Our server was in orientation. She was quiet, friendly, but well versed in the menu to make recommendations. We started with the mussels with pesto and leeks. Nice size order. Toasted bread was available to sop up all the mussel, pesto, and leek juices. Very good. The wedge salads were a nice size. The blue cheese had a good tang. The Cornerstone roasted chicken was a hit. The salmon inside was perfectly cook but outside was a little too charred. The roasted potatoes were in a vinegarette very tasty. Large portions. We decided to split the lava cake and cheesecake. I'd give it a 3.75. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was perfectly crispy, but not overcharred to the point that you couldn't taste them itself. Great portion size as well. The brisket tacos were good, I just wish the sauce had a bit more flavor. My friends enjoyed their pasta! Service was good, our waitress checked on us a bunch. It was kind of hard to hear our waitress at times, so we had to re-ask questions about the menu. Didn't see too much of the space, but overall it looked really nice. I don't understand how this restaurant has any good reviews. This was the worst meal we have had in years.. service was terrible ( understaffed), The food was awful... praying we don't get food poisoning. The chop salad was a joke...had to hunt for undercooked shrimp which was cut into small pieces to disguise the portioning of two small shrimp. Feta cheese was listed, had to hunt for that as well. Cornerstone did an amazing job of hosting our large group for dinner, especially when booked just a day ahead. The service was efficient and food good. The Brussel Sprouts and Chicken Pot Pie were the standouts for me. We have dined here several times over the years and have never been disappointed. We had reservations for a Mother's Day brunch at cornerstone. We were the first ones at the restaurant, seated by ourselves for a few minutes. We sat in the back room, which had a beautiful ceiling and lit tables. The bar area has a unique brick wall. There are tables out front for al fresco dining. There is a kids menu with the normal offerings like grilled cheese, but also includes a few specialties like a kid's salmon. The tables have linens but were also covered with paper - which the waitress suggested the kids color on it directly! They loved that, it was a giant canvas. It was a good experience. The service was friendly and accurate, but even the drinks were slow to come out. I'm not sure if there are better parking options, but everything we saw nearby was street/permit only. We used the metered lot about a block away, which was fine given the good weather, but I would be apprehensive if you have mobility concerns or snow/rain. read more

SO SO good. Flavors were amazing, a little kick but not overwhelming. Perfectly balanced with the Mussels that weren't over cooked. Absolutley delicious. My friends and I came here on Wednesday night. It wasn't too crowded, but there were a few tables with people. Our waitress was really nice, however also extremely forgetful. We had to ask her for drinks multiple times before she finally remembered to bring it. As far as the food goes, my burger was good. I ordered it medium and it was cooked perfectly medium. The fries were soggy though. One of my friends ordered the gnocchi and received pappardelle instead. The bus boy went to get our waitress, but she forgot to come over. We waited about 10 mins before we were able to get her attention from helping another table. The manager eventually came over to let us know that the menu had changed. He remedied the situation by heating up the meal and removing the charge. Overall, it was a very "meh" experience. read more

My husband, my son and I went to cornerstone for dinner last night. It was absolutely amazing. The food, the staff and being able to sit outside was really awesome. The food was fresh and you can tell the pasta homemade. My husband had a Pittsburgh ale and I had two dirty martinis. The martinis were perfect. I would've liked a stuffed Olive of instead, but that is just my preference! The Martini was absolutely perfect. My husband enjoyed his beer as well. We each had a dish. My husband had the Dr. Bob's burger, which is a hamburger with brisket and he said it was delicious. I had the cavatelli with cannellini beans, Frankie's hot sausage; this was so good and the portion is large! The food is really good. Hopefully next time I can stick around for dessert. Updating this review from several years ago. I think Cornerstone is a great local spot that holds a dependable crowd. Came here with 4 friends and a baby on a Monday night which is definitely the night to come, as no one was there. Our server was great and filled waters a decent amount, provided recs and was overall friendly and helpful. We each had something different and all meals got rave reviews. Guess I should have re-read what I got the first time....because I still stuck with the steak salad...and the steak was still chewy and didn't come out medium well. I have learned my lesson this time! Also, they need to serve this in a large bowl. Cutting chewy steak and large onions just shuffles the food around (and almost off) the plate. The flavor was great, though. I do like this place and I'll try something else next time! read more

