Got my classic, the firefly fries (always incredible flavor) and the pizza (used to be better but still solid). Inside is cute and natural. The Porch restaurant is located near Schenley Plaza. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in spacious indoor and outdoor areas. I ate here two times for breakfast. I appreciated that the restaurant was open early at 7 AM. Both times, an employee kindly greeted me, showed me the small menu of breakfast items (e.g., three breakfast sandwiches, muffins, coffees, and teas), took my order and payment, and told me that I could sit wherever I wanted. For my first visit, I rate my Tropical Green hot tea as 5 stars and my bacon-egg-cheese sandwich as 5 stars. I really enjoyed their flavors. The sandwich was a large size and had buttery, crispy bread. The total cost was a reasonable $9 plus tax and tip. For my second visit, I rate my English-breakfast tea as 5 stars and my veggie-egg-cheese sandwich as 5 stars. Simple but delicious! And again only $9 plus tax and tip. Last week I went to The Porch in Oakland for the first time before seeing Lorde in concert at Petersen Events Center on Pitt's campus. Since it was a Friday night on a college campus before a concert it was crazy busy... but it also appeared to be families/parents weekend at Pitt because there were so many college kids with their parents. They don't do reservations, but they had a waitlist which I was able to join before getting there. Once we got there just before 6 pm, we waited about 25 min but it wasn't too bad. All the staff members were hustling, props to them!!! My friend and I split everything: Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza - we really enjoyed this! They used goat cheese along with mozzarella, and it was a really nice touch! Firefly fries aka truffle fries - can't ever go wrong with truffle fries! They were pretty good, not my favorite ever (not as crispy as I would've liked), but they did the job. Aperol Autumn Spritz Pitcher - such a great deal! We each got 3 drinks out of this. I was impressed at how good the pitcher was! Our pitcher came out fast, as well as the fries; it was just the pizza that took the longest. We were good on time though so we weren't worried or rushed. I'd like to go back on a day that would be less busy, I also want to try their burger. read more

It was sweltering out today so I took cover in this nice shaded/air conditioned spot in Schenley Plaza. I liked the idea of placing a quick order at the counter with food being brought out, but the overall experience on a weekday at lunch could definitely be improved. Despite it being counter service, I still think it's nice for employees to let customers know where to grab utensils/water/high chairs. I got seated and waited 20 minutes for my Truffle Burger with mixed greens as a side. It felt unusually long for a counter order situation! If I had known I probably would have dined elsewhere, that's far too long to entertain a baby solo prior to getting food! Ultimately my burger was pretty good, it came with two slices of tomato/lettuce on the side and the bacon jam was very tasty. The final bites of burger that didn't have sauce were a bit bland, similar to the forgettable side of mixed greens that came as one of the options. I'd consider trying a side of the fries/tots if I make it back here for another meal! read more

