I asked for different things that never came and my husband got up twice to look for assistance. They also charge a 20% gratuity which was not deserved. We came here for a small gathering. It was our first time here. This place is tucked in a little next to a busy street and residential area. This restaurant only has valet parking, but there is three hour parking nearby. To start I got the Cosmo and my husband got an old fashion. For food, we got the Spaghetti Pomodoro plate, which can be made vegan, as it is stated on the menu. My husband enjoyed his plate as is, but he added the seasonal veggies. I modified my Spaghetti Pomodoro plate to be tossed with olive oil and garlic instead of the tomato sauce, and added the seasonal veggies as well, which included carrots, snap peas, and Brussel sprouts (minus onions and bell peppers) ; I also enjoyed it. I ordered a side of broccolini as well. For dessert, we got the gelato (also vegan). This restaurant is on the fancier side, price-wise, but it's great for a special occasion. Overall, all of the food and drinks tasted great and came out pretty quickly. Carlos, our waiter, was super friendly, understanding of the food modifications, and had a great vibe! Everyone in general who helped us and our party was nothing but great. We also enjoyed the cozy and homey atmosphere of this place. We came to The Raymond for dinner and everything was absolutely beautiful, from the food to the ambiance. We sat outside by the fireplace which made the evening feel extra cozy and special. We started with the house-baked bread served with two types of whipped butter - OMG the butter! INCREDIBLE! That was followed by the crispy calamari with grilled lemon and a creamy dipping sauce. The little gem salad was light and fresh with peas, greens, and a creamy dressing. For mains, we had the filet mignon with seasonal veggies, a green puree, and a layered potato side. We also had the braised short rib with mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans, mushrooms, and crispy root vegetables on top. Both entrées were rich, flavorful, and beautifully plated. We ended the night with a dessert that I can't remember the name of, but it was warm, buttery, and came with ice cream and some kind of fruit. Sooo good. We also had a cappuccino to go with it. I love this place. The atmosphere feels tucked away and intimate. Perfect for a special night out, date night, or just treating yourself to great food in Pasadena. Parking can be tricky. You might find spots down the street or in the nearby neighborhood, but just a heads-up, it's a steep hill. Not ideal if you're wearing heels. read more

We have gone to The Raymond over the last 30 years and it's slowly gone from high end dining to mediocre dining experience. Gone are the days of attention to detail with delicious comfort food to joining 2 bistro tables together to make into "one" for 4 people in the back patio! We spent $550 on under seasoned average food with subpar service where the waiter didn't even take our order . At the end we had to give tip for service that didn't even include a bag for leftover food that we had to box ourself. I highly recommend skipping this place and going to the Parkway Grill or the Chop house 5 minutes away for significantly better food and service for the same price. read more

In March, I was able to secure a reservation for brunch to ring in my best friends birthday with a small group of our friends where we were able to have some of the best cocktails and savory breakfast items. With such a great first experience, I absolutely had to celebrate another friend's belated birthday last night. From the amazing atmosphere and decor to the beautiful cocktails and delicious appetizers and main dishes, everyone in our party had a great time. The good was my company. the service was ok. The need for improvement is that one person's order in our party was not submitted and they had to wait quite a while to get their order. We were told it was coming but it didn't and we had to ask the waiter . The bad is that if you sit in the back court yard outside . The exhaust from the parked cars can be smelled . NOT Good for customers health and food experience. One last thing this restaurant has been around for many years. Management completely oversold the valentines dinner. People were waiting hours to even be seated for a RESERVATION! We were luckily seated 30min after our reservation time but the full Meal took 3 hours to be served. Staff was amazing and accommodating but the obvious problem lies with overselling an event by such margins. Every table around us was visibly upset. Food naturally came out luke warm with such wait times and we missed the other events we had planned for the night. A normal dinner like this may take about 1 - 1.5 hours at the most for 2 People. We waited 3 goddamn