I went to The River Oyster Bar excited for dinner because I've been supporting this place since their old location. I've visited the new location several times, and this visit reminded me how much a restaurant can decline when the service no longer matches the reputation. The food itself was good, but the service was extremely disappointing from the moment we sat down. Our waiter seemed very disconnected and out of touch the entire evening. He repeatedly referred to me and my girlfriend as "guys." I corrected him and said, "We're not guys, we're women," and instead of simply apologizing, he responded by saying, "That's just a term I use. I always say hey guys." That alone already left a bad impression because professionalism and basic respect still matter. At one point, he offered me an extra plate, which I accepted so I could move my spinach over. The moment I looked down, I saw what appeared to be a facial beard hair on the dish. I was immediately disgusted knowing I almost ate someone else's facial hair. I called the waiter over, and while he apologized, the overall response afterward felt dismissive. The issue was never about paying the bill or replacing a side item. It was about cleanliness, professionalism, and customer care. Finding facial hair on a plate at a restaurant of this caliber is completely unacceptable. The GM came over to speak with me, but honestly, it felt more like they were trying to smooth the situation over rather than genuinely address how unacceptable it was. As someone who has lived in the Brickell area for 15 years and supported this restaurant since its original location, it's disappointing to say that I will never return. All the other staff members we came in contact with was more lively than our server. Kind of put a damper on my birthday dinner. So a 4 star review seems fitting. Now onto the food! The star of the show was definitely their namesake- the oysters. We had an order of the oyster with caviar [$10] a piece which was amazinggg. The other oysters I had did not come with caviar but was just as amazing- 2 from FL and 2 from Maine at $3.50 each. I'm assuming it's a rotating menu since it was clipped on to the "normal" menu. We also had the Octopus to start [$22/one medium sized tentacle] & was also a 5/5. The sauce had a bit of but the Octopus was grilled to perfection. Loved the smokiness of it. Came w/beans and some veggies. Our entries were both really solid picks as well. Got the Mushroom Crusted Sea Bass [$48] which came w/mashed potatoes. OMG this was really, freakin good. I couldn't get enough of it! Finished everything on my plate. Also had a taste of the Gnocchi & Jumbo Lump Crab [$42] which was filling but full of flavor. This is my second visit and had another great experience. The first time, I had the Cobia curry and it was great. My husband had the Fisherman's stew previously and said it was fantastic. This time we both had the stew and found the octopus to somewhat ruin the dish for us. Deviled eggs were good, but nothing special and were overpriced for the two eggs. We enjoyed two different types of raw oysters that were on the happy hour specials. Both were clean and fresh. The last time we found out server to be knowledgeable and friendly, but this visit, our server seemed either brand new or lacking familiarity with the menu and offerings. The one with blue cheese was outstanding. - Gnocchi and shrimp in vodka sauce: Incredible. I actually wished I had bread or a spoon because I wanted to drink the sauce. The gnocchi were slightly toasted, yet so soft they melted in my mouth. Honestly, I haven't enjoyed a vodka sauce pasta like this in years. - Pot de crème (recommended by my server): OMG. How have I never tried this before? The caramel had a smoky, rich depth that paired beautifully with the cream, and the touch of salt just made it perfect. I came in on a Monday around midday, and while the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, both the dining area and the bathroom were noticeably dirty. Not exactly the first impression you want when you're about to eat raw seafood. I ordered the oysters, but the server had zero knowledge about them--couldn't tell me where they were from or what made each one different. When they arrived, a young staff member simply dropped the plate on the table and walked off without a word. No explanation, no interaction. Favorite restaurant in Miami so far. Came here for dinner after a few recommendations from friends and left beyond blown away. The River Oyster Bar is not particularly fancy but the quality of its food is incredible. We started out with a few oysters which our waitress helped up in selecting. Delicious, light, and flavorful. We decided the entrees that were recommended to us spoke to us more than any of the appetizers so we ended up getting 3 entrees to share among two people. The crab gnocchi was amazing - soft and flavorful gnocchi, delectable truffle (and truffle oil), and big pieces of crab. The scallops were quite large and numerous in quantity with the risotto. The grouper in mushroom sauce was probably my least favorite of the 3 due to its straightforward flavor but otherwise very solid as a dish. The guava cheesecake came recommended to us as well, and it turned out to be even better than expected. It was a massive cheesecake - probably the single biggest slice I've ever seen in a cheesecake (not sure how one person can finish it alone lol). Service was great and I thought our server was very attentive. The only thing that could have improved this experience is if the actual food came out a bit faster after ordering despite the restaurant not seeming incredibly busy. I wish the waiter had started out the night telling us what food they were out of or better, cross it off your menu if you won't serve it. Ngl the server also did not give much info on the oysters as I had hoped. It seemed like either he didn't want to bother explaining or he just didn't know how to describe them. I ended up getting the Blue Island from NY. The stone crab was so worth it. Def recommend trying it if you can. 4-6 is happy hour menu only!!! Came here mainly for the oysters and wanted to try other things as well, but we came at 4:30 so it was happy hour menu only. So the options were very limited. Theres a few bar appetizers they offered but at least all the oysters were available (only 2 are half off). Considering limited options, we tried all 9 of the oyster options on the menu. The oysters were delightful. My favorite was the Violet Cove and the Wellfleet. So much so, that we ordered some more of those at the end. We also had some duck tacos and a pot de creme paired with some wine. Everything was delicious. The NFC championship Game was on and it made the meal all that better with everyone cheering on their favorite team. The service was wonderful. They joined in on the fun!