Soooooo, this Illy Philly was going to class and needed nourishment for her vegan soul. I walked in and the restaurant was busy and full. I looked at the menu while I stood in line and didn't really see any vegan options. While standing in line you can see the busy kitchen and staff working in the kitchen. To my absolute horror I see the owner stick his unloved hand into the salad bin as he was walking by and pop lettuce into his mouth. I told the person at the register and she said that he was the owner. I let her know what I saw him do and she just stared at me like a deer in headlights. They were really busy when we came in on a Friday night. We opted for bar seating, but the food still took a bit to come. My American wagyu beef burger was pretty good. It had some kind of sweet sauce on it with bacon bits! The burger itself was juicy and cooked just right at medium rare. My roasted taters were also really good. I would get this dish again. It only took me three years to come here after moving to PGH! (I will note that I visited after the college year had ended.) I enjoyed my food a lot and could see myself returning here again to sit outdoors on a day when the weather is perfect! The menu here for dinner is concise, but has a lot of good selections. I thoroughly enjoyed the side strawberry salad and then also had the NY strip steak, which was seasoned and cooked to perfection. They have a large menu of wine and cocktails here also. The secret is that this is owned by Eat 'n Park, which is evident if you visit the bathroom (it reminded me of their other restaurants), but otherwise, could quite potentially fool you in its more upscale atmosphere. It feels more like an area to visit for meetings or visiting friends, but for actual food if I'm honest felt kind of like reheated food. The burger was kind of hard to eat, and the outside was charred (asked for medium well), while the fries were cold . I really don't mean to be negative as I don't post reviews often but the experience was kind of unfortunate. My friend said her tomato soup was cold as well, with the only really well note worthy thing were the mocktails- amazing! Stopped here with the family after our visit at Phipps. The staff were very friendly and with a party of 12 we're not phased by us. Dinner here was great! My family and I (four people total) waited about an hour to be sat because the restaurant was decently busy, but when we were sat, they put us in a booth near a window with a beautiful view. The music was not too loud, and we all could hear each other well. Our server, Isabella, was friendly, fun and very attentive. She accommodated all of our requests, knew her way around the menu, and seemed to really enjoy working here. For drinks, we all enjoyed everything we ordered. I ordered the Perfect Pear, which is a sweet and floral drink, super refreshing for the summer. For our appetizers, we ordered the crispy taters, warm sourdough focaccia, and firefly fries. All of the apps were great, but our favorites were the taters and the fries. The garlic dipping aioli for the firefly fries (which are basically re-branded truffle fries) is to die for. The crispy taters had a great pop to the skin when I bit into them, and they pair nicely with the in-house curried ketchup. For our entrees, we ordered the strawberry salad (sub romaine instead of the arugula), 2 truffle burgers (one of them with goat cheese added), and the cavatelli bolognese. They were out of the ricotta that goes on the bolognese. Regardless of the missing ricotta, we all enjoyed our entrees very much. My burger was decadent but very nicely balanced. There were a few pinch points that did affect our experience at times. First: The Porch needs to invest in fly traps. There weren't an obscene amount of flies, but it was enough to notice throughout dinner. We weren't grossed out, but it was an annoyance for sure. Second, it seemed to me from my restaurant employment experience and from watching the place operate for about an hour that the hosts also act as the bussers. The servers do their share of pre-bussing, but regardless this resulted in multiple lines out of the door and onto the courtyard that took quite awhile to simmer down. It seemed like a poor choice to have them doing both, because the lines wouldn't have been waiting around as long had there been a host constantly taking customers at the host stand. Maybe I'm not seeing the full picture, but it was frustrating to not have a host stationed in the host stand the whole time that could have quickly resolved the constant stream of people in and out of the door and relatively small waiting area. Regardless of these bumps in the road, The Porch was a great place to eat. The issues were not large enough to be major grievances, but if/when we come back here in the future it would be nice to see these things resolved. Cheers to Isabella our server, who was wonderful, and cheers to the kitchen staff who do a great job whipping up some excellent food. TL;DR. A few minor bugs (no pun intended) that don't affect the overall experience. The Porch is a great place to grab a bite to eat. We're looking forward to returning! read more

This place is odd. You get water yourself. Go to a counter and order. No one checked back on us at all Pay as you go . French dip was amazing. However my southwest salad was pretty sad. To note my salad sat on the counter for 15 minutes . Waiting on my chicken to be ready. Knew no one's name . The kicker was when I had to ask the servers for a box. I'm sorry I bothered you munching on chicken tenders and fries ! Staff seriously unpardonable an don't care at all!!!! I assume the manager was the one who brought us silver 5 minutes after our food was presented . If I wanted to get my own drinks, utensil etc I would've stayed home . We were treated to food & drink from their harvest of fall menu with Oktoberfest inspired & seasonal dishes made from locally sourced ingredients - even the honey cultivated from their own rooftop beehives. I would not get again. The server was great and she knew the menu. For lunch it's a counter place where you order up front. Dinner they serve you at the table. Cross contamination risk if you're sensitive to gluten. If you're not that sensitive and can handle the risk, then it's great. They have gluten free buns and the gf bun tastes great. However, They use the same fryer so fries and buffalo wings have cross contamination. The buffalo wings aren't breaded if you're Not sensitive to cross contamination. read more

Between us we had the bolognese, chicken and biscuits, and the chicken snitzel. It was all beautifully presented, and good but we all thought our dishes lacked seasoning making it kind of disappointing. However I will say I was impressed that the chicken was so moist for friend chicken, overall good quality just really needed seasoned. Our server was nice enough but missed details sometimes: we had to ask for more water instead of him just noticing and giving us more automatically and he subbed our tater tots with fries and didn't address it at all with us until we asked about it.
