Didn't know they served Dinner at 5... we arrived at 4:30 for our 4:30 reservation..... we had been traveling and decided to skip lunch and go to dinner... so we ordered an app off the lunch menu... now 4:50.... but still waited to order off the Dinner menu well after 5. Was told the kitchen will not prepare anything until 5...... moving on......... Went to the salad bar which was plentiful and so many good choices. We both Ordered the turkey dinner. While seated outdoors on the patio I was attacked by a swarm of bees. I was stung multiple times while attempting to bat away the onslaught of attackers. Seems like there was a nest housed somewhere in the decking. A waitstaff came to my assistance by asking me if I want to be seated inside. As I was still waiting for my entree ( kitchen had been slow due to early dinner rush) I opted to take it to-go. No one, including waitstaff, hostess, management seemed to be concerned that there was a bee problem outside and that had I been allergic to bee stings the outcome could've been far worse. There was no apology or offer of some culinary compensation. Bring your epi-pen if you go there. read more

Longtime customer of this restaurant, but was decidedly disappointed with this evening's meal. Dining companion order a strip steak, medium. I ordered the same entree, medium rare. Companion's steak had not a whisper of pink whatsoever, while mine had only the faintest flush of pink. When notified of the steaks being "well done", she replied they had been having other issues with the person on the grill. She offered to bring me a new steak, I declined. I sincerely hope that the management spends some time retraining the cook. This is too nice a restaurant to allow this inept grilling to continue. read more

