This place is delicious! For vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. I'm a huge fan of the french fries and mac n' cheese as a vegetarian option. The fries come with all these different dipping sauces that are delicious. Also, their beer list is out of this world, especially if you are into Belgian/Belgian style beers. There were many times I was more than willing to wait an hour or two to eat/drink at the Public House, but it's nice that reservations are now a thing because of the pandemic. read more

I've been coming here for years, and people always love this place it seems. I think the beer options here is the draw... I feel like it's a nicer version of Sunset. The food here is more upscale than at Sunset. The food is not great, in my opinion, but it is definitely above average. My favorite here is the fries ... and the sauce options are long. I love the garlic aioli. The fries are perfectly cooked... with the right crisp texture and comes out hot and perfectly salted. I also like the mussels here. The come in different sauces, and it isn't something that you can get a lot of places, so that's nice. I'm also a fan of their fish stew. It is tomato based and comes with a bunch of seafood. Today, the veggie burger was far too salty and unappetizing and the fries were just inedible: hard on the inside and oily and crispy on the outside. Nothing felt fresh! Although I'm not a regular beer drinker, my friends who are love the variety of beers Publick House offers. The good thing about this is that the bartenders and servers are very knowledgeable and can make good suggestions. Since it's fall, there are a lot of pumpkin flavored beers out there. If I drink a beer, my preferences are the fruity beers (Wachusett Blueberry, Watermelon ales...). I also generally like ciders and lambics. When I went there on Sunday, I was debating between the Original Sin Cider and the Pumpkin beer. I asked the bartender his opinion and he gave me samples of both. That was awesome! I was leaning towards the pumpkin beer, until I tried it. I would have been miserable if I chose that one instead of the cider. We had a big party (of 10) and asked if we could take the back table on the bar side. Even though the hostess said that there wasn't wait staff, we mentioned this to the bartender, and he made an extra effort to help us out. The service was great! He made sure we were taken care of, even though he was also working the bar (yes, we tipped accordingly.) I shared the fish n chips and the mussel appetizer with the bf. Visited my best friend who recently moved to Brighton. He recommended this place to hang out and get some beer. We got there around 8pm or so on Friday night; the place was already packed. We tried to make a reservation, and the host told us it would take at least an hour. We decided not to wait and about to walk out, but we got lucky when there were two spots open at the bar. We started with some local beer which was awesome. We decided to order some appetizers, and they were a let down. Poutine was the worst Poutine I've ever had. Meatballs were somewhat okay. Calamari was the only plate that we finished. So stick with beer if you come here for beer. ;) read more

This dish wasn't quite our favorite-- way too ridden with carrots. The dish was on carrot overload; "carrots w/hash". It also needed something green. Maybe some Brussel sprouts or kale on the side. The taste and seasoning was okay, but I wouldn't order it again. Nonetheless, I'd definitely eat there again. One not-so-great dish doesn't crucify the restaurant. I am very disappointed by the service here. My friend is not able to renew her ID because of Covid laws and has proof of an extension via the DMV. Yet the bartender and manager denied service. This is very unfortunate as she was severed at other bars and restaurants in the area. The manager claimed this was a Brookline regulation so I'm also disappointed that we were lied to. The Publick House was absolutely fabulous! A friend and I went on a beautiful Saturday evening and I could not have asked for a better night. The beer selection was phenomenal, if you're a beer snob that stop what you're doing and go here! From Vermont IPA's to local sours the menu was outstanding. They make ordering very easy with QR codes but you still get that dining experience ordering directly from waitstaff. On that note, the waitstaff was also incredible, I wish I could remember our servers name but he was so kind and attentive. We sat in the beer garden out back (a great space!) and at one point our space heater went out. Not a big deal it was a warm enough night but we alerted our waiter and he was on it right away. When he couldn't figure out how to fix it another staff member came out and within seconds we were warm and toasty again. The food was great as well. I got the buffalo cauliflower appetizer and it was delicious and the right portion for the price. My friend got the chicken sandwich and he raved about it all night. If you're looking for a place to have fun and enjoy a night out during the pandemic warm up, the Publick House is it. We will be back again very soon. Sit in the beer garden! Stopped for lunch on Monday (they open promptly at noon). We were promptly seated in Ebenezer's Tavern at a charming, comfortable table. Just a gorgeous setting. Attentive service throughout the meal. My wife ordered their baked onion soup (she said the best she's ever had; I sampled and the broth was outstanding) and their home-made potato chips to give them a try. Dangerous things these chips--so crispy and tasty--and ranch dressing dip. Could easily have made a meal of those. For my wife's main, she ordered their chicken liver pate salad which was very tasty and I ordered the open-faced turkey sandwich. I wanted all dark meat and that's what I received (which tells me that they really are roasting whole turkeys back there in the kitchen). The turkey was piled on top of cornbread and sausage stuffing served in a grilled piece of cornbread all covered in turkey gravy, with a side of whole berry cranberry sauce and incredibly a side of French fries (which given the amount of carbs already present on the plate seemed like overkill). The sandwich was excellent. Prior to our mains arriving we also received a complimentary bread basket which contained freshly baked rolls, two pieces of cornbread, and two "sticky buns." We lightly sampled these and they were lovely enough to take them home to accompany our dinner later that night. Hard to beat the atmosphere of this historic inn and it was good to see that the quality of the food lived up to the reputation for excellence at this establishment. read more