hours from seating to check. Ambience seemed great until other patrons started complaining and the music stopped 2 hours early. Awwww I am so disappointed at my last visit here. I have come here twice before and have had AMAZING experiences, but this last one was quite a bummer. I came in to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted by a nice host, but the server was just totally not present. We waited 30 mins to give our order (which we had to ask a runner to get our server), he did maybe 2 or 3 check backs, but again we had to get a runner to get our server to have him take our secondary drink orders and then lady the check. We had a great experience at The Raymond. The waiter was very friendly and accommodating. We had 2 kids in our party, and while they don't have a kids menu, he was able to check with the chef and offer burger with fries, pasta with red sauce, or pasta with butter. Generally I would say it's better to leave the kids at home since entrees are in the $40+ range and this is a nicer restaurant on the romantic end. They had a wood burning fireplace going on the outside patio. I've been to the Raymond quite a few times. A great place that has good vibes and even better drinks. But tonight was more about the quality of the dinner, which was lacking. Started with a Charcuterie Plate. Which I had a few times before. Yet tonight, it came without the fig jam and the cornichons. The bread was dry and hard. But I've been here often enough that I let this one slide. But for main I ordered a Steak frites. Medium rare. What I got was medium. Chewy and lacking of a $49 price tag of a decent steak. We had a really wonderful night here. Our reservation was for 10 PM, but we showed up a bit early--around 9:15--without realizing the kitchen had already closed. Still, the staff was incredibly kind and went out of their way to seat and serve us anyway, which honestly made our night. The food was amazing. We had the crudo, salmon, tagliatelle, and semifreddo for dessert--every dish was delicious and clearly made with care. The flavors were spot on and everything was beautifully presented. On top of that, the service was just exceptional. Friendly, attentive, and never rushed, even though we were there so late. My sister and I hosted a baby shower for our niece in the cactus garden. It was a warm day (July 12) and with the shade and ceilings fans it was very pleasant. The special events manager Kevin Rockway was fabulous from beginning to end. Was quick to respond to our phone calls and emails and last minute changes with encouragement and positivity. Leo the server handled all 15 of us ladies and five little girls like a champ, with a smile and immediate attention for a full 3 hours. The patio and entrance was charming and very old Pasadena. It couldn't have been more perfect. The food was fabulous. I was torn by what to order, (we had three options) I went with the burger which was fabulous, but also heard the shrimp salad and the kid's meals were top notch as well. What a special night for my best friend's birthday here! We had a private area in the back, but it still had the homey feel to it. I loved the ambiance here! I got the Pasta Bolognese, Bread & Butter, and the Taco Party drink. This combination was incredibly filling and full of flavor! I usually don't like tomato flavored things but the pasta was made so well that I didn't even mind at all. The bread was worth the order so don't hesitate to get it. I was hesitant on ordering the drink based off the name, but it tasted like a taco in a drink exactly like their description! Delicious! We've heard so many good things about The Raymond and was able to get a reservation for their brunch time. Parking can be a doozy given the restaurant is located on a busy street (Fair Oaks), so it's mainly street parking. They do also have valet parking for $8. Once inside, the restaurant is laid out like a old house with a old timey feel. We made the mistake and made the reservation for indoor, but if you get a chance check out their back patio! Definitely a gorgeous site on a nice sunny day. As for their menu, it's a pretty typical brunch menu with omelettes, pancakes, breakfast burritos and such. We were feeling hungry so we ordered three dishes: 1. Crab cake Benedict's - we've had crab cake Benedict's at other locations and we felt the ones at the Raymon fell a bit short. The chipotle hollandaise was a bit thicker than it should have been and there was a bit of a scent to the crab. It wasn't bad, but wasn't our favorite dish. 2. Smoked Salmon Toast - Definitely the best dish we had! The addition of the pickled onions and radish paired really well with the smoked salmon. The cut of bread was thick and toasted to perfection with butter. If there is one item to try on their brunch menu, this is it. 3. Short Rib tacos - This