We had the Plumbing Dr (I believe Stephen) come to our third story apartment on a Tuesday to replace two valves. One week later I was contacted by the tenant on the first story saying there was water in her unit and that the second story neighbors were out of town so she wasn't sure if there was damage there as well. In a panic I called the Plumbing Dr back to see if they could send someone out to take a look and Philip came out within 10 minutes. He found a very small leak due to their team not tightening the valves correctly. A small leak that wasn't discovered for a week turned into a bigger problem. He fixed the issue quickly. He also determined that there was no damage to the second story unit. We hoped that the first floor unit would dry out with no problem but the tenant called again today saying it wasn't drying properly. I've called the Plumbing Dr a couple times now hoping they could send someone with equipment to expedite the drying process so the water does not ruin the floors, mold, etc with no response so far. This has been a disappointing experience only slightly improved by Philips amazing response time and speed to fix the issue. Update: Philip worked really hard with us and the first story tenant to move furniture, bring fans an dehumidifiers, and dry the water damage. I heard today that the water is dry and there is no lasting damage. Thank you Philip for saving us from a crisis! read more

Be prepared to feel cornered for $$$. They were polite and punctual. They correctly diagnosed and resolved the issue. However, their payment set up made me feel like I had been fleeced. We had bought an old house and they did our sewers line inspection in August 2025. They said everything looked great. After that we had someone refinish our basement and another contractor redo our kitchen while we were living out of state. We moved into the home in June 2026 and soon after had flooding issues in our newly finished basement. It was obvious from the sequence of events the main sewer line was clogged. We even called the city to check if there was a downstream issue and there wasn't. The plumber came and after several calls to his supervisor agreed it was an issue with the main line. He then held out a tiered system that we had to agree to ahead of time and only the top 2 tiers actually promised to resolve the issue with a comprehensive scope and treatment would be a little over $3000 and come with an 18months assurance (this was not the highest tier). I don't remember the details of the tier below since they said I was forbid from taking a picture of the tiers and payment options but it left ambiguity to whether it would completely resolve the issue. I asked if I could discuss with my husband who wasn't home and he said that was fine but if he left the site he would have to charge me just for coming out even if I wanted them to scope later. So I asked him to step out and discussed with my husband. We tried to clarify if there were diagnostic and pay options and we were told we had to pick a tier. We felt kind of stuck because if there was horrible damage and we didn't agree to the comprehensive package we could be in it for so much more money and it honestly wasn't clear what that process would even look like. I asked if it meant anything to the plumber that his company had said things looked good less than a year before and he said old pipes can develop scales quickly and they didn't guarantee things if we didn't select a tier that would guarantee it. So I agreed and gave him half the payment (about $1500). He gave me a carbon copy saying the gist of what that "tier" selection had promised. No other real contract, just a carbon copy sheet. The next day he showed up with 2 other guys and scoped and found a rag and a plastic bag stuffed in the drain. Not his fault, likely one of the 2 companies that were renovating. Can't prove who. But it cost us a little over $3000 to have a rag and bag removed from the drain because we were cornered and given worst case scenarios the day before. None of this is exactly dishonest, and I'm sure if the problem had been worse with needing our sewer descaled or something we'd be so thankful, but it feels insane that I spent $3000 on that. I also have some anxiety that I have no typed contract that guarantees the 18months of assurance nor exactly understand what that includes... I think people should just be prepared that they will be put in this situation if they call with a flooding issue and to understand how much cash they will part with. read more

The Plumbing Dr. was excellent from start to finish. When I called the service line, I received an immediate window for same-day service in Alexandria, VA. The scheduling representative was incredibly pleasant; she carefully took down and confirmed all of our information and our plumbing issue. The plumbing technician (Owen) provided a courtesy call prior to arrival and he arrived at the beginning of the window that the scheduling representative gave me earlier in the day. Owen was respectful, professional, efficient, and knowledgable. He was considerate of our home and wore shoe protectors inside. He fixed our immediate issue and resolved several other contributing issues. He also identified other potential plumbing issues we could have in the future and provided an estimate for when we were ready to fix them. Overall, we paid less than we anticipated, and the price was 100% worth Owen's expertise and the efficient resolution of the issue. read more

Excellent across the board, which i honestly wasnt expecting as I discovered a leaking water pipe in a difficult basement area sandwiched between the floor joists and furnace duct work - over easter weekend. First surprise, i was scheduled immediately for Sat afternoon. Then Dr. Toney called me in the morning saying he can come several hours early. He did a complete analysis of the problem, and pointing out some other plumbing issues of concern in my 100 yr house - for me to think about down the line. He gave me exact estimate for the repair work in detail, with some options for additional issues - without any pressure. He then sunk into the repair work at hand which he completed in about an hour. I can tell he is highly trained and knew what he was doing. Given plumbing emergencies over a holiday weekend, where I wasn't sure what was going to be needed, I naturally feared pain was coming. but my experience from scheduling to expertise to transparency to work quality was anything but. The plumber was able to diagnose our issue (a leak in a pipe in our ceiling) but that was where the positive feedback ends. When I booked the appointment, they said "we will give you a 20 minute heads up when he's heading over. If it's within business hours, we will waive the service fee. If it's after business hours, you will be charged the fee." But I don't actually get a say on when they're coming so how am I supposed to know if I'm paying the fee or not? Am I also just supposed to wait at home all day for him to show up? Finally, when the guy was here, he said it'd be anywhere from $150 to $250 to diagnose the issue, and once he found it he seemed to just arbitrarily decide that is was $250. He said the fix of the issue would be $500. The next day, I had a different person come by who said it should have cost less than $100 for the diagnosis and would be $150 for the fix. I do not recommend the plumber Dr for these reasons. read more

