My partner and I had driven by this cafe a few times and could smell bacon all the way from the road. We were especially hungry while out running errands and stopped by to see if the cafe lived up the delicious smells. We were greeted and seated quickly. Service was quick and friendly. However, while sitting there looking at the menu we couldn't help but notice the insane amount of flies in the restaurant. Crawling all over the windows, mating, swarming the door. The bug catcher on The wall was clearly over full. So many flies that we considered leaving. But.. hunger won out, so we stayed. Between us we ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast, the southwestern Benedict and a side of bacon. The chicken fried steak was great with no gristle and very nicely seasoned. The country potatoes were dry, yet oily. The southwestern Benedict was good, but I would've liked a green Chile hollandaise instead of enchilada sauce. The biscuits and gravy were definitely good. 100% glad we got the side of bacon, it really made the meal worth it to me. Overall the place was decent, with good service and relatively tasty food. Oh My GOD! Was passing through town and ordered biscuits and gravy, a benny, and a cinnamon roll the size of a dinner plate! Everything was delicious! It's a great local place. Expect a short wait on summer weekends for breakfast/brunch. Worth the wait, the cooks do a great job and staff is friendly and fast. Destiny's hustle was impressive. I ordered the French toast and asked for strawberries that looked like they had been thawed out after being frozen a few years. We went here on our way into phoenix because of all the positive reviews. the customer service was great! Really nice people. I gave it two stars because the food was not as good as the reviews tell. We ordered pancakes for our girls and found the "butter" was some oily fake I don't even know what. the syrup was high fructose corn syrup with flavoring. my husband had a burger and he said it was very dry, over cooked and flavorless. the eggs seemed rubbery and my girls won't touch them. the home fries were over cooked and black and hard. I ordered the tuna melt and it was the only good thing we liked. my husband, two girls and I shared the one sandwich because we were all so hungry and it was really the only edible meal we got. If you need to stop here order the tuna melt. it's the only way to go. otherwise you will leave hungry. the place was clean and the people were very nice. read more

This place leaves a lot to be desired. There is simply nothing here that is natural. You have to ask for butter. The potatoes are preprepared. The meatball comes from a restaurant supply chain and the corn beef hash as well. The lady was nice but anxious to see us in and out. She watched our plates and moved them instantly. The place was not busy at all. The bathroom was cold. The water was freezing could not even wash my hands. The restaurant was cold. Nothing hospitable really or warm. The biscuit and gravy were good. I grew up coming here starting 48 years ago when it was the knotty pine. I left az for several years and when I moved back I moved to payson. I'd heard that the place had gone downhill so I'm glad I decided to go back anyway. I had the green chili omelette with home fries bacon and a biscuit with country gravy. Needless to say the portions were so big I took half the omelette and home fries and all of the biscuit and gravy home and had it for dinner! My husband enjoyed his giant pancakes and his runny (barf lol) eggs and bacon. Also their coffee is really really good, I had two cups! I took my dad there when he came up for a visit and he and I split the green chili omelette and French toast. And THAT was the bomb! I don't like cinnamon but I usually forget to ask if they put that in, THEY DIDN'T! The Pinon aka the knotty pine is some place I look forward to taking my kids when they come to visit! Went for breakfast. Just day-tripping from Phoenix. This is a family run cafe, friendly, quick staff. We ordered the 'special' which was chicken-fried steak, eggs, potatoes, and a pancake. The chicken fried steak was very good, light crunchy crust, not soggy or greasy (had the gravy on the side which helped the crunchy crust). Pancake was light & fluffy. Definitely enough food to share. Easy on the wallet. Restrooms clean. Bottom line, would I return? Definitely yes. read more

We stopped here on our way home from camping for what we thought would be some amazing Mom & Pop breakfast turned into a 2 hour trip and our food completely wrong. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait, they were super busy but we waited ended up being 45 minutes, we were then just told "your tables over there" with a point in the direction of a wall. After figuring out what table was ours we continued to sit for 10 minutes waiting for a menu and a server or someone to acknowledge we had been there. We finally had a lady bring us menus and take our drinks then disappear. We waited another 15 minutes before a different lady came and took our order after explaining there was a big table in the back. She took out order and we asked for a kids grilled cheese, I ordered and in formed them I am SEVERELY allergic to eggs and ordered a breakfast burrito with just bacon cheese potatoes and peppers. First they brought my nephew a cheese crisp (we ordered a grilled cheese) the server apologized and said the kitchen messed up, no big deal they where gonna fix it. Then my burrito is brought out, had my husband not been paying attention as soon as it was I would have taken a big old bite of an egg filled burrito. The server apologized again said the kitchen messed up and had them remake it. It was finally after 10 minutes brought back SOAKED in oil (like my plate looked like someone just poured half a bottle of oil on it) I picked it up and my hand was instantly covered. Server apologized again I told her I didn't want anything else (I was beyond frustrated at this point as we had been waiting so long everyone was just about done eating we had already been there almost an 2 hours) my sister also found a piece of hair in her potato's. I ate a piece of my husbands toast while the cook who made my burrito started yelling thru the window asking how my burrito was I ignored it the server stepped in and said "she didn't like it" my husbands country fried steak was very good the server seemed to care and was apologetic enough to cover our entire check due to all the mishaps. I'm only giving it 2 stars instead of 1 bc of the server, the kitchen nearly killed me due to not reading the ticket. read more

Great place for breakfast when in Payson! We ate here 4 of the 5 days we were in Payson because it was delicious food and truly had the small town feel we expected from a restaurant in Payson. Pinon Cafe was very busy but the wait was about 15 minutes or less each day. I do wish they had some benches for when customers need to wait outside for a table. The waiting area inside was way to claustrophobic to stay in when there were more people than us waiting to be seated. One of the days we were there a couple came in with a very naughty child that kept hitting/kicking the glass windows "and us" because it was a very small space. The staff got our orders correct the first time and provided polite and friendly conversations when they visited our table to check to make sure we had what we needed. We had no complaints on any of our visits and we will be back again. Thank you for a great breakfast! read more

We were looking for a local breakfast on our way through town when we turned into the Piñon Cafe. We weren't disappointed. The food was excellent. Beware the tasty 3-pancake stack. Those things are huge! The service was even better. Shawna and the rest of the staff were fast, courteous and welcoming. As it turned out, we caused a flat tire after clipping a curb on the way in. Stayed the night at the Majestic Mountain Inn (highly recommend) and ate here in the morning. Atmosphere is FANTASTIC! Definitely a small town cafe feel and as someone said in another review, watching the locals interact was a treat. I got the "rancher", one egg and a 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were huge, seriously huge, and there was plenty of gravy! Unfortunately, the scrambled egg was strange: dry and smashed down flat. I wouldn't order scrambled eggs there again. Our coffee was good and the toast for our toddler was perfect, though. We'll go back! read more

Hubby and I stopped here on our way out of town. Although the parking lot was packed, we were seated within a few minutes. Staff was attentive and quick. I had the California omelette, avocado, bacon, and salsa. I had hash browns and a biscuit as well. Safety tip, make sure you're really hungry! The Omelette was fantastic; bacon all the way through and on top, slices of avocado, and a nice spicy salsa to go with. Hash browns were cooked perfectly; crispy and crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The biscuit was as big as my fist, but I had a really hard time not eating the whole thing because it tasted so yummy. Hubby had the redneck Bene, eggs over easy with sausage patties, biscuits and gravy, hash browns. He is a hash brown snob, but he absolutely loved these. Prices were quite reasonable for the portion sizes. We would definitely stop here anytime we're in town. read more
