I have never been to the Rail before, although I do know the area well. I often have an early Sunday dinner at a little wonderful Italian Restaurant just down Fifth Avenue called Restaurant Parma. Finding a parking space can be challenging. There are just a few blue handicapped parking spaces located nearby to the Rail. I went to the Oscar Night Party. The VIP charge was just $50.00, for which you received a full meal served by waiters with unlimited Champagne also offered. The party was hosted by the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego, and it was great fun. There were also raffles, prizes and singing by the Chorus. I even one two tickets to see MJ (Michael Jackson) the San Diego Civic Theater in May! read more

I hate giving them this low of a rating, but I'm averaging out all of my experiences. Last night we came for Puta Lucha, which was so fun! I think the event itself was organized well, but the event on the patron side was not. Everyone was just kind of shoving themselves in wherever they wanted, ticket or no. I also asked if I could use a seat for ADA, since I can't stand for longer then 10 minutes. Which they did provide, but it was at the back of the bar where everyone else was already sitting... I felt like an after thought. Which I get maybe it was chaotic, but the bar itself needs to have ADA in mind. There are some interesting people here, a really wide spread group. Some are nice, some are rude and so clueless I was stood directly in front of or hit by 3 different people while in my "ADA " seat. The floors were sticky from the moment we walked in. But at least it seemed cleaned otherwise. Staff at the bar itself were very nice!! The restrooms were ADA Accessible for sure. I have also been here for karaoke and another drag show. Karaoke is a rough one, I will never go back. Seems to cater to only a few. Drinks are good and just what I want. Overall I will have to stick with my usual haunts and start passing on this bar more often, which sucks, but it is clearly not the place for me. read more

We came in because of the deal they had advertised but I think it was misleading. They had one that said $8 for a pitcher but the pitcher is the size of a glass and they charged more anyway. That wouldnt have been too bad since its still a bit of a deal but the staff was very rude (which is something I never say). When we asked for the $8 pitcher and he asked which one, we said the one that was $8, he said he still needed to know, so we got the hazy. When he gave us a higher bill, we asked why it wasnt $8 and he said "tell me what you got" multiple times even when we asnwered to drill in that it was a hazy and not whatever the other one was even though we originally tried to order it. Overall I think we probably just had a one off bad experience but I probably wont be back. read more

ive been here twice already in which both times i go celebrating a birthday they have amazing music and a lot of friendly clientele however the bartenders will try to take advantage of people that seem drunk when it comes to their money! yesterday my friend and i were about to get our third round of drinks which were the watermelon redbull margaritas the tall black woman bartender didnt even use half of ONE redbull to make TWO drinks and when me and my friend tried to grab the rest of the redbull which we were GOING TO PAY FOR the other bartender with glasses and the pixie cut told us we had to pay $6 extra dollars for the rest of the red bull wtf!!! the two previous rounds we had already gotten we never once had to pay extra for the red bulls and they actually used two entire cans for the drinks and the second time the guy actually gave us the rest of the cans to take to our table i just think its bullshit that the bartenders try to take advantage of peoples money weirdos!! i hope this establishment gets better people as employees read more

The bartenders were quick and sociable. Wasn't really a busy night so it was not hard to get anything from bar. Watch a great show with good ppl around. The lighting in the bar was very chill and not too flashy. Didn't try any food since we ate before coming out. Definitely would come back again. read more

