First time eating at Rome at the recommendation of my stepson. I'm giving it 4-stars for what it is: a casual, family restaurant with good Italian basics. If it was a 5-star restaurant, I would give it 1 star. The ambiance is casual, the service is very good (Stacie was great), the bread is a nice, doughy, soft Scali (the way I like it), and the reasonably priced menu choices had all your basic Italian favorites and a few specialties. The portions are also large. There were nine in our party and all were very pleased. I ordered the Veal Ala Roma which was delicious if you're a Veal lover. My daughter-in-law ordered the Mussels and Shrimp pasta and the amount of mussels and shrimp was amazing! All cooked perfectly. We'll be back! Note: the website indicates they only serve beer. After spending most of the last year deployed it was such a pleasure to return home and enjoy a meal with my family at the Rome. For a busy Friday night we were seated after a short wait and were immediately greeted by our server. Drinks and our appetizer came out very quickly. The calamari was fresh and fried perfectly. Our meals were EXCELLENT! My wife had the pasta with clams, I had the veal parmigiana and my daughter had fettuccine Alfredo. For dessert we all shared the chocolate peanut butter pie. I had a craving for Italian food yesterday afternoon and this place popped into my mind. In days of old this place was a "special" place to go to, my birthday for one. I used to salivate when it was mentioned. So I figured how much could it have changed. Not much thank you. It was after the lunch crowd had left and just the stragglers were left. The bar had the afternoon construction guys having a tasty beverage before going back to the frigid weather. So we headed to the dining room. I was in the mood for veal parm and I was not disappointed. It was just thick enough and fried to perfection. And my usual bitch about not enough sauce was mute. (It's a personal problem, leave me alone!) The only pain was that I could not get mashed potatoes. They serve roasted potatoes instead. And I was pleasantly surprised that i liked the combo. My companion had one of the lunch specials, chicken finger sandwich. I was surprised when it hit the table. This sandwich was huge! It had loads of chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and honey mustard sauce. The roll was no slouch either. The parm was $10.50 and the lunch special was $6.50, all worth it. I have only been in the area 2months. We moved from Michigan and just happened to try this restaurant. We loved the the food. The pizza was great, so was the fettuccine Alfredo. Ordered the lobster ravioli (Friday special) and the chicken parm. Both came with the seafood chowder (also a Friday special). Chowder is great and the lobster ravioli is amazing! Ask for extra sauce on the ravioli, they give a side bowl that you can take home and put in your own pasta. I don't love Rome and TRY to support local. Service is slow, and food is just okay. The restaurant side is so loud due to the cathedral ceilings. With a few kids in there, it annoying. It's a better bar and app place. read more

If you're in the mood for old school red sauce Italian, then Rome is a good option for Franklin. If you want upscale northern Italian, try the expensive place at the other end of town. The good: The chicken cacciatore and fra diavolo are good, and the pizza is decent. The bar drinks were excellent, as was the service from the waitstaff. And the food prices are really quite reasonable. The not so good: Salad is of the iceberg lettuce type. Soup had mushy pasta. And as others have noted, the bread seems stale. I think they must slice it all up far in advance of it being served. And the decor really needs updating. And I think that's the Rome in a nutshell. A solid restaurant that is resting on its laurels from decades ago, being kept alive by loyal town customers. The foundations here are good. With some simple changes, Rome could be so much better. Serve higher-end individual rolls that are fresh. Put some field greens in those salads. And most importantly, invest in the interior, particularly the furniture and wall/window decor. read more

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really get why The Rome has gotten so many bad reviews. My boyfriend and I went here when we felt like Italian, but not the Olive Garden version of it, real Italian. This place is definitely a step up from that. We came just as dinner hours were starting, so it wasn't at all busy. I think we were one of the few people in the restaurant area, the rest were over at the bar. We were seated immediately and got our orders taken with no fuss. I got the Chicken Parm with ravioli and my boyfriend got chicken with pesto sauce. He loves pesto and this is one of the few Italian places we've been to that makes it. Most Italian places stick with traditional marinara and alfredo sauces. Both of our portions were decent-sized and tasty. Dessert wasn't anything special, but that's not exactly what an Italian restaurant advertises, is it? Overall, a good experience at The Rome and we will definitely be returning. read more

