Confession: my first review for this place was actually for So&So next door. What a silly goose I am. Tonight, Jamie and I came here for Voodoo fries after a very mediocre supper experience at So&So. These fries were: A M A Z I N G These fries are ethereal goodness, overall on par with our other favorite loaded fries, the kimchee fries at BB Bop on Lower Greenville. This version offers up a perfect balance of hot McDonald's-diameter fries, Siracha, queso, jalapeno gravy, crispy pork belly, and scallions. H E A V E N L Y The Happy Hour beer special is just okay, encompassing only mainstream, mass market American brewed swill. Open that up to your nice local microbrew offerings, and I am a five star fan. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place... the mixed drinks are great while the beer selection didn't do it for me. I'm a full bodied thick dark 9% beer kinda gal and couldn't find anything to satisfy this request. They do make a great bloody mary for sure with those pickled beans. My first visit I had a server named Erin. She was great and I didn't appreciate watching her be demoralized by a female manager on the floor out in the open: As she walked away she quipped with "nice talk" and Erin looked like she was ready to cry. YES I SAW YOU... Ms. Manager. Rule #1 in bar and restaurant biz... never berate staff in front of customers. My second problem is that the food comes from breadwinners. I don't really like their food and after ordering 3 different items, I'm still sure I don't like their food. The kitchen couldn't even remember a key ingredient on the tacos? Hello? Lastly, on a typical weekend morning... when you are hung over, I don't want to be around big crowds of families, especially kids when I'm drinking my bloody in a dark bar. People seemed to think this was "overflow" for breadwinners or a waiting area and piled in. They didn't even order a drink while they waited... Close quarters Quarter Bar used to be the regular go to bar when ever my friends and I would go out. Great building with all kinds of cool furniture and accents, not to mention a great rooftop patio. After a while though we just stopped going. Why? Truth of the matter is that Quarter Bar maybe a victim of it's own coolness. It fills up fast and parking is always a struggle or you lose some of you bar money in valet parking. The wait at the bar to get noticed for a drink can be long too. That's probably cus at $5 a pop they are in demand. So, it's usually not a bad idea to order two drinks so that once the first is done you don't have to spend the next 10 trying to get the barkeeps attention. While the indoors can be nice, the rooftop is where we like to sip our drinks. Unless you get the coveted patio tables and chairs good luck trying to have a conversation. Most of the benches are only bumpers for all the traffic of people walking by. Hard to talk to you friend when your at butt level with the people passing by. Came to Dallas on business (I'm in the liquor industry), and ended up at this bar with a few coworkers since it was preapproved and carried our company's products. We ordered a few drinks, and ordered apps of all kinds (braised pork flatbread, spicy fries, sliders, and buffalo wings). The space was quiet, but the ambience was kitschy with "old-timey" decor. The coworkers and I dug it. Cocktails were made simply, but well. Nothing too overcomplicated, too strong or too sweet. Plus they carried my company's products. The food however, was another story. The braised pork flatbread was heavenly, even if it fell apart as you ate it, great balance of cheesy, salty, and smoky. The sliders were juicy with the bold flavor of a bigger burger. The spicy fries lived up to their name, as I felt my face heat up with just a single bite! The wings were the most forgettable aspect of the food, not because they tasted bad (in fact, the size of the wings were proof that things really ARE bigger in Texas), just that they paled in comparison behind the other three appetizers. Overall, would highly recommend this joint, even for a casual night out. read more

This is a fairly fun place on McKinney with a ton of nooks and crannies, mostly for larger groups of friends. We've come for a late, late brunch twice in nice weather to sit on the rooftop and once or twice for late night impromptu drinks inside. No issues ordering at the bar, although service can be a little surly, but still decent. I'm not necessarily offended by a surly bartender sometimes. If you wanted service outside, just don't be in a hurry. I mean, it's quite a hike to get up there as it is, and then they're just not the fastest anyway. Food was always pretty good, which I believe (mostly?) comes from Breadwinners next door. It also seems that different food is served at the bar? Again, information was pretty inconsistent. Just go for drinks and food (if you're not ravenous) and keep your expectations low. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised. And as always in this area, just remember to be on douche patrol. The Quarter Bar is probably the most chill bar in uptown. If all you want is to get a drink and actually be able to hear what the person next to you is saying, then this is your place. It's also a great place to take a group of people as it has plenty of seating. In addition to plenty of places to sit, there is a pool table upstairs (where there is another bar), and games like connect 4 to keep your group entertained. A good/bad thing about the place is that it's all by itself. With West Village to the north and all the of other bars on McKinney to the south, this place makes it hard to barhop if that is your intention. However, like I said, if all you want to do is have a quiet evening, but still have a drink, then this place can't be beat. One personal pet peeve of mine is that they serve Guinness out of a can. This is a shame. If you are going to choose to serve Guinness, then it's a must that it be on tap. This place has all of the characteristics of a good pub, with its color and decoration, but as a Guinness lover, it's very disappointing when this drink cannot be enjoyed on tap. That being said, one redeeming quality of the establishment is that it shares a kitchen with Breadwinners, so if you want some above average bar food, that is not a problem. Overall, I like The Quarter Bar every once in a while, and will continue to go if I all I want is a drink without all of the fuss associated with the rest of uptown. read more

