I have been going to QG's for about 3 years now and I have to say if you are looking for more in a haircut look no further. QG's offers men a place to relax, shoot some pool, and of course get a haircut. The staff is friendly and attentive to you, just good people. They just expanded their hours and are open on the weekends. No only that they are opening a spa upstairs with a sauna and Cigar room!! I took all of my groomsmen there when I got married and they were all treated like kings. I have to say this is a great place. read more

The QG has been my go to since I moved to Baltimore. Being someone who lives and works in downtown their Calvert location is perfect for being able to plan a quick haircut during lunch or on the way home after work. Staff is always timely and accommodating. I've also used their tailor when I was leaving for a wedding in two days he made all my alterations perfectly and they helped me pick out a bow tie. I went from place to place for a haircut in Baltimore, and was never quite satisfied. I asked around at work, and the prise for Quintessential Gentleman was deafening. I figured this meant I just had to check it out... Well I made an appointment, and walked in. They asked to take my coat, and gave me a beer as soon as I arrived, and lead me upstairs where I played pool while I waited. The haircut itself takes place in relatively private places, each with their own TV. I brought in a photo for Jacquie, and half an hour later, my hair looked just like the photo. Since then (over a year ago, now) I always go to QG for my haircuts, and have tried the shave, wash, and massage as well. Had a great a great experience at the Downtown Baltimore location. The decor is pretty masculine and very comfortable with rich leathers and neutral tones and I didn't feel like a fish out of water. It's literally like a one stop grooming shop for dudes which is much appreciated. Awesome haircut - the stylist listened to what I wanted and did a fantastic job. Not to mention he was hilarious. The place is extremely upscale and is immensely professional, yet the price was great, just $25. I had a 90-minute deep tissue massage by one of their massage therapists, and she did a great job too. I just moved here from SF and was hard pressed to find a go-to place... first trie some Aveda salon in Towson that was more expensive and way less cool, and my hairline came out crooked and I swear I had bald spots. Took myself to Lauren and she fixed that janky cut and was even gracious while she did it "well... it's not THAT bad" as she almost kept a straight face. I lived across the street from the QG for a year and made the mistake of waiting to go until I left the neighborhood. Glad I finally made it in though! I went to Latrice for a 30 minute facial and she is AMAZING. She is very knowledgeable about skin and taught me so much about skin care (and what I'd been doing wrong). She's great to talk to and teaches you about skin care in a way that doesn't make you feel bad about all the ways you've been mistreating your skin. I will definitely be back! read more

