The atmosphere of her restaurant was great and I really enjoyed the appetizers (flaming cheese, guac and calamari). The drinks and main dishes however were not so great. The short rib looked incredible but other than three bites was just one big thing of fat. The margaritas were good but too heavy on the bottled mix. This was my first time visiting here with a group of friends for dinner recently. As soon as we walked in it was very dark inside but the decor was really beautiful all around. A lot of tables, it was a huge restaurant, had so much room. We started off for dinner having the big nacho platter which was fresh, and delicious. The meat on top of the nachos were very tender and went so well with the melted queso on top. For dinner I got the Short Ribs that came with garlic mashed potatoes and a mixed veggie (cauliflower, green beans. Carrots, etc). The short ribs were perfectly cooked, didn't even need to use my knife to cut into them. They were super tender and delicious. For dessert we got the chocolate lava cake which was very rich and yummy but I can only have 2 bites because it was so rich! Overall I really enjoyed my dinner here and I'll definitely be coming back soon! read more

Enjoyed great guacamole, a tasty Mediterranean shrimp bowl and excellent service from our server, Nicole.

This evening, I dined here with three friends. One of them ordered the stuffed rigatoni and exclaimed "it is hitting". The other ordered the salmon and found it delightful "because of the flavorful broth" that surrounded it. I ordered the meat and cheese board that included almond biscotti. The biscotti is a cookie that is too sweet for charcuterie. Water crackers would make a better pairing. Background music included such artists as Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan and Shakira. The decor is inviting. This venue is great for parties because there were several tables that could seat at least 10 people. The restaurant is perfect for a date night and happy hour. The service was good, too. COVID-19 protocols are in place. All staff wear masks. Located on Route 110 in Melville, this restaurant has plenty of parking. The bread on the shrimp po boy was a bit tough but the filling was tender and flavorful. For dessert we tried the churros fries which are a new fav and the chocolate cake. I celebrated my very belated birthday with friends at The Refuge and had an amazing time. Our server Rich was the best!! He provided great service and was FUN!! I live in Queens so I was surprised how packed the restaurant was, but I felt completely safe with their Covid set up. The food was delicious! We shared the Pulpo & Chopped Baked Clams to start, but also shared all our entrees. Everything was tasty and flavorful, but the risotto (the one thing I didn't get a photo of) was the BEST I've ever had. It was velvety and just perfect. I would definitely return! Love this place! I've been a few times now and what I can say is that the service has always been incredible. Especially two weeks ago with waiter Alex, so I wanted to shout him out on how fab he was. He recommended the eggplant in a way that made everyone at our table order it except one gal who went rogue and got the scallops. I'd say give it a whirl - it came with homemade parpadelle which was actually served al dente and not mushy so THANK YOU to the chef for knowing the correct toothiness to serve pasta. Al dente literally means "to the tooth". Anyway - more about the atmosphere. We chose to dine outside in December in NY. We were the only ones in the outside area save for one couple who was finishing up when we sat down and no one else came in the entire time we were there. They had heaters minted to the ceiling and the area was enclosed so you weren't "outside outside" but we felt more comfortable here and we were definitely not cold during our meal. Mimosas and Bloody Mary's abounded, but the drinks were average I'd say. Finally, we finished with a little dessert as we were celebrating my birth! Just do yourself a favor and get the churro sticks. You can thank me later. Perfectly cooked and so light - perfection. It also comes with caramel dipping sauce and can you really go wrong with that? This is my first time going to this restaurant. From the start I use a wheelchair and have a wheelchair friendly vehicle. There is just 1 wheelchair accessible spot. As a large restaurant there should be more. the restaurant was able to accommodate my car by parking in front of the restaurant. that was really nice. No sence parking a block away. The waitress was really nice and knowledgeable. Drinks were tasty but not strong for the price. Food was tasty but I think it needs better presentation. The churrasco was not very tender specially for the price, and also no steak knife given. My mom had salmon which was pretty good. My friend had vegan ravioli, it was tasty but presentation terrible. We went for my birthday not too long ago, and I love that they have these little rooms and spots for large parties. You're always greeted with cheerfulness, and the bar area is roomy enough even during happy hour. Lots of parking, great service, and I always get the paella. read more

