I'm going to start this review saying the gumbo I had at The Southern Steak & Oyster was the best…read moregumbo I had in my life! It's my last night in Nashville so I want to go to a bang zoom restaurant. A few of my co workers have said to me: Mr Bill, we see every night you're going out to some amazing spots. Mind if we tag along? Sure, the rules are to keep your fork outta my plate when we sit down. Deal? The restaurant is very large, we're shown to our table. Set in the middle of the dining room and facing the bar. The bar can seat at least 25 people, the restaurant is set up for fun. To get our party started, I ordered a well crafted cocktail: Tea'd Up Old Fashioned Made with Bourbon, Black Tea and House Barrel Aged Bitters. Funky?? Oh yeah I'm with a bunch of Military Veterans and they're telling me their crazy stories. I'm sippin' my Old Fashioned and taking it all in, we need to bond over drinks and crazy things we all drank overseas. As an adult, I can appreciate my Nashville TN Old Fashioned with Black Tea. While we're talking, our waitress drops off a plate of homemade biscuits. The biscuits are fire! Buttery, flakey and moist, The Southern Steak & Oyster can make a damn good biscuit. Next, my Gumbo comes to me. The first taste I can tell this is a chef'd up dish. Better than anything I had in New Orleans. This gumbo is filled with Andouille, Crawfish, Shrimp and Fried Okra. Very flavorful indeed. My last entree in Nashville will be Fish 'N Grits. Fresh fish topped with Spicy Tasso Ham over Sweet Potato Grits and Bacon Braised Cabbage. This is a flavorful dish, the grits are very creamy and the cook on the fish was spot on. We had a great night at The Southern Steak & Oyster, it was a pleasure to dine at your restaurant.

On one visit with only a few of us there our bartender disappeared for a good 20 minutes. Upon his return he was focused on everything but the 5 of us in the place until we finally had to ask to get service. The other visit everyone helped me but the actual server. Maybe this is a staffing problem, I don't know but being stuck for 20 minutes to order another drink with my meal is not acceptable. Although they had that check in my hand in under a minute and in under another minute to process. Again, super nicer people, but kind of oblivious. 2) Now let's talk about the kitchen. And I'm adding some input from the other diners because we all sat there waiting. - flavors are great, but the salt and spice level is overboard. I had the mushroom appetizer and nearly choked/coughed to death. I like heat but this was raw spice that overpowered the dish. And the salt about made my feet swell into balloons. Such a shame because the idea is great just poor execution - deviled eggs. Pass - BBQ Shrimp, sort of like the mushrooms right profile but overpowering - gumbo. Two other people had the gumbo and when I asked they said that too is just over spiced I want to like this place, but probably my last visit unless I just come for oysters. Sorry

Chad was friendly, chatted us up, and offered speedy, quality service. The Spiced Pear Mule was delicious and well balanced. The space was warm, and I would've been happy if we'd stayed and gotten dinner here. The pig ears were so good. They were super crispy and served with sweet and sour sauce and mustard, which provided the perfect contrast. The sweet and sour sauce gave you that addicting, luscious flavor and the mustard had just enough pungency to keep you coming back for more. We demolished the bowl in probably record time. We also got the pimento cheese beignets, which were okay. They were deliciously fried pillows of dough that I felt could've used a bit more pimento cheese filling, but the pig ears completely overshadowed them. Devastated that nowhere around me offers this dish and I'll have to wait until the next I come back to get them again!

The place felt lively and fun, and there's also a small outdoor patio that fills up quickly. We ended up sitting at the bar (which we had reserved). Btw, they have a small complimentary parking lot next door plus a paid lot across the street, which is convenient. I had heard so much hype about the food, but for me it didn't totally live up to it. The biscuits were overly salty and not something I wanted to finish. The cold shrimp with blood orange was an interesting combo that I surprisingly liked. I ordered the steak and while it was cooked perfectly, the portion felt small for the price. It also came with broccolini and a really good sauce. Although our bartender/server was super attentive and friendly, it did take a very long time for our entrées to come out. He even had to go check on them and ended up bringing the food back themselves. Unfortunately, mine was honestly a little lukewarm. Overall, it was just mid for me. I wouldn't rush back, but I'd go again if someone else really wanted to try it.

Famous for not having a sign, finding it may be part of the adventure, but once you do, everything else is effortless. Parking is simple--just pull up and valet takes care of the rest. With a reservation, we walked right in with no wait. The most difficult part of the evening was deciding what to order because the menu offers so many tempting choices. I selected the Kvarøy Arctic Salmon, while my wife chose the Springer Mountain Farms All-Natural Chicken. Both dishes exceeded expectations. The salmon was cooked perfectly--crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside. It rested on a bed of greens with a subtle lemon flavor that paired beautifully with the fish. The chicken was equally impressive--moist, tender, and packed with flavor. What stood out most was the incredible smoky aroma that hit before each bite, making it even more irresistible. For dessert, the Blackberry Lemon Bread Pudding was the perfect finish. Soft, warm, and bursting with flavor, it was a standout ending to an already exceptional meal. From the outstanding food to the attentive service, Urban Grub delivered a fantastic dining experience. Make a reservation, enjoy the meal, and see if you can find the place.

I ended up here for breakfast again in much the same way I did last time, another diner a few minutes away from them was closed again (due to a move this time) so I headed over with my heart set on biscuits and gravy. Oddly enough, I did not see biscuits and gravy on the breakfast menu. I looked, and looked again, but saw no gravy--just biscuit sandwiches. I asked my server (who was super friendly) if they had it and she said they did, in both small and large orders, explaining that a large order consisted of two biscuits compared to the one biscuit you get with a small order. I opted for that, and added two over easy eggs, bacon, and home fries a la carte. My biscuit platter came out first, really quickly. It was monstrously huge and a bit more than I needed to be honest. But it was really, really good. Fluffy, buttery biscuits and a creamy sausage gravy. My eggs and other items showed up about 5 minutes later. The eggs were cooked perfectly over easy, the bacon tasted like thick cut slab bacon, and the home fries were...okay. My total ticket, pre-tip, was a bit over $20 (!) which shocked me a bit. Based on other diners throughout the area, I'd say that's maybe 20% higher even accounting for inflation and was likely due to my a la carte approach, but like I said I did not see a meal or dish with biscuits and gravy as an option. I'll be back, though!