We got a gift card for Cornerstone, so we tried it for dinner tonight. It was a pleasant surprise. Although I am very focused on the Pittsburgh restaurant scene, I never heard of the place. It's a local bar/restaurant, nicely decorated, with a big bar and small dining room. The menu is hard to categorize, with a bunch of apps of various types, a good variety of entrees, and multiple sandwiches. We just had the duck confit steamed buns and a side of fries. We started with martinis followed by glasses of white wine. The by the glass list was diverse and fairly priced. We didn't look at it bottle list, if there was one. I would have appreciated more of the spread, because otherwise the pita was warm but dry. I had enough food from the two appetizers for two meals. Simultaneously both good but also absolutely nothing to write home about. Over the years I've passed by Cornerstone in Aspinwall for various reasons and always thought it looked kinda quaint. The space is just that. I showed up here for brunch with a friend. Don't bother with making a reservation if you're showing up around 11, it wasn't busy today. Our serve Mateo was friendly, but simultaneously I also feel for the guy as he seemed tired and just out of sorts. Not to any detriment of our meal as his service was impeccable, but he just seemed a little haggard. Hope nothing too serious is going on in his life. We split the half order of the stuffed french toast. Honestly, it was really good. The pumpkin puree was very good and the whole dish was great. My friend got the cornerstone breakfast and was accidentally given bacon instead of sausage, but she was fine with and enjoyed her meal. My veggie hash was good and I really liked it, but I honestly wanted a little bit more for the price. The portion was good, and I was satiated, but the bang for buck wasn't quite there. It also really needed just a hint of spice. That said, it did give me an idea to try and make the dish myself. So yeah. It was perfectly fine food with very good company read more

We were looking for a restaurant to meet my cousin while I was in town. A lot of places are not open on Mondays and I'm glad this place was. My husband and cousin got the Amish chicken and it was just yummy. I ordered the tuna nicoise but got the Poké bowl by accident. And it was a happy accident. I had no complaints with it at all and they took care of me by giving me a side salad just because it was their mistake. They have a really nice wine selection and it's just pleasant inside. Can't wait to go again when I'm visiting Pittsburgh. read more

I came here for a work outing, and I was really pleasantly surprised! The waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating to our group of 20 (we had a reservation).The service was a bit slow, but that is definitely to be expected with such a large party. We ordered a few appetizers for the group, but the two standouts were the general tso's cauliflower and the fried brussels sprouts. I have no idea how they got so much flavor on those brussels sprouts while keeping them crispy and not just slathered in sauce, but I could've eaten them as my entree! For my entree, I got the roasted beet salad with salmon cooked medium, which I don't see as an option too often! It was pretty good. The beets, fried goat cheese, and salmon were separated from the salad, which I thought was a little strange. But it was still tasty! They also have a pretty good drink selection--our group got drinks ranging from cocktails, to craft beer, to cider, to wine. Our waitress even had a non-alcholic drink made for the non-drinker in the group, which was really thoughtful. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their food as well, and all of the portions seemed fair for the price. I would definitely come back here with a group again for lunch or dinner. read more