Once upon a time we would come here for a great time, but lasting memories always deal with customer service. When staff makes eye contact with you but doesn't acknowledge you, throws your card and receipt at you, have constant eye rolls, and basically terrible attitudes, you question the caliber of the establishment. A group of friends and I got together to have fellowship and enjoy the NBA games, but it was evident we weren't well received. The Wednesday night staff (both up and downstairs) proved to me that I need to find a different alternative if this is the quality of service that we are to receive in the future. My desire to celebrate was quickly diminished and I resorted to one wine. I'm starving but I'd rather give my money to a different place that can at -least- greet its guests. This is a solid, decent, no frills bar in Uptown with a great rooftop patio. We visited early-ish on a Friday night and the place was fairly empty. When we walked in the bartender flagged us down until we came over to the bar, where he asked us what we wanted. My friend had a rum and coke and I had a margarita. The margarita was $8, which seemed a little pricy given that it was small and wasn't that strong. We took our drinks to the roof and sat up there looking down on McKinney ave. It's a pretty great view, although the music was loud which made it difficult to chat. Eventually it started raining, so we made our way down to the covered patio one floor under the rooftop patio, and sat there finishing our drinks. At one point a waitress walked by and asked if we were doing okay, which was nice. The people at the table next to ours started smoking, and that's when I realized that every table had an ashtray on it, so clearly smoking is expected. It made the atmosphere less than pleasant, so we decided to close out and leave. Inside the bar it's pretty dark, with a few comfy chairs and a few regular tables, and a really interesting digital jukebox. The rooftop patio really is the best place to sit, and I bet it's crowded on warm days. Seems like a good bar to visit if you're just looking to have a quick drink in Uptown. read more

I like the atmosphere. We popped in around 1 am on a Saturday (well, Sunday) for our last stop of the night, and it wasn't too crowded downstairs, which was nice. You didn't have to push and shove your way to the bar; we just walked right up. There was space on the balcony upstairs, too, although the balcony doesn't have much of a view, and it's cold at night...those heat lamps don't do much. Overall, seems like a fun, casual spot to hang out. The drinks were good. I'm not sure if they were overpriced or not, since I didn't buy them myself. The best hangout bar in Uptown. Hands down. Although somewhat dark inside, great vibe and cool staff. The drafts for the Tuesday special aren't just cheap, natty beers, but just about any beer that they have on tap. My friends and I frequently go on Mondays and Tuesdays for their specials. Mondays: $1 PBRs and 1/2 off pizza Tuesdays: $2 drafts and frozen drinks (jack&coke or some fruity drink). It's typically not very busy, except on weekend nights. On the busier nights, the upstairs patio/bar is open, which is nice on a fair-weathered evening. The only downside then is that there is only a one-person bathroom both downstairs and upstairs. Lines for the bathrooms can get long on a Saturday night if you break the seal too early. read more

I came here recently for a birthday party and was shocked to see how many different rooms/areas the bar has. The layout is great for hosting multiple parties within one venue; however, there's a lot to be said about the place itself. For starters, the night I visited, it was extremely cold outside and there seemed to be no warmth coming in from neither a heater or just being around so many people. It was very cold and air-ish in the bar, causing me to count the minutes down to being time to leave, which was unfortunate. The furniture in the bar is really old and the interior design in all is outdated. The bar could really use a lift! I could even hear the stairs cracking when I walked up to the top floor. The first glass of wine I tried to order, the waitress said they were out of. To keep things simple, I told her to bring me whatever dry, white wine she had. It didn't take the waitress long at all to bring out our drinks, and they were alright. The crowd was very mixed. I saw some groups that were hippy and other groups that were hip. If that makes any sense to anyone, I'd say the bar could go for anyone at any given time if wanting a super casual, ok music, ok drinks, chill kind of bar. It's not really my kind of bar, but other than it needing a bit of renovating, it was cool for one night. read more

