It's not often places make me ask the dear waitress actual questions about what I'm tasting, and I had to ask TWICE! First off, the gravy on the Chicken Fried Chicken is SAUSAGE gravy (no actual sausage bits, but they serve breakfast until 4p and it's their sausage & biscuit gravy!) unless you're prepared for it, it kinda stops ya in your tracks; IF you've never had it. It's SO GOOD. And we had it tonight! Well T did... and lemme tell you it's goooood. Very rich! But highly recommended. A warm baked potatoe with just sour cream and butta and AHMAZING baked beans with smoked pulled pork! I snagged their special, the 3-piece Walleye with fries, and either soup or salad. Traditional salad with a sweet ranch (wasn't my favorite), and crisp tomato. The Walleye... was superb, and if you're a crispy fry person, THESE are for you! Their coleslaw was also sweetly based, and I gladly passed that to T (just not a sweet based kinda gal). Also grabbed their Rustic Remedy - with a kick - and wooosaw was there one! Fruity, citrusy, clean and refreshing just as they described. Not a whole lot of folks there tonight but if you're in the area, or want some excellent eats, I suggest you stop by. It's a diner/restaurant. I've only ever gone for breakfast/brunch. It's good. I don't think it's nothing to write home about, but my husband LOVES the chicken fried chicken and their gravy. I'm bummed because we've only gone for breakfast and they DON'T HAVE PEANUT BUTTER! Wtf? I guess next time we come I'll bring my own. Their coffee is great. read more

The service team was very friendly, smiling and helpful the entire time we were in. There was quite a few people for a Saturday evening and it really does have the small town charm. It wasn't too loud, it was open seating and we got in right away as a party of 5. all I would say is bring a jacket because it got chilly! As for the food, the friend pickles were great. The boneless wings were really just chicken nuggets but they were tender and flavorful. The onion rings were a huge order so if you're getting that as an appetizer you don't need anything else! Unfortunately our Mac and cheese and and chicken fried chicken order came out cold which I think was a result of it getting busier the longer we were there so the server couldn't bring it out in time. Drove from Omaha to check it out. Have to say I love the atmosphere. Very laid back, friendly service and great food. Jamie was our server and greeted us right away. Check on out often and refilled our drinks. Salads came right out and appetizer was followed. We had onion rings and you could tell they were hand breaded. Must try!! I had the shrimp dinner with hash browns. 13 pieces of med to large shrimp. Nice and crispy. Hash browns were a little greasy but I don't mind that. Wanted to grab a bite to eat after visiting Fort Atkinson. The person at the fort recommended The Rustic if we liked burgers. She didn't steer us wrong. This is your typical small town diner where the wait staff knows and calls customers by their first name. Went to meet a friend for lunch on a Saturday. Good menu selection........they got chicken fried steak plates and I got the bubba stack (hashbrowns with biscults and gravy with 2 eggs any style served over top). Food was good. It did take quite a bit longer to get the food than expected, but we enjoyed talking and catching up. The food came out and all was forgiven for the wait. Large portions and decent prices. We drove up to the Rustic from Omaha to try something new, and I'm glad we did. The restaurant was unpretentious and most importantly, clean. I ordered the jalapeno chicken sandwich which was really good. My husband liked his prime rib, and the baked potato was the biggest one we've ever seen! The service was great, too. Swingin through Fort Calhoun and I had known about couple bar & grills in town. Stopped at The Rustic for lunch (on a Wed). SO is a fan of onion rings and these rings were Best of Omaha(or something). He got onion rings as the side with the Rustic Philly. Served with a cup of au jus for dippin. Philly was deliciously tender, fall apart roast beef(his words) . Topped with chopped up onions, green peppers and mushrooms. Onion rings were real good, crunchy, flakey batter with perfect amount of seasoning. Even better dipped in the au jus. I chose the patty melt. It was good. The beef patty was fully cooked and not dry with sautéed onions and cheese on marble rye bread(btw tasted even better dipped in au jus too). Fries as my side, typical crinkle cut. The fries could have been in the fryer just a minute longer, as some of those suckers were a little underdone. Again...dip those lil fries in the au jus Would I have drank the au jus? It's quite possible... Our wait staff were not overly friendly but not rude either. We didn't need anything refilled but were only checked on once. Decent place to return to! read more