Well ... We have been here more than 30 times. We used to call to find out when a certain chef was on duty. Otherwise it was a MAJOR ROLL OF THE DICE. Then that chef quit. We didn't return for about a year ... So, we were in the area for other business and decided to stop in and see how they were making out. Well ... Not good! Ordered the Crab eggs benidict on wheat toast. The toast came out burned (see photo) ... Listen ... I've burned toast many of times ... But I didn't server it, I threw it away. This toast was burned on one side and not toasted on the other ??? How do you take a piece of totally burned toast and then add the eggs and other topping on top???? With this kind of mentality, the main question is what else are they doing back in that kitchen that you don't know about?!?!?! Although Cornerstone Restaurant is a 40 minute drive for us, we have enjoyed dining here multiple times. Except for last night- 9/14/2024. Our food was subpar- especially the salmon, which was extremely salty. More than that - the service was extremely poor and slow. We waited almost 20 minutes for our entrees and another 10-15 for our dessert to arrive. Our drinks were only refilled when we asked. We also ordered the ribs and needed to ask for an additional plate( for bones) and then additional napkins. We sat with our empty plates for quite a while when finally the waitress asked if we wanted them cleared. No- we'll do it ourselves lol. Such a disappointing dining experience! I wanted to go to Mike's Front Porch but they were closed so this restaurant is on the same street. I parked my car in front of the blue Victorian house where a guy was already warning me and asking me if I was "a resident." He emphatically stated that it was only one hour parking and looked at me like I was committing some crime. (I, on the other hand, was very proud of myself for parking the right direction on the right side of the road, when I clearly could have just pulled in facing the opposite way much easier.) I said I'm not a resident but I'm going to the restaurant here and we will keep an eye out for the time. He leered at me with suspicion from behind what I can only guess was some "New Republic" newspaper and an op-ed about strange redheads taking over his "good ole-fashion" neighborhood. Service: Non-existent leaning? I sat down outside because I had my dog with me and waited 10 min. Clearly, two servers saw me and yet almost refused to come over to see what was up. (After my very pleasant exchange with the neighbor, I was almost begging for a beer or some stronger alcoholic drink to forget about his existence.) Finally I waved her down and she said there was a hostess. I said "Oh OK well, it's my first time here. I didn't know that." At that point, I had only 45 minutes to eat and not get a ticket. It clearly wasnt in the cards with the snail-service. I saw that parking tickets were $50 and I wasn't going to gamble on this place most certainly. At this point, the whole vibe of the night was off and I just left the restaurant with my dog and all of the 20 lantern flies that were flying around. I went back to East End and reminded myself not to try new things again this week and bought some food at TJ's. Ambiance: 1/10 They have seemingly nice outdoor seating but it's so loud from the traffic from the road and you breathe in all the exhaust. Also, the lantern flies were still alive and well here. What could have been great, sucked because of our waitress. We went here for my birthday dinner and I was super excited because I haven't been in a while and had great experiences in the past. Upon sitting down, it took her about 10 minutes to come take our drink order. When she did we ordered Arancini but not drinks. We also asked her the weekly special and the soup. She just shook her head on the soup and I said do you mean it's not good and she said no don't get it (it was sweet potato I think). So then a few minutes later she came back and said can you remind me your drink order and I said we didn't have any. So she proceeded to take our order -again I ordered a veggie burger and she just looked at me and shook her head and said not to order it, that it wasn't good so I got a steak salad. I felt like I was rushed to order something then and she didn't give a recommendation. I asked her to bring an order of sweet potato fries early if possible because we had our 1 year old with us and she said she would absolutely bring that first. We had ordered another app when we ordered our meal and that came out with no fries or the Arancini. Then our dinners came and my steak salad was lettuce, steak and tomatoes so I sent it back and she said well they brought it out too early (it was missing onions and potatoes). I told her she forgot the Arancini and she pulled her paper out and said she didn't have it written down and I reminded her she forgot our drink order then she went oh yeah. But then still never brought it. I didn't even mention the fries. The manager came over and I let her know- she forgot two of our items and my salad came out wrong and she was like well I saw that salad and I said yeah that's after I sent it back. And to top it off, the steak was undercooked. The waitress never came to check on our drinks either. We were basically a forgotten table. After it all, she came over and I asked for our check. Then the waitress never brought the check. The manager came back over because the table was clear and saw the card out waiting and asked if we were waiting for our check. When she brought it over, I started to reiterate to her how disappointed I was and she tried to give us a gift card which I gave back and said I won't be back here. She just kept talking over me and I said now I am the customer and I can't be heard either so I'll write it on yelp. She did comp our meal - the only thing done correctly at this point. Outside the shitty service- the Amish chicken my boyfriend said was really good and the meatballs were good, so if they hired people who actually know how to take orders maybe it all would have been good had we actually gotten the food. We want to love this place. It's so cute and the menu is great and they have a nice outdoor seating area. This is the second time we've tried their Brunch and been totally underwhelmed by the service and the food. In all fairness, my fiancé tried the same dish twice (the Smoked Salmon Belly with potatoes, green beans, and egg) and realized that she really didn't like it the first time either. Here's why. They don't "clean" the fish so you end up with these rubbery, thick pieces of wet salmon skin mixed in with your salmon. It's very unappetizing. I tried the Benedict with smoked salmon and a side of potatoes and it was good. Our server was younger and didn't seem to have much experience. She was absent a lot and not very attentive when she was there as she forgot to bring waters after two requests and then had no reaction whatsoever when we pointed out the salmon skin issue. That was a real letdown because we were not rude about it all and it was obvious we left a lot of the dish uneaten. An apology would have been appropriate. read more