The staff were very friendly. The main dining room was dark in decoration. The staff recommended the tortellini with mushrooms and prosciutto. The flavors were off. The prosciutto was heated too much so that it was dry and wrinkled . Prosciutto is smoked and should be tender this was not tender. The cream sauce on the tortellini clashed with the cheese in the pasta. It just didn't work. The salad bar was a salad bar much like you would find in 1985. No creativity. The fresh bread was warm and tasty and the maple butter was sweet and flavorful, a nice touch. If you want large portions and endless generic salad bar then this is the place for you. The dessert is why I'm giving it 3 stars. Based on the dessert alone, though, I would have given this place a 1. I ordered the smores cake. The crust was graham crackers, but it had a weird aftertaste to it. The chocolate cake part just tasted like sugar bread, but with less flavor. And my "torched" marshmallow was just placed on top of the cupcake-sized cake. It was not toasted or anything. Just a "raw" marshmallow thrown on top. My family and I have made the Publyk House one of our go-to places whenever we are in Bennington, Vt, and want to go to dinner. We love sitting on the deck overlooking the Bennington Monument and the sun as it sets behind the mountains. And we have always enjoyed our meals. However, the last several visits we made (this summer and two times this past September 2023) have left me disappointed. This summer, I ordered one of my favorite meals: the meat loaf, and I thought perhaps it was my imagination that it didn't seem as good as I remembered. This Labor Day Weekend, I ordered it again. And again it seemed dry, and the mound of mashed potatoes it was placed upon were saturated with melted cheese masking the taste and texture of the mashed potatoes. It just didn't taste the same as in the past. This past weekend, I ordered the mushroom ravioli. It was like getting a bowl of mushroom soup so full that the ravioli was hardly visible. The delicate taste of the mushrooms was masked by the overabundance of the "sauce." Even the waitress made a comment about the dish and how much sauce there was. I only ate 2 of the raviolis and took the rest home. Even scraping some of the sauce off didn't seem to help much when I reheated it. I really hope the recent meals I've had there this summer was a fluke, but I'm wondering since it has been three times in a row that I've encountered this. I've noticed that the portions have shrunk as well, but the prices have increased. I'm sure that is a direct result of the inflated costs of food these past few years. I'd like to say that this restaurant was great. But I can't. The only thing that is great is the view. And the view from the deck is fantastic. Looking southwest out to the Bennington Monument and the low mountains you get to enjoy marvelous sunsets. This is the 2nd time I've eaten there in the past three months and, yes, the food is good, again, not great. Something I don't understand, though. People here have raved about the salad bar. OK. The salad bar is....it's a salad bar. No big deal, no interesting items, nothing that any other salad bar has. But that's not my issue. The salad bar comes with any entree. If you want just the salad bar, you can do that as well. But if you add a protein (steak, shrimp, salmon) the up charge makes the dish more expensive than the average entree. Doesn't make sense to me. But then I didn't go that route, someone else at my table did. Should have done the math first I suppose. But the view is great. As far as service goes, well, when I arrived the hostess started with: "your reservations were for a half hour ago." (had reserved a table on the deck...you know...for the view). "We have a party coming in 45mins from now " This was at 5.30 on a Friday. Not wanting to be rushed, I asked: "I do not want to rushed. If it's a problem, we'll go some place else" "No, not a problem, we'll just call that party and tell them of the time shift".....well, if they were going to call the other party to come later, why didn't they call me to ask if I was going to show up? The waitstaff was very slow, but since the view was great, it was bearable...up to a point. The waitstaff did apologize and say that she was assigned three other tables, in the dining room, on the other side of the building. (??? why was she given this table then???). You go to the Publyk House for one of three things: 1) The view. From their expansive deck, you get a view of most of Southern Vermont's mountains. If you want to eat with a view, this is where you go. 2) The salad bar. This is the only restaurant in Bennington with a salad bar, and it's a really good one at that. They have several green beds to choose from, beets, nuts, dried fruits, several proteins, and lots of other veggies. You can get the salad as an entree for about $10 or add it onto a dinner and spend much less. 3) Trivia night or live music. The bar is small, but they program the hell out of it. They have an ongoing trivia night once a week, live bands regularly, and host big party groups in there too sometimes. The entrees are fine. The service is always great. We have eaten here multiple times and the food is a hit and miss. The prices have gone up and the portions have gotten smaller. My roast turkey dinner was edible but not even close to the standard that this restaurant should have. The turkey was dry and one piece was so dry and hard that it was curled. The stuffing was good, though slightly salty, mashed potatoes ( well still trying to figure out if there were any on the plate ) same goes for the vegetables and cranberries. My family's entrees were similar. The wings and salad bar were a winner. Most of all our waitresses was great. I called at 4:00 looking for a 4:30 table since we spent the day antiquing and never got to stop for lunch. She said I can sit you at 4:30 but dinner specials start at 5. I thought to my self, relaxing have a cocktail and appetizer it would be 5:00 before you realize. She said that's to long to sit at the table. ‍. I got a 5:00 reservation. Was seated in the back dining room with a beautiful view. Our server came over and went over our order. We ordered the fried oysters and the calamari. She gave us the oysters but no calamari. Never came back to our table. When our dinners came we asked what happened to the calamari. She looked at her pad and apologized. I also asked if we could get refills since they were empty for awhile. The salad bar was good. I think that's the winner for everyone here. Fill up on the salad bar because the king cut PrimeRib wasn't so king after you trimmed all the fat. It was cooked more medium then rare which I ordered. My daughter got the shrimp and petite steak and she enjoyed the garlic sauce very much. I gotta say right on with the fried oysters too. I liked the decor and the lodge feel. I had fish and chips which wasHORRIBLE. No fish all breading. Gave me a large portion but when it is bad who wants to eat more? I had the warm apple crisp which was ice cold...not warm. The BBQ platter was too sweet, a little tanginess in the sauce for either the beans or meat would have helped a lot. And the fries had no salt on them. Great service and great food This place is very romantic you can either sit in the bar or the dining area. There are 2 menus you can choose from the bar menu or dining room menu. I have been visiting Bennington, Vermont every summer over the last four years and never had a great meal before I visited the Publyk House a few weeks ago! Beautiful view of the surrounding Green Mountains from the outside deck, which you can also enjoy from the air conditioned dining room! My friend and I had the "skirt" burgers and they were absolutely delicious!! If you are a cheese lover definitely give this burger a try. They put shredded cheddar all around the burger on the grill and it crisps up scrumptiously! We also both had mojitos which were well muddled and so refreshing during the summer heat. This place is absolutely amazing. We felt welcome the minute we walked in. I would recommend reservations if you're going during the peak times and anytime on the weekend. We started off with the shrimp cocktail. Great presentation and the cocktail sauce was very good. The salad bar was a great and was freshly stocked every few minutes. My wife got the turkey dinner and it looked like thanksgiving day dinner. My wife said it was very good. I got the ribeye steak and it was cooked to perfection. I always order it medium rare and it was perfect. The steak was so good no steak sauce was needed. I was pleased with the Publyk House. Great atmosphere; designed to look like a barn on the outside and a trendy country house on the inside. Very spacious too; it appeared as though they had a ton of tables and dining rooms, with some out on a nice deck as well. The food was perfect: we had the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which was absolutely delightful with a thick, creamy cheese sauce, crunchy texture, and a decent amount of lobster bits (though I would have liked to have more, but the amount was better than most lobster Mac servings at other restaurants). We also shared the clam chowder, which was different in that it must of had bacon in it, which gave it a smoked taste. The salad bar, which comes with your meal (awesome), was also lovely, with real greens (not iceberg lettuce), and plenty of toppings - even a plethora of nuts. I also tried the scallops, as a family member ordered them, which gave me immediate entree envy: they were absolutely perfect! Sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, cooked-to-perfection scallops with the best sauce EVER. It made me wish I'd ordered the scallop entree. I will definitely come back to this place to order the scallops if I'm ever back in Bennington. The service was good too, even though when we were there, they were incredibly busy because it was graduation night. Overall, though the meals aren't cheap, they're not overly expensive, either; about $20-$30 per plate, so I'd definitely come back to Publyk House. read more

Publyk House was the first restaurant my husband and I ordered from when we moved to Vermont, and it will always have a special place in our hearts. Aside from the fact that their food is spectacular, the people are really what set Publyk House apart from other food establishments. We're two young kids (as the locals love to call us) who had absolutely no dining wear when we moved, and we were graciously given two mugs from which to drink our delicious apple ciders that first night. That gesture alone is imprinted in my memory, and that and the mouth-watering food is what keeps us coming back for more almost weekly (sometimes even twice a week...). At risk of accidentally excluding anyone, we love to see all our friends at Publyk House and feel so lucky to have found not only some great eats (we especially love the pulled pork sandwich, the Tavern burger, fish and chips, and literally any of their desserts), but also people who make us feel like a part of the family. Great find for good old comfort food. Nice outdoor deck with great view. Had crab cakes ( always iffy in a land locked state) but they were surprisingly good. The crispy burger served with l,t,o and a delicious crispy ring of VT cheddar cheese is delicious albeit I asked for medium and it was more med well. Our waitress was phenomenal - excellent and attentive service. We ordered the Stone Kitchen Pasta, and it was delicious -just the comfort food we needed on a damp rainy night.