Great atmosphere, good food and good service. We sat on the outside patio which was quiet and lovely. The delicious bread on the table started off the meal with a nice touch. Creative cocktail menu is a plus although I went with a simple Old Fashioned and was very happy. A pleasantly surprising baked clams appetizer was swimming in some delicious broth perfect for soaking up with their bread. The chicken paillard was a huge thinly pounded chicken breast with arugula salad on top, is a shareable if your not a huge eater. I'll be headed back to Refuge for sure! read more

Huge indoor space with an outdoor (covered) patio. Really nice decor and atmosphere. It was pricey but we knew that going in. -Shrimp Tacos: 4/5, these were very good. Nice that you get three of them which in my opinion is the way it should be! Hate when places give you two tacos. Great flavor and very filling -Grilled chicken sandwich: 4/5, this definitely surpassed expectations. A $17 sandwich that didn't include fries initially rubbed me the wrong way but the pickle and slaw were very good (I typically don't like slaw but this was good) Overall I will admit I was skeptical, the prices were high and the reviews on here were very mixed but I was left pretty impressed. My friend got married here in a beautiful huge back room with large bar and dancefloor for private parties. I hear they have a great happy hour as well. Since it was a wedding buffet we had a lot of different food options. I think the red sauce was okay so the chicken parm meatballs and such were just okay. Came here for dinner with two friends on Friday night. We were seated right away and greeted by our server. We ordered wine and margaritas. The frozen margarita was so sweet and just tasted like plain strawberry syrup, no tequila taste at all. Chardonnay was good though. We ended up ordering a few apps: quesadilla (delicious), fried calamari (wouldn't get again), and nachos (plenty of topping, not enough chips, just ok). Then we did the dessert platter which we got with creme brule (good), tres leche (delicious), zeppolis (yum), and a chocolate treat thing(disgusting). The platter was $30 but plenty to share easily between 4 people. We sat near the bar afterwards which was nice for a bit. The place has a cool vibe and the appetizers were good. In June 2018, we all went here except my husband because he didn't come on that trip to NY. The thing is, I KNEW he'd love this place if he would have gone. It's just his kind of food, so when we ALL returned this past Christmas holiday, we immediately thought of returning here, so my husband could say he got to try it. It doesn't matter if it's the best retaurant on earth... or not... what matters is that I knew he'd love it. As a "for instance," we ordered the Ropa Vieja nachos, and he now calls them "NACHOS OF THE GODS." Yeah, it's that kind of amazing..... and well, he's STILL talking about them over a month later. These nachos have corn tortilla chips, shredded beef, melted cheeses, and pico de gallo. It's just something about the beef that puts this dish into another dimension. So friggen' delicious. The guac is pretty killer, too, but he hates that stuff..... so fine, more for us. We let him pig out on the ropa vieja. Their portions for everything are absolutely huge, and between nonstop holiday eating, enjoying our appetizers, everyone picked at their entrees and had lots of food leftover. It was loud and until we complained about the service, we sat for 20 minutes without being able to place an order. I had been before Covid and remember liking the food. I will not go back. These reviews are incredibly misleading. This was one of the worst meals my friends and I have ever had. I ordered a burger and it was boiled and unseasoned, $9 mocktails that are 90% ice, $7 for a side of 2 bacon strips. Their paella somehow always lacks in flavor, and the first time I tried their calamari was just sad. Tasted bland and not fresh. Their four cheese tortellini was also disappointing: 4 fat and greasy tortellinis that were drenched in this intense, creamy sauce. I genuinely felt sick afterwards. The only thing I would come back for is their margherita pizza. Unfortunately, one time I was ordering takeout, I picked up my food and came home to discover that they had forgotten my pizza. We called back, they said they were sorry, and offered to give us a refund on the pizza since we didn't want to waste gas to drive back there again. We agreed and hung up. I've been here a few times. The place looks nice but it's so loud. My ear drums were pulsating and I couldn't hear a word of what the people my table were saying. I understand playing music even loud music later but I don't understand blasting music at 7pm when there are families everywhere. The food is also not that great frankly. I had shrimp pizza once which wasn't bad but I later had the Mambo italiano which was super greasy and had a sauce that tasted like watery ketchup. Papa johns could do better. Well, the place have a subdued atmosphere, soft lighting and a little on the dark side (my Bride wasn't a fan). First thing I noticed was there was no steak item on the menu...odd right? We started with the Empanadas which were blazing hot, temperature wise. Crispy and tasty! Well, I ordered the Rigatoni and Meatballs ...tasty with a smoky flavor in the meat sauce. The meatballs well about the size of my fist...big for meatballs but well done. They were meaty and not filled with bread like can be in other restaurants.
