Gayle and I shared some confusion today as we enjoyed a nice lunch at what was either The Canvas Cafe or The Cider House at Canvas Cafe. We think there may have been some recent movements by the owners, and for the purposes of this review, I'll go with this Yelp entry the matches the pictures to what we experienced. Today was a quiet post-New Years day and Gayle wanted to dine someplace besides the Red Dog Saloon (our "usual"). The Canvas Cafe (or whatever it's called now) was just a block or so down C street and open. The dining room was small, cute, inviting, and warm. It was also a "one man show" today as one guy was working both the kitchen and the dining room (and very well). I especially appreciate a really busy guy who maintained a relatively high service level, with a smile and a generous side of patience. We all ordered sandwiches, including French Dip for Gayle, Smash Burger for Darling Granddaughter, and a grilled Chicken Pesto for me. Everything was delicious, with my only regret being that I should have ordered the impressive side salad that Gayle chose. A small bag of chips really didn't do the sandwich justice. I would have also preferred a beer, but there was no alcohol served today, and my bottomless glass of lemonade was more than just fine. Gayle and I agreed that we'd love to come back in whatever main place or annex. It's a fair drive back to Genoa from VC, and we were happy to head down the hill full and happy. read more

Visited Virginia City with my Daughter. The Cafe was our first stop for some breakfast. I ordered the special biscuits & gravy it was so delicious!! Coffee was hot and fresh. My daughter got a omelette with juice. The servers were so friendly as most are in this little quaint town. There are so many things to look at and the chalk table was a fun way to pass time together. I will be back for lunch!! read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat! The cafe is a heartwarming, charming, and a welcoming place to be. The staff is friendly and feels like family. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The food today was delicious (as usual). We had the bacon and eggs, blackened salmon Benedict, and the special blueberry venison sausage turned into a Benedict. Breakfast choices in Virginia City on an early weekday morning were limited but the Canvas Cafe got 'er done. I was not the only person in here but it didn't get very busy during my time. The same young lady was making coffee, taking orders, cooking and running food. She also ran the register. Not a problem as it didn't really get too busy. I had an omelet which was a little over done. Not great but good enough. This isn't a fancy restaurant and I didn't need fancy today. After clearing plates, I sat with laptops for an hour or so while Virginia City woke up so I could look around. Our waiter, Dustin, was one of the best we've had. He as attentive, personable and polite. Food was excellent! We had the French Dip, Chicken and bacon sandwich, homemade potato salad and garlic bread. Highly recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

We love it. Felt like home with a shoot (recreation) out included on the street below. The owner/server was spectacular! Food was what we were looking for, not too heavy but simple and fresh. We came after Hot August Nights and expected a super busy situation. As luck would have it parking right across the street. We support small businesses. We weren't rushed. Food was just right. Prices were a little bit high but didn't detract from the total experience. Owner added a little local gossip to the menu which was fun and humorous! We were meeting out-of-town family in VC on Friday, and we arrived early. Hungry. We stumbled upon The Canvas Cafe. Open tables were available, despite an event going on in the city, so we stopped in for breakfast. OMG I'm So glad we did! The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! Look at the pics. This may well be one of the best spinach (veggie) Benedict's that I've ever had. The English muffin was perfect (not soggy) and the hollandaise sauce was homemade, light and just amazingly tasty. Quirky little local spot..... Food is good but not great. Atmosphere is nutty as nutty can be, but I love that type of thing. Have to say I became obsessed with their little piggy salt and petter shaker. The food.... Less obsessed not still filled my belly. Services was good. I was here last weekend with my family for the dirt bike races and needed somewhere to warm up and have brunch. The service was absolutely excellent!!! I wish I had gotten our server's name, he said the place was owned by him and his mom. He was friendly, efficient, and took great care of all his customers during the busy rush. The food was very tasty and came out quickly considering how many people sat down at the same time. I will 100% return the next time we take the trip up!! read more

We came upon Canvas Cafe last weekend while a friend from out of town was visiting. We were hoping to find some french fries for my daughter for a quick snack. Unfortunately they only offer home fries which was not something my 2 year old wanted haha. But, I thought they tasted ok. It is a cute little spot with lots of fun decor. We thought about a full lunch, but the prices were pretty steep for a burger. We grabbed a piece of banana bread, an orange scone, and a lemon poppy seed muffin. As far as esthetics and atmosphere... I love this place! It's got a fun and funky vibe. The service is friendly but not very attentive. I ordered eggs Benedict with my eggs over hard... the whole meal was barely cooked. It had soft English muffins, running eggs and barely cooked bacon instead of ham! My husband ordered an omelet and it somehow got missed on the order, so it came out appropriately 30 min later! The waitress only offered 10% off the bill which was basically nothing for the bad meal and the other meal being so much later! Beware!!!! We went for breakfast on Sunday. The Server that we had was very nice, they didn't have a table when we walked in so she took our number, and said it would be about 40 min and she'd text when the table was ready. She did send a text, and it was much sooner than she had said. This part was lovely. We ordered the Classic Benedict's, Bloody Mary, and Corned beef Hash and Eggs. The food was mediocre at best, the Hollandaise sauce was really thin almost translucent and not creamy looking, the eggs were hard, and potatoes on the side were under cooked. But this was not the alarming part..., it was the fact that someone came out of the back... maybe a cook not really sure. She had a jar of Mayonnaise that she was dipping a spoon into eating spoon fulls and re-dipping that spoon in the jar! Do they use this for food they prepare for guests? And the other server that was there, had a bottle of vodka and she was drinking it straight from the bottle, again do they use this to make drinks for guests.. literally made my stomach turn.. since we had already eaten. Meh. That's as good as I can do. My husband got the salmon eggs Benedict. It was his first every branding and we were both appalled when Gus eggs came out basically hard boiled. The best part of a Benedict or poached egg is that first cut when the yolk oozes out. The first time they delivered it, they forgot the sauce. The second time it just had a cold coagulated sauce on it, as if they forgot it in the pan. My son got an omelette. Ham, bacon, and sausage. He said it was decent but he wouldn't return. Their only vegan option was something called the "blank canvas" which the waitress got very excited about as the chef mixes up a surprise mix of vegetables. I had to request potatoes in mine. What arrived was a bland cold assortment of undercooked veggies. I don't think I there was any sort of seasoning on them at all. It was very underwhelming and I barely touched it. There was no crispy parts or the veggies hat had been cooked on the griddle. No delicious seasoning. No attempt at a sauce. It was very expensive and not worth 50% what we paid for it. The bloody Mary was terrible. I don't think either of us finished ours. I would skip this and head to the bagel place in town. I read more