dish came highly recommended by our waitress. Flavor wise it was good but the only thing we'd do differently is ask for them to put the pico de gallo on the side since it made the tacos soggy. Built in 1886, The Raymond once was the caretaker's cottage for the Raymond Hotel, which is no longer in existence. In 1977 this charming craftsman was converted into a restaurant. I dined here many years ago and had drinks here a few weeks ago and heard it was under new ownership, so I wanted to check out the new menu. I met my darling gals here for brunch. We sat in the patio, which is lovely and relaxing. Our server was Kelly, and she was an absolute doll - friendly, helpful, & attentive. Our order consisted of: Avocado Toast, Caesar Salad, & a Blueberry Muffin. The Avocado Toast was impressive. It was a large, thick slice of country white bread topped with mashed avocado, pickled shallots, watermelon radish, chives, & Espelette spice served with country potatoes. My Caesar Salad was excellent. The little gem lettuce was tender and buttery soft. The garlic croutons were delicious, the creamy Caesar dressing was exceptionally good, and the artichoke hearts were a nice addition. The Blueberry Muffin was made in house and was served warm with melted butter. My friend really enjoyed it. If you are a cocktail aficionado, I recommend checking out their creative signature libations. (Mocktails are available too.) The mixologist are experts in their field. Shaking up creative craft cocktails that incorporate fresh squeezed juices, house made syrups, and hand cut ice. Since it was brunch, I had a glass of sparkling rosé (Victorine de Chastenay), my friend had the Moscow Mule. On my previous visit I had the Stomazzi and was impressed by how well balanced it was. If you prefer an Old Fashioned then I suggest Drama Club, which is a unique riff on this classic that won't disappoint. Brunch at the Raymond 1886! My wonderful Yelp CM TD introduced me to this famous cottage on the side of Fair Oaks. It is located at the base of Raymond Hill. It was such a treat to re-visit again for a Birthday Brunch. I highly, highly recommend the Caesar Salad, not because it has my name but because it is darn delicious. The plates were family style. The potatoes were crispy. Ordered the following: 1. Short Rib Tacos braised short ribs, flour tortillas, avocado, pico de gallo, pickled onions, salsa verde, sunny side up eggs, served with crispy potatoes 2. This was my first time here, so I didn't know what to expect. It's right off the 110N, but if you blink, you'll miss it. It's tucked away and looks like a house. There's street parking, but why hassle when valet parking is only $8? Inside is really dark. Almost clandestine with low ceilings and oversized booths and tables. As I waited for the rest of my party, I was checked on by no less than three people: "Would you like some water? Would you like to go ahead and check your party in, would you like to look at a menu until they arrive? Would you like some water?" I felt so seen and cared for and I hadn't even been seated yet! The 5 of us were finally seated outside on the covered patio. Our server Jeannette (?, she's from Ventura and has a sentence tattoo), was top tier! I had the spiciest most flavorful Bloody Mary ever! I ordered the blueberry pistachio waffles and crispy bacon. We had cocktails, mocktails and some lemony dessert. We also had the bread plate. The apple turnover was to die for. Everything was magnificent and I highly recommend. I don't know how much our bill was, but including a generous tip, we each paid $68, which I thought was absolutely on par for the lovely service (dare I say, a bargain?). 10/10 read more

ABYSMAL THANKSGIVING DINNER!! Avoid at all cost!! FIRST, We went here as a party of 8 for dinner. The reservation was at 6:15pm but we had to wait at least 30 minutes to get seated. There was ZERO apology from the staff for making us wait in the cold. That was the first red flag in many more to come. SECOND, We were asked to pick our dinner option WEEKS in advance, so we made sure to note our preferences a week before to be mindful of the Thanksgiving rush. Unfortunately, our mindfulness was not reciprocated as the waitress just casually informed us upon getting seated that our preferences were purely references for the Chef to prepare. Mind you - this was not communicated in ANY WAY prior to our dinner. Not only did she NOT apologize for the miscommunication, the waitress had a most annoyed and checked out look on her face as we scrambled to get the orders together because of THEIR incompetence. FINALLY, the food was bland and frankly inferior to store-bought meals. We ordered two cheesecakes for the table and one came out rock solid while the other one was soft. We were completely flabbergasted at the inconsistency. The waitress also failed to