The Rome. I've been going there since I was little. It's a Franklin Landmark and for good reason. The food is always consistent and the prices are fair. My favorite dishes are the Veal Parm w homemade Gnocchi and the spicy sautéed calimari. If you're going on a Saturday night, get there early, they are ALWAYS packed. But who wants to go to a restaurant that's not packed! What I like most is the consistency, you know when you order something it will be the same as every other time, and it will be good. read more

Meh.. it's okay. My bf and I come here once in a very great while. I have tried many different things in hopes to find SOMETHING TO use as a goto dish, but so far no luck. I do have to say I like that they do offer whole wheat pasta.. why it costs more money is beyond me.. but it's still a nice option. I recently tried a Margarita pizza. . And it was the same as everything else I have tried, just okay. The bread is a great gesture but is always stale. If my review was food based only, I would give The Rome 5 stars. We have been happy with every meal we've ever had there. The portions are large and we always have leftovers for the next day. Tried the pizza for the first time last night and it was perfection. Nice crispy crust and not too greasy. The only down side can be parking. We generally time it right and manage to get a spot in the lot out back. That did not happen last night. The chairs are not the most comfortable either, but the food helps to distract from that. read more

We asked her several time about a dish and her response was " I really don't know" . She never once offered to ask someone. She screwed up 2 of our 4 orders and was unphased. Went to The Rome on Mother's Day with my son, daughter in law and 2 grandson's. The service was quick. Food was average. Our food came out fast, but when the server delivered the food, she leaned over to hand me my plate instead of placing it on the table in front of me. She said "careful the plate is hot". She did not tell me it was "lava hot". I scalded 3 fingers on my hand. She said " do you want some ice?" Me: " no, why would you hand me a plate that hot?" Again, "do you want some ice?" dog water pizza. actually disgusted me as soon as our meal arrived. very odd environment with a distinct odor that almost made me walk out of the door right away. the service was horrendous. 90 minutes went by before i even received my horrible pizza. this establishment is a disgrace to all things pizza. I used the catering for my son's soccer pasta dinner. I ordered lasagna, meatballs, baked ziti, salad and bread. Everything was so delicious! Exceptionally good! The meatballs were moist, flavorful and had a little kick. The sauce and lasagna received rave reviews from all the boys. And it was so easy. I ordered just a few days before the event. I even called and on the day of the event and changed the pick up time. They were so accommodating. There is a separate catering entrance. The portions were enormous. We had leftovers and couldn't be happier about that. I've been dreaming of those amazing meatballs ever since. Only wish I could make them as good. read more

M the bartender was curt from the start and kept it up all night, even making fun of a patron who seemed a little intellectually challenged. I just ordered a lunch special from "The Rome" (takeout), a fried chicken breast sandwich with cheese, bacon, L/T, and a sriracha aoli. Let me just say, DO NOT sleep on their creative lunch specials, as it was one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had. To die for. The Rome is nothing short than AMAZING. I go in often in the afternoons with a friend and we are always greeted by a warm smile from the always charming bartender, Richie. Went to the Rome for a bday party yesterday for 18 people for dinner , I can't say enough as to how incredible everything was ! I used to come here when my kids were little but hadn't been back in years. I recently purchased a Groupon and figured it would be a perfect time to try again. I will NOT be going back The eggplant parmigiana was dry, burnt and had a really bad taste. The chicken piccata was tough. They said the sauce is homemade; it's fresh out of the can that we saw in the kitchen on our way out the door. The bread is ordinary grocery store bakery quality. The salad is cheap diner food. (Iceberg lettuce, carrot shavings, one slice of cucumber and a little chunk of tomato) The parmesan is right out of a can. The chicken was frozen not fresh. The only good thing they had were the roasted potatoes. They were quite tasty. Ew. Just ew. I'm all for trying Italian food at least once. Once is all I'll need for this place. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was so greasy that they were sliding around on the plate. The seafood chowder was "fishy." Like a bad fishy smell. The eggplant parm dinner was disguised as "bread parmesan." The eggplant was sliced SO thin that all you could taste was the breading. The red sauce was OK, but nothing spectacular. My husband's veal parm wasn't so bad, but not worth the $18. All in all, I would rather go to McDonald's than waste $50 here ever again. read more
