I have been coming to this place to get a haircut for over a year now. I think it is a great place and I love the atmosphere. More specifically, I come for the excellent haircuts that i have been getting. Which leads to my next point. I disagree with Henry M. and his harsh review of Ken. Every time I come and get my haircut I specifically request Ken. I am extremely particular with my haircuts and pay close attention to detail. Ken listens to what is being requested by the customer and ensures that the customer is satisfied. In addition, I do not have to explain to him every time how I would like my hair to be cut. Although he has numerous clients, he remembers what I want and all I need to ask for is the "usual". As proof that he is a great barber, I relocated to Washington DC. a year ago but still make the 45 Mile commute to get my haircut from Ken. I wouldn't think twice to recommend him to anyone looking for a great barber. read more

Don't usually write reviews, but had a fantastic massage so I thought I should share! Just moved to Baltimore and asked a male friend for a recommendation. I was a little apprehensive at first, not only because of the price, but also because it obviously geared more towards men. Ladies don't worry! There are tons of amenities for us! Lots of love! I went for a massage, and let me tell you, it was FANTASTIC! Go see AMY. She was really great. She took her time and focused on the areas that I had the most concern. I have been getting massages for years and never once fallen asleep and this was the first time that I could feel myself drifting in to slumber. I will definitely go back. I've been coming here for over a year for my haircuts and have never been disappointed. I can make appointments online and have never waited more than 5 minutes before my cut. I had wanted to try a full straight-razor shave for some time, and I finally had the opportunity this past weekend. The experience was excellent. Frank did a masterful job; he is patient and meticulous, and he explained each step as he did it. He started with two lathers and hot towels, followed by a pre-shave oil. Then he performed two straight razor passes with hot lathers, one with the grain and one across. Finally, he applied a post-shave oil and a cool towel to relax the blood vessels. It was a relaxing and comfortable experience that left me feeling fresh. Frank was friendly and engaged in casual conversation without prompting me for responses while he's drawing a razor across my face. It was well worth the $45. All in all, this is a place I recommend. The service is fantastic and I've never had a cut I didn't like. I haven't yet used their tailoring services, but I plan to try that soon as well. The straight-razor shave is a bit expensive for frequent visits, but it's definitely something I'll do again for special occasions. read more

Had a great first experience at QG this week! Went in for a girls day to get massages and drinks at their restaurant, Clock. I had a 30 minute massage with Mandy and it was AWESOME. Unlike other massage experiences I've had, Mandy actually listened to what my problem areas are and where to focus. I will definitely be back for a 60 minute one next time! After climbing the career ladder pretty quickly, a mentor told me that if I wanted to be a real mover and shaker that I needed to start looking the part. I saw an ad for QG in Baltimore Mag and decided to check it out. What a good move. I got a great haircut. After my first cut, I also got some advice on how to style it each morning. Knowing this was uncharted territory they kept it simple, and amazingly - I actually do it each day. When I go, I get Jacqui to cut my hair. She is friendly and does a great job. I have never been one to like going to the babrber shop. Now I schedule regular appointments every 4 weeks. Just had another one today. If you really want to be pampered - get a shave. You'll leave there feeling like you belong on a GQ cover. The atmosphere is cool too. It's like a man's dream hideout. Beer, liquor, pool, cards, magazines and TVs. The prices are right too. I have spent about the same at a chain place before. Take my advice - go and ask for Jacqui. read more

I can't speak to the other services offered by the QG, but we are happy with the dress shirt my husband had altered by the tailor, Earle Bannister. It was a quick and painless experience, and the shirt looked good when done. Side note: My husband had looked into getting an entire suit made here, but ultimately went with a slightly less expensive option. If we were to do it over again, though, I think coming straight to the QG might've been better since the dress shirt we got altered was made by that other tailor. Mr. Bannister is, shall we say, opinionated. My husband is not very style-savvy and made a comment about the price, to which Mr. Bannister replied, "This is not Express." I didn't get the impression that it was meant to be rude, just that he was, according to my husband, a bit frou frou. It's in a good way. He picked out some pocket squares for us to look at when he saw that the one my husband was considering didn't necessarily go with the rest of his ensemble. read more

I really WANT to like this place, but after two less than stellar experiences, I just can't give it a good review. The first time I visited was back in Feb, so I really don't remember what it was I didn't like, other than there were a lot of stray long hairs behind my ears. I figured I would give it a second chance. I just returned from that second chance and was completely under-whelmed. I booked online, which is very convenient, but I booked a haircut with a wash and didn't get the wash. I figured after the stylist started cutting that they did the wash after the cut (some places do that) and the next time I thought of it, I was already done. I also specifically asked for an eyebrow trim (they get a little bushy...) and realized when my wife noticed after I got home that the trim was forgotten, too. I like the straight razor shave on the neckline, but lo and behold, I have a bunch of stray long hairs behind my ears, which is just IRRITATING! The manicure was ok. Nothing special, could have done a better job on the cuticles. Maybe I am being too critical, the building is nice and the chairs are comfy, but if you really want a great experience for your hair, just take the extra hour and drive down to the Grooming Lounge in DC. In the future, I will probably just head down there or find a 10 dollar place up where I live (even Supercuts is capable of getting behind the ears)... read more