Friends and I came here to celebrate our friend's birthday we got bottle service and hung out in the VIP area. The VIP area is air conditioned so it feels much nicer there lol The workers were very cool! Shots and drinks were a decent price. I really don't remember all the details of this place, but I do remember having a really good time! Definitely a comfortable place to come, they have all sorts of events and different things that are inclusive and fun. Erica and Roberto behind the bar have always been so kind and welcoming which makes coming here so much better because quality service is always important. The floor was sticky and the cocktail with ranch water and Don Julio was awfully strong.. we had missed the drag show.. and there was chaffing dishes with some type of food. Judging on first impressions, I don't think I will come back unless the gogo dancers are there... I've seen quite a few shocking patron outfits that allude that anything goes like as if at Folsom street fair. Out of my chosen gay bars... #1 bar is by far my favorite along with MO's. Been here maybe 10 times. Sometimes for burlesque shows. Sometimes just passing by and hear the music. Sometimes to start my night. Had I written this review a few months ago I would have given it a 4 star. But since management changed hands it's been a pretty odd experience the few times I been in the last 3ish month. The bouncer / person checking IDs has given me the side eye with a look of disgust both times they have checked me in and the third time he said something about my ID photo which caused me to leave before even entering. There's never more than 30 people in here at any given night that I've been. The music isn't that great on the Friday and Saturday nights I been here. But at least the drinks aren't too bad. I think it's a bit expensive for the quality you're getting but it's semi strong so I guess that balances it ouI think the beers are a better deal as you're only paying 6 maybe 7 dollars for one and it last longer. I've interacted with a handful of their bartenders and really only two of them have greeted me and my friends with a smile. It's starting to feel like if you aren't queer enough in mannerisms or outfit then you're not welcome here. Haven't been here for food, not sure if they even have a kitchen but if they do, I probably wouldn't anyways. Doesn't give me a clean enough vibe to want to eat here. I'll continue to go here as long as they have burlesque shows. But other than that. I probably spend my money elsewhere. read more

I came here with some friends to watch a burlesque show on Saturday, March 8, 2025. I ordered one vodka soda and one red bull with vodka (2 drinks total) from the bar and was overcharged $29 on my credit card. I tried calling multiple times the next day to speak to a manager, but no one would answer my call. My calls would ring and then disconnect without the ability to leave a voicemail message. He walked away and I had to find someone else to help me and let me use their phone. Don't feel safe here and won't be going back. I know that perhaps 1 employee does not represent the entire business, but all I asked was for the man to make a phone call for me so at least I know someone would come for me while I waited. $25 of Lame. I feel like if a bar/club is under new ownership and making a comeback, there's some hubris in charging $25 for a NEW party, O'so Sucia. It was underattended and fairly sparse. I might suggest charing a $10 cover and building a following vs. charging more an scaring people away, shooting yourself in the foot before you can get going. This may be poor management, but I paid and I attended so the joke's on me. What isn't excusable though is the common bar problem of ordering 7-up and getting soda. I know it must be hard for a bartender to know when one clear drink has dried up and turned into another, but at $12.00 a drink, I expect that to be solved. This was a premium-priced experience, when I got an unpleasant cocktail and an empty dancefloor. Our money is worth more. read more

