Phenomenal food and service. I got the BBQ Poboy as a recommendation from the cashier and I don't regret it

I have been meaning to write about Rougaroux. Tucked away in the Forest Park neighborhood, the Rougaroux transports you to the back streets of New Orleans. Walking through the gravel paved path passing the outdoor patio and fans, the humidity and heat today actually did make it feel like New Orleans. There is a small dining area inside. It has simple tables and chairs with walls adored with a theme that can only be described by one word, Halloween. There are also 4 large tvs in each corner placed high above near the ceiling. There's plenty of seating outside with fans. Their menu is simple and straightforward: gumbo, boudin, poboys, great drinks (daiquiries), some desserts. Their poboys include the traditional shrimp, oysters, catfish, but they also have roast beef and gravy fries and cheese poboys if you're adventurous. Then there's also their "specialty" poboys which include the oysters rockefeller, blackened catfish, lemongrass fried chicken, bbq shrimp, surf & turf and viet cajun shrimp. There are "Sides" but they're not included with your poboy. They include creole fries, red beans & rice, potato salad, pepper slaw, collard greens or zapps chips. They only listed one dessert: white chocolate bread pudding with pecan praline rum sauce. I have had their gumbo on a previous visit and to say it is a slice of Louisiana is an understatement. Today I tried their Blackened Catfish poboy. This was certainly a "specialty" poboy because the perfectly blackened catfish was covered with fresh green onions, corn, red pepper relish served on a perfect bun that was coated with a smoked tomato aioli and lemon. It was delicious and the flavors just exploded in my mouth. Yom Yom Yom! If this place was across the street from my house, I would eat here every day until I got bored then go back in a couple of days. If you're a seafood fan; if you're a fan of Cajun flavors, the Rougaroux needs to be on your dining list. Laissez les bons temps rouler! read more

My husbands sandwich had a hair in it, my gumbo was cold when brought out, and the person taking our order acted like it was the biggest inconvenience to do so. We won't be back to this location, considering the much better service and food at the Mtn Brook location. read more

By far, the best Red beans and rice in the city. Having lived in the New Orleans area, it was really nice to find some good spicy New Orleans style red beans. The server was grand enough to remove the sausage for me. A big bowl of the rice and beans with a side order of hush puppies really hit the spot. I was disappointed in the fact that they did not have the vegan burger as stated on the daily special menu, but the server was so accommodating in offering to prepare different vegan dishes as a substitute. Ok, let's discuss the vibe...an old house with a couple of lean too added for outdoor seating. So I've been to this place a couple of times in the past three years I recently just went and took a date there I bragged about the place the whole way there and describe the aesthetics. some of the employees that's in the front will give you prejudice vibes by how they treat you. This last time that I went it was about an hour in 20 minutes before they close I ordered the Boudin sausage, which was just OK the gumbo bread pudding in the surf and turf. I got home and noticed that they gave me a shrimp Poboy instead of the surf and turf, which is the shrimp and roast beef together I called to ask how can we resolve this and maybe get a remake but the guy that was on the phone was extremely rude and asked what do you want me to do about it we close in 20 minutes which I replied. Could I possibly get a remake or a refund then he hung up the phone my date call back and he told her it's nothing they can do about it. They won't be remaking it or refunding it and I will have to just come in and order again. This will definitely be my last time eating there and if this is how they treat most black customers then I advise no one to go there. read more

By far the best muffalata sandwich you can get outside of the original in New Orleans. Ordered a whole sandwich and split it, loved it and when you get the whole sandwich it's a pretty good deal. I just did pick up so didn't stay to eat, place looks interesting, wasn't too crowded and sandwich was ready quickly. Horribly small parking lot, street parking was full, may have been another lot on the back end could not tell. This will be my go to place when people come to visit. read more

This is a funky cool place for the young, hip and cool crowd with covered patio and some outdoor dining. They've done a great job providing a French Quarter vibe in Forest Park. The food is authentic Cajun fare, Po Boys, Muffulettas, gumbo, and other New Orleans favorites. I had the Surf and Turf Po Boy. I must admit I pondered how good could a beef Po Boy be? As it turns out, really quite tasty is the resounding answer. These folks even make their own house hot sauce. Laissez les bons temps!! read more

