This weekend we came for a birthday party in the Eagle Room. It was beautifully decorated with a flower display at the buffet table. It's a small intimate area. The food was brunch with frittata, French toast, bacon, sausage, roasted vegetables, butternut squash and fresh fruit. The food looked delicious. The butternut squash was my favorite. Now for the downside, my bf and I were a few of the last people to get our first plate. When we were getting food, most of the trays were almost empty and they didn't have enough food. It's a buffet and shouldn't there be enough food for all. My bf didn't get the frittata or bacon. Usually there's more than enough food and then some. People asked and they weren't making more. A friend wanted more sausage links for his son and they had to make a couple links. Disappointed because usually there should be second helping and at least enough for first helping. So I ended up with a stomach ache and not feeling well. I hadn't left yet. I rushed home. Found out there were a couple more people had the same feeling after leaving. Came here for brunch late Sunday morning. It was pretty empty so our server was really attentive.. I think it's a bnb so it gives off a home atmosphere and has a parking lot! The food was pretty good and wasn't skimpy with the portions. It has my tummy rumbling now thinking about the crispy tots and bacon. The combo I got also came with a pretty good omelete, sausage links and French toast. You can swap out the tots for sweet potato fries to feel more healthy or just eat the fruit cup and call it a day. Not one of those bougee overprice brunch spots, an actual brunch spot. After church our group decided to go to breakfast, we've never tried The Polo Inn, so we decided to try it. Delicious food, BYOB (we did) mimosas, good music/singer, fresh flowers, good service, clean & owner/manager even stopped to ask if we were enjoying ourselves! The only thing that threw me off was that there was no brunch, which to me means a buffet/smorgasbord of mixed breakfast food and lunch food. We ordered off the menu. This is a great place in Bridgeport for an easy dinner. They are BYOB, in case that's something of interest, which is a really nice feature. The hours have recently changed, so be sure that you're checking for the most up to date hours before going. We called before we went in because we weren't 100% sure if the hours, and they were really great on the phone. It's never too busy inside, but also never dead either, which is a nice balance. We hadn't been to the Polo cafe in probably 20 years, having been not so impressed on a couple visits back then. However we stopped in for lunch recently and are very pleased to report that they are indeed a bona fide "real" restaurant! We had two beautiful soups of the day, cream of spinach and cream of corn, both worthy of accolades. Then the meatloaf with mash potatoes and gravy, a welcome comfort food, and the crab nuggets, with a tangy sauce. The Caesar salad was fresh and crunchy and the crème brûlée was a small but welcome finish! Though their hours are weird (they close at 6 pm when most people are just beginning to think about dinner!)and they no longer do drinks, their 5$ byob policy seems acceptable. Owner Dave and staff friendliest people you will ever meet, the soda fountain scene from "Hoodlum" was filmed at this very location. Sheila and I dined at the Polo Inn a few weeks ago after driving by several times wishing it was the right occasion. We both had the steak sandwich. I had mine with a side salad and she had french fries. The sandwich was pretty good overall and I really enjoyed the salad as well. I picked at her fries which I also enjoyed. The meat had good taste and I liked that they add mozzarella cheese. The steak could be trimmed better as we each had a few bites that were chewy. Overall, we loved the idea of the Polo Inn, their story, the decor including the Mayor Daley picture, and the food. We should be back. read more

Neighborhood stalwart, this venerable family operation is decorated with historic Chicago memorabilia. The big picture of "The Boss," makes me a little nostalgic for entertaining local government corruption. Last time I was here I tried explaining to a couple of "adults" that long before Al Gore had an election stolen from him by voting irregularities, Richard Nixon was robbed by Chicago voter fraud. Of course they had never heard of NIxon, Gore or Daley because young Americans don't believe in history. Okay, well maybe you're not interested in history either. Located in an old historic building in Bridgeport, Polo Cafe and Catering serves up good food in a cute environment. Polo used to be Polo Nuts and Candy- so where you sit to eat is the old store complete with tin ceilings, antique dolls and display cases. This place is simple- a few booths and some tables and most likely you will meet the Dave the chef/owner who comes out to greet you and welcome you to his restaurant. In addition to the restaurant- the space next door is the available for parties to rent out for showers and private parties. It used to be an old theater so the acoustics are amazing and will hold up to 100 people. It also houses an antique Wurlitzer grand piano and an old pump organ. Dave also just recently renovated the top floors of the building into four 2-3 bedroom suites that function as a Bed and Breakfast. Each are individually theme decorated. On my first visit- I went for dinner. We were warmly greeted and decided to have the stuffed fillet and the bone in ribeye. They come served with mashed potatoes and a vegetable combination. Either our server wasn't paying attention or there was a mix up in the kitchen but