Some businesses are greedy, some businesses are irresponsible... As a bar, The Rail manages both at once... Charging $6 for a small bottle of water is absurd and they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to make a few extra bucks on the back of those who want to go out without getting intoxicated. I'm really bummed to write this review but I feel it necessary to share about the bizarre and downright unpleasant experience I had last night. My spouse and I attended the Sabados En Fuego event. For the sake of context and clarity, we are both members of the LGBTQ+ community, albeit straight-presenting/passing to some. We'd been walking around Hillcrest and were looking for a place to go dancing. We got to the door, had our IDs checked, I had my backpack checked, and we were both wanded prior to entry. There was no cover charge, which I thought was pretty cool too. We walked inside the club and it looked less busy than I'd have expected for anywhere in Hillcrest after 10pm on a Saturday night. Nonetheless, the music was good and I figured a smaller crowd might be easier for me to handle with my social anxiety issues, so we walked over to the dance floor and started dancing. I have bad knees and can only dance so much for so long and my spouse suggested we take a seat to catch our breath for a moment. I had put my backpack and sweater down on a booth seat while I was dancing, so we went and sat down in that area, which, for the record, was unmarked with any signage to indicate that it was a VIP/bottle service area. Additionally, we did not see anyone else sitting there with a bottle. It seemed like no sooner did we sit down than we were approached by a security guard who informed us that he "would have to ask us to leave" because we had inadvertently sat down in the VIP/bottle service area. There was no offer of having us pay for VIP/bottle service so that we could stay and I was too afraid to clarify if "leave" meant the area or the club itself. Getting up and walking to the door with the security guard closely tailing behind us, though, gave me the feeling it was likely the latter. I was honestly mortified and pretty disappointed. I'd have never sat down there if I had known it was a 'restricted' area. I just wanted to dance and, subsequently, I just wanted to rest my body momentarily. Neither my spouse nor I meant to cause any trouble and the attitude with which we were approached seemed like a disproportionate response to an innocent mistake. Between our time spent dancing and our time spent sitting, we were barely there maybe 20 minutes in total before being asked to leave by security. I still cannot understand why us sitting down in an *unmarked* booth was misinterpreted as such a grievous offense. We'd have been happy to stay and buy drinks -- we might have even considered purchasing VIP/bottle service had that option been presented to us before we were unceremoniously bounced from the club. Unfortunately, it seems our 20 minute visit to The Rail will have been our first and last one. read more

If you don't like The Rail, you don't like to party. Junior DJs every Monday, which is awesome and The Rail is always a stop on the circuit during both Pride and Cityfest. The drinks are cold, the vibe is friendly, and while not the cheapest bar you don't go broke here. Give this place some props, friends. They were on the forefront of making Hillcrest a great place to both live and play, and they're still one of the funnest bars (gay or straight) in the neighborhood! read more

First impression was that the security guard and bartender were in a bad mood what is not what to expect on a Thursday night. The night ended with a mess that was not well resolved by the manager, which means the place is poorly managed. The security, bartender and manager were treating some costumers with a lot of rudeness and disrespect. Whatever the problem was, the lack of management capacity on the part of the employees and especially on the part of the manager was visible. It was a completely unpleasant situation to behold, which could be resolved again, with deft management. Never coming back, and telling all my friends to not go there as well. read more

The 1 star is just for the dj playing good music on Saturday. The bartenders are so rude. I ordered a couple drinks and shots. I paid with my card and as usual for the tip I wrote "cash" because I was going to tip in cash but before I can get the money out of my pocket the bartender yells at me "WHERE IS THE CASH??!!" I was a bit thrown off and he starts pointing at the receipt and once again yells at me for the cash. At that moment I decided not to leave a tip. How are you demanding for a tip. My review is for 09/17!! We loved it here. We came for their latin night. The club was great!!! Dj was cool and took and honored song requests! And bartenders were great! The cutie with the jello shots was SO NICE and welcoming. And also the front door bouncer was nice and warm and welcoming! From the door up until closing we felt welcomed. It wasn't packed (which we enjoyed) and the environment was clean. The cover fee was affordable. Bathrooms were also clean! We would recommend and come here again. read more

I am very disappointed that on pride weekend I had my friends waiting in line and brass Personel asking if we had tix, and it turned out that it was inclusive and females where not permitted to enter. They ask aid to leave if you had a female in our group. After waiting 30 min. in line they told us that females are no welcomed. I was disappointed do to equality and diversity and the people that spoke out where not let in. This was very sad and very surprised that the owner will let this happen! I'd been to this place a few years ago for dancing, and came back recently for happy hour. They have undergone an awesome remodel and the new setup is great! They had a great selection of drinks, including cider and good IPAs. We enjoyed their happy hour snackies and the staff was really nice. Dustin in particular took excellent care of us. read more

