I've called ahead when I've made our reservation to request something out of the ordinary and they always come through!! Tonight our waitress was Chris and we loved her! N. B.: this restaurant serves NO alcohol! You may bring your own wine, though. I didn't notice this important fact buried in some reviews or their Open Table information. It definitely made a difference in my fine dining experience, because wine with dinner is what we do. Since I had received an email and a text from Open Table, I was surprised this hadn't been more forcefully conveyed. The restaurant was lovely, decorated with a variety of pictures that included pears. and servers formal and polite. There were so many interesting choices it was difficult to decide. The Corn Bisque was unique and delicious, a sweet soup that should be tried at least once to see if it's your new go-to. It was my boyfriend's favorite part of the meal. I had the poached pear salad: fresh and tasty, with toasted hazelnuts and goat cheese. Very good! I had the fish special, which was good and a generous portion, but not quite what I had expected. My boyfriend had the beef filet which was excellent, but, I thought too peppery. I like meat to taste like meat. This was prepared exactly as he asked but lots of spice on the outside. Something to discuss in advance. Smashed potatoes were a perfect accompaniment. Desserts were magnificent, though, and my favorite part of the meal. I had the Lemon Napoleon: fluffy tart lemon custard layered with crisp flaky sections of pastry, topped with a sweet delicious blueberry syrup and fruits. Mmmm! He had the carrot cake: round sections of cake layered with a creamy frosting. Again, non-traditional but better unless you wanted Mom's. Besides the lack of wine, we had to ask for water several times, it was not automatically refilled. I wasn't impressed with the decaf coffee: it tasted like premade cold brew which was too strong for a non- espresso. We were not offered any more than the first cup or the first roll, earlier. The Poached Pear is an American bistro on Arnold Ave in Point Pleasant, but it can rival some of the best NY eateries. The menu is sure to fit everyone's tastes with numerous meat selections such as beef, chicken, veal, lamb, duck, and a few fish offerings. Although moderately expensive, the quality and portion size is top notch. In addition, it is a BYOB which inherently makes the cost more effective. The Poached Pear is worth every dollar because of the diverse menu and superior quality they achieve. Most would say this is a special occasion type of restaurant, but my family can't get enough of it. It is too good to wait around for birthdays or anniversaries. Poached Pear is now a regular spot for us, and by regular I mean 3 times in one week since discovering how delicious the food is! Now what have we ordered that backs up this stellar review? The rack of lamb is one of the best I've ever had. Not just the potato crusted, goat cheese crust (not overpowering at all) but the meat itself is melt in your mouth. Extremely tender, cooked to perfection this is the best offering we have tried so far. Other entrees my party ordered included the halibut which was seared to add a wonderful texture to the exterior of the fish. Veal and red snapper special were also great options, but the lamb chops are King. Yes of course we had appetizers but I just had to get to that lamb. The crab cake, gnocchi, mushroom special, and garlic shrimp are the ones we have tried so far. I'll give you a brief summary of each. The crab cake was tasty and had no filler. Gnocchi is glazed in a brown butter sauce with mushrooms, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Garlic shrimp came on toasted bread in a cream sauce. And lastly, the mushroom special included 4 varieties sautéed with 2 puff pastries on the plate. The pastry chef is excellent and these puff pastries (also included on veal entree and dessert) are light and crispy. You can't go wrong with any of these choices and I'm beginning to feel that is the case with everything on the menu. If you are wondering if we had something sweet, you must not know my motto 'there is always room for dessert'. In our two trips to the Poached Pear we have tried the bananas foster, creme brulee, and lemon Napoleon. The highlight had to be the creme brulee and Napoleon, both are completely opposites of each other. The vanilla bean creme brulee is mild and easy on the palette compared to the lemon napoleon that is strong with tang and tartness. The Napoleon has two layers of pastry between the mousse which adds a crunch and is probably our favorite dessert. It is difficult to have these on the table at the same time, because the lemon overpowers the vanilla, but standalone each are wonderful choices. It is obvious to tell when the owner/manager and chef (who are brothers) know what they