I sent my son to the Hunt Valley location for a shave and neck trim. He made an appointment and was told it would cost $15. I was under the impression this was a quality place from their website, but was I ever wrong. The "stylist" messed up his hair--an obvious mistake--and then at check out said it was $30 instead of $15--without giving a reason. And then she asked for a tip. Unbelievable. Never again. This place is so awesome! So I took my boyfriend their for a massage and I was able to get a manicure while I waited. The manicure was good, the polish wasn't great but I didn't expect it to be. This place caters to men being taken care of and enjoying themselves and I LOVE IT! The concept of this establishment really blew me away and I wish there were more like it. Paid an arm and a leg for him to ruin 2 pairs of pants, and a third was not hemmed at all. 2 other shirts were done incorrectly, and will require even more money to fix. Please do not waste your time or money going here. Not only is every service overpriced, but now I've had two very negative experiences at QG. 1. The barber SNIPPED MY BOYFRIEND'S EAR during a simple, regular haircut. That was a bloody wound for a week. 2. They incorrectly charged a haircut to his account, and argued with me like I had to pay for it when it was clearly their mistake (eventually a manager corrected this for me). Just a cheap veneer on a typical salon. I scheduled a buzz cut and Quintessential Beard Trim for one o'clock. I have no idea how they are I didn't get that far. I arrived 20 minutes early excited by the website and reviews, what a let down. I was greeted by a disinterested staff member who could barely be bothered with me. He vaguely indicated where beer could be had, and said I could wait for Tiffany in the entranceway, thus discharge of the check in duties I ceased to exist. I poked around and found the fridge with beer grabbed one and sat down. No interaction from that point on, listened to the shoe shine guy watch football on his phone and waited. About 15 till 1 Tiffany's appointment before me checks out and gets shown around the place. I might as well be invisible, at 1:06. I ask the time and put on my jacket and left. If you are expecting to be treated like a gentleman this is not the place, clearly they do not understand the level of customer service and regard a "client" should expect. Mary is detail oriented, fun to talk to, and consistent every time. I am getting married in a week, and I would do anything (short of the flight to Baltimore) to have Mary cut my hair. So i gave this place 4 stars rather than 5 because that's how I roll! Well really I gave them 4 because there were areas that could improve. Overall I had a GREAT experience here. My wife gifted me a $200 gift certificate last year for Valentine's Day, so i thought I'd use it for my birthday before it expired. I went with the $205 spa package. That package came with a facial, pedicure, manicure, and deep tissue massage. First things first, when you walk in you are greeted by gorgeous White Nubian queens. Not only that but they offer you a beer (or whatever type of beverage you prefer). So i check in for my appointment and i am directed to go upstairs to the lounge. There's a pool table, TVs, a small space to practice your putting, etc... After a brief wait and filling out a form my adventure begins. First stop is with Ariel to get a facial. I have never experienced a facial but let me tell you guys what! That was a wonderful experience, so much that I am going to have to make it a monthly experience. I fell in love with that lady... i mean service about 8 times in that hour or so. She did wonders for my skin. I left that room feeling like a bacon and egg sandwich (That means good). After that I went to get an "Executive" manicure and pedicure. The lady that performed those services was very nice and friendly, talkative, in a good way. However i just didn't see what was so executive like with the service. I get pedicures and manicures (Mostly pedicures) often from different types of places so I wasn't too impressed over the rest. Next stop was with Amy to get my full body massage. Do i really need to explain this? I mean its a full body massage, it's pretty hard to mess that up. I felt a lot of tension released. The only con to this place is the parking. You can't fault them for that. Pay close attention to the websites notes about parking. They do validate some parking garages so make sure you go to those. I ended up paying $24 in parking when I get done because I didn't pay attention. All in all I'd say this is a place every man should go to at least once if afforded the opportunity. WORST haircut of my entire life! To be fair, I went to QG a few weeks back for a trim by her and it was descent. This time, not so much. I had been growing my hair for about 2 months. It WAS about 5 inches on top and 1 inch on the sides. I wanted to barely trim the top and get a LOW fade. Lauren decided to give me a super high and tight! She ended up shaving (not even fading) the sides ALL the way up my head and leaving the top how it was. Picture those really bad military cuts with a landing strip on top. I was absolutely baffled as to why she would do this and when I questioned her I got a very snippy "Well, that's what you asked for" in between yawns. Not only was the cut not even close to what I asked for, It was not blended at all. I figured I'd give Lauren the benefit of the doubt, so I paid for it (with an undeserved 6 dollar tip). After going home, washing my hair and attempting to put product in it, I realized how horrible the haircut actually was. On the left side, where the length meets the shaved part, it was completely jagged and went from an attempted fade to a 2 inch side bang! On my right side, I had a huge bald spot!!! (from the poor attempt at a fade). This was completely unacceptable so I went back. The front desk ladies were very nice. And when I showed them my hair, they were taken back a bit and seemed to care. I informed them that now what I need is to shave the top down and regrow everything. They set me up with Ken because "he's the best guy to fix this". WRONG! He did see how bad my hair was and did try to fix it but would not shave the top down to fix it, even after I repeatedly told him too. He wanted to salvage the "fade" regardless of what I thought. Well, he was unable too but try telling him that. The fade is still just as jagged and un-blended but much higher (which I didn't know was possible. Long story short. I will NEVER go here again! Lauren simply does not know how to cut hair and Ken cant fix it. It cost me 46 dollars to look like Bert from Sesame Street. Im sick to my stomach. read more