My husband and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon because I was craving pub food (don't judge; I had been on a healthy kick and wanted a dirty cheat meal). The restaurant was empty when we arrived (the old soul in me was delighted for a peaceful meal in an uncrowded space). We started with the dry-rubbed chicken wings, which were okay. The side of watery mustard seed sauce didn't do much; a creamy or more viscous sauce would have complemented the wings better. I ordered the burger and fries. There was a good selection of special toppings to choose from, for $1 each. I added caramelized onions and garlic mayo to mine. The beef patty was cooked to my order, but could use a little more flavor. Today, Saturday 530pm, we called asking for a table "in 15 minutes", the person who answered said "we don't take reservations for the next 15 min, but come over there is space". Great, popular local spot in brookline on beacon st. The outside seating is nice in the summer. The tap list is extensive, unique, and phenomenal for beer drinkers. They have a few vegan options, including the impossible burger that are pretty solid as well. I recommend trying the roasted red pepper hummus appetizer. read more

We just wanted some drinks and try the mac and cheese so we sat at the bar area. There are 2 bar areas. One of them were full when we got there. There are outdoor seating as well. The mac and cheese was delicious. You can add many things with different extra charges. I added bacon for $3. They were generous on the bacon too. Bacon were cut in cubes, not slices, just how I like it. It came in a hot cast iron skillet. Perfect place to grab a drink, have a chat and delicious bar food. After a uninviting experience at The Ellis Room, we hopped an uber over to this spot for some late night grub & brews and a much more inviting atmosphere. The gal bartender and other staff were super cool. We had some good conversations. We chatted with either a manager or owner for quite some time. Dude was super chill. We enjoyed chatting with him. We grabbed some items from their late night menu. This was about 1:30am, so it was as good as it was going to get, for that hour. We ordered some white bean chili, a turkey sandwich, and some pita chips with hummus. It was alright, again, decent for late night munchies. Love this place! First couple of times I didn't get it. Crowded, dark, service seemed uninterested..the beer list was very heavy on Belgian beers. Lacking in local beers. Then I found out they had Trillium beer on tap, so we decided to give it another try. Sooooo glad I did. Beer list is now divided between local and not.. Lots of local beers and still tons of very hard to find Belgian beers. But all are world class.. No garbage. The thing about this place you will notice is its full of regulars. The bartenders remember you, the servers remember you, it's not pretentious. A rare find.. The service I mistook for being uninterested, was actually just being real genuine caring service. Not kiss your ass annoying nor non-existent. Just observant, and real.. Oh yeah, the burgers are unbelievable. The mac and cheeses are sooooo rich. Bone marrow crostini is heaven. Holy WOW! Five stars for this place! Atmosphere: the inside was insanely noisy (hey, the Sox were playing the Yankees), but we were there for a special occasion (yes, dear readers, the Vegaquarian and the Meat-Eater have now been together for FIVE YEARS of love and happiness) and wanted a cozier atmosphere, so we chose to sit at one of the outdoor tables on the sidewalk. That turned out to be a great choice (ok, not that I didn't care about the game, but the Sox were already totally losing, and it really wouldn't have been very romantic to watch the Yankees win . . . ), very romantic on a beautiful summer evening. Beer: oh HELL yes. The beer was ridiculously good. If you love good beer and have not been to The Publick House, get thee to The Publick House and check out their beer menu. And do NOT miss the "Rules" section at the bottom of the beer list -- it is hilarious. Food: excellent. The Mac and Cheese was super (as pretty much Every Other Reviewer Ever has already mentioned). If you love Mac and Cheese, go here and eat some. The base mac and cheese is great, and you can add an impressive array of interesting things to it (standard fare such as broccoli, peas, mushrooms, etc., but also more unusual stuff such as scallops, cherry peppers, roasted garlic, etc.). Monk Frites: the dipping sauces are so good. The frites themselves were very tasty (and the portion you get is enormous, we did not even come close to finishing it even though we totally mowed it). The only strange thing about them was that many (most?) of the frites were very small. Like an inch long. So the only practical way to eat them was with a fork. But they were so good that I did not even care about that. The Meat-Eater had the meatballs (which he liked quite well) and the Fish N Chips (which was also a hit). He doesn't like tartar sauce or coleslaw (ever, anywhere), so I ended up (as usual) eating his coleslaw (which was yummy) and taking his tartar sauce (lemon-caper tartar sauce, so good) to dip more frites into. He liked his dinner, but I was too busy mowing the mac and cheese to get any more specific feedback from him about it. Suffice it to say that it was about 500 times better than the Fish N Chips at Jasper White's Summer Shack (which I've also reviewed). I also had a side Caesar, which was very good. Service: Other reviews indicate that the service is "hit or miss" -- I guess in our case it was HIT. Our server was fan-freakin-tastic. Her name is Sarah. Since I've only been here the one time so far, I can't comment on any of the other servers, but basically, if I were to try to make a Top Ten Servers Ever list based on decades of eating out, Sarah would be on that list. It wasn't even that the service was completely perfect (you may have seen the review where I rave about the perfect service at Biltmore Bar & Grill). It wasn't perfect. But, you know how sometimes when a server makes a mistake, they just don't even give a damn, other times they apologize, and other (all too rare) times, they not only apologize but also go way out of their way to make it up to you? Well, this was what happened: Sarah made a very small mistake (I asked her a question about one of the mac and cheese toppings, and she gave me the wrong answer), but it was totally not a big deal. But she felt really bad about it and brought us a round of Fernet Branca that I am not positive, but strongly suspect, she paid for out of her own pocket. And seriously, other than one not-very-important wrong answer to a question, she did everything Just Right. I kind of love her. I mean, she obviously Actually Gave A Damn about our meal and our experience at the restaurant, which already puts her way more than average. She had no idea it was a special occasion for us, but the way she consistently went out of her way to make sure everything was great would have made for a wonderful time even had it not been a special occasion. As it was, it was Sarah's great service that took what would already have been a great evening and a great meal, and turned it into one of the best meals we've ever had in the Boston area. A wonderful memorable anniversary dinner that we'll be gushing about for years to come, I expect. Beer Advocate calls this place "one of the top ten places in the world to have a beer." Food and Wine magazine says it's got the "Best Mac & Cheese in the U.S." The Boston Globe calls it the best beer bar in Boston. We agree. Go to this place. It ROCKS. read more