We asked the waiter for more sauce for the salmon.....15 minutes later, it came, salmon was gone. The manager came over and had the worst attitude ever. She gave the "we are short staffed" excuse. I had a quality meal here, and so did the rest of my family. I did not order much (just had the tuna Niçoise salad) but other individuals at my table ordered Dr. Bob's burger and the seasonal corn and shrimp salad. I thought that my tuna was cooked perfectly, just rare enough for me to enjoy and not over cooked. There were plenty of other vegetables in my salad. These included greens such as lettuce, as well as green beans. There were also perfectly cooked potatoes. However, I would say that the food is on the salty side. The Dr. Bob's burger seems to come in a large portion. Fries seemed to be crispy too. I noticed the meat was cooked well and the service we received was quality. In between people leaving tables, the staff sanitizes the table. Finally, the seasonal salad was fresh and light. The shrimps were a little small, but they were plentiful. Corn tasted fresh as well, but this dishes relies heavily on the vegetables. Overall, it's not bad, but a little expensive considering we just got a burger and salads. read more

Okay, we had one odd thing happen, we ordered the cheese plate and I made our server promise the 3 cheeses were St Andre, Taleggio, and Humbolt Fog. But when the cheese board arrived, they substituted a cheddar for the Humbolt Fog. I'm not one to complain, because they just ran out, but it was a bit strange she didn't ask us if we still wanted the plate. Our other food arrived, as ordered, and it was delicious. The specials are an excellent value. For dessert we had their specialty ice cream sandwich, which was delicious. Our waitress was attentive, helpful, and very professional. Terrible service. Went in today and the staff were outrageously rude. Our waiter gave our card to another table and once we told them it was gone the manager told us her staff did not make any mistakes. We told them to pull the footage of the tables and the waiter did give our card to another table and after no one apologized and the manager continued to disregard it. We had to cancel the card and not one person cared or tried to help. Horrendous people and while we waited for the manager the rest of the staff gave us dirty looks after they made the mistake and lost our card. read more

I met up with friends here recently hoping for a decent brunch and great conversation with said friends. While I got the great conversation, I sadly wasn't that impressed by Cornerstone. It didn't take long for me to start thinking that my meal here wouldn't be perfect. I had arrived a little bit late due to traffic, so everyone else in my group was wrapping up their order as I walked in. No big deal: I slid into a booth seat (right in front of the waitress, by the way) as she finished up with everyone else, picked up a menu, and I figured she'd be back in a minute to take care of me. No such luck - we had to flag her down later on to take my order, and you could see a look in her eyes of surprise when we did. Like, "Oh there's a new person here!" I admittedly wasn't impressed by this oversight but figured she might be having a bad day, and that I'd reserve judgement until the meal arrived. Sadly my food really wasn't that good, either. It was ok enough, but my ham and brie omelet was just much too salty to be considered anything other than ok; the same goes for the side of hash browns. I mean, I expect ham to be a little salty, but this tasted like they'd added salt to the entire omelet while it was being cooked. Even the brie had a hint of salt to it. Sad as it is to say this, the best part about the meal was the wheat toast with butter and jelly - the least salty item on my plate. By the way, that waitress' look of surprise returned at the end of the meal, when some of us had to point out to her after waiting for a bit that she hadn't taken about half of our checks back with her after we laid out our cash and cards for her; obviously we couldn't leave until we'd paid. Luckily for her no one in our party was the type to take advantage of her forgetfulness, and luckily for us we weren't in the biggest rush to clamor on out. Otherwise we'd've been significantly delayed. I do want to add that while this is not Cornerstone's fault, it admittedly doesn't help matters that this place is located in a part of town that's primarily permit parking only. Luckily I found a stretch of street to park on that allowed non-permit holders to park on Sundays, but if not for that I might have had a lot more trouble, especially given the chilly winter weather. Someone else found meters to park at, but with the snow being the way it's been I had no such luck spotting road-side meter parking. Overall I'd describe my time at Cornerstone as disappointing. Not outright awful and unacceptable - I've experienced worse - but unimpressive for sure, both in terms of food and service. I won't be rushing back out here any time soon. read more