I moved to the Baltimore area about a year ago, and when I started looking for a barbershop to frequent, the QG was recommended to me. I have never been so happy with a barbershop before. I didn't know someone COULD be this excited about a barbershop. I find myself recommending it to all of my friends, and when I took my groomsmen for shaves there before my wedding in October, everyone was duly impressed. The haircuts and shaves I've had have been exceptional. They have an obviously talented staff that pays attention to all of the details.The Quintessential Gentleman just gets it all right: a great atmosphere; warm, friendly, genuine, and talented staff; high quality products for sale; a wide range of services available; and even a free beer. It's heaven. I love coming into the shop. It's near my office, there's always a friendly face, and there's a bottle of Jameson there with my name on it. Seriously. If you bring in a bottle of booze, they'll keep it behind the bar for you and serve it however you like it. It's like home, only I don't write my name on my booze. Well, not all the time, at least. I always see Brendan for my haircuts and shaves, and he is a fantastic barber. He does great work--he knows exactly what you want when you explain it, and executes it perfectly. He's really friendly and easy-going, and I find myself relating to him really easily. He's fun to be with, and I think of him as a friend. He makes a haircut something to savor. I never knew that I could feel this way about a haircut, but seeing it written down, I realize that's precisely how I feel. I savor it. How could you not? It comes with a straight-razor shave on the back of your neck and little neck massage. It's turned something that I viewed as a necessity into something I view as a luxury. (Actually, don't book with Brendan. I need to make sure he has some openings on his schedule.) I've always received excellent and comfortable haircuts, but really, I return because I really like spending time with the staff. They're genuine people. They have a quick laugh, an easy smile, and they're not just faking it for you. They do an incredible job-- and it does not go unnoticed. I have been a client for a number of years. The owner is a very nice guy who really enjoys high-end men's grooming products and apparel. When you walk in the door, you will see that he has stocked the place with a lot of good men's products at decent prices. The staff is friendly, always offers you a beer of your choice (or, if you want, you can leave your own bottle and have a drink each time you come in) and directs you to the well-stocked waiting area complete with a pool table and Wii. The decor sports plenty of dark wood paneling and "manly" knick knacks. The barbers are all very nice folks. I have had my haircut by about six of them, and I'd say the quality ranges from just above average to excellent. Each spends time with you before the cut trying to zero in on what you want -- sometimes they give you a wow-you-read-my-mind cut and other times it's just a so-so everyday thing. I find it's often hard to explain exactly what I want, and think something gets lost in translation depending on who is cutting your hair. The shop, unfortunately, is expensive. They recently raised prices from $25 to $30 for the basic cut. They did add in a wash to the basic cut. But when you add a tip of 20 percent, the cut is closer to 40 than 30. On top of that, my favorite barber recently left the shop. It is getting to the point where I'm not really able to justify going there any more. However, they have been very good to me, so I cannot fault them too much. If you are a high end guy with the budget to match, this place is for you. read more

As another reviewer said, I really want to like this place, but I just can't. I've been there four times, and have gotten only one passable haircut. It is almost impossible to judge the quality of a cut while you're still sitting in the chair, because everything's flat. It always seem half-decent while I'm looking in the hand mirror. When I get home and take a shower, though, it immediately becomes apparent that there is no consistency whatsoever in the length of the hair on top. The worst part is, I don't even get a scissor cut. How is it possible to so badly mess up a clipper cut? How can you give me a haircut with ten different lengths on different parts of my head when you're using clippers? It's incredibly frustrating. Everyone there is very nice, including the barbers. But being nice and kindly offering me something to drink doesn't make up for the fact that I'm ponying up a lot more money than the average establishment and getting as bad or worse a haircut. I wish everyone there the best, but I won't be returning. One decent haircut in four tries just doesn't cut it. read more

Was expecting a positive experience, but I didn't meet any quintessential gentlemen here, and didn't leave feeling like one either. Perhaps a name change is in order. What I did meet was a guy who struck me as self-important male diva, and receptionists who seemed too distracted to helpfully answer questions. If you like plastic people, who carry an air of superiority and pompous attitudes, then you can roll the dice, but as for me and my house... that's not what I expect from a barbershop (or male grooming salon).
