I've stayed here four or five times, and the experience has clearly declined. My first two visits were great, the third was fine, but this most recent stay was disappointing. Parking is now a major issue--there's no dedicated option, and the hotel doesn't allow even a brief grace period to unload in their often-empty lot. The bell staff were also surprisingly rude about it. Amenities feel lacking for the price. There are no basic convenience items available, and there's no priority for hotel guests trying to get reservations at The Messler. The room itself had multiple problems. The furnace made loud banging noises every time it turned on (throughout the night), the shower gel dispenser didn't work and wasn't fixed after we reported it, and housekeeping didn't replace washcloths or send them up when requested. Individually these might be minor, but together--at this price point--they add up. The design touches are nice, but they don't make up for the lack of basic comfort and service. At this point, it feels like a budget version of a Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. read more

Great location! Only 20 mins or so from Downtown Chicago and if you Uber here you'll get a nice scenic view of Lake shore drive. So, if you want Chicago without the crowds this is a great choice. Loved the art in the rooms and all across the lobby, elevators etc. There was literally art everywhere your eye could see lol. The room itself had some great touches: a coat rack, vinyl record player, and a towel just for makeup removal in the bathroom. Floor to ceiling windows made waking up to the Chicago skyline in the distance a dream. Hospitality could've been better. When I walked in no one said hi they kinda just stood and stared at me until I mentioned I was checking in. Hyde Park may not be Downtown but it is still in close proximity to restaurants (Virtue was on the next block !) and other options (Starbucks, Whole Foods etc) if necessary. read more

Almost. That is the word I would use to describe my stay at the Sophy Hyde Park. This hotel almost lives up to the expectations of a 4-star hotel with an "exceptional" score on third-party booking sites. The bar and dining area were beautiful, but the drinks were mediocre. We did not order food because the menu was small, unappealing, and a bit pricey. The common areas are very nice, and the rooms are larger and well-appointed. However, there were some upkeep (not cleanliness) concerns such as chipping paint, wear on the toilet seat, and dingy caulking around the shower glass door. As someone who usually stays in the downtown area on visits, I found the surrounding Hyde Park area nice, quiet, and friendly, but it is a 25-minute-plus Uber ride to downtown Chicago. And finally, the bar staff was nice and attentive, but the front desk staff is NOTHING I would expect at a 4-star hotel. The staff at check-in were friendly enough, not what's expected, but enough. However, the night person Kaylee (spelling?) was absolutely horrible for what this hotel is trying to be. She does not greet you when you come into the hotel, and you literally walk a foot away from the front desk all the way down the length of the desk to get to the elevators. Her demeanor and tone are cold, short, and have an air of "why are you even talking to me right now," which is weird for a person who made the decision to work in hospitality at a hotel with rooms at $300+ a night. Finally, at a 5:15 AM checkout, I had to stand there and wait for her to take her time unwrapping from her blanket that she was laying under on the lobby couch to come to the desk for my checkout, and apparently, there is no receipt to print upon checkout. Will it be emailed at some point? I don't know. The security guy attempted to help so she could stay comfortably laying on her couch in the dark on her laptop. Again, horrible customer service from Kaylee, if that's her name, because she hesitated when I asked her name like she had to think about it, or maybe it was a "why are you asking me" pause. So as I started this post, ALMOST. It is the subtle differences that make a 4-star hotel, and this one does not have anything of a 4-star hotel beyond aesthetic. More work to be done. read more

