This is a blink and you might miss it diner not to be missed! After an appointment this morning my dad and I were looking for a nice lunch. In Manchester this should not be a problem but not knowing the area very well and looking only for American fare this can be difficult. Thankfully, Yelp came to the rescue once again. Seeing the reviews and that they served breakfast all day brought us in. I hadn't eaten anything yet so I was really quite hungry. Walking in this little place felt very casual and homey. We were greeted warmly and directed to sit wherever we wanted. We chose a seat across from the bar and sat down. The menus are on the tables and someone came over quickly to take our drink orders. We both decided on coffee and also on the Yankee breakfast. Not 100 percent sure on the name, but it was two eggs, home fries or beans, toast, and a slice of pie!! I was super hungry so I ordered a side of bacon and one blueberry pancake. Coffee comes with every meal at no extra cost! When the food came everything was cooked perfectly. The toast had a little much butter but I hadn't asked for it to be light. I was happy the pancake came with the butter on the side. I shared the cake with dad as well as the bacon. That pancake was huge! I meant to get a picture of it but by the time I thought to it was somewhat massacred. After we finished all that we dared they brought out the pie. I decided on cherry and dad had apple crisp. The pie was huge and as good as it looked! I gave this place five stars because the food was good and the staff was awesome. Went in for breakfast around 12 today and I must say that they had their first epic fail for us. My daughter ordered the eggs Benedict with extra side of sauce. They used frozen spinach and didn't drain the water out of it properly. The spinach was soggy and thus the English muffin underneath was all soggy. The side of sauce was curdled, also. Labor Day experiment! We knew that the majority of our favorite breakfast joints would have long lines because of the holiday so we ventured out with a goal of finding a new place without a big line. We hit the jackpot! We drove past a tiny little place that didn't look too busy. We walked in and were immediately given seating for two. Although this place is small, built around an an old dining car from 1920, they do have a long booth with about 20 stools, 8 to 10 tables and a whole seating area outside as well. Honestly, the real reason I stopped by was to grab a slice of pie as I was experiencing a pretty substantial craving for the stuff. Unfortunately, they only had cherry available...and some bread pudding. My server didn't really seem enthusiastic about either option so I decided to forgo my dessert. Wish they had more pie options available. The atmosphere is about what you would expect. They are apparently constructed out of an old train car so It's quite cozy inside. If you arrived by yourself or with a dinning companion, you can rub elbows with other patrons at the counter. Small groups can probably squeeze into one of the booths. While the food here certainly isn't good enough to blow you away, Red Barn Diner is a solid choice if you're looking for classic American comfort food. I haven't reviewed in a while and we decided to go somewhere new for breakfast. I will just say - wow - what a good breakfast. My wife got the Irish Benedict and I got manager's breakfast with a chocolate chip pancake on the side. Places make pancakes so different... this was great as pancakes go 9.5/10. Irish was 8/10. Managers breakfast was a 8/10. Only complaint was the lack of flavor on the hash browns. Salt and pepper couldn't bring it to life. They were also warm as other people complained about. Service was friendly and food came out fast. No mistakes and the waitress was attentive. Best item that we had was the pancake - so good. Met my out-of-towner brother here for dinner because the (free!) parking is better than Red Arrow, which is almost impossible to get near on a Saturday evening. It's a sketchy-looking little hole in the wall building next door to an equally sketchy-looking used car dealership on a not-so-nice part of Elm Street, but don't be put off by the appearance. Decor is extremely basic and the chairs rock a little on the uneven floors but you don't come to a place like this for the interior design. We were early for dinner, about 4pm, so we had our choice of tables, not that there are many in the tiny space, and we spread out on a four-top in the back corner. Brother was coming off a Spartan race so he was thrilled at the breakfast-all-day offerings, and the French toast (which we both had) was just the ticket for carb replenishment: three thick slices of white bread, like Texas toast, dipped in a sweetened egg batter and fried in butter on the flattop, topped with more real butter and powdered sugar. (Next time I'll sneak in a bottle of real maple syrup in my purse, since all they had was the fake stuff. I'm a Mainer, I need my maple.) I couldn't finish mine. The bacon (three large slices) could have been crispier, but I'm a bit picky about my bacon, and it was flavorful without being too salty. Brother said the coffee was good and the waitress - who was attentive without being annoying - kept his cup full. The place started filling up as we were finishing up but the waitress did not rush us out, which was nice. Prices are extremely reasonable for the generous portions, and they accept credit cards. I walked down from my hotel this morning, looking for something a bit more interesting than your typical Dunkin Donuts sandwich (don't get me wrong, I love my Dunkin). The front desk last night had mentioned a diner so I headed this way. If you are looking for a bone-deep honest diner this is the spot. Hot, endless coffee, friendly service, and eggs just the way you want them. If you are looking for pretense or kitsch, keep driving. The linoleum tile is a little the worse for wear and the foot-shelf around the counter is unfinished wood with plenty of dirt and scuffs. I think the weirdest part is that the waitress toasts the bread instead of the kitchen. I have no idea why this policy is in place. I've never had to wait for a seat at The Red Barn (formerly known as Shirley D's). The food is good. The portions are large. The prices are reasonable. The parking lot is spacious. The coffee is pretty good. The waitstaff is attentive and friendly. All those reasons make it a good alternative to busier places downtown for a Sunday morning breakfast. The Red Barn Diner in Manchester is my favorite diner near my house. Simple, great prices. Started as a 1930's dining car from Worcester, MA. Anyways, I was looking at old pictures and found a dish my grandmother used to make called "Hole in Bread" - it's pretty simple. You make a hole in the center of toast and fry an egg in the middle. When I went to the waitress with the picture - she didn't even flinch. Came back with it expertly prepared. (This wasn't on their menu). Taking a special request like that and owning it went above and beyond. Now I'm going to start going everywhere and asking for it! But back to the restaurant - it's a no frills diner kinda place. We love a 'greasy spoon' for breakfast. Down-home places with no frills typically have the best food, nicest service, and when you get the bill you're typically suprised.... And the Red Barn is no exception to that. We've been at least 10 times as it's 'our place' to have breakfast now if we're going out. Never changes....