Haircut review: I've been thinking for some days now, how I feel about what I experienced at QG. The facility, staff and stylist were all nice, but I am angry and embarrassed by my haircut experience here, where, without my permission, my look was changed radically. I came in with a look that works for me and asked for a trim. I am mature professional - not a young man, so a young man's haircut looks foolish on me. The haircut was fine until the sideburns. I said, sure bring them up a little, but before I could stop him, the barber completely modified how the sides and back of my head look with clippers (this started as a scissor cut at my request) and the razor (a razor finish isn't right for all looks): I have inch-wide sideburns or wider but he brought them down to slivers - under HALF an inch - they looked like little spears; and with the razor he modified my hairline at my temples without a word of consultation! Over the years I know a competent stylist will consult with the customer when the customer arrives; an inferior stylist will just go ahead and give the haircut HE or she knows how to give (and I think this stylist only knew how to give a young man's urban cut). And, considering it is summer and my skin is tan, I now have pale white skin surrounding the area of the cut - did the stylist think of this for a second?? I would have told him "Don't radically change my look" but I didn't have a guess in the world that he would do this (and too quickly for me to stop him). I'm not giving his name because I don't think he knows better, and from another review I think other stylists here are clueless in the same way: going too far with cuts and modification without obtaining the customer's consent first. As a result of my visit to the QC I've been embarrassed as a working professional for days. I'm not going back. read more

In terms of receiving a gentleman's haircut, Quinnessential Gentleman is simply a gimmick. On their old website, they had bios for the barbers, and Ken was described as an "expert" specializing in fades. I went in for a quiff, and I got a Jersey Shore. Ken immediately chopped all the length off the top of my head. The fade was abysmal and more akin to a buzz cut on the sides. The worst part, and the part that scarred me for life, was how he shaped my hairline. Ken took out a straight razor, and actually shaped my hairline in front of my ears by shaving a defined line. He went back so far, it looked like I legitimately had a developmental disorder. It looked horrid to begin with and even worse as it grew out. What Ken is actually an expert at, is making you look like a yo boy while he watches college basketball on the tv at his station. There are real barbers tucked away in tiny one or two chair shops all around Baltimore. Fed Hill has some great old guys that can cut a real fade or give you a real ivy league, with 50+ years experience under their belts. I suggest never trusting a guy that doesn't look like Clint Eastwood to do it right. read more

I wanted a completely new look so I decided to come to QG for the first time yesterday. I brought pictures in and set an appointment with Jackie after reading so many reviews on her. She did a really fantastic job and gave me advice on how to maintain my look (this is of course after a ridiculously relaxing hot towel and scalp massage). I'm going to keep coming back for sure! Ricki is also really nice and knowledgeable; she told me where to park, offered me a beer, and gave me a bunch of free samples on my way out. Maybe I should get a massage next time? There is no question that this is the best barber shop in Baltimore. You will be greeted and offered a cold beer on your arrival. You can also keep your own bottle in house, if you prefer. As you enjoy your beer you can watch television, play pool, or even play Wii. I regularly get my hair cut by Sam or Jackie, depending on who is available, both are excellent. Ricki, the masseuse is also excellent. The staff is extremely friendly and I have become friends with several. QG is a community unto itself, and you will feel very welcome. I received a gift card worth $100 for this place. Nice place, very professional team. Went there to have a "me" day. I guess that is the best I can say about this place. OK I do admit that the team who was providing the service is a part of a product, but the final product should be better and more than a chit chat. I can not recommend this place for any of the 2 services which I purchased, a pedicure and a double foam shave. My feet were in a worse shape than when I arrived and the double foam shave, wow! If you took a cotton ball across the skin it would all be hanging there after this. Well, even after contacting the company via their web site, here 2 weeks later I've not heard a word in return from them. Over all I could have spent 3 1/2 hours of my life in a better way. Actually, I chose that score because unless you know who you are getting at the store, you may be disappointed. For example, I got my hair cut my Brendan K the last time. He watched me thump off a big clump of hair off the chair from the last customer. When I was through with the haircut, he stood there and I had to remove the apron or bib, or whatever you call the fabric that keeps the hair from getting on you, and hand it to him. He said that's it, and I had to ask for him to wash my hair since it was included and a wash keeps the hair from getting all over your clothes. I had to tell him again that I wanted it cut short on the sides and so he had to do it again, but the sideburns went untouched so I didn't even notice I had hairs sticking out from the side and I didn't even notice that until I got home and had my glasses back on. His conversation was monotone and clearly uninterested. There are better people there to cut hair. It made that new $5.00 increase even more ridiculous. read more

