Came here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and it was pretty busy! There isn't much seating indoors, but by the time we finished ordering a table opened up and we snagged it. We got a bowl of the smoked chicken & andouille gumbo and a whole "Big Chief" po'boy (roasted pork belly + crawfish + crispy peppers + mayo + cabbage) to share. Our food came out pretty quickly and it was AMAZING. The best po'boy I've ever had in my life. The toasted bread slathered with mayo was the perfect background to the pork and crawfish. The pickled tobasco peppers on the table were the perfect accompaniment to the sandwich. The gumbo was also good, but tbh the real star was the po'boy. I'm definitely coming back!! read more

I'd give this a 4.5 in actuallity but given this is the best Bham has to offer in the Po Boy world, I went toward the 5 than the 4 rating. First, the interior. For someone who loves NOLA and lived there for 6 years, I can say they got the feel down of a small restaurant/bar in NOLA serving really good cajun food. There's about 8 sit down tables and a bar you can sit at. There is a little outdoor seating as well. Given the hoopla over this place, we lucked into a slow moment and walked right in and up to the counter to order. The menu consists of gumbos, po boys, muffallata , boudin and some assorted side dishes. I went for the seafood gumbo and wife went for the chicken and andouille gumbo. She went for the shrimp po boy (1/2) and I went for the roast beef with debris (1/2). First the gumbo: My seafood was good and full of shrimp and oysters. The roux was okay, not the best i've had and the key to gumbo is a great roux. That is why I did not go in on the full out 5 stars. Wife's gumbo again was full of chicken and great spicy andouille, but the roux again not as rich and flavorful as I like. The Po Boys...OMG....without a doubt best in Bham and at the top of the one's I've had in NOLA. IT starts with the bread. They bring it in from NOLA and it is everything. Great crispy fall apart crust and soft pillowy inside. You could stick anything in that bread and it would be off the chain. My roast beef was perfect..All drippy and tender with juices and gravy and debris everywhere. And don't worry, there is tons of meat on this po boy. They do not skimp and 1/2 po boy was perfect amount. Wife's shrimp must have had 10 shrimp on it, fried to a crispy golden brown and they melted in your mouth. Again with that incredible bread it was over the top good. I loved this place! If you are hankering for a incredible po boy don't think you need to travel 6 hours to NOLA. I loved the New Orleans vibe of this hidden gem SO MUCH. The decor made me feel like I was in a cottage in the French Quarter and the food and beverages did not disappoint! I ordered the Oysters Rockefeller PoBoy and it was delicious! The oysters were big and cooked to perfections day it also contained bacon lardons and spinach Mornay. I ordered the red beans and rice salad, which I was dubious about at first, but really enjoyed! It was served cold and had a vinegary sauce and a lot of spice! A friend took me here. I love Cajun food but am a picky eater and was not sure about some of the ingredients. I normally wouldn't have eaten a thing on the menu. That would have been a mistake on my part because the flavors that came out of their food was completely intoxicating. I've never eaten a more well rounded, flavor balanced meal in my life. The worst part, though, was the slow, unfriendly, unapologetic service. Why does it take longer to order than it takes to eat the food? Why do they give literally zero fucks about that? I was so excited to try this place, but instead had the worst sandwich of my life. I got the eggplant poboy and asked for it to be made vegan, since previous reviews showed it was possible. I expected a sandwich with eggplant and maybe other veggies (lettuce, tomato, onion, etc.) nothing crazy. Instead I got a beige disaster of just soggy eggplant and bread. The eggplant had absorbed all the oil and tasted like licking a deep fryer. That paired with the fact it had no toppings for some reason (unlike the rest of my companion's sandwiches, which were loaded with veggies) made it terrible. I don't expect every restaurant to have plant-based options, but when they do I'd like for them to at least be edible. I ended up eating chips for lunch and making do with that. read more

The first time we came a few months ago I didn't love it, but I didn't write a review because I knew it was probably more because we weren't familiar with the food than the food actually not being good. This is some of the better Cajun food I've had anywhere. A couple of my coworkers and I decided to try something off the beaten trail, and all of us were excited from the moment we pulled up. Tucked away in an old house that has been transformed into a bayou style hole in the wall, this is no place for decadence. If that's not an issue to you, then you are in for a treat! We all had some combination of the Shrimp Poboy, Seafood Gumbo, and Cajun Fries. All of it was delicious, even better than MANY places I've had in Louisiana. The throw whole oysters in the Seafood Gumbo, and generous chunks of okra. They don't skimp by any means. The full Poboy is more than enough food for one person, I ended up giving half of mine away. They have a bunch of frozen beverages, we tried the purple one (think it had Grapico in it) and the mojito. Both were crisp and refreshing. Only con is I ended up paying 30+ for a Poboy, gumbo, and a drink. A bit more than what i would like to pay for a drink and a meal at a hole in the wall. read more