bring out several dishes as requested and asked us to repeat our orders when it should be her job to keep track of them. Needless to say, their sheer incompetence ruined our Thanksgiving dinner which several members of our family traveled an hour to. If you ever consider going here for Thanksgiving (or anytime really), just do yourself a favor and get a nice hot meal at Whole Foods or even Costco. This was our first visit to The Raymond 1886. We have seen the place many times but never had an opportunity to visit until this week during DineLA. The place is beautiful and has great ambiance. The building used to be the caretaker's house for the now gone Raymond Hotel. Besides the house, there is a very nice covered terrace and side patio as well. We came with a group of six and were seated inside. We all ordered the DineLA menu and four of us added the wine pairing. Although food was good, service could be significantly improved. We started with cocktails while waiting for the first course, which is one of the main reason The Raymond 1886 is famous for. When they came in the cocktails were delicious. Probably the best Old Fashioned I have ever had! Unfortunately the cocktails were served with the appetizer, not before it, as requested; and the wine that was supposed to be paired with the course was not brought in. Almost everyone in our group finished their appetizer without the wine, except for my husband me. I kept waiting for the waiter to come back, but he never did so I got up to search for him and the manager and asked about the wine. The server's response to this was that they had not brought the wine because they were out of wine glasses. To me it would have made perfect sense to let us finish our cocktails (as we were supposed to do), and hold the appetizers until the restaurant was ready to serve it with its pairing. The manager came to pour the paired wine and apologized. He also shared additional wines with us which was nice. By this time, the two members of our group who did not order the wine pairing request a wine glass and an iced tea that were delivered. For the second course, the wine was poured at the same time as the food was delivered, but the salmon was supposed to be paired with a Pinot Noir and instead it was served with a white wine. Again, we mentioned it to the manager and it the issue was corrected. My steak was requested to be cooked medium rare, and it came well done. I immediately asked the person who served the plate, is this medium rare? and he admitted it look very cooked and took it back to the kitchen to be replaced. Finally, at the end of the meal, I noticed that my friend who ordered the iced tea did not drink it at all. I asked if he didn't like it and he said that they brought him iced coffee instead of iced tea. In summary, it was issue after the other. Alessandro, the manager did the best he could to correct the situation, and I understand that many restaurants get overwhelmed during DineLA, so I plan on giving them another chance. I must say that the food and drinks were very good. Hopefully service will be better next time. read more

Disappointing first and last visit! I had a 5:00pm reservation for two at The Raymond and arrived a little early around 4:45pm. The valet was nowhere to be found for several minutes, which was already a bit frustrating, but I figured it would get better once we were seated. Unfortunately, it didn't. We checked in around 4:50pm and were seated quickly, given menus, and served water -- and then completely ignored for over 30 minutes. Servers walked past our table multiple times, but not one person stopped to greet us, take a drink order, or even acknowledge we were there. It's really disappointing, especially since I grew up in Pasadena and had always wanted to try The Raymond. I thought it would be a nice dinner with my son, but instead we ended up leaving. I let the hostess know why we were leaving, and all she said was "sorry" -- no effort to make it right. We went to Ruth's Chris afterward, where we were seated immediately in a lovely booth without a reservation. That's what real hospitality looks like. The old fashion was the highlight for me. The ribeye filet was mid, I subbed their potatoes for fries and and bummed out as they also withheld the delicious charred broccolini, so don't be like me. Steak skirt had more flavor, IMO. One of my guests ordered their special snapper, and was told as the other dishes were coming out, that they had ran out. Luckily they're prepared another fish plate in lieu so there wasn't a wait for her dinner. Manager took care of it, but strange how they took so long to realize they were out. First things first, **warning you can totally miss the entrance to this spot bcs it's a driveway to more than one property (homes/apts), valet was offered @$8 on a Sunday, not sure if it changes on other days. Valet was taking alil long so I looked up and saw a car leaving on the street, backed up (lucky no one was behind) and got a street parking spot. People were very friendly and kind. We started on patio but then moved into the house cause it was warming up by the second + the sun was hitting 2 of us. They sat our group of 5 right as you walk in from the patio and although we felt secluded, they sat us in a perfect spot. We had a great time, good food, drinks and laughs and our server Leo, understood our needs. 