So I never write reviews but my fiancé goes when I make appts. The first time we went it was horrible. I had a picture I literally felt like I was trying to walk her through it, cut my fiancé (he even Said his neck literally hurt) never caught her name because I was furious after she said something to the effect I was his mother. Next time I set up an appt through the app mind and body. It set me up with Bree at 12 to get his hair done. I already was skeptical but we tried her a second time. I show her a photo (a simple fade with the length kept on the top no hard part) she said ok. I went to sit and wait for my fiancé and I couldn't even breathe or look at him not is the haircut that of an 8 yr old boy but he's generally mild mannered and kept quiet not wanting to offend her. It's completely uneven on the right side and she took the length completely off the top. So we are now back to square one growing out the length that took a little less than a year and another miserable experience. Thankfully my fiancé is more polite and thanked her but once again he said my neck burns and she's always so rough. So I highly doubt we will ever go back. If I wanted this haircut for him or he wanted to look like a middle schooler we would have went to Sports Clips or had my sister just lop it off. He's upset. I'm upset. It's just two times we wasted time and money. read more

Wow, can't say enough about this place. The second ya step foot in the joint you are welcomed with a cold beer, coffee, water, etc...... you can even stock your own bottle of liquor at the front! The ladies working at the front are always pleasant and always engage in conversation. I've never had to wait to be seated, which NEVER happened at places I got my hair cut at in the past. Brendan, the dude that cuts my hair, is awesome--laid back, baltimore local who always gives me great restaurant ideas. In addition to the cut, there is a pool table upstairs where I shoot around if a friend comes with me. Plus, they have a great selection of ties. $25 for an excellent haircut, where you leave feeling like a man instead of a priss is just too good to pass up. A confusing and frustrating retail experience to say the least. Come in here asking for retail goods and they'll assumingly send you to the 5th floor. Which can be locked out if relevant sales staff isn't there. Which was the case. After this time wasting activity I asked the clerk behind the counter if they had the item category I was looking for to which the reply was "oh yes that is right over ". So it was on the first floor lobby anyway. When I asked for a more specific item the reply was something to the tune of "umm...er...don't think we have that". Looked over the area more thoroughly though and found exactly what I was looking for. However, there seems to be a price tag ambiguity strategy with this place and when the item was rung up I was surprised at how exceedingly expensive it was. The tiny pricing label on the exact spot you wouldn't even think it was on was thus pointed out to me. Other items too have sub-par price labeling. And prices aren't very competitive. So a recap: -less than knowledgeable retail staff -ambiguous pricing (obviously because items are overpriced) -crappy building layout with locked out floors I'll pass on this rather pretentious place. read more

Had some time to kill and thought I'd get a haircut. Used Yelp and found this location nearby and had not been in the area for years. The reception staff did not seem interested in helping me. I was brand new to the location/experience and had no idea about offerings and needing an appointment. There was no initiative to offer services and seem to not be interested I me being there. It went from an appt available in 30 minutes to one ready and immediately. After my haircut, they again displayed a 'false' concern for my experience. However, my experience with the stylist was fantastic. She took her time, good attention to detail, made great conversation, and flexible to my requests. She even discussed the other services offered in case I returned in the future. If I were to return I would want her again and tip her directly. I'd like to return in the future but will likely make a reservation to avoid hassles with the reception. It's a bit pricy but is worth it for an occasional pampering. read more

Finally a place for guys to get their hair cut. I've been getting my hair cut at QG for the past two years or so and love it. As others have mentioned, you get a free beer when you get there and can play pool, Wii or read a variety of magazines while you wait. All of the staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
