menu has been fresh smoked that day so they put your meal together sans the wonderful barbeque sauce, but they give you a good cup full of the sauce and then they put one of their bottles (which they actually sell as well) on the table and you can drown your pork or brisket or other meat in the stuff. Its seriously amazing sauce and I've had sauce around the country. Who knew Minneosta would be such a contender! They also have some good root beer on tap and the cole slaw ranks pretty high with me. We ended up enjoying our meal outside - there are some tables by the side of the building and if you roam there with your pooch, they'll give him a big bowl of water. At first glance, the place is very inviting from the outside and as you walk in you immediately feel like you're in a cozy log home. The husband and wife who own it are even more inviting and kind. Well, I'm from out of town so I tried everything - ribs, brisket, sausage, and they also had bent ends, so I tried them as well. As a side I chose the Mac & Cheese and cornbread. They also bring everyone chips when you first sit down. So I completely stuffed myself. The meal came out within 2 minutes of ordering I'm from Kansas City, which makes me feel like a bbq expert even if I'm not. This brisket was thick, juicy and full of flavor without any need of sauce at all. The ribs were the same. But I did try it with the Piggy BBQ sauce and can say that it has a great flavor as well. The sausage was great. The burnt ends were great too! I was surprised to find such a bbq gem here in the middle of nowhere. I think it competes with some of the best bbq I've had - which is saying a lot because I love bbq and I travel every week. The cornbread was pretty special too. They put honey on it at your request and it has a very distinct fluffy flavor and texture. I only tried it because one of the other people at the restaurant told me I absolutely had to. He was right. Stopped here with my family after reading the Yelp reviews and on a recommendation from a friend. Based on what has been said previously, I suspect our experience was not what people usually have. We are a family of six. Four kids aged 12 to six. When we first walked in we were greeted kind of coldly by the hostess. I suspect they may have been short staffed because our server, although very friendly, seemed a bit harried. A number of things were wrong with our order but it did kind of come out in the wash. Food we ordered but did not get was replaced by different food we did not order. I am bummed I did not get the beans though since I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw. I don't know how the BBQ tastes because I was turned away at the door. We were told there was nothing to eat unless we had made reservations. The dining area was almost empty. This was at 1:15pm on a Saturday during peak tourist season. I emailed the address on the extremely sparse website and received a reply the next day stating they like it that way. How far north can you go and still get great barbecue? I don't know if Walker is the limit, but this place has great barbecue! We were immediately greeted with a serving of kettle chips and received our drinks shortly thereafter. The chips were flavored well and substantial. My wife and I both remarked that they were an excellent appetizer. We both ordered the ribs. They were meaty, lightly smoked, still juicy and tender. It takes care to prepare ribs like this and they did an excellent job. I don't think that there was any dressing on the cole slaw. That may be a turn off for some but both of us remarked how it allowed the salad and the spices to be emphasized. It sure worked for us - we will try to replicate it at home. I remember eating ribs at the old Cottons BBQ in Robstown, Texas, and these were of the same quality. While they don't have the same extensive menu, what they do here they do well. read more

While not a big deal, I did notice they used cheap styrofoam plates and plastic flatware. We got the meat in a small paper cup, coleslaw in another cup, and a hamburger-type bun on the plate. I have a feeling that the owners may be writing the negative reviews in an effort to tame the amount of traffic this place gets. We arrived in town Saturday afternoon and stopped in without a reservation. The owner greeted us outside, explained that reservations are needed b/c they only cook so much meat per day and he was sold out for the day. Totally understand, no worries - we will make reservations and try again later in the week. He mentioned he was working on a private order, had some things cooking and proceeded to invite us in and he could cook something up for us - what a jerk! We went in, ordered drinks and meals that were served quickly and politely. They also had the audacity to give our children quarters to play the video games in the front room. The food... Don't even get me started on the delicious bbq that Jesus himself must have come down from heaven to bless. Brisket... Good. Ribs... Good. Pulled pork... Good.