I would have given this place four stars, but at 11 pm the bugle horns sound and all the DB's in Uptown come a running. It's pretty awesome sitting in a chair with some ditsy girl's asses 3 inches from your head though, being that there are no more places to sit. And by pretty awesome I mean uber lame. That and having your chair kicked or nudged every time some brosef walks up the stairs and around the corner. Good points are as follows, however. - Big television outside to watch the game -Great mini-cheeseburgers and fries and probably other food too (but the kitchen does shut down at 10 or 11 I think) -I ordered a dirty martini from a super cool bartender. He had a squeeze bottle of olive juice (rad!!!) and when I asked for it in a regular glass (I spill...) he was super accommodating. My martini ended up being huge! -Overall the bar is fairly big, has multiple couches everywhere and is just dark enough and cozy that I liked it. The reason I didn't like it? Let's start with the specials: Weekdays: Happy hour 4-7 - $2 wells and domestics Monday: 1/2 priced pizza, $1 PBR Tuesday: $2 drafts and frozens (coke & cherry limeade) Wednesday: 1/2 priced food til 10pm - try blue cheese siracha chips Thursday: $2 wells and domestics til 10pm Saturday: $2 wells and drafts until 6pm Sunday: Abita Haze specials during Saints Games, to support its namesake - The French Quarter I prefer being upstairs, outside on the patio if it's nice, but to be honest they could shove me in a corner and I'd still have a good time here. It gets packed, but I've never had a problem getting a drink. Cool set up, old furniture, lots of places to congregate with a larger group if you move away from the bar. Seems like a diamond in the rough for Wednesday happy hour. Not really sure why there weren't more people there, but hey more for me! I haven't been during normal bar hours so I can't speak on that, but I really like the set up - nice open floor plan, multiple types of seating/lounging and bars on multiple levels, even a patio upstairs with fun bar activities. Definitely has the makings of a place I could see myself frequenting. I had to be told it was a New Orleans themed place, either I don't pick up on stuff like that or they may want to throw a New Orleans Saint flag up somewhere or something. The only issue is parking around the area with a few spots around the place, some on-street parking in the neighborhoods around, and some parking structures around, but I know they are all hit and miss. read more

I don't always drink in Uptown, but when I do, I prefer The Quarter Bar. Maybe it's the generally nifty structure of the building and the NOLA vibe/decor. Maybe it's because I'm an old lady and I frequent the place between 5:30 and 8 pm on Tuesdays and not douchetool o'clock on weekends. Whatever the reason, I've found that The Quarter Bar is one of the better watering holes in the vortex of McKinney avenue ridiculousness. The service is so speedy, in my experience, your head will spin. I think they have some kind of sensors to notify the waiters when you're reaching the end of your beverage so you spend as little time as possible with an empty glass. Pretty fab selection of beer on tap, Magic Hat #9 and Abita galore! Half price bar food on Wednesdays and $2 drafts from 4-7 pm weekly, how can you say no to that? I guess if you don't drink, you could say no pretty easily, but the food is definitely above average for pub grub, so non-drinkers, don't write it off entirely, mmmkay? Again, here's a tip for all you legit peeps out in Yelplandia, go for happy hour on a weeknight and take advantage of the quiet hours with cheap mixed drinks, brews and food and a stellar upstairs patio. You can thank me later, that is unless you prefer the 125 decibel level crowd sloshing their beverages around and generally being obnoxious at other times of the week. It's rundown, dark, damp and full of douches, but it's still a decent place to drink. The staff couldn't be cooler and it's a bar that never wears on me. Sure, it's a place where I'm sure many college girls have had their last coherent thought before waking up naked in their dorm room the following morning -- especially on Saturday nights when an army of SMU kids in tilted caps and popped collars monopolize the spacious upstairs -- but hey, sometimes the best part about not remembering -- is NOT REMEMBERING! Watch your drinks kids! I personally like to hit it in the off hours. Weeknights around 8 or so. It thins out and you can have a normal conversation. Scratching my head, I ask "Quarter Bar - Dallas, what are you? who are you? what do you really want to be?" Being HUGE fans of your Addison location, love the service and atmosphere there, we couldn't wait to check out Dallas, having big expectations given your large roof top patio and some favorable reviews. You're dark, you're small, and unoccupied (on a Saturday?) except for two couples at the small downstairs bar and one lonely looking guy laid out on the couch in the back. We grabbed the only 2 seats left at the tiny bar and waited and waited, while your bartender continued his jovial conversation with the two couples, who were probably college age regulars. On and on and on the dialog went. Finally, BFF waved his hand (hey bartender, you were only 3 feet away, it wasn't as if you couldn't see us) for attention. Thank you kind Sir for breaking away from the social interaction to come and take our order. Okay, credit where due; bartender you do make a mighty fine Bloody Mary, pretty darn tasty, although I thought it a little small, served in a high ball glass. I like mine TALL !! But, it was quite flavorful, and with the right kick of heat and spiciness. Thank you! You kinda redeemed yourself, just a little bit. BFF had (guess what?) his usual Miller Lite. One ML is just like another ML. Enough said. We moved from the uncomfortable bar which was so high, I literally could lean straight over and put my chin on top. Awkward to have to pick up your glass and come down UNDER the bar to take a drink. Interesting design, wonder what that is about? Any secrets to share? We're sitting at our small table still trying to figure out what you are trying to be. Lots of traffic by servers running back and forth between your bar and the adjacent restaurant. Then, the light comes on. Ah ha! You are there as a waiting area and as bar service to your sister restaurant, Breadwinners, attached to your hip next door. That light was illuminated by the obnoxiously loud announcement on the loudspeaker blaring over our heads from BW calling waiting folks to their tables. What clue gave this away? The two couples at the bar left and went next door. Geniuses we are for sure! Well, I suppose this is not a bad concept, considering the always long waiting lines for brunch/lunch @ BW. Better to sit in a dark, drab, poorly lit bar, perhaps on one of the comfy couches in the back, watching the large screen TV, to wait for a table rather then standing outside in cruel Texas heat or cold windy Winters. I give you 3 stars for that clever idea. Rooftop patio looks intriguing. Maybe we'll come back on a nice Spring or Fall day and give it a chance to raise you to at least 3 stars, maybe even 4 if you serve the same tasty pizza as Addison. 2 stars for your lackluster service and overall first impression. Finishing our one drink, had to go back to the bar to get your attention to pay our tab. Shame on you for not checking in with us for another drink order. In all fairness, my high expectations probably tainted the experience. But, don't forget, we do frequent your North Dallas Sister and just adore her! You are related, aren't you? read more