2 got the panini, they said it was very tasty, it definitely looked good. I'm trying that next time. Another got short rib tacos, she said they were ok. I got crab cake Benedict with regular hollandaise sauce, should have ordered eggs not to be so well cooked, would have enjoyed my dish abit more. The crispy potatoes on the side were good too. As for drinks, I'm not a day drinker but the drinks looked so good that I went for it! I really wanted that fresh orange juice so I compromised and got a screw driver ... Come to realize they used a different juice lol so I had to get a glass of their fresh OJ, delish! My boyfriend planned a birthday dinner for me at the end of August. We had made a previous reservation, and we were greeted and seated fairly quickly. We were seating outdoors, which was nice because the weather wasn't too hot or cold, and the ambiance was romantic, dark, and very calm. As for parking, there's only valet parking available, so be prepared for that when you arrive. We right away ordered some appetizers and drinks, which were all delicious. We ordered the meatballs and calamari. As for our entrees, I ordered the steak & my boyfriend order a burger which were both well portioned and very yummy! The steak was nice and tender and made to perfection. I also decided to order dessert and it was fabulous! I couldn't get enough of it. It definitely settled my sweet tooth. Lovely brunch spot! I brought my mother-in-law here for her birthday brunch with my small daughter. I did make a reservation in advance which I would recommend doing as it does look like it gets busy for brunch. I, specifically, asked to be sat outside which they were able to accommodate, and we got a nice shady area. Our server was wonderful! I am kicking myself because I cannot remember his name, but he was very nice and attentive. We started off with the apple turnover which was soooo yummy! It came warm with a little cream on the side to top it off. We both ordered avocado toast. I did the Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast with potatoes, and I added an egg. It was a good portion size to share with my toddler. The food was delicious, and we were both very satisfied with our meals. They only have valet parking. HUGE SHOUTOUT to their valet guys. I came in on Friday and brought my parents from out of town and we ended up at the bar. Met a super nice bartender named Brett and he made my mom the best drink she ever had, the perfect drink she called it. And on top of great service overall the vibe was great, food was so yummy and I must say Brett made our evening! I know we'll be back soon! read more

Food: The calamari was good, it was little bit too spicy for me, and the rice paper was a little oily but still yummy. The bread and butters were great, they swap out the flavors every day, and we had smoked cheddar and cranberry orange, I really enjoyed the cranberry orange one, it was bright and sweet and buttery. The kale salad was also good , the perfect dressing and the perfect toppings. The ribeye was cooked to perfection and it was very flavorful. The chimichurri was delicious and very fresh tasting. The Mac n cheese was good, but needed a better cheesy flavor, it was a little creamy and not cheesy. We had three desserts, the lemon dessert, the chocolate pot de crème, and the chocolate bread pudding. The pot de crème base was great, rich and creamy, but the olive oil sea salt in the whipped cream didn't hit the mark. It threw off the flavor for me. The bread pudding was great, I think that because the chef used fresh bread not stale bread it elevated it to a new level. I'm not a big bread pudding fan but this was good. The lemon dessert was the best of them all, the perfect tartness, and it was silky smooth and just melted away in your mouth. The blueberry sauce was just divine and a beautiful color. Service: Our server, Ginger, was great, she was kind and helped us with some items on the menu. The food came out so fast, she hadn't even left our table yet and the salad was at our table. Atmosphere: I thought it was cute and cozy. We sat outside and the light that came in was beautiful. It was perfect for when the sun was setting because it wasn't too warm, and if it got cold they had heaters. Overall: Great food, great atmosphere! I recommend! read more