Although there were a few drawbacks initially, the pros ultimately outweighed the cons. Specifically, the rooms were spacious, and the daytime staff were exceptionally professional and friendly. Neeka and Sam, in particular, were very attentive and helpful, providing useful information about the hotel's amenities, offering directions, and making recommendations for various attractions in the area. Beautiful scenery inside the hotel lobby / bar area, and it's accompanied by a beautiful large fire place. I'd recommend this place for a intimate date night, or even if your out with your girls or guys. The staff were very friendly & consistent in service. For the drinks & food - I kept it simple with their Chop Shop Cab. wine & fries, however my guest had the cauliflower wings which were very good; and the standard wings which were pretty okay. My husband and I really enjoyed our visit to this hotel this winter for a staycation. The booking process: Booking the room was easy and we got a great rate for the Novel Suite. The neighborhood: I really like Hyde Park and have been to this neighborhood many other times in the past. It was pretty cold and snowy over the course of our stay, so we didn't explore the area too much. I would like to stay at this hotel again during a better weather day to spend time at the lake and walk around more. We had dinner at Virtue (I highly suggest trying them as well) and coffee the next morning at Philz. Both places are only a block or less away. Parking: The onsite parking site is fairly small, but they do typically allow you to pull in to the lot to unload your baggage and check in. We came on a Saturday night and just paid the meter for 3 or 4 hours until parking became free through Sunday. There is also a couple of parking garages in the area if that works better for you. Room/Common Areas: We had the Novel Suite and it was stunning! All design details around the hotel were well thought out and visually appealing. Everything from the comfortable mattress, unique artwork, and even the cocktail glasses inside of the room was perfect. The bathroom inside the suite was large. There are two things I wish they would add to the room. #1- A TV in the bedroom (There is just one in the common area of the suite). #2- Smart TVs. Many newer hotels (I believe they have been open 3 years or less) have them and it makes it easier to stream Netflix, etc. on a cold night when there isn't much else to do. Hotel Bar/Restaurant: We didn't eat or drink at Mesler, but we brought items up to the room at night and in the morning. The cocktails were excellent. I would rate the crab cake benedict about a 6/10. It wasn't bad at all, but I've had better at other places. The bar closed at 8pm on the night we were there, which was early. But hopefully, that has changed/will change soon. I know that hours vary a lot with COVID related restrictions in Chicago. read more

I spent a week at the Sophy while visiting friends and family in Chicago. My experience was excellent from start to finish. I received a warm welcome from the staff upon my late-night arrival, something I hadn't experienced before at other hotels. The room was both clean and spacious. I cannot remember the name of the guest services specialist who first greeted us, but she was outstanding, as were most of the service staff members. We've traveled with our puppy a few times and, compared to other pet-friendly hotels, the Sophy was the most welcoming. The staff always interacted with him playfully and pleasantly, offering freshly made treats daily. We also ate at Mesler several times, and every dish was delicious. The location is great, with all of Hyde Park's best restaurants within walking distance, along with a Target Express and Whole Foods. The Metra train station, which provides access to downtown, is just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. All in all I highly recommend the staying at the Sophy hotel and it will definitely be my hotel of choice the next time I'm in Chicago. read more

I don't add much syrup to my pancakes but my dining guests drenched them with syrup. Hash browns: a very well cooked potato cake. The Room: The location of the safe is clever. Spacious. Clean. Open face shower. Sink water pressure is strong. Shower water pressure is weak. Work desk is perfect. Decor is very cigar lounge, traditional cherry wood inspired, warm and sheer perfection for my taste. Lunch Spicy chicken sandwich was pretty but didn't do much for my taste buds. It's saucy. Edible but nothing stands out. The Old Fashioned was perfect and smoky without the smoke. Saturday night was lit but very mature and diverse. a beautiful hotel. but I rented 2 separate rooms for 2 nights (about $375/night each) and was shocked to come back after a long day out in the city to find they hadn't made up either room. when I called the front desk, they told me I had to put on the light -- that they never told me I needed to put on. I would have thought it was a default assumption that my room would be made up at such a nice place. otherwise would have been 5 stars but for this kind of $ I'm sorry do better. btw this was like my 4th time staying here and I've never had to do this in order to get my room cleaned. read more

Really nice boutique hotel. It's only been open for a year. The decor impressed as it is a mashup of art, music, and glam. There's plenty of artwork and books everywhere, and even a phonograph with two records in the room. They share a shuttle with the Hyatt nearby as the ownership group is the same. Steak- well done , no wine sauce. Typical breakfast steaks are New York or Filet mignon, mostly about half sized. I was served a Tri-tip that was butterflied Eggs Good restaurants do not burn your eggs. Sunny side up means the chief cooks them at a lower temperature with butter ( clarified ) or oil and should not have burnt edges. THE BILL Steak & Eggs = $38.00 Coffee =$5.00 Gratuity =$8.00 $51.00 No worth a tough piece of tri tip and 2 burnt eggs As mentioned before I can not review the total menu but the highest priced plate is not worth the price read more