This company will not provide any estimate (of any kind) until sending out a plumber who charges at least $68 for the visit. They also claim that a permit needs to be acquired in parallel with a water heater replacement, or any job that involves gas lines. This is simply not how most other companies operate and so there's too much competition to recommend this one. read more

This review is for Dr. William. Sunday during Labor Day weekend disaster struck my townhouse- my bathroom decided to flood my kitchen with black water. I was terribly upset as I had family in town visiting and didn't understand why water was flooding my cabinets. I called over a dozen plumbers in the DMV area and no one answered. I left messages and the Plumbing Dr was the only one to call me back. They were timely and professional and a rep was sent to my home within three hours. Dr. William was friendly and very professional. He explained the options well and clearly to me. I understood what the process was and didn't pressure me or try to upsell me. He replaced the wax ring, screws, cleaned the area, and replaced my flapper. He also taught me about cast iron plumbing and explained the pros and cons. I have already recommended the plumbing dr to two friends since then. The price was pretty steep but insurance should cover it I don't mind. Plus, it was a holiday weekend so I understand. I'm very grateful for their professionalism and promptness. Will contact for future plumbing needs. EDIT: had to knock off a star. The tub faucet and fixtures in my master bathroom were original from construction (2008) and through time and normal wear & tear, the tub faucet had been consistently leaking. I found The Plumbing Dr on the world's most powerful tool (Google) and called to schedule a service appointment. The company representative I spoke with was courteous, professional and responsive. A service call was scheduled for today (October16). The plumber (Mike) and his colleague (Cornelius) called me 15 minutes in advance (as promised) of their scheduled arrival time (12:00) and they arrived promptly on time. Mike explained the evaluation and repair process, so that my expectations were managed up front with full transparency, which I appreciated. Mike and Cornelius did a thorough inspection, determined a repair plan and clearly explained next steps and timelines. I asked if, as long as they were there, it made sense to go ahead and replace all the washers on all the faucets (bathrooms, kitchen) and after carefully inspecting all of them, Mike advised that they were all in good working order and it would be an unnecessary expense (which I also appreciated). Mike and Cornelius provided additional guidance for proactive care of my pipes in the master bathroom, once the repairs were completed, as a cost-saving measure. The service appointment was approximately 1.5 hours, start to finish. I found Mike to be very professional, highly competent and helpful. Cornelius was also very knowledgeable and helpful, as well. Of course, significant plumbing repairs are not cheap (oh the joys of home ownership!), but I believe the quality of the work and the service merits the cost, and the Plumbing Dr's rates and fees are competitive with other local plumbing companies. Mike (our lead technician) and Charlie (who assisted Mike) did a phenomenal job diagnosing the problem quickly, giving us our options and then executing the plan we chose. Without being prompted, Mike noticed I had served in the military and proceeded to give me a 10% Veteran's Discount, which I didn't know they had and he volunteered. Mike and Charlie also took a look at the caulking on the tub in our guest bathroom and replaced it. Again, GREAT customer service and professionalism. 11 Nov 23. Dr. Bill Bennet provided excellent services. He explained everything with me and provided price options from lowest to highest to get the job done. The house was built in 1973 so I have many old pipes. He came in, install the pipes required, ran a copper waterline with a shut off valve to my refrigerator (from downstairs to upstairs) so I can get my new refrigerator installed with my water and ice dispenser ready for activation. We had a leak in our garage. We called, Daniel who came out and told us it would cost several thousand dollars to fix. I asked if he could just stop the leak, and he said yes. The leak stopped for the moment, but about a week later, the leak started again. I called and asked for Daniel to come back out. He somehow became defensive, saying he never said the leak would stop. I asked what our $500 payment bought us. He said, I kid you not, "we protected the area with a tarp, walked around the building looking for the water shut off valve, then shut the water off when we found it." He was incredibly argumentative and insulting. UPDATE: Thank you for your response to my concern. How do you feel about the actions of your technician, Daniel? Dr. Toney explained the issue and laid out several options, from the immediate repair to a full scale operation - and all of it came in far less than I would have expected. We chose the best option for us and he set to work - the issue was a kitchen sink backing up into a basement sink - and with the questions Wendy had asked me on the phone, we had everything zeroed in and fixed quickly. Charged over $500 just to inspect and didn't fix anything. Just pulled the toilet and made an attempt to remove the clog with a snake outside in the front yard valve. Then told me that to really solve the problem they need to cut the line and it would cost $9000. Next day had Michael and sons come, they said we onlly charge 97 and not a penny more if they can't fix it. The next day a plumber from Michael and sons fixed it and remove the item in 10 minutes and we were back to normal. Ripped off by dr plumbing - $600 to inspect regardless if they fix, if they pull the toilet up and snake. M&S didn't do that. read more

