My husband and I were in the mood for Italian and I didn't feel like cooking, so we went to the Rome. Oh. My. God. Eww. I don't actually know how they can call themselves an Italian restaurant or what kind of food the reviewers who gave this place a 4 star rating are used to eating. I come from an immigrant family, we're actually from Rome, so I can tell you that's not "authentic Italian" at all. That's like an American trying to cook Italian after watching too many re-runs of "Everybody loves Raymond". The pasta is basically tasteless mush. The red sauce tastes like it came out of a jar. Everything was overcooked, and tasted like it had all been made in advance and kept warm (which is probably why the pasta was mush). The restaurant itself provides zero privacy, and it's very loud in there. I wouldn't recommend going to the Rome if you plan on hearing your dinner date. Finally, as if things couldn't get any worse, they're way overpriced. Save yourself some cash and just buy a box of pasta and a jar of prego. Hire the neighbor to cook it for you and you'll still come out ahead of the game taste-wise and price-wise. read more

I love this place ..the food is reasonably priced / cheap. the portions are generous and the taste is amazing. They use fresh home made pasta ... it is the best. Visited the area for the weekend. Decided to try The Rome for dinner. Greeted and sat right away. Server was friendly and quick. We're from a city with great Italian food so this just didn't compare. They passed off cavatelli as gnocchi, the sauce was watery and the pasta soggy. You can taste the foul tap water on the lettuce in the salad making it uneatable. Bread and dressing were good. My first choice for veal parm. The Rome is an old school red sauce Italian restaurant. Not flashy, just excellent food. Normally go there a few times a year and always have the veal. It's the most tender and tastiest I have ever had. My boyfriend loves their prime rib and the veal as well. My mom always goes for the chicken parm and my aunts love the antipasto salad and soup. I've never had bad service here, they are always friendly and attentive. l love the bread! It's fresh thickly sliced Italian and is delicious dipped in olive oil. The Rome was a great spot to come for a casual dinner - nothing fancy! Its a nice local spot, that reminded me of the show Cheers - everybody knows everybody! I am pretty amazed that anyone would give the Rome bad review. It is one of my favorite places to eat. I have lived in the area for 25 years and the Rome has been consistently excellent. I used to bring my kids all of the time because it is very family oriented. It beats (good) meals I've had in the North End. There is nothing close to the Rome in the area. The service is always good. Someone complained about $18 for their Veal Parm which is absolutely ludicrous. Where else do you eat? Where can you get that portion of great food for $18?!!! The prices are very reasonable. I recommend the Veal ala Roma. Always ask for the home made pasta. My wife and I will go by ourselves but, as I said, it is family oriented and can get loud. In town for a work thing and we stormed the walls of The Rome with a crew of 11. After a modest wait we were seated and presented with our menus. I almost never go out for Italian and I haven't had veal in years. What the hey. I went with the veal parmesan over homemade pasta. I was given a plate with half a baby cow and a hectare of fresh pasta. Maybe that's an exaggeration but what I'm trying to impress upon you is that it was a lot of food. I liked the fresh pasta quite a bit, but I had to bail after a handful of bites and just focus on the meat. It is the star of the dish after all. It was so good. The breading on the outside was seasoned and crisp while the inside was melt-in-your-mouth tender. This place is a classic hang out.. Franklin High School Dominates the bar after 8pm... Its fine though to come here with some of my ladies and grab apps or a pizza... The pizza was fantastic(buff ckn and peperoni) The waitress was Nice and attentive. The bar top is full alot... The wine cooler i suggest to anyone its really good. The calamari was good also, they added pepperochinis and it was yummy. The stuffed mushrooms were just OK nothing too wonderful. I came for dinner before also and i had the penne pesto meal, FANTASTIC...i didn't finish it but it was just as good the day after at lunch. Thanks to the great cooks there! The Rome is just okay - nothing spectactular, but certainly not bad. Their pizza is good, but a little pricey. I don't like that you don't get a salad with dinner entree's TO GO, but you do if you eat there... The home made spaghetti is my favorite. Don't forget they are closed on Mondays. read more

The servings are substantial ...we always seem to have food to take home. Waitresses are friendly and have worked at the Rome for years. The one thing I can't stand about the Rome, quite frankly, is the seats they have at their dining tables. They are ice-cream parlor style chairs with cane seating...the seat itself is very small in size and there isn't any cushioning so they aren't comfortable to sit in for long. (perhaps they are meant to be uncomfortable so the patrons will move along and they can flip the table more speedily?) Frankly - when someone suggests we all go out to the Rome, the 1st thing that comes to my mind isn't the food but the uncomfortable chairs! read more

I agree with Dorian G. Gino & Phyllis would have a fit if they could taste what is coming out of the kitchen. They worked their tails off endlessly to build that business. The gnocchi is now mush and tastes like frozen, the sauce is garbage, the pasta fagioli makes you gag; not what their reputation was built on. I finally tried this place after living in Franklin for over 10 years. My wife came when we moved here while I was away on business, and didn't like the food too much. Upon our recent visit, we both thought the food was okay. Our disappointment was the service. They seated us in a room that was entirely empty. We requested sitting in the busier room, but they refused. For a family run place, it would have been nice if some of the managers / owners would have said hi. They made no effort to be friendly, even as our family had to brush past them while leaving. We don't plan on returning, too many better options out there. read more

We stopped in for dinner while on April vacation. The service was great, our server was pleasant and the food came quickly. Unfortunately the food wasn't great. It was ok. I had the fettuccine alfredo with sausage. The sausage was really the only thing on the plate that had any flavor. The alfredo sauce was essentially a white sauce. There was no cheese or garlic in it at all. The homemade pasta was very good though. We also had chicken a la roma (I think that is what it was called). This was not what we anticipated, but was pretty good- the best we had. The two kids meals were what you'd anticipate in most restaurants. I'd potentially go back to try something different but there are many other places I'd try first. read more

I've been a customer for 25 years. The Rome used to be the best Italian restaurant in the area. Since the original owner died, the food, particularly the tomato sauce, has gone downhill. It's basically lumpy tomato soup. No flavor. I don't buy the bull when they say they didn't change the recipe. Twice out of the last four times I got sick from their food.
