I'm ba aack! After the last visit I was set on coming back this trip. Hit Cavenders to check out the boots and Western attire and immediately cruised down here for a somewhat early dinner. A basket filled with warm, thin crispy tortilla chips and a small molcajete' filled with a chilled, blended salsa. Chips and salsa so fresh and flavorful, I've made a noticeable dent. I know my appetite is going to suffer, but my dinner arrives and I'm prepared to give it my best. I ordered the two item combinations that comes with two sides. Avocado Tostada, Stuffed Fried Avocado, Refried Beans and Mixed Veggies my two sides. The Tostada was different from what I expected. Tortilla shell, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, cheese. I thought it would be refried beans on top the shell with sliced avocados in place of meat. It was good! The Stuffed Avocado was a good size. Okay, it was bigger than I would've wished for. Somewhat like a Chile Relleño using Avocado, filled with Fajita meat -choice of chicken or beef, and cheese, battered and then deep fried. The crust a little more grainy, like maybe it's made with cornmeal. I was STUFFED. Could only eat a little of my Brocolli, Carrots, and Green Beans veggie mix or Refried Beans. Wish someone was dining with me so I could have a bit of dessert. Service was fantastic. My sweet server gave me a reasonable period of time to review the menu. When she came back to take my order she answered my questions, made sure I was ready "because it's a big menu", told me my options, and confirmed my selections. Between ordering and the arrival of my entree she checked on me to make sure I was doing alright. She didn't hover, nor did she pop by when I was putting a bite in my mouth or trying to chew my food. Once I finally pushed my plate aside, had a to go box delivered, inquired about the batter on Avocado and pronunciation of Relleno she asked if I wanted dessert. She even suggested I could take some to go. LoL! OMG, no, but thank you for asking. THEN, I find out she's the same server we had the last time we dined here. Consistently great food and drinks. Usually has a waiting line but you get in quickly. The service is TOP NOTCH, meaning the staff know their jobs and do it well. Service was abysmal. We were with a group of thirty and had a reservation. I was told by the tour director the manager's name was Tony. We had one server. We should have another server. Passing through Amarillo and we found this little gem! Well the restaurant is pretty large with 3 dining rooms I believe and a bar in the center. Our waitress was a super sweet girl , I wish I could remember her name, young with glasses. Anyway she was terrific! Very attentive for a busy night. The guacamole was delicious, the salsa lacked flavors, tasted like tomato sauce, chips were crispy and fresh. My husband ordered the beef fajitas and really enjoyed them...he ate 3!!! Homemade flour tortillas really made the dish. All the accoutrements looked good and the plate came sizzling as you should expect! I ordered the flat or stacked enchiladas and they did not disappoint! Just like I make them and they were delicious!! Their beans and rice were equally delicious! Passing through Amarillo, the Plaza was near my hotel so we tried it out. The Plaza is a large, busy, popular restaurant. With reasonably priced food, served hot and tasty, it is easy to see why. Very pleasant surprise! Grew up in South Texas and lived in Mexico so had very low expectations for Mexican food in Amarillo. The Plaza was top notch. Chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. A couple years ago the staff was over working their employees and got in trouble but that's all changed. Passing through Amarillo. Close to a large group of hotels. Someone suggested this a good place. We ordered two margs on the rocks to start with. Very sweet, very weak on alcohol. We ordered specialties, the Tex Mex stir fry with beef and guisado with beef, chicken and shrimp. Interesting dish. The beef was very tough. Could not eat. The rest was good. The guisado was interesting. I've always had guisado as a stew. This was more of a mixture of meats and green peppers. Not a stew. The Mexican papas were mashed potatoes. Wait time was 45minutes and it was 90°F outside. We went back in after 15 minutes since there was plenty of space by the far left corner away from the host. WOW! From the first sip of my Mexican Candy Mule, I knew I was going to love the food too. You can always tell how good a restaurant is going to be by how good the cocktails are and Jose the bartenders makes amazing drinks! This restaurant is huge and Jose was making drinks like a mad man the entire time we were sitting at the bar eating our dinner never missing a beat. When Mexican restaurants have more than one type of salsa, especially if they have spicy salsa, I am super happy and they offered 2 types of spicy salsa - so good! My mom had the avocado stuffed Chile relleno and said it was the best Chile relleno she ever had. I had the cheese enchiladas one with spicy tomatillo sauce and one with jalapeño cream sauce and these were the best enchiladas I have ever had. I am definitely coming here the next time I am passing through Amarillo. read more

I had family in from Austin, TX and we decided to go to The Plaza on Soncy on 12/26/2022 as it has been one of our favorite restaurants since the mid-1990's when they were located at 34th & Bell Streets. But tonight, the service was horrible! We arrived and gave our name and cell number to the hostess and was told it would be a 35-to-45-minute wait. No worries, we would wait in the car and chat until we got the text message from the hostess' table app. After 45 minutes, my son went inside and the hostess could not find our reservation in her smartphone reservations app. He gave my name and cell number to the hostess again. I walked in after about 20 minutes to enquire again about our reservation. Again, she had no record of our reservation for 4. I asked if there was something that could be done to make this right and was told that we could be placed on the app for a third time and wait an additional 30 minutes. No way - we left. A pencil and paper would work better than that stupid smartphone app. read more

I went to the Plaza on the recommendation of someone that I know when I asked her what her favorite restaurant was. I thought to ask her what does she usually order that she likes the best and she said the crispy chile relleno so that's what I ordered and it was very good. So are the rice and beans that came with it and the guacamole salad. I would not hesitate to recommend this place and hope I get to go here again sometime before I leave town. Prices are not as cheap as a little taco shop certainly but I feel they give you a great value for the price and a good quantity as well as quality. The hostess young teen girl at the front was rude at telling us, not asking but telling us, that we could not be by the FAR corner (wearing our masks) or she even "smart ass mannered" said out loud or you need to wait in y'all a car! I'm like ahhh thanks for being a sweet heart and suggesting that to us. Bless your heart child! We left to eat elsewhere. We are in the middle of a pandemic and this heat is not gonna ruin my night! Not today not today. You would think they've 6months to prep for this new norm, and not invest in sun umbrellas, fans or shaded area. Stopped here for dinner last night. A lot of people waiting outside to get in which made us hopeful about the quality of the food. Was given a wait time of 30 minutes but we actually got seated in about 15 minutes. The Hostess and server were both delightful. The chips and salsa were very tasty. Light, crunchy chips and a generous portion of salsa that had a nice kick to it. Hubby had the shrimp enchiladas with cream sauce and he was happy with his order. I had the steak fajita enchiladas with the queso and they were just OK. The steak was tender but the queso resembled more of a Velvetta cheese sauce than a traditional queso. The refried beans were excellent. A little disappointing but overall not bad. read more

Ok, we thought, let's give it a whirl... *Slow service, we hadn't even gotten our food and the other 2 couples who came in just before and just after us were walking out *Had to ask someone else for water, our waitress was not to be found *Waitress was very scattered *lukewarm food, soggy hard shell tacos *Tough chicken( I even asked the waitress about what was better: chicken or beef, she said chicken ‍) *Mexican papas are just mashed potatoes The only TexMex option near our hotel. Was this is really a good representation of TexMex? I don't think so. I think I'd rather have Chipotle. Cadillac Margaritas were good, tho! read more