Not impressed. Came here on Saturday around 11:30 am. Ordered burgers and one breakfast which is offered all day. The burgers were reportedly ok, nothing special for $16-18. They didn't come with fries as the menu said but came with undercooked country potatoes. My over-medium eggs came over-completely cooked to the max. The one slice of toast was good but stone cold. The bacon was decent. And again, undercooked country potatoes. Service was lacking overall. Despite being nearly empty our server came only three time. Once to drop menus, once to drop drinks which ran out quickly, and once to drop food. Oh and also, the bacon was left out of one of the bacon burgers but they did bring it eventually. It was on the opposite side of town but worth the walk . Seating inside was small & busy so we sat outside - picnic tables were set up. Greeted by our sever - who was wearing a cameo (red) onesie (should have taken a picture)...She took our drink & breakfast order. Drinks & food arrived timely. Super impressed with glassware & drinks were tasty. Steak Eggs Benedict was yummy, well priced and a great choice. The normal Eggs Benedict (bacon) was also tasty. We enjoyed a yummy breakfast at this little Cafe. All meals made to order and very fresh. While waiting for our food we had fun looking at all the vintage and nostalgic decor. Definitely skip this place unless you enjoy dining with several flies. I'd be embarrassed to serve food with this problem if I were the owner. The menus were sticky and the choices underwhelming. My blt was a...salad? A random lightly toasted piece of bread served atop. At first I thought it was a deconstructed blt but it had a vinegar dressing tossed in, which is not at all true to a blt sandwich or wrap, so that was disappointing and misleading. To add insult to injury the prices here are laughable. Far too expensive for what they're serving up and can't even get a fly problem under control so you're swarmed and swatting at them your entire meal. One of the servers wore an odd animal onesie despite the summer temperature. Like those cosplay furries. I should've walked out after seeing that to be my first sign to avoid. This morning we went with my family to VC and decided to have breakfast. The canvas cafe was just a random place we picked. We told the server we were a party of six and he replied that they normally don't serve big parties (really, 6 people is a large party? Absurd) but then he said to wait and he'd clean a two-table setup which they already had. We ordered and waited over an hour and our meal hadn't come. And so I politely got up and asked the server how much longer would it be, but then he very rudely replied that this is why they don't take "large" parties. And then mumbled rude comments back to the kitchen. So I went back to our table and said that we should leave. Then his "mother" came out and chastised me about having a large party and that this is why they don't serve large parties again. And so I told her we were leaving and then she threatened to call the police on us. After over an hour we were only served waters, two coffees and one orange juice. They were EXTREMELY RUDE, UNPLEASANT AND UNPROFESSIONAL! My sister went against and paid the bill as I kept walking out they kept threatening me with calling the police. I spoke with several patrons outside in the patio and were asking me what had happened, and I told them. They told me as well that they'd been waiting a long time and that the server had also been very rude to them as well. These people should not be in the restaurant/customer service business. My daughter and I have wanted to try this place for a while but we always seem to get there after they've already closed. This time we headed to Virginia City early and hungry. I was excited that I saw a person outside eating a nice salad. Both my daughter & I have been trying to eat healthier so how exciting. We sat ourself down and I noticed the server on the phone. She came over apologized for the delay and went and got our drinks. Looking at the menu I was initially confused. No salad? Then I read that all sandwiches can be made into a salad. How exciting. We ordered the steak sandwich made into a salad and the swiss mushroom burger into a salad. OMG!! Portion size was great. I got a ton of steak cooked medium/medium rare. It's a spinach salad with mushroom, onion and tomatoes. One of the best salad I've had in a long time. My daughter loved hers as well. As we were waiting to pay, I did see the server bringing our 2 more salads and saw one was the salmon! It looked amazing! I'm excited to come back to try that one. Food here is not bad and is one of only two Sunday morning options for breakfast. We were all saddened by the lack of pancakes or french toast on the menu and sourdough is the only toast option. The food was good and the service was decent but this place could really only make it in a small town like Virginia City. We always love to get breakfast from here when we stay in VC. The food is always so good. Great drinks. Great service. Warm cozy environment. We love to walk there and get a window seat. So you can enjoy the downtown view. I love how they have daily specials and home made goodies. This morning I enjoyed the kielbasa and eggs, my hubby got the make your own omelet.