both of our steaks came out way too well done and the sides were on the cool side. While usually not one to send something back- since the chef was standing there and he asked we told him the steaks were done way too well. They did them over and the on the second try mine was fine- but the ribeye was still too done. Not a stellar showing. But since we liked the owner so much- we thought we'd give it another go at a Saturday morning "Bloody Mary brunch". Know before you go that they only serve brunch on Saturdays and not Sundays. We got there around 12:30 and were the only ones in the place. We ordered a few Bloody Mary's and breakfast. Just a note- if you don't like horseradish- be very aware that the Bloody Mary's at this place taste like cocktail sauce in a glass as there is ALOT of horseradish in them. One was more than enough for me! My breakfast entree was the clear winner. Their signature creme brulee french toast was out of this world! Cooked in a ramekin- it comes out looking like two "flowers" of french toast with vodka syrup and whipped cream in the middle. Absolutely decadent and amazing!! The other entrees of steak and eggs, while good, were pretty typical. Not alot of places to grab brunch in Bridgeport- so I would recommend it for that alone. As for dinner- if I go back- I am going to order more simply as I have a friend who raves about this place- I just didn't see it on my recent visits. read more

I used to live in Bridgeport and never knew there was such top notch food in the neighborhood! Thinking it was a neighborhood place with mostly locals, I initially questioned the validity of such allegedly biased reports of amazing food. However, I attended a fundraiser that was catered by Polo, and even won a generous gift certificate! So I tried it.......AMAZING! The menu was full of familiar entrees, from fish and chips to stuffed pork chops! I love how perfectly each dish comes out. I live in Bucktown but have heard so many great things about Polo....so I can attest it's really, really great food. Been here now 3 times since the shut-down. Steak sandwich, meat loaf, fish fry all super delicious as well as the salads, fries, mashed potatoes were fantastic, fresh, and tasty. Ironically since it's only carry out, I have had to drive back the 15 minutes to my home and they do a great job in their packaging as the food has been more than adequately warm and presented and tasted great. Finally was able to catch this place open, the food looks flattering, but I don't think it was that great. Maybe bcuz the waiter said they were limited on supplies as breakfast is only sold on the weekend. It took a while for the food to arrive, but he was able to accommodate us. I'm not a big fan of bacon ( sausage wasn't an option on this day) and the taste of the eggs were either over-cooked or definitely missing something- I didn't eat them. However, I must say the baked crab cake nuggets, which by the way weren't baked, with the hot sauce were amazing. They were so good that I took an order home. The $95 voucher was also a nice gesture, after discovering it, we were able to purchase and apply it to our current tab. I also think it was a bit pricey $19 for a meal with French toast!!! My friend, Winnie, took me to the Polo Inn for dinner, and the meal was the best I've had in a very long time. We split the meatloaf which came with mashed potatoes, vegetables and was delicious. Do to Covid it was held in their home. I want to mention how the food was served. Hors D'oeuvres served hot in a boat like holder: Cab Cake nuggets, Bacon Wrapped dates, Pigs in a Blanket, and Shrimp Satay. Outstanding delicious. Main Food Stations: Beef Pot Roast Sliders, Chicken wraps wrapped in foil just the right size. In covered plastic containers: Baked Wild Alaskan Salmon with Spanish Rice, best Salmon ever. Spinach Artichoke Raviolis in Fire Roasted Tomato Vodka Sauce there were 6 raviolis's so delicious. So much food we got to take home as many containers we wanted. Polo Inn is kind of a secret place, you need a friend to tell you about them. I did go to a wedding there many years ago and my family went there for breakfast. One of us did order Egg's Benedict and got the Pope's picture and candles what a wonderful surprise, we took pictures. Differently visit Polo Inn and enjoy their wonderful food. This is one of those places that has been there for ages but that many people do not notice. It keeps unusual hours and looks something like a storefront at first glance, adding to its anonymity. But I always wanted to go there so I made reservations for the Gospel Brunch with a big group of people. The menu had so many delicious options on it that it was difficult to choose. Everyone's dishes were tasty looking and the portions were large. I ordered the 1/2 portion of St. MARY MAGDELENE Crème Brûlée French Toast and I had to ask people to help me finish it (and we still didn't). The mimosas were giant, served in wine glasses instead of champagne flutes. The organist played classic church hymns, which added to the atmosphere (I would say it's a hymnal brunch, not a gospel brunch, but that's all right). A couple of people in our party had to wait for their Chicken & Waffles but the staff was apologetic and the owner joked that he'd already ordered more waffle irons so it wouldn't happen again. The staff was kind and attentive. The space was cozy, warm, and inviting with vintage late 1800s ambience. My grandparents told me it used to be The Eagle movie theater when they were kids. Free parking is another perk. We all really enjoyed our experience, which we would put in a nutshell as: Fun, strange, unique, and delicious! I would definitely return. read more