I've liked this place since week one. The regular menu covers the regular and some irregular poboys, like a Louisiana joint should, thankfully here in Birmingham. They maintained a steady take out presence this past year. What pushes my rating up is the consistently excellent range of additions to the menu. The fried green tomato/shrimp remoulade is close to perfection for a seasonal poboy, as is the viet Cajun version. If you are missing the taste of New Orleans on a basic, deep down level, try this place out. read more

This place fills a need in Birmingham. I know that there will always be a ton of debate over whether Cajun food qualifies as "real" Cajun given the passion that exists over this type of cuisine. That being said, here in Birmingham this is probably your best shot at the real deal. It sits sort of in an alleyway and can be a little hard to spot from the main road, just look for what appears to be a small house with a big Rougaroux standing on the porch and you've found it. The menu has all the things you'd expect...gumbo, po boys, boudin, etc. The handful of times I've been here everyone has been happy with their food. Prices are decent, not dirt cheap, but definitely not inflated. Overall a pretty fair value. Full bar, some outdoor seating, and an unquestionably relaxed vibe. I feel like this place could be picked up from where it sits, dropped back down in New Orleans and it would fit right in. It's interestingly decorated, the food is legit, and if you don't like it then you pretty much have to leave town if better Cajun food is what you're looking for. read more

I stopped in on my way through town and had the Surf and Turf Po' Boy and a cup of Gumbo. Too much food for one person, but it was great. The Po' Boy is split half and half with Fried Shrimp and Beef Debris. The Beef side was extremely juicy and made for a bit of a soggy bun, especially if you don't eat it quicky, so beware if you don't care for that. Otherwise it was overstuffed with meat and overall I was very happy with it. The Gumbo was good, but I should've added hot sauce as it's not spicy on its own (as someone who likes spicy food). Great vibes and cool decor. They have a nice outdoor seating area and are taking appropriate Covid precautions including requiring masks indoors. Enjoyed the smoked duck gumbo more the boudin as I make mine crispy lately on the grill. Fun atmosphere with the where wolves or creatures decorated outside. It's okay. I wavered between two and three stars. I finally decided to give three stars because, hey, anybody can have a bad night. Let me put it this way. When a restaurant is investing way more energy and attention to setting a mood than the food it puts on a plate, it's got its priorities backwards. Personally, I think the people squealing like teenaged girls over this place are gulled by its ambience, not the food. I mean it certainly tries to pour on the charm with all the expected New Orleans kitsch, but c'mon. First, they were critically short-staffed. People were literally standing around waiting for tables to be cleared in a cramped dining room with scanty air conditioning. I think that's taking the bayou experience a bit too far. Second, the food was just meh. And I say that as someone who loves gumbo and a good po' boy. We ate and strolled down to Little Savannah for dessert. Many reviews call Rougaroux eclectic, I thought it looked junky. Shrimp Po Boy was fine. Large portion of fried shrimp with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and onion on a standard white roll...but sauce is extra. I got the remoulade. I also ordered the creole fries, which weren't very creole. Just crinkle cut fries with a little salt and pepper. Not cheap, but nothing is any more. Definitely not a 4.5 star experience. read more

I recently discovered this hidden gem on Instagram and had to immediately try it. We had the Oyster Po Boy, Surf & Turf Po Boy, Red Beans and Rice, Cajun fries and Bread pudding. The Oyster Po Boy was good but I would have preferred to have my oysters fried a little harder. The Surf & Turf Po Boy was also good. The size of the po boys are large and filling. The french bread was very soft so after eating the po boy with all of the toppings, some of the bread began to get soggy over time but still very tasty. The red beans and rice was good as well. It had a slight hint of heat but it was a nice heat. The cajun fries were hot and taste good as well. The bread pudding was very delicious and I definitely will get it each time I come to the restaurant. We wanted to try one of the frozen drinks but the mix was not ready during my visit. The restaurant's decor is kind of eclectic, which I loved. I like that you order your food from the bar when you enter and find your own table. We sat inside since it was raining, but there is also seating outside. Everyone was dressed comfortable and casual. I also loved the large selection of hot sauces available to sample. First the ambiance you walk up to this place and please have NOLA on your mind! It'll definitely take you to the roots of Louisiana. The food was great, the boudin was packed with flavor and had a good Smokey taste (how it should be prepared), the gumbo was rich and also full of flavor, I got the Viet Cajun Seafood Poboy the mixtures of the flavors of Vietnamese and Cajun foods is great.