Took my parents here when they were in town. We all ordered the pork tenderloin with fries or sweet potato fries. The pork tenderloin was big and delicious, and the fries were crispy. The kitchen was slow but the waitress (who was slammed with customers) apologized routinely until the food came out. We were in Fort Calhoun visiting Fort Atkinson State Park and stopped at the Rustic Inn for lunch. It is exactly the kind of restaurant that you would expect in a small town. The atmosphere is casual, you choose your own table and it has a very friendly staff that makes you feel welcome to just be there. The service is fast and efficient. It is a well-kept restaurant with clean restrooms. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich, which appeared to be prepared in the classical method, Rye bread, sliced Corned beef, Sauerkraut, Swiss Cheese and Thousand Island dressing pressed on the grill. The side of Onion Rings was delicious. They had a crispy non-greasy crust covering a tender onion ring. For me the perfect Onion Ring. Lois had the Monterey Chicken Sandwich with a side of Onion Rings. The sandwich consisted of chicken, ham and Monterey Jack Cheese on a roll with lettuce, tomato and pickles on the side. That is a little different in that many recipes call for bacon instead of ham, however she liked the sandwich very much. In summary, if you are in Fort Calhoun, this is a good place to get lunch at a reasonable price. The next time I am there, I might order a double order of Onion Rings. read more

I called to order take out and was told that they were to busy to take an order. If I called back in 30 min they might be able to help me. So i went there to order. Trying my best to help my local business out!!! I got there ordered and someone came in to pick up an order I asked how long ago that called to order he said 15 min. Will I called in the same time frame!!! Well not only that I went there to get food to go but because I asked this person that and told the owners wife that all they had to say is it's going to be awhile I would have been good but anyhow I am waiting for my food and all of a sudden I was asked to leave!!! I didn't do anything and this is a place I have gone to so many times but they have new help and don't care about their locals! No NFL games on the tv allowed by the owners. But there's Fox News on 1/2 the TVs. Keep politics out of my dinning experience. I supported this business during the pandemic shut down as it's a part of my community and has good food. I just wanted to eat and watch the first chiefs game in a year that has been long and full of obstacles. When I asked to have the TV changed from Fox News to the game the waitress informed me that the staff had just been informed the owners won't allow NFL games on their TVs this year and the owners were not around to discuss. Went there for lunch today with my wonderful wife.The service was ok not super busy and it still took a bit to get things we needed like a straw for ice tea and then a beer took a while to get after we ordered. We did get there after the lunch rush so the waitress might have been busy cleaning tables. The food is fantastic which makes up for the service. Stopped in and had the Hamburger Steak special. While I asked for my steak to be medium, it was definitely on the rare side. However no blood and no moo! The meal was pretty good, you did not walk away hungry. The menu choices were excellent. The staff was outgoing and friendly. My husband and I grabbed a late supper after a ball game at The Rustic. It had been over a year since our last visit and the awesome onion rings were calling our names! We both had the patty melt with salads and of course a heaping basket of the slightly greasy, always scrumptious onion rings. The salads were iceberg lettuce with a few carrots mixed in, salad dressing was in plastic containers on the side. Our patty melts were on the larger side with white cheese and carmelized onions. The burger was juicy and well cooked. The wait staff was attentive without constantly hovering. We enjoyed the food, conversation and small town feel of The Rustic. If you have viewed my profile, then you know fried walleye is my last meal on this earth. So when I find a place with walleye on the menu, you better believe that is what I'm noshing on. Besides the drive time, my dinner at the Rustic Inn was satisfactory. Cold Busch Light on tap (the only domestic beer I drink) and friendly conversation, this turned into a pretty good night. The fried walleye basket was $8.50, and massive! 4 large fillets and I chose the famous onion rings for my side. I have more than half of the basket for leftovers. Reheating will be the challenge, but cold walleye has never let me down before...... All in all, if you want a some tasty bar food, take a trek up to Calhoun, and sample the Rustic's fare. The Rustic Inn is just the kind of place you're looking for when you want good company and great food. The staff are ridiculously kind, and treat you just like a resident of the neighborhood from down the block. They have great recommendations and made us feel at home. The food is wonderful. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner during the hours they're open. My husband had the biscuits and gravy and I had the swiss mushroom burger with fries. The portions are plentiful, and obviously home made. The biscuits were incredibly flakey, and the burger was 1/2 pound of perfectly grilled goodness. The fries were plentiful! All for less than $16, and no restaurant tax thanks to not being located in Omaha. We came at lunch, but they have a large set of offerings at the bar, and I believe they may have some music played there every now and again as they were moving some decent sized amps out when we arrived. I would definitely recommend and will be going back to this gem! read more

My wife and I split a jalapeno chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, and a walleye basket with onion rings. Great portions, well cooked, good pricing. I'm a big eater and was happy. I think the chicken might have been a bit better than the walleye, but that may just be because the walleye and rings was kind of greasy (but tasty!) Even the tarter sauce was good.