Dear PH, I thought I loved you Publick House, until yesterday when you treated me oh so poorly. You made me wait for an hour and 20 minutes for a table at 8pm on a Wednesday. Your server wasn't that friendly and the food took another hour to prepare. I still remember the good old days. Your delicious macaroni and cheese is like no other. You offered me eclectic add-ons (like truffle oil or asparagus) to my already superior mac and cheese. I always appreciated your giving nature. I have to admit, you were really good last night. You impressed me with the fish of the day (written in your crazy old timey Belgium print). My salmon was succelent, with sliced potatoes cooked in loads of olive oil and sprinkled with gruyere cheese. The dish was costly ($16) but worthwhile. And the lumpy gravy beer ($5) you served me paired nicely with the light fish dauced in a beer mustard sauce. I will give you another chance Publick House. Only if you promise to show me the respect I deserve. Tell me what beers go nicely with what dish. Act interested when I tell you my stories of climbing up a snowy hill in Munich to try one of your delicious beers that you offered to me last night on tap. Just a reminder that the portions here are gargantuan! My Flemish beef stew (which was rich and delicious) was served in what looked like a trough. I got an entire baguette with it. My friend's meatloaf and mashed potatoes were enough for nearly 3 people. The chicken and linguine special was also ridiculously large. After an appetizer of Publick House's excellent pommes frites, which was plenty for three to share, there was no way I could finish all that food--nor should I attempt to do so if I value my health. But everything was delicious, and the beverage selection was, as always, fun and exciting. The fresh apple cider (non-alcoholic) was delicious. So were all of the other ales we tried. This place continues to be a favorite. And by going at about 5:30 on a Saturday, we were able to get a table as soon as we walked in. Nice. read more

I have a running joke with a couple of people I know that the Publick House hates its customers because they love beer just too damn much. However, I always go back to the Publick House like Whitney to Bobby and I never turn down an invite to taste the House's glorious--good-to-the-last-drop-beer. Sorry guys, this is a beer bar and part of the fun of the Publick House is waiting in line for a table behind four or five other people who aren't quite sure what the deal is, being kicked out of the "Dining" section because all you want to do is drink beer, and trying to figure out why everyone keeps coming back. Well, if you come before 8pm you probably know the Publik House isn't always table-wrestling--it's a very chill, comfortable place to go and enjoy great beer in their original beer glasses. I don't even mind waiting for a table after 8 most of the time because as soon as you get a place at the tables, you're gonna be just fiiiiiiiiiiine. I noticed a lot of people keep pointing out the food isn't up to par---well you might want to hold out on eating somewhere else just yet because if you're not going to eat you have two options-elbow your way into the big drinking table up front or sitting at the bar or standing for a long time. So, I'd at least order some beer fries, rack of ribs or mussels and take a seat. The beers are worth it, and sometimes when I'm feeling like a beer snob, it feels good to know that lawnmower beer (and thusly retarded beer behavior) is out of the question at the Publick House. So, get tough' and drink up because the beer is solid and worth the wait. (For a more chill atmosphere and a strong selection-- see my review on Bukowskis!) Publick House has an incredible beer menu. I'm pretty sure that's the reason people come here. The food isn't bad either. Their french fries with garlic mayo is addictive! Their mac and cheese is a favorite among my friends, and there are tons of add-ins that can personalize it just for you. I had mine with chicken and peas, and it was really yummy. Another friend tried scallop and bacon, and yet another had bacon and mushrooms! All were really yummy. And I don't think a single one of us finished our meals, either. Not because we didn't love our food, but because the portions are huge!