I had a call to TPD 2 weeks ago...David came by and gave an assessment of my situation....and I was presented with all options to get my 2 stem control valves replaced, as they were leaking. Luckily it was a slow leak and i had no damage at all under my kitchen sink. I believe there were 4 or 5 options: ranging from just replace the 2 valves to replacing everything down there. Being the unit is still less than 2 years since I've moved here, I opted for the basic...remove/replace the valves. David had to come back a couple days later as we initially couldn't find where the water shut off valve was to my apt. Low and behold, it was in the master bedroom closet...go figure.... I recently called for a Saturday emergency. There was no answering service so I left a message about the issue and saying I was a former customer. Realizing this was not a good sign I called another company that had an answering service that did tell me they were too booked to come out that Sat. so I made a Monday apt. I have employed the plumbing doctor over the period of many years. In the past couple of weeks, I have had a very negative experience, and have not as yet decided whether to file a formal complaint with the Commonwealth Attorney General. I had a 10 year old American Standard pressure assisted toilet that began to run. I called the Plumbing Dr and called the company, explained my problem, and scheduled an appointment for a plumber. An individual named Matt arrived, said I should replace the toilet, that the Plumbing Dr only installs Gerber toilets. He said he would install an equivalent toilet that was the highest consumer rated. Since the toilet to be replaced was a grey colored toilet, he would have to special order it. When Matt arrived two weeks later, I let him in and he replaced the toilet. However, when I inspected it, it was a completely different model, a gravity toilet, though it was grey. Matt claimed that all the pressure assisted toilets had been recalled. After he left, I researched online and discovered that all manufacturers still offer pressure assisted toilets, that only some units had been recalled. I also discovered that all I needed to have done was have the Flushmate unit in the tank replaced. Replacing the toilet itself was entirely unnecessary. I called the Plumbing Dr and was told by someone other than Matt that, yes, they were available but not in grey. In fact, I was told that colored toilets are no longer sold. The unit installed is called by Gerber a Viper, and the particular version is discontinued. The one I had expected is a model called Ultra Flush, which is pressure assisted and at one time was rated by Consumer Reports as it's highest rated, though it no longer is. The Viper is list priced at $243, about half that of the Ultra Flush. The Plumbing Dr charged me $1,422.90 in total, which is $1,179.90 for installation. However, there is nothing special about the bathroom in which it is installed. I was not pre-informed of the switch, and the amount I was charged was not altered even though the cost of the toilet was different. Further research shows that colored toilets are still sold, though the options are now more limited. Kohler offers a whole line of grey toilets. I checked the Plumbing Dr website, and I discovered that Matt is not a licensed plumber. He is listed as a "plumber's helper". The Commonwealth Board of Contractors requires a professional plumber to hold a Class C license to perform work of the value I was charged. Therefore, Matt is just a handyman, and everything he told me, and I was told over the phone by the company's representative, is incorrect, insofar as I can determine. On the ticket Matt wrote, he signed his name "Dr. Matt". Throughout, i was led to believe Matt is an experienced licensed plumber. Had I known he wasn't licensed, I would not have allowed him onto the premises in the first place. The Plumbing Dr has a high reputation, and is an established firm. However, in this case, the Plumbing Dr is guilty of malpractice. The company removed a toilet rather than repairing it, replaced it with an inferior unit, charged an exorbitant fee for installation, and used an installer who is not a licensed plumber. I have not decided as yet how best to proceed. Putting the "Dr" marketing usage aside, the company appears to be a family run business. And, I am a long time customer. In fact, the proprietor, William Bennett, performed work on the toilet that was replaced almost ten years ago. I never had any reason to question the integrity or business ethics of the company before. You wouldn't think the company would want to cheat its long time customers. If I file a complaint, it will certainly not help the firm's business. It may not accomplish anything. Or, it may ruin the company. I don't really know. However, I feel I should do something. After all, the company now appears to be engaged in highly questionable business practices. Consumers should be advised. So, here I am writing a review. Caveat emptor. read more

Overall, I felt a little gouged, but told myself that I was paying for them to come out the next day (I called on a Thursday and got a Friday appointment), versus the following Wednesday as quoted by Stevens Plumbing (the place my entire building uses - apparently, they know our building and we get a great rate with them). For less than an hour's worth of work (he basically re-piped under my kitchen sink), he consulted his magic chart and it was $372. That's quite an hourly rate for someone I'm assuming isn't a "master plumber", nor did it seem to require the skills/experience of a master plumber. As far as service, the person who answered the phone was very pleasant. The plumber that actually came (Charlie) didn't really like people (that much was obvious), but he did the work and so far nothing has exploded or sprung a leak. Oh well, I'll hope to be in position to choose Stevens next time and save these guys for when I'm really desperate. read more
