Everything was great... except the food :/ Got the mixed basket so tried everything except the chicken (I did notice a lot of locals getting chicken so maybe that's good?). There was nothing particularly "bad" but it was just ok. The breading was thick and very bland. No seasoning and not the best. Shrimp is tiny under all that breading. Decent portions. The large baskets are fine for two. Milkshakes are a hard pass. I believe it's just a McDonald's type premade machine then they add flavors (she did confirm the flavoring were flavor add ins) Mocca- just Herseys syrup Coffee - not the worst of the lot Black Ras - decent syrupie flavor All three overly sweet. What a terrific place and the food is fantastic! The Red Barn clearly thrives on guests being able to enjoy the food while seated at the numerous picnic tables set all around the property, yet I was thrilled with my first experience here despite the pouring rain. The long lines are efficiently handled whilst giving guests a view of the very busy and very tidy kitchen. While waiting for my order, I was impressed by the employees clearing tables and guiding diners to the newly opened booths. Every one of them were cheerful, efficient and especially solicitous of older guests needing just a little extra assistance. My clear meat lobster roll was jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The 1/4 lb of meat consisted of large whole claw meat, unlike so many lobster rolls filled with tiny pieces of shredded meat. Today the lobster roll was on a special including their hand-cut onion rings which were hot and crispy! My sister ordered the "snack" size fried shrimp basket and the shrimp were cooked perfectly with a light and crisp breading. The size was very generous. In fact, watching diners leaving, today, most were carrying take-home boxes. Prices are very reasonable. Food arrives quickly. Walk to a window and they will have your food all ready, well packaged, and still warm. The staff were all masked. The fried chicken was among the most tender and well cooked I have had. The food is awesome. My wife had a lobster roll and I had the seafood basket. We were stuffed but wanted to try the seafood soup so we shared a bowl of that. The seafood soup is one of the best foods I have ever tasted. The people who work here are so friendly and helpful. I wish we could move this business back to Texas. The lobster roll was huge, although a bit pricey. Huge pieces of lobster in a nice toasted roll. But the star of this place has to be the fish chowder. You can order outside or call it in and they have outdoor seating that's covered. Had to wait in the rain for our takeout, but grateful they had umbrellas out for folks to use. Mainers love it and can be found chatting it up about truck mufflers and other hoopla in line. Out of place, us New Yorkahs ordered some grub and popped a squat just in time for the Elvis impersonator to emerge on stage. At the red table we shared and split and spit on a lobstah roll, fried clam strips (dinner portion), fries and a side of cole slaw. Lobstah roll was good. A very solid lobstah roll. Meat was succulent and distinctly fresh. Roll was toasted and Mayo was mayoeyyyyy but not to the point where tongues were drowning in a sea of mayo. The fried clams are crispy and sultry. The clams pair nicely with a rendition of Elvis's Jailhouse Rock by a women in a hand sown gold jump suit. Cole slaw was meh. French fries were decent. A little too thick and not quite crispy enough. Well the food at red barn is quite good, it's not great. The vibes however are stellar. Surrounded by Mainers, listening to Elvis, and seated at a red picnic table one truly can feel like they're fresh off the fishing boat. Laura, the owner of the establishment, must also be mentioned. Laura scurries about giggling while talking up first time customers and inquiring about the families of frequent fliers. I've never seen a women look so happy just wiping sticky soda of off a garbage can. Love just emits from lovely Laura's heart. I recently stopped by the Red Barn for an early dinner after a round of golf. The menu featured a wide spectrum of delicious fried seafood options. Unfortunately there were limited non-fried options. My order was taken by a very pleasant person behind the counter. The food arrived quickly. I got the mixed seafood platter and my wife got the seafood stew. My food was lightly battered and perfectly cooked. It was a bit heavy on the fries vs fish, but everything was delicious. My wife's stew was loaded with fish, scallops, and lobster. Good place to stop for some quick fried food. They claim to be a great place for seafood, but I didn't get any. I had chicken nuggets tossed in hot sauce with fries. Staff was friendly and welcoming, accommodating to my request of being tossed in buffalo sauce. I'd go back. We are actually staying up in the Belgrade Lakes area, but a local told us to go check this place out. And if a local recommends it, you have to go! It did not disappoint!! It has so much charm and character, the staff is super friendly and nice, and the food was very good, and definitely in abundance!! Probably the best thing on their menu is the stew (seafood chowder), but those homemade whoopie pies are a must, especially the peanut butter ones!! The Red Barn "family" treats you like a family member when you walk in, like you are walking into their house. We have always been welcomed immediately upon walking. They check in with all guests to see if it's their first time to help navigate through the process quickly. No time to waste, because the crowds will pack in quickly! They hand you menus and sometimes take your order while standing in line and will bring it to the register. There is always a thank you when you order and a "your welcome" when you say thank you for your food. = POLITE! :) The menu is simple and easy to navigate, so many delicious options - fish, chicken, lobster rolls....don't be fooled by the simplicity, the food is fresh and top quality. Nothing is too greasy and they make a perfect crinkle cut fry - Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. America's Test Kitchen would most likely approve :) The dining room is intimate and split into two dining areas, on is to the right as you walk in the the other is straight ahead and then to the right as you walk in. It is always crowded, but the people tend to come and go pretty fast, usually a spot to sit in. In the summer, the outside seating area is fantastic - plentiful and there is plenty of staff to greet you and keep the outside area neat and tidy. This place has my heart. We visit it after visiting friends and family at the cemetery and enjoy a nice meal in their honor. My mom loved seafood. I highly recommend this local place. All of the staff members are super friendly, and are always happy to hear people are visiting from out of town. Besides clam chowder, I rarely eat any type of seafood chowder/stew. Glad I made an exception, this stew was sooo delicious! Late review, stopped here w/ my Father-In-Law on Saturday June 18th. We arrived around 5pm, place was fairly busy but we able to find a table inside. You order at the counter and they call you to come back to pick up your food. Unfortunately, we picked a table right under the intercom, it was a bit annoying to have the orders being called out every 30 seconds. But other than that, the food was decent. I had the Seafood Stew, it was good. The lobster claw placed on top was the only large piece of lobster in the stew (just so everyone knows after looking at all the pics of the Seafood Stew). I also had a Scallop roll -- pretty standard, like other scallop rolls I've had at other establishments. My Father-In-Law was very happy with his order of Whole Belly Clams, they were excellent. When I arrived I was told, without any apology, that "online orders go to the bottom of the pile." What was most concerning is they "appear" to be big military and veteran supporters. As Florida residents who spend every summer in Maine we can't wait each year to get back to be able to eat at The Red Barn. We ate there last evening.