The Quarter Bar is a great little gem in the uptown area. I meet some friends and co-workers here the other evening for Happy Hour. I love this style of bar, lots of little seating areas around. Great atmosphere, I reveled in the old world pub feel inside and the café seating by the street is a huge bonus to me. Then there's the upstairs and the outdoor dock seating that is overlooking the street and city. I didn't get a real chance to snack on anything, but I grabbed something as they passed by me, the samples I had tasted really good. I'm planning to revisit in the near future. Nice ratio of women to men, about 3 to 1, me being the one. Prices are what one would expect. Drinks are fairly strong. Bartenders have been friendlier, but they got the job done. I can respect the working man. Crowded enough to be on without being annoying. Take a cab and don't bother with parking. Uptown is never a good spot to find parking. If you're tired of the Dallas dive bar scene, Quarter Bar will be just what you're looking for. Not pretentious and not oozing with gold diggers. Everyone always complains about douchbags but seem to forget their ever present counter-part. This will warrant further research. read more

I really tried to like this place. My boyfriend and I wandered into Quarter Bar on a Wednesday because we heard about half-price food. The place was not crowded at all when we got there, one small group of people were there and already had drinks. We sat down at a table that had absolutely nothing on it, no menus or anything else. After watching the bartender chat with her friends for about 10 minutes, I finally went up to the bar and politely asked if we could get a couple menus at our table. A few minutes later, the bartender came and slammed a couple menus on the table and walked off without asking if we might like something to drink. That was the last straw for me and we left without ordering. I'm not going to be treated that way and patronize a place of business. BUT I contacted Quarter Bar through twitter about my bad experience and they very nicely gave me a gift card to come back. So we head back a second time because we saw via twitter they were having a special. Same problem with bad service but not as awful as the first time. We go up to the bar and ask about the special. The bartender promptly tells us the special is not happening because of the NBA (this is during All Star Week). So again, we leave. I contacted management again through Twitter and they said the bartender was supposed to honor the special if people asked for it. 2-star rating because management was so communicative and apologetic with me for the actions of their subpar bartenders. I used the gift card at Breadwinners and will not be back to Quarter Bar. read more

I didn't believe them for a second, and I'm sure the conversation was the all for the benefit for everyone around them. However, out of all the bars on McKinney, this place is my fave. read more

Let me start by saying, I usually had no issues with this establishment in previous visits, but last night... my goodness! I don't even know where to begin. I don't know if was the rude management (Bill) messing up drink orders and putting wrong orders on my tab, then getting sassy with me because he was in the wrong, (which I'm not sure why he was even behind the bar in the first place.) or the fact one of the servers kept my credit card in his pocket, charged me for drinks that I never got! Thankfully, that issue was resolved by the third bartender. We reserved the top floor, but they only designated one server to handle 50+ people. I blame management because he should've known that would be a complete disaster!!!Quarter Bar has completely changed their menu which I hope after reading this, they bring some of the bar's favorite foods back . They need to better prepare and do some customer service training because last night makes me not want to return. read more

I really like the bar itself. 2 stories, indoors & outdoors. The bar has character. The crowd is just so-so, but if you are with your own group (i.e. a bigger party), it is fun to grab a few couches/chairs upstairs & just chill. The crowd is mixed- but there were definitely some younger peeps here. Not as bad as some other places. I've been to the location in Addison many times and I must say I like this 1 better...it's more laid back and less smoky LOL Just like the Addison location...the staff was very friendly and the drinks were reasonably priced.