Funky, unique, quirky and rememberable restaurant!!! New Orleans, Mardi Gras vibe for sure. Got the BBQ shrimp Po boy, and fried oyster Poboy. Husband loved the fried oyster Poboy... The BBQ shrimp Po boy for me had too much rosemary flavoring, I'm not sure why it said BBQ as it tasted nothing of BBQ and had to be eaten with utensils... Not pick up-able and not my favorite but will come back to try another. You have to order up at the counter, get a number and find a seat inside or outside under the covered patio. Several people had brought their dogs, which is OK until you sit next to someone that has a hyper, yappie dog or 2! Definitely a place you want to give a try and decide for yourself. read more

This place is a dive with very good food. Had the gumbo and mufaletta which we ordered at the bar and was served quickly. Both were very tasty! Look forward to returning and trying some other dishes. read more

Customer service was good and the food did not take long to arrive as it was nice and hot. Tried the Viet Cajun Seafood aka a crawfish and shrimp po boy. The sauce was good. My only critique is that I did not like fries or chips did not automatically come with the sandwich as it was sold separately read more

Super unique restaurant. Definitely gives the New Orleans type of vibe. Decided to take my dad here. I ordered the fried catfish po boy and my dad ordered the blackened catfish po boy. Both both ordered gumbo with our po boys. We both enjoyed our food and would definitely dine here again. Stopped by for Lunch on Saturday at their Forrest Park location and was disappointed for the first time, ever. Perhaps, they had the "2nd String" working that day? I ordered my favorite sandwich, The Ferdi Special, and Unsweetened Tea. The Ferdi had very little of the pot roast drippings, making the cabbage a tad dry. The pot roast drippings and Crystal Hot Sauce make this sandwich! Overall, it was ok, Just not how they usually make it. Oh, and the tea tasted horrible. Made me wonder when was the last time they cleaned the rubber seal in the urn. Those things can get slimy if not cleaned daily, which makes the tea taste awful instead of fresh. I'm not one to complain at a restaurant (my family ran a deli for years), so I ate my sandwich and didn't drink any more of the tea. The Ferdi was below average and the tea was horrible. Hope they are better next time. Usually, their food is great, so I'm hoping this was a one-off. read more

A bit disappointed. For $17 you'd figure the sandwich would be filled up and/or come with a side. I left hungry. The honeysuckle cocktail did not taste good either. Drove down from TN to try this place out and we are so happy we did. Everything was so good and bursting with flavor. My husband got the surf and turf po boy, while I got the oyster rockefeller po boy and then we split the shrimp gumbo with a scoop of potato salad in the middle. Never had potato salad with gumbo before but it worked. The gumbo was meaty and had nice heat level and spice. My sandwhich was good, had alot of oysters and the bread was so soft which made getting a perfect bite of everything each time. We both loved the turf side of my husband's sandwich so much that we already know what we will get the next time we go back. The debris part had tons of melt in your mouth meat and the bread just soaked up the juice with every bite without making it soggy. They have a decent parking lot but it does fill up pretty quickly. Service is good but a heads up they don't take cash just cards. The ambiance is very new orleans with alot of different decor that all flow together with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Can't wait to come back again and highly recommend. read more

I like the New Orleans vibe! When I went, there was some live music, so that was great. The frozen drinks were fantastic, gave me Bourbon St vibes. There wasn't a lot to pick from on the menu, but the catfish po' boy was amazing! The smoked chicken wings were flavorful. The gumbo was decent. They didn't really have any condiments for the chicken fingers and fries they serve for kids. If you want to try unique po' boy sandwiches, this is the spot! read more

i've had this restaurant on my list for a while now and finally decided to give it a try. the atmosphere is very relax and cozy, this is not a restaurant you dress up for. their food and alcohol menu is limited but overall they have good selections. i sat at the bar so the service was good. the bartender was very attentive and within reach. i tried out a boudin link, as well as a classic fried catfish poboy with a side of cajun fries. i was actually shocked at the portions because of how much food it actually was. i'm taking off a star because i do believe the price is a little steep (the po boys don't come with fries, gota order as an add-on). the spicy remoulade wasn't spicy and had a strong vinegar taste. also, the cajun fries were just... regular fries LOL. i did slightly taste the cajun seasoning, but for $5 i believe they could dress these up a little bit more perhaps with extra toppings. :) read more

