I have lived in or near this store for many years, and the business has slowly gone downhill until Sam bought it. Both he and his wife Mona are friendly and it is always a pleasure going in. The made-to-order sandwiches are excellent (only made at lunchtime), as are the other fresh offerings (cheesecake, chocolate cake, macaroni salad, fresh hummus, dolmas...). For a little store he has a very well curated selection of beer, wine, and distilled products, and I would not hesitate to take his recommendations. I love shopping at Rainbow Market, they always have everything I need. I buy my organic fruits, veggies, teas, coffees, creamers, body soap, fluoride free toothpaste and they carry every organic vitamin and supplements. They also have organic nuts and spices. I can go on forever about all thst they have. And they have people in every department to help you with any and all questions. Tgey are all so sweet and nice there. The store is always stocked, i never see empty shelves there. They are also very clean there. I don't shop any where else but here. Rainbow Market has it all. I've been coming here for five years. 6 stars if it were allowed. Sandwiches are quality, convenience unparalleled. A wonderful couple run it. Their pricing there is commiserated with what has been going on in the cood markets for a while. Pun intended. This is about supporting local shops or losing them due to apps and larger Molly Stones/Safeway economic model. It's ultimately our choice. These folks aren't getting rich, they are surviving in a wild economy that favors dynamic pricing with outside capital meant to squeeze local competitors out and then raise prices above what they were before. read more

I am sitting here devouring a delicious BLT on a sourdough roll, and it occurred to me that I had not yet written a review of the new (under new management) Rainbow Market. I cannot comment on their very impressive selection of wine, beer, and hard liquor, sadly, because a bum liver made me climb on the wagon a few years ago. If you're on your way to a dinner party or a date in the 'hood, this is the perfect place to pick up a nice bottle of wine, though. Their sandwiches are worth a five-star rating, and when you add a lovely woman behind the counter who is as caring and pleasant as she can be, you score a winning combination. By far my favorite grocery store in San Francisco, even though I am a total carnivore and have to go elsewhere for meat and seafood. Rainbow is an institution and any true native/local shops here. It is as good as it gets. Because it is owned by its employees, it has a completely different feel to it. I could happily spend a half day just soaking it all in. Great new store in the upper Castro! Adorabell's is gone and I loved them but the new owners changed eveything around and it is much better now! They have a huge selection of wine, spirits, soda and liquor! For now they have some snacks and a few basics like milk, they need to cary sliced bread and some deli meats but I hear they will be putting in a Deli for sandwiches, then the store will be perfect! It's brand new inside and I can't wait for them to fill the store with all the little things we need every day! The best part is they are open untill midnight on weekdays and 2am on the weekends! One of the things I miss most about New York City are the small delis on every corner. Rainbow is one of those perfect all-too-few corner stores in San Francisco. Horrible experience at this local corner store last week!! I couldn't help but find time to write this review. One, I wasnt greeted at all. I was looking around the store since it was my first time inside. After about 15 minutes someone rudely asked if they can help me. It was an elderly man who was smoking a cigarette. I then saw that they make deli sandwiches and wanted to order one of the special sandwiches on the menu but the woman that was behind the counter didnt even wash her hands before making my order. She continued to make my sandwich and didnt wash before or after. I was completely disgusted and DO NOT recommend coming here. I didnt mention anything about the unsanitary issue but i definitely threw the sandwich away! What a waste of money!