Walked in on a beautiful Sunday afternoon after 330. Only two customers were seated inside. The bar had a table tent indicating happy hour everyday and with $8 premium well drinks. I ordered a kettle one with soda and was charged $10. When I asked the bartender, she said "oh the computer puts it in that way. Besides I think that's an old table tent." Huh?? The bartender made no effort to correct the price. Moreover, if it were an old ad why still have them placed? This place truly needs new management or a new owner or both. I cannot recommend it. Every time I go to the Rail I am constantly reminded why I dislike this establishment. for the smallest dance floor, and the shittiest of drinks they have the audacity to charge a cover that is equal to or higher than Richs'! The bar staff ALWAYS has an attitude. Music is terrible. The crowd is a young 21-25 year demographic. I believe these kids only stay at this bar because they don't really understand how terrible it is. If they were to spend some time at First on Fifth or Urban Mos' they would realize the Rail is simply a money hungry establishment. I dislike this bar soooo much. Sunday Brunch here is AMAZING. I'm a sucker for Drag Brunch, and these girls know how to bring it! The food is also so very tasty, and you never see the bottom of your cup because the mimosa servers ALWAYS fill you up before you can finish! (Joe is my favorite mimosa boy. Your jaw will drop when you see him serve you in undies.). Altogether, the staff is so friendly and fun, the food is great, and you're sure to be entertained! Sunday Brunch here is a must! read more

It's just another Manic Monday... Monday is the happening night here with its 80's music pumping all night long. 3 dollar cover before 11pm and 5 dollars after. $1 wells too, double fistin ya'll! HOWEVER, keep in mind there is a 20 dollar minimum for plastic. Booo since I never carry cash, but lesson learned the first time. Not sure about other nights, but if you plan on checking out the Rail, I'd say come on a monday. Doesn't matter if you are gay, straight, purple or like monkeys. Whenever my boy comes to town for a visit, we always seem to stop here. He's gay and doesn't like the bears, which apparently the Rail has less of...so he says. I remember back in the day when his place was a dump and I wouldn't touch anything fearing I would catch a STD. I preferred chilling outside on the patio with people and their cancer sticks than being smothered inside. But now it's a lot better and I'm not scurred to say have my back touching the wall...I think. Anyways, the bartenders are nice and some are even great eye candy. The dance floor is fun and always entertaining. The times I've gone, it's been a good vibe of people and I always manage to have my ego stroked by some cute boy, even though we all know he's into my friend or the guy next to me. My visit to Brass Rail was way back in the beginning of May, but thinking back on the experience still makes the blood boil under my skin, so I figured it was time I came on here and reviewed the place. Note: this review is not on the drinks or the atmosphere, as I had the opportunity to experience neither. It is only on the staff and management. After dinner at The Tractor Room and drinks at The Loft, my sister's bachelorette party made its way down to the Brass Rail, which from the street appeared to be "the place to be." Each of us paid our $7 (or was it $10?) cover charge and walk in, until the last girl in our party of 10 comes up to the pay window and is told she is too drunk to enter. Now, she really didn't seem that drunk to me, but I recognize that it's really not my call, and I have no problem with an establishment that tries to protect itself by not admitting inebriated guests. Completely understandable. What is NOT understandable is their refusal to refund the $63 (or was it $90) in cover charges that the remaining 9 of us had paid less than 3 minutes prior. Obviously, as Drunky McDrunk was part of our party, we weren't going to leave her all by herself outside the bar. At first, when I was denied a refund by the guy at the front, I thought he was just a dimwitted employee with no common sense, and I calmly asked to speak with the manager. Turns out the manager was not only dimwitted himself, but also a total d-bag. With the utmost arrogance, he told me that they "don't do refunds" and there was nothing he could do for me (translation: there was nothing he WANTED to do for me). So we spent 65+ dollars to spend less than 3 minutes in a bar. Awesome. On the upside, after being screwed over by Brass Rail, we made our way back to The Loft, where we had a fabulously good time. Great people, great bar, and the cheapest drinks I've ever had in my life. My advice: don't even bother with Brass Rail; stick with The Loft. read more