Well first things first I can't stand when prices aren't the same online as what they are in store. I mean I understand we are where we are in the world and prices have gone up etc etc. that's understandable. But FOR GOODNESS SAKES PEOPLE UPDATE YOUR MENU! That really irks my soul, chaps my ass, and grinds my gears because when I'm thinking something is 26 dollars and I come and it's thirty I have to do a double take but I digress. And there are people that think it's not that big a difference however to me it is. The boudin was ok. I'd just say it was different, tasted more like bbq sauced mixed in there but I mean everyone boudin really tastes different so if I had to give it a score I'd say 4/5 but nothing like I've had in Nola and BR. Next was the gumbo for starters I wish I had gotten more for the price. (After all online it said $6 and I paid $7) but either way still felt like the amount could be much more considering most of what I actually got was rice with like 4 half pieces of sausage. Was it good? Ehh. It was seasoned but was missing something. I'd give it a 2/5. It got better once I got to the bottom and there were more green onions so maybe that was the flavor it was missing more of. And finally the shrimp poboy. It was good, probably the best tasting thing I've had. All in all, the food was ok, just didn't live up to all of my expectations because I was desperately missing NOLA food but it was I guess close enough. As far as the service, I can't really attest to anything positive or negative because I was in and out and ordered to go over the phone. Overall, would I be back?? Probably not. Would that matter? 2021 I found this unpublished draft from last football season Another trip to the ROUGAROUX. I am crazy about this place! I was entraining 4 friends for a football game and got 6 Muffulettas extra olive dressing to go. They are certainly the best Muffuletta's this side if the Central Grocery in the French Quarter. That is unless someone can tell me where they are better! My guest loved their Muffulettas ! and that was most important thing on this day. As expected the Leidenheimer Bread was fabulous with everything served. I'm sure I will return soon for a to go order. The AC was out when I picked up this order. It's a dive that serves excellent food. Going when the weather is cool and setting outside is the ticket ! 05/12/2022 I was sitting at the bar at the ROUGAROUX having a cold Good People's IPA and was lucky enough to see the guy next to me order a PO Boy that I have never seen. He said it was the best he had ever eaten. It's looked fabulous so that got the Wheels Turning ! The Viet Cajun PO Boy. I had the best PO's and Gumbo I've ever eaten. Im not new to this kind of food. I've eaten Creole Cajun food my whole life from all over Lousinana, Mississippi, Alabama to North Florida. Here's is this delicious meal on this Thursday night The ROUGAROUX Gumbo of the day; Crawfish, Shrimp, Crab & Andouille Sausage. Excellent 1 If I was cooking this I would have added fresh Okra maybe 10-15 minutes prior to serving - I know that would be impossible for a resturant to do this, but just saying. The Viet Cajun Seafood PO Boy' Breaux Bridge Crawfish, Gulf Shrimp, Cajun Spices, Lemon Grass & Chilis served on an 9" Leidenheimer Bread. I would only change one thing, Buy More ! I got the oyster Rockefeller po'boy and Cajun fries . I was able to modify it without bacon because I don't eat Pork. Service was great and fast, I ate outside clean atmosphere no bugs and the food was so fresh and hot. Would definitely recommend. read more

If you like gumbo and po boys, this will be your speed. They have several po boy options to choose from. I don't really care for po boys if we're being honest, but the shrimp on it was good. The sandwich itself way too big to pick up and eat so I picked the shrimp off of it and a little of the bread. The gumbo was a no for me. It didn't seem to have too much seasoning in it and it was kind of watery ‍ however, it was edible, lol. I like the food at both locations, but impartial to the original in the little pink house. Great oyster or shrimp poboys or 1/2 and 1/2- get extra remoulade- like the fried chicken livers and the seafood gumbo. The gumbo does not come with rice so order a side. The shrimp po'boy was delicious! The gumbo was ok. Not my type of gumbo. It had an okra texture and didn't taste like the authentic New Orleans gumbo I love. The brussel sprouts were just ok too. We came in a couple of weeks ago for a birthday lunch with my fiancé. It was our first time and we had the gumbo w/ the special Viet-Cajun po-boy. The gumbo was very good: hearty and filled to the brim with all sorts of goodness. The bowl was more than enough for a full meal. The Viet-Cajun po-boy was the star, though. Big, big shrimp, cilantro, spicy sauce, and whole crawfish tails all mixed together in a viet-cajun style on their fresh bread (which was excellent). This was perhaps my favorite sandwich I've had since moving to Alabama a year ago. I highly recommend giving them a try if you haven't been yet and are in the great Birmingham area.