are doing and that is apparent at The Poached Pear. Every detail of the meal is well done from the service to presentation. Poached pear is a hidden gem in Point Pleasant. Tucked away on the quiet end of Arnold Avenue, Poached Pear will not disappoint! My favorite entree by far is the crab cakes. They are filled to the brim with real lump crab meat. They are about 2 inches high. They serve you two of them, and you will definitely have leftovers. This place has been on our radar for quite some time and we never got there because it was always a little far from our home in North Jersey. Well after moving to South Jersey and making a reservation a month in advance, we finally made it here and it was definitely worth the wait. To begin with, we were greeted by a friendly host who seated us at a cozy table in the corner. The atmosphere is great with a tasteful decor that exudes a touch of class. Our waiter, Nick, was top notch and very professional. After hearing the specials and a couple of suggestions from Nick, we decided to start with the Duck Confit Raviolis as our appetizer. These raviolis were amazing, served over a butternut squash puree, tarragon demi-glace, topped with sweet potato shoestrings. We could see why this was one of their more popular starters. For our main courses, my wife went with one of the specials, Lamb Osso Bucco over truffled mashed potatoes. This was delicious, the meat, smothered in a flavorful gravy, literally melted in your mouth. I decided to go with one of the house favorites, Parmesan & Toasted Almond Crusted Halibut. This was excellent, served with grilled asparagus over basil pesto mashed potatoes and fennel sauce. Beautifully presented with a large piece of tender flakey white fish. The crust was delicious and the dish overall, lived up to it's billing. Finally, when we heard the pastry chef here, Teah Evans, was a winner of the Food Network's "Chopped" you know we definitely had to have dessert. We chose a great one, the Grand Marnier Crepe Cake. This was Grand Marnier mousse layered between crepes and served with vanilla gelato. All I can say is I highly recommend this dessert. It's an unassuming storefront location on the main commercial street in PPB, Arnold Avenue, about a mile in off the beach. Reservations are a must. Among our party of four we had: carpaccio, duck ravioli, grilled calamari and octopus salad, halibut special and lobster on crab cake. The lobster was out of this world -- creative and delicious. All downed with a few bottles of Whispering Angel and followed by an incredible gelato. Our waitress was so nice and very attentive. As was the food service to and from our table. The restrooms were clean. My only slight complaint is that I wish the bottles they kept on ice for us could have been left properly next to our table, not on the window sill 25' away across the room. We came here for a family members birthday and there were 5 of us. The service is top notch, 5 stars, from being seated to being served it definitely gives you a high end feel. I really want to make this rating closer to 4.5 stars, because that's a more accurate rating. We started with the Burrata, Jersey Corn soup, grilled calamari and octopus appetizers. The lobster mac and cheese cake (fried ball) was very tasty but I don't know if I'd consider that lobster mac and cheese so much as regular mac and cheese, very limited amount of actual lobster in there but it too was very tasty. It is obvious they have made cuts and changed suppliers hoping customers will not notice. If you go to a restaurant frequently you will be able to tell the difference in the quality. We started with the mushrooms in a puffed pastry appetizer along with the asparagus "fries" both of which were delicious. We had the mushroom soup which was spectacular. I had the lobster over crab cake with spinach special which was cooked perfectly with sweet lobster and all crab-meat cake. The table also had the NY strip steak and lamb shank special. The entrees were all delicious and plentiful. The bananas foster dessert was deliciously sweet and the chocolate and vanilla peanut butter gelato scoops were both creamy and yummy. The meal was delicious and the service was solid. We did not feel rushed at all. We had an early dinner at 6 so by the time we left around 8p the restaurant was packed and LOUD. This is my parent's favorite restaurant. We treated them to dinner here when we were in town from LA. The food and service were excellent. We all had a different entree and they were all delicious. Food quality is up there in fine dining but with large portions. We got the special wild mushroom and truffle soup and it was delicious. Followed by the lump crab cakes and my wife got the veggie risotto. Both were amazing. The crab cakes were huge and packed with meat. The roasted vegetables were some of the best I've ever had.