I recently visited Chicago and decided to stay at this hotel. I loved this hotel so much! Something that I learned about it was that they are what is considered a boutique hotel or what is defined as a small stylish hotel, typically one situated in a fashionable urban location. They actually have a loyalty program or membership that you can get points with. I stayed in two types of suites while at this hotel due to availability and both were exceptionally nice. One was the the Novel and the other was the Dorchester. Both had beautiful layouts, room accents (from the blankets, pillows, wall art, record player with a curated choice of music, books about the history of the area etc.) Both restrooms were beautiful and very spacious. One featured a shower and soaking tub. The views in both suites were incredible. I loved the thoughtfulness in the fact that both rooms had desks in the master bedroom and also extra sitting space incase I needed to work remotely or in person with a client or team members. The staff made sure that the room switch was simple as well and checked to make sure that I didn't need anything. The restaurant at the hotel had decent portions but do not open on Mondays so be mindful to grab something on the way in or order in. Another feature that I loved about this hotel was that this area had local shops and eatery's as well (one featured where President Barack and first lady Michelle Obama had their first date in Baskin Robbins was right across the street) which was super cool! We had wings, a Caesar salad and one drink each. The wings were edible but the salad was gross. I've never seen a Caesar salad made with mixed greens. The arugula overpowered the entire salad and was inedible. Thank you to the female manager who removed it from our bill. The service was confusing because the hostess told us we had to order from the bar but after 15 minutes of standing at the bar and being ignored, my husband was finally told to have a seat and someone would come take our order. There were way too many tables for one server and one bartender. I'll visit again after I believe all the kinks are gone. By the way, please step up your music game! This hotel is a true Chicago experience. There were blues records and a record player in our room along with iconic books written about Chicago like the The Jungle. It was the most well appointed room I've stayed in. There was even a washcloth for make up. I loved the beautiful wood decor and artwork. My only issue was the lack of valet parking. The parking garage is a couple blocks away, but they let you use a small lot in back to unload. They said it was due to Covid restrictions. You can try to get street parking too. read more

Unfortunately, this hotel does not deliver on it's promise of a upscale nor enjoyable stay. The bar staff is untrained and will leave you waiting for drinks, or they just tend to their friends to which whom they give free drinks, sometimes underaged people drink here too (just saying, I used to come here often). In addition, the bar is never a relaxing atmosphere - so do not come here for peace and quiet. You hope for a certain decorum when staying at or enjoying a hotel of this style, however it falls short. If you were hoping for Four Seasons, you should lower your standards, Motel 6 is the level of service, and service is why people pay a higher price for accommodations. Just because you have nice furniture, does not make you an upscale establishment. But if you just care about furniture / nice decor -- and want to empty your wallet for poor service and low standards of customer service, you are in luck. You have certainly decided to come to the correct place. Again, if this were wine. It would be either Barefoot or some sort of boxed wine. You don't expect too much, except for hospitably and class, and I should hope for $300 a night in a location which is not very accessible that's what you get but... OH WELL. Great job on the decor though, that's pretty legit. But mostly, do better. read more

I stayed here during a long weekend in Chicago to visit my parents who used to live in Hyde Park. This hotel looks really nice and the beds are comfortable rooms are spacious and well decorated but I was extremely disappointed with my stay here and most certainly will not being staying here again and can not recommend this hotel to anyone. The AC broke in our room and it was approaching 80 degrees inside the room. I had to work with Maintenance who tried to fix it multiple times by turning it on and off and couldn't resolve the issue. I asked for compensation as a full refund but was denied. The front desk lady Nicole recommended I sleep in the lobby or open the hotel windows which I told her was not an option due to my seasonal allergies. I'm still speechless she recommend I sleep in the lobby for a hotel room I paid for. Again I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone because it may look nice but under the service is an extremely disappointing subpar experience that will leave you frustrated and angry. read more
