The Fried Stuffed Avocado exterior cracking open to reveal what's beyond the shell.
    Valerie M.

I'm ba aack! After the last visit I was set on coming back this trip. Hit Cavenders to check out the boots and Western attire and immediately cruised down here for a somewhat early dinner. A basket filled with warm, thin crispy tortilla chips and a small molcajete' filled with a chilled, blended salsa. Chips and salsa so fresh and flavorful, I've made a noticeable dent. I know my appetite is going to suffer, but my dinner arrives and I'm prepared to give it my best. I ordered the two item combinations that comes with two sides. Avocado Tostada, Stuffed Fried Avocado, Refried Beans and Mixed Veggies my two sides. The Tostada was different from what I expected. Tortilla shell, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, cheese. I thought it would be refried beans on top the shell with sliced avocados in place of meat. It was good! The Stuffed Avocado was a good size. Okay, it was bigger than I would've wished for. Somewhat like a Chile Relleño using Avocado, filled with Fajita meat -choice of chicken or beef, and cheese, battered and then deep fried. The crust a little more grainy, like maybe it's made with cornmeal. I was STUFFED. Could only eat a little of my Brocolli, Carrots, and Green Beans veggie mix or Refried Beans. Wish someone was dining with me so I could have a bit of dessert. Service was fantastic. My sweet server gave me a reasonable period of time to review the menu. When she came back to take my order she answered my questions, made sure I was ready "because it's a big menu", told me my options, and confirmed my selections. Between ordering and the arrival of my entree she checked on me to make sure I was doing alright. She didn't hover, nor did she pop by when I was putting a bite in my mouth or trying to chew my food. Once I finally pushed my plate aside, had a to go box delivered, inquired about the batter on Avocado and pronunciation of Relleno she asked if I wanted dessert. She even suggested I could take some to go. LoL! OMG, no, but thank you for asking. THEN, I find out she's the same server we had the last time we dined here. I don't want you to ask for Socorro because I want her to be my/our server when I come back again.

The food was ok. The service was actually slow. The margaritas were way too sweet. but over all great place to eat for Tex Mex.

Passing through Amarillo and we found this little gem! Well the restaurant is pretty large with 3 dining rooms I believe and a bar in the center. Our waitress was a super sweet girl , I wish I could remember her name, young with glasses. Anyway she was terrific! Very attentive for a busy night. The guacamole was delicious, the salsa lacked flavors, tasted like tomato sauce, chips were crispy and fresh. My husband ordered the beef fajitas and really enjoyed them...he ate 3!!! Homemade flour tortillas really made the dish. All the accoutrements looked good and the plate came sizzling as you should expect! I ordered the flat or stacked enchiladas and they did not disappoint! Just like I make them and they were delicious!! Their beans and rice were equally delicious! I would definitely stop here again!

Passing through Amarillo, the Plaza was near my hotel so we tried it out. The Plaza is a large, busy, popular restaurant. With reasonably priced food, served hot and tasty, it is easy to see why. Top Shelf Margarita was delicious and priced right. The combo of tacos and beef brisket were very good. Rice and beans perfect. Excellent, efficient service with a smile. Does get loud in the evening.

Service was excellent. Authentic like decor. Food was excellent. I had crispy chile relleno and husband had enchiladas. Great happy hour margarita and husband had cold Modelo Negra in an iced mug!

There were two other tables with two people each that left shortly after my table of three arrived. Ordered our drinks and it took 57 minutes to get them. The bartender actually noticed that we had been sitting there without anything and he brought them over even though he was not our server. Our server did not understand English, and we kept having to use our phones to translate so we could communicate with her. We asked for appetizers that we never got, yet were on the bill. Our food came out 98 minutes after arriving, and again the bartender was the one that was serving us. The female server sat at an empty table on her telephone the entire time. When I asked for the bill, she didn't understand me and had to get a coworker to actually print out our bill. I tipped-out the bartender because he's the one that actually provided us our service. When I checked my credit card statement the next day she had given herself a $10 tip even though I had lined through it on the receipt. I immediately called the Amarillo Police Department to file police a eport for theft, and I did a fraud against my credit card with my bank. I explained to the Amarillo Police Department what happened, and sent them copies of my receipt and the receipt that I had left for her. The APD attempted to contact Braceros management. Every time the detective called he was told that the manager was not in the office and that they did not know when he would be in the office. At my insistence, the detective went to Braceros and asked for the manager and watched the manager walk away and had his employees say that he was not available. Management was absolutely refusing to speak to the police. When APD asked the employee about my waitress, because her name was on my receipt, the Braceros employee said oh I don't know who that is. So the detectives couldn't even talk to the waitress. They sent the detectives two more times attempting to talk to management and they refused to talk to them. Another 1000% sure management is in on this scam. I filed a complaint with the local Chamber of Commerce and come to find out, Braceros is known for this and there are banks in the Amarillo area that will not honor any charges on their credit or debit cards at Braceros restaurants. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!

My girlfriend's mom was especially excited to take me to El Tejaven while I was visiting. This dinner was a celebration of my girlfriend's sister playing in the top All-Region orchestra. It has nothing to do with the food itself, but I want to mention it because she did a great job performing and I think it deserves to be remembered here. It is the reason we went in the first place. It was a busy night at El Tejaven before we arrived. A group of 32 was just wrapping up dinner. Thirty two people. At that point, just cater, dawg. It took about 20 minutes after arrival to get seated, but it likely would have been much quicker if it were not for a group that size. Once we were seated, we were served chips and salsa. The salsa was spicier than I was prepared for, but it was good. The chips were excellent as well. Most people at the table ordered margaritas on the rocks, while I got a dressed Dos Equis on draft. From what I tasted, the margaritas were solid. For appetizers, we ordered the small queso and the small ceviche. The queso was standard but good. The ceviche, on the other hand, was exceptional. I could have eaten a large bowl by myself. I was pretty hungry, so I ordered the Orden de Tacos, which comes with four tacos on corn tortillas. I got all of them with al pastor. I also added a side of rice and beans, which normally comes with the three taco order but can be added on for the four tacos. The tacos were very good and exactly what you want from street style al pastor, especially with the cilantro and onions. It comes out to roughly four dollars per taco if you do the math. The rice and beans were both great and I ate all of it easily. The plate also came with a side of guacamole that had a nice kick, which I enjoyed. Living in Austin with family in San Antonio, it is easy to find good and authentic Mexican food. That does not always seem to be the case in Amarillo, so it is nice to know there is at least one spot in the city that feels authentic and not overly gringoified. My girlfriend's family knows ball.
