I appreciate that the menu is on the smaller side - there are only select few quality items to choose from which makes the decision easy. I have tried the moriawase bowl, snow crab roll, and inari and all were great. This is specific but the small serving of seaweed salad that comes with certain dishes is SO good; like the best seaweed salad I have ever had. I would come back just for that. The side of seaweed salad taste like it was homemade, there was just a certain freshness to it, not overly salty, and seasoned with sesame oil which gave it a lovely fragrance. I found The Roll while I was on a work trip in SF. My colleagues and I were looking for a place to get dinner and this place has great reviews and was walking distance. It was a Sunday evening and not crowded so we were seated immediately. Everyone started with waters and some of us got drinks. I ordered a Sapporo because that always pairs well with sushi, in my opinion. We did order our own rolls (The Roll, Konbu-Jime roll, Snow Crab roll, and Yakiniku Inari), but traded one for one so we could each try some of everything. The Roll is their signature six-piece roll with bluefin tuna, salmon, Amberjack, deep fried kanikama, avocado, cucumber, takuan, shiso, and tamago. I understand why it's the signature because it has a bit of everything that makes a delicious roll. With three type of fresh fish AND deep fried kanikama, you can't go wrong. The ratio of filling to rice is also really good. Just enough rice to hold everything in place, but not too much that you feel like there's more rice than fish. They're very generous with their fillings. 8.5/10. The Konbu-jime Salmon Roll is a six piece roll with konbu-jime aged salmon, avocado, cucumber, takuan, shiso, and tamago. I believe konbu-jime is when the fish is aged by wrapping it in kelp to supposedly bring out the umami flavor of the fish. I can't say for sure if it was super different than if they just used regular salmon because of all the other flavors and ingredients, but I can say that it's a really delicious roll. 8/10. The Snow Crab Roll is a six piece roll with snow crab, deep fried kanikama, mayo, avocado, cucumber, takuan, and tamago. I used to not like snow crab very much because I get sushi for the raw fish, but it's grown on me. The mayo gives it great taste and texture. A really good roll as well. 8/10. The yakiniku Inari is a rice stuffed tofu pouch with Japanese marinated BBQ beef with a quail egg on top. This one I tried one small bite of, but you can tell that the marinated beef is good quality. It was moist and the touch of sweetness in the Japanese BBQ was lovely. 8/10. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for some sushi / Japanese food that's not going to break the bank. I seldom come to this area so it was my first time here. First of all, this is in soma so parking is always going to be hard, but you might be able to find metered parking. Also, there's a few parking garages 2-3 blocks away. The place isn't too big but still spacious and clean. The service was great. I felt it did take a little bit to get our rolls though. We ordered 2x tuna, unagi, snow crab, and salmon rolls. It was someone's birthday in our group and this place allows the bday person to choose a small dish for free, which they ended up getting the karaage. The rolls were pretty big in size and 8 rolls was plenty for 6 people! I think my favorite was between the snow crab and salmon. They all were good though. Also, each roll came with a very small dish of seaweed. The rolls were fresh and good. The karaage was so tender and tasty. I recommend getting that as a starter. The seaweed was good too. We live close by and have been eager for this open for quite some time ever since they had a poster by the window last year. We got there at opening on Sat and it was empty, we were the only table during our dining experience. Nonetheless, I would highly encourage people to check this spot out - very pleasant vibes, clean, spacious, music not too loud, amazing friendly staff. We ordered: - Side of mushroom (5/5): simply fantastic, our favorite thing of the night, so much umami. Our kid loved this so much my wife and I barely got any, should've ordered two! - Nigiri set 10pcs (3/5): definitely not "extra large" pieces they claim to be, fairly small even more so than a standard nigiri. Fish were fresh, but thinly cut layers over rice which, I don't think should be used for nigiri. The rice just falls apart. - Moriawase (4/5): beautiful presentation, the rice at the bottom of the fish works much better than in nigiri since they don't need to hold to a structure or getting picked up together. The rice in here was actually warmer too, quite pleasant. All the seafood was very good, wish they served more than just one shrimp or one unagi piece. Seaweed that came with was very good and crunchy. They served complimentary sparkling water and let me try their house beer before needing to commit. Overall the service and ambiance stood out, next time would try more sides and inaris. I hope this place can last! read more

Great spot for an affordable meal. I've been here twice, once with a friend and another time with my sister. We've tried the nigiri set, hand roll set, and a kaisen don. My favorite are the hand rolls as they're super filling and tasty. Kaisendon presentation is on point, quality is good, but rather hard to eat. I didn't enjoy the nigiri unfortunately. I love scallop, but the sauce they put on top did not complement the scallop. If the cheesecake is on the menu, get it! It is soooo good. Thick, creamy, and not too sweet. This is my new go-to spot if I'm craving a quick hand roll dinner